It seems to be the culmination of the void cycle. If you've played danse macabre, Sandro did not become a lich the traditional way nor is he a believer of Asha. In fact.. He has glimpsed other worlds through the void and believes that Asha's veil has isolated Ashan from the rest of the universe and to break free from those confines one would need to murder her. The necromantic Order of the Void has apparently caught on and Ariana is their leader now, as you'll see in Shades of Darkness. I do not know where Sandro is or what his role in the events are beyond setting them in motion. Kieran starts off as the leader of the windsword mercenary group but his hero card suggests that he has been corrupted by the powers of the void. He also happens to be a dragon knight and Cate's missing brother.

Terrible. Horrible. Scary.
How to fight it without 4-or-higher-level creatures?  Spells?! What about light magic only?! 
Huh, and on the other hand we have Ariana and Nergal who you cannot fight against to with high-leveled (high cost)creatures

Then don't depend on pure rush builds. Alternatively ignore it and keep attacking the hero

That is a powerful creature.. Still vulnerable to nukes.. And area dmg.. Design however is horribe imo.
I wonder what they have planned for Haven.. Hero heal perhaps?
