There might still be a 2nd season with another studio. I just watched the premiere and I'm curious to see why the show didn't get a renewal. Its viewer ratings are fairly decent.

The first half the first season was pretty bad, actually.  Characters were stupid and the plot meandered.  It did start to pick up toward the end of the season, and I was interested in watching a second.  However I think the show had very large production costs and it was ultimately decided that the ratings didn't justify the cost.

yeah, i gave it a shot too, watched 3or 4 episodes because i liked Life on Mars in the past (it is probably the only british originated tv show that i liked the us version better) but the characters were shallow and predictable, cgi wasnt so good either.

The Tudors is a really fun show, except I don't like the actor they chose to play Henry VIII because the guy reminds me of Robin from the Batman Forever movie.

So annoying and boyscout looking.

IMO they should have got the guy they used to play the Duke of Buckingham and used him as Henry VIII. He's a really good actor too and he even looks more like Henry VIII.

See? He's all like "I'm wearing a red cloak, **** yeah, sons of *****es".

Tudors was enjoyable the first few seaons but I felt the last two were a little flat.  I was hoping that they would continue the series with Mary Tudor and then Elizabeth but no dish.

I'm late, I know, but Battlestar Galactica, the remake from a decade ago, is just the best show I've ever seen on TV, and by a mile.
Well, I wanted to diminish it by making it best story-driven show, but no, it's simply the best TV show I've ever seen, everything considered.

Characters are fantastic, it's monstrously philosophic and intelligent, and it's just ... epic - in a positive sense.

I may be biassed by the fact that I had an extremely strong inkling what things were all about in general, after I knew a couple of basic facts and combined it with the music of the show - but that's just another plus in my book because things are so darn consistent.

Brilliant show with just one comment: if you didn't see it, what are you waiting for?

This has been on my list of "to watch" shows for a while.  Maybe I'll bump it up on the queue.

I got hooked too back in the day. I watched all seasons in a row after the show was over. I'm sad to say the ending is a disappointment, none of the puzzles are resolved rationally, it all goes mystic and in a distasteful way. But let me not give you any spoilers, you'll have fun except the end.

I could not stand it, found it histrionic, way too much bla bla for a sci-fi show and bad acting due to inconsistent story. Instead of solving the early mysteries, they kept adding more and more until there was no other issue than a deceiving end.

The show's lack of appeal forced a number of obvious budget cuts, but at the same time, the number of episodes per season was increased from 13 to 20. As a result, it ended up with a sci-fi show with little sci-fi at all, with almost no action to speak of (space or otherwise), and tons of episodes to the top with filler. Of course, that filler was filmed as if it were "philosophical" and "dramatic", with hand held cameras and dramatic lighting, no matter if it was just two guys speaking about nothing in a corridor (which is almost all what happens in late seasons).

Truth is that it came up right after Stargate Atlantis (action, baby!) so hard to stand. For me it was plain deception which doubled with Caprica.

With the human-like Cylons it's mystical right from the start, isn't it, because you have to immediately ask a couple of more or less philosophical questions linked with it, and I'm just glad and happy, that after the first season, where the focus is naturally on the flight/hunt and the identity disclosing stuff, the focus shifts to more meaningful issues, and thankfully not to an Enteerprise like "space - the last frontier" crap with "encounters" and what-not.

With a maximum of nearly 50.000 survivors and for a big part of the show just one old warship - what do you expect in terms of action?

On the other hand, what do you expect on the philosophical or maybe even religious side? Answers? That they wouldn't even touch the issues?
I (and not just I) found that aspect pretty fascinating, and it's clear that when you introduce an element that goes beyond the rational you simply cannot resolve it and come up with an "explanation". That wouldn't make much sense, and in the end every "solution" would be invariably trivial.

BSG was great but I wouldn't be able to recommend anything more than the first season and a half or so. The constant tension between the dictatorial necessities of wartime and the democratic traditions of a human society was one of the best story arcs I've seen on television.  Unfortunately I remember by the end of it's run the show was about as interesting as watching paint dry.

btw if anybody ever has the opportunity to play Battlestar Galactica the board game with somebody who is skilled at running the game I would recommend doing so. The main mechanic of the game is that everybody is given hidden roles at the beginning - some are human and a few are cylon.  The humans are trying to get to Kobold while the cylons are trying to stop them without revealing themselves as cylons. Very tense.

I kinda liked Lost for three seasons. The rest went into grotesque, pseudo-esoteric sci-fi, which was highly impossible to digest.

Kate and Sawyer were hot, tho.

Spoiler!!!

X dies, then X comes back, is X a cyclone or not, X passes the test, we are unable to explain, we wait for the end, then: X turns out to be an angel! There's nothing deep, convincing, original about X turning out an angel. It is just a tool for screenwriters to pseudo-explain a situation they can not get out of rationally.

This is just one example. It's been a while so I cant go into all the details, But I remember other puzzles and mysteries of the show resolved as shallow as this one. You create puzzles to get the audience hooked, fine, just create puzzles you can resolve within dignity and reason.

Over a full season? That seems unlikely except for very subjective reason, since if the show was so sucky that it didn't have the ratings and viewers it wouldn't be renewed for a second season.

I've seen only the first season of "Haven" which started out rather, well, meaningless for the first couple of episodes, but then got a lot better in the second half.

However, since I very much disagree with your BSG rating, you may see that differently.

The good thing about the series is, they don't sell you a truth. You can think a lot about the hows and whys and you can come up with a lot of interesting explanations, and you shouldn't forget that we are in a fantasy game forum here, where we have no trouble accepting "magic" as a quasi- or pseudo-scientific rationalization for all kinds of unbelievable stuff.
The same is true for most SF: most "scientific" explanations are just pseudo-scientific.

I share JJ:s view here, it is not only good but the best show I have seen.

Edit: Maybe a different thread to discuss the plot and the good/bad about the show, too much infromation starting to be here.

Sci-fi and fantasy are different. A truly talented script writer can of course merge them, nothing impossible in art. But fantasy uses the magical as an alegorical instrument and if you create sci-fi puzzles you can't resolve and turn to fantasy to compensate those holes in the story, that's simply a hoax.

P.S. To me it was very clear they turned her into an angel, it wasn't spoken out but it was played out.

I removed name and gender and replaced it with X. Someone who hasn't watched it yet wont be able to tell. If I remove the whole thing my post kind of becomes meaningless. It's quite an old show anyway, what are the chances of someone who didn't watch it reading a spoiler here.
