We do it a bit differently.
Since watching only one show at a time would be a bit too much of one dish, we run more than one show at a time, alternating between "mine" and "hers", and switching. It is, for example, a good idea, after you had one or two adrenaline boosters, to relax with an episode of Big Bang Theory or, well, Bones.
However, it seems we are the only ones that watch a dozen or so shows at the same time - everyone else I know watches whole seasons or even a whole series, one episode after the next.

A show is surviving due to the weekly ratings/viewers, not on how many watch it on DVD once is over. Therefore a show must fit to the "one episode/week" pattern; most of shows achieve that by having independent episodes without a very deep time-line plot. Others as 24 put the crap out of you by ending on cliffhangers most of time. I never watched one show in a row (except Stargate- for work material purpose), but when they were released, week after week.

The episode-like shows fit into the one-weekly scheme, and also you can rerun the shows indefinitely, since there is no or not much of a continuing story. Case in point: CSI.
However, the story-line shows - 24, Prison Break, The Shield, BSG and so on - do NOT fit, and don't need to fit, since movies don't need weekly ratings either. And weekly ratings only set the prices, companies have to pay to run a commercial (that the viewer must endure), so pay per view is just another form of cashing in on ratings, leaving the commercials out.
There are hybrid shows, like the very good "The Good Wife", that mix the "weekly episode" thing with a continuing story in the background, trying to cater to both the casual viewer and the "story viewer".
Another example for an earlier - and very good - attempt in this is "Veronica Mars" which has been quite a good show as well.
The bottom line is, that the industry is simply diversifying to cater to each and everyone's likings.

One of the best shows is back with its second season, Black Mirror.
If you haven't checked it out already, do it. Now, that's how Sci-Fi is done.

Watching Spartacus season 3. Full nudity frontal views and hot ambiance, should be enough of a spoiler to make you watch it. Other than that, a lot of tomato juice from crushed vital organs.

I just started to watch Foyle's War from season 1 (currently in season 7).
The Brits never disappoint when it comes to detective stories, this is no exception. It's set in WW2 which is a huge plus for me since I love to read and watch about that Era.
The war is not just a decor and always linked to the cases in someway: A German woman murdered, a judge taking bribes to prevent enlisting of rich people's kids to military, Pro-Nazi English politician's meeting end in murder etc etc...

So I watched the Netflix original series House of Cards (based off an earlier BBC series). I found it to be a very entertaining political thriller. Expertly directed, staged and (for the most part) acted, the only thing bringing it down a bit was the writing. The main story arc was too predictable - some more plot twists were badly needed, and the one big one about 75% of the way through fell flat because it wasn't executed well - and some of the dialogue just a hair on the wrong side of contrived. Also some of the side story lines in the end didn't seem to have much real point. I did love the convention of breaking the fourth wall with the main character - ranging anywhere from a simple eye wink to a several-minutes-long diatribe. Some may find the pace too plodding for their tastes, especially in the first half of the season. Overall though it's easy to recommend, will be interesting to see where the next season goes. I give it a solid B.

I was saddened that BBC wrapped up Merlin this season.

Come on guys, comments on Lost please! I know it's old, but I was kind of a slowpoke when it comes to watching it.
In general I think that any sane person should quit after three seasons - the rest was garbage

Lost started sucking so bad at some point, and the ending was.... dumb as ****
Merlin... watched an episode or two, its a tv show for kids... ridiculous
Watching ATM - The following, the Cult, The Americans, Arrow, Shameless (US), and The walking dead... They're not bad, but none of them aint all that special either...

I believe it started to suck once the supernatural elements were introduced. It hit the bottom with time travel. Honestly, time travel ruins pretty much every franchise it gets introduced to.

Agreed, I was never really a big fan of Lost, but the show got seriously derailed as the seasons went by. It's been a long time since I saw it, but as I remember it I actually think I liked 4th and/or 5th season better than 3rd, but then it got really bad in the end.

Personally, I think that a lot of Lost's appeal comes from Giacchino's "Life and death" theme and its variations (esp. "Moving on" and "Oceanic six"). The music is superb and if you watch the same scene without it, the appeal is much lower by default.

I finished up the Tudors. It did lose some of its steam in the 3rd and 4th seasons, I think because the flow of events in each season was kind of cyclical. Still a really good series though; the costume design and atmosphere of the series was eye candy. They did a beautiful job with the visuals from beginning to end. Kind of made me want to live in the 16th century (provided that I was loaded )

By the way, I agree with Elodin, that The Mentalist is a pretty entertaining show. That seems to be something we can agree on, at least.
Caprica is a monster of a story, though. Fascinatingly brilliant - probably too intelligent to attract a crowd big enough to justify another season. Pity.

I think the only problem with the mentalist is that the guy's power of deduction is so over the top, at some point the show becomes unbelievable.
