Some people seem to not be downloading the correct version or the download is not going through correctly. So to confirm you should see on the menu screen 1.2 - 32489 THIS is the correct patch. If you are seeing 1.1 you DO NOT have the patch. To that end, close steam and uplay. Reopen them, click play and see if it downloads the correct patch. Failing that do a Verify files option on Steam/Uplay which will kick in the download.
Just put it on Steam. But make sure you don't fall foul for it as well.
Ye Steam compresses more than Uplay (4.4)

How long do these updates on Uplay remain 'valid'? I mean, will they remain there forever for future players to download them or expire after some time?
Because if I were to install the game now, I of course would want to receive the latest patches  , not to mention the preload/day-1 patch that exists already.

downloading the patch which is 3 GB. Longest 15 minutes in my life..will the map work or I will have to start over

Noxy told me that it's better to use the DVD-ROM key from the booklet and insert it under Activate Product, rather than installing the game from the disc itself. If I do so I can just download it from there and have all the patches, right?

True. Game will come with all the patches released.
