dislike it for pretty much the same reasons as most people: to cluttered and feels more like a military outpost than an actual town :/

like that there are a lot of buildings, signaling many ways to build towns instead of just like 5 non-dwelling buildings (including frikkin' marketplace) we had in h6. bunch of uniquie buildings (ligning byramid sounds fantastic) makes me hopefull as town uilding was one of my favourite aspect of h3. skip town-levels though. that was dull

I also think it looks too much like a military outpost also how come there is so little bridges does each island have its own teleporter?

Oh man, I completely forgot about ashing two questions during Q&A:
1. Will Grail building require Tear of Asha only?
2. Will increase in units' production occur on the same means as in Heroes V or Heroes VI?

Inscriber: Provides the town screen window to buy scrolls

So no in-house artifact merchant? I liked how you could sell junk scrolls and artifacts for some precious early resourses. Instead I can buy junk scrolls... unless ofc the magic system somehow lets you use a spell that you couldn't learn from the mages guild. That only makes sense if it is decoupled completely from the mages guild and regenerates scrolls each month like the artifact merchant before.

As for the townscreen... it looks like a flying fortress instead of a town. If there is a group of interlinked flying islands with people living on them then it needs more emphasis.
And the castle wall is simply underwhelming. If it doesn't fit into a flying town then I would rather like to see a forecefield generating building looking perhaps like the floating rings around the H5 academy townscreen.

What's with the pissing figures? Where does the water even come from sky-high?

And much more importantly, is that a sphinx I see? Or a mummy?

It's golem... and IMO, judging from picture, it's also statue of Pharaoh from some famous temple in Egypt.

Holy Cow! They actually did work on that perspective...

That townscreen actually looks decent. Full of little details (dat Marketplace!). It still feels a bit inconsistent, but it's a big step forward from H6. Nice work guys!

In H6 we got 2 types of "towns". Some were just outposts, while others were actual towns. I wonder if this would return - I liked that idea a lot. We now have same "territory" system, so it would be logical.  Would be even cooler if that idea were expanded. Like for instance that certain buildings could be built in outposts - like upgraded defence or certain dwellings. Specialy coz of caravans, it would be cool to have outpost to protect your borders.

Idk - i always wished for more in-dept town system. And also with this comes question of siege battles. I think that since I first played H3, I wished for a bit more, regarding sieges. In H6 we got some good ideas - that we can put (finaly) own creatures on top of one tower, and that any creature can attack the walls. This helped a litle bit ... but we still have that annoying "trench" system in every castle no matter the race.

artistically cool but on the architectural side this is poorly done.

-no smart circulation between similair buildings.
-no houses.
-very poor protection againts invaders.
-blind lookout points and vision blocking enviroment to see outside world.

I like the idea of having the marketplace near a fire pit.

Also is it just me or is the Thundercloud Coliseum kind of lackluster?

And the castle is, eh...

But hey, at least it looks nice, if not a little impractical.

If by outpost you mean forts, then yes.
However now you won't be able to convert forts - after you conquer one, it will be destroyed but you could rebuild it and even upgrade (to have basic defense forces in it for example).

Little disappointed in the absence of basic housing, but that's not a deal-breaker for me. Otherwise, liking what I see for the most part. Happy that we finally know which building does what - I've been speculating on the matter since day one.

I hope we get a similar result for Haven and the other factions at some point.

These releases are too frequent. Heroes VI is-was a calamity :<, hell I even like Heroes 5 (non Tote!? even) more than I like Heroes 6. I wouldn't be surprised if Heroes VII was even more dumbed down than 6, though I can't imagine if it's possible.

OH well, Heroes 2&3 will always reign supreme

Two more things.

Would it not be better to have both 'warfare units' (aren't the critters technically warfare units as well?) under the same roof?

If the Coliseum is built instead of the Vortex, the image become "imbalanced" due to the right side having more details than the left.
I imagine the neglected champion won't have its building shown?

EDIT: I've been wondering about the town screen angle.
I recall the walls in H6 being somewhat obstructive,
perhaps the devs sought to circumvent this?

I would have gone about it differently though.
You'd still look at the town as if you were in front of it, but the walls would only be visible in the background.

I don't like two aspects of it:

- Perspective seems off (check the line of the outside city wall with respect to the central platform of the Hall of Heroes, which seems tilted with respect to the buildings standing on it);
- It's a Fortress, not a Town (it lacks civilian buildings that are nothing more than eye candy);

I realise the screen is going to be animated, but I still wonder if that will make up for the two issues I have with it.

As far as standalone buildings go, the art is quite good IMO - as was the case with H4 and H6.
Although maybe the champion buildings should be more impressive.
They don't particularly stand out from the rest of the buildings.

It's placing them all together in satisfactory manner - in a way that feels real - that is the difficult part.

It's not perfect, but it's definitely a step forward from H6. Nevertheless, although I'm a fan of 2D or 2,5D graphics, 3D townscreens would fit the game more (of course I'm aware of those limited resources).

Capitol's design is definitely a downgrade from what we are used to see. I'm not a big fan of H5 art style, but town screens were definitely a highlight of the installment.

It is nice, that Limbic worked on a perspective, but this town screen still needs some love, some life.

I actually don't understand it based on the limited resources. The reason for that is the fact that they are using unreal 3 engine. As some linked early on the dev-blog videos showing how you can create very detailed cave for example and some other video about using the engine. It has tons of pre-made textures you can use, you would've only needed to create some finer details probably or you could've just left some stuff out(or edited the details of original plan). Based on the video(which I assume had professional using it) it would've taken less than a day to create a well done town-screen in 3d as long as person doing it knows what he's doing. If it comes down to one person spending 6 extra days to work on good screens(instead of the crap we currently got) I'd say the budget is way too tight. Now I have no expertise in the field, but to me the current town-screens are just result of the way of thinking devs showed on the twitch demo when they were saying nobody really looks at the town screens anyway.

I would've preferred 3d towns, followed by classic towns in h3 and h4 style. The current cartoon-ish style combined with h6 style I really despise. The town-screen styles of h6 and h7 are very similar to me, they both feel very empty and lifeless. The best word I can conjure is that h7 screen(s) feel very artificial, they don't feel one bit natural and certainly not like towns(more like military-outposts).

Here's h6 haven screen:

Regarding the looks, I think new art design isn't necessarily bad. I mean every one has their own tastes and personaly I like it. To me it's important that it "fits" with creature (units) design. While some are hit and miss, overall i think Ubi did prety decent job there. If you like that art direction or not is completly diferent story.

I mean H1, H2 and H4 had children's fairy tale kinda look, while H3 packed something more of a serious "realistic" aproach. Ubi games (H5 and onward), seem to be more comic book oriented (I would even say warcraft inspired, but idk if that's completly fair). I myself, can get behind almost anything, if only it's not too out-of-the-way.

That aside, I would realy like more "normal" hoses aswell. Some that are just part of the scenery ... maybe add some farms in the background for Heaven town ... stuff like that.

Regarding 3D, hornestly I don't know ... I would defenitly like option to rotate camera around that town, maybe zoom-in and out... but im far from expert, so if they say budged wouldn't allow them, I have to take their word for it.

The LAST THING I would want is for them to have some half-made screen that looks poor, just that it's 3D. Towns are fine as they are and only 3D I would accept is if they somehow "convert" this picture into 3D perspective. And Idk if simply editing pre-sets from Unreal engine can achive that ... so please NO.  Even if they had the budget, I would like for them to spend it on something else ... like fixing bugs, and better gameplay and AI. Or MORE pre-made MAPS! This should be priority imo. Looks comes second.
