I think, the twist about the captain in the first season was really well-played. I lost interest in the second season and quit. The show failed to attach me to the characters or events.

That being said, I fail to understand ST fans who are now complaining about “forced diversity.” The original show’s Enterprise crew consisted of Kirk, a Vulcan, a black woman, a Russian (during the Cold War), a Scott, an Asian.. How is that any different and why didint people whine about it back then.

Not to mention that the Klingons spoke in what can be deciphered to be russian accent.

Even the Next Generation had some script affected by the twilight years of the Cold War. In the first episode of season 1, the Q continuum appears and he transforms into a 20th century soldier who wants to "fight commies" and Captain Picard replies that his outfit is a "child's costume". Today having a Russian as part of the cast would be more forgettable, unless maybe he wants to collude in an election lol.

So-called "forced diversity" is a way to add complexity and representation to the cast. Sometimes it can feel dorky and unauthentic (like Power Rangers, lol) but Star Trek does a good job at it. Plus it makes sense within the context of the story since the Federation is interstellar and Earth has a federal government. The crew is naturally going to have a lot of different people in it. My main complaint with Discovery is that it could use another alien main character. I haven't started season 2 yet but right now it's just Saru. They've never had an Andorran main character..

Well, there’s a little bit of that of course but rather than communist Russia, to me, the Klingons seem more inspired by Mongols or Attila or some similiar Eastern civilization that has nomadic warrior values. They despise conversation and peace, respect courage on the battlefield, etc, they are like the Dothraki with space technology.

I even remember fan fiction where a Klingon propaganda video had Turkish music, Turkish speech, and they had Turkish clothing and Turkish dinner table from medieval times. So they are Eastern but not necessarily Russian.

I know some people don't like the Klingons (personally I love how they give them a more 'alien' appearance instead of looking like somebody who slapped a gel mold on their forehead) but I didn't even realize the main character was an issue.

You do realize the original Star Trek was never about the presentation but about the philosophical approach to sci-fi?

No. I thought it was because of the budget and because audiences in the 1960s were easier to impress. The main audience would have been the Silent Generation or early Baby Boomers and they relied a lot more on their imaginations. I mean, they still did costumes and cosmetics and set design in the original, they just weren't as professionalized at the time. Today a lot more work is put into it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XTce38ef98

Anyway, I think the new Klingons are really well done and the actors / sound team did an awesome job with the Klingon language. People are free to disagree if they prefer the earlier designs but I don't miss them lol.

finished the mandalorian; it ended good. glad it ended, too, because the whole "you can't finish your quest yet because we need help" was getting really old. somewhat looking forward to the boba fett spinoff.

also, tried watching wandavision. didn't make it past episode 2. was told it gets better as you watch it by the people who recommended it to me, but i'm not going to continually waste my time when the characters themselves weren't even that interesting to begin with(referring mostly to wanda herself; she is as interesting to me as hawkeye is, which is to say, not at all). only tried it because someone recommended it.

i've been watching old episodes of "tough crowd" on youtube. great stuff, even if somewhat misinformed at times. back when comedy was still comedy, and the bs pc crowd was just developing. i'm a huge fan of patrice o'neal; it would have been interesting to hear his honest take on the current social environment, if he were still around.

Got Netflix. I enjoy action, science fiction, but also any style if well played and written (don't laugh, Desperate Housewives was very fun to watch years ago), so what shows should I look for?

Finished The last Kingdom and I liked. Vikings also, not bad, Spartacus a lot. Dropped early both the Witcher and the Mandalorian - didn't enjoy at all, now watching The 100 and thinking to drop it too. Walking Dead was a big no. My grip is that most of good looking shows seem to be canceled after one season or so and that crumbles motivation.

Any others I could try?

Same as Mandalorian or the Witcher : if after a few episodes I feel no bond with any of the characters, I lose interest. Lack of charisma.

They are quite old but Breaking Bad, it’s spin off Better Call Saul are great if you havent seen them by now. Ozark is good. Mindhunter, Spy, Narcos, (and the spin-off), Queen’s Gambit (beware, story of prodigy chess lady ), The Crown, Russian Doll...

I started watching it mid season 2 with my brother who had been advocating it for a while prior to that.  And even with my lack of a proper introduction to the characters from season 1, I was instantly hooked.  The realization that focusing on the characters and not the zombies is what made me appreciate the show properly.  Character development is excellent in my opinion, but it is a slow burn, spanning through many seasons.  Rick, Carl, Carol and Daryll all have very interesting growth, each in their own way, and I found it rewarding watching them figure out themselves and the world around them as time went on.  And even though I have finished the comic, knowing the major plot points going forward didn't diminish my enjoyment in the slightest.

But if you're not into investing quite a bit of time into a show, I can see how you might find it unappealing.

Narcos is boring.

Try The Americans which is utterly awesome and pretty original.

Person of Interest was great as well, the show shifting its focus successfully after a more "conventional" start.

If you didn't watch it - Gotham takes you on a rollercoaster ride of sheer absurd fun.

Speaking of comics, Jessica Jones is pretty impressive. This one is a Netflix production (as is Daredevil which is a pretty good take on comic heroes as well).

The Americans isnt Netflix though, it’s Amazon Prime. Gotham is also not Netflix and guessing from stuff he quit, he’d quit it in a second.

I don't know. If you can bond with any character out of Breaking Bad - which is not the easiest thing I've ever seen and much more difficult than in Better Call Saul - not only should you be able to bond with some characters in Gotham, there is also an abundance of charisma, the supervillain type.
I mean, it's FUN, first and foremost.
