Sad but true. Unless some miracle happens and H8 is made in diferent setting than Ashan (if there will even be H8 ... for all we know H7 might be last), with totaly diferent art direction behind it.
Also to note is that it's not Ubi only. This trend is much more widespread I'm afraid. I see similar (wow/warhammer-insipired maybe?) art style used in a lot, if not most, popular fantasy games of today. In Blizzard games ofc. it is most seen (Warcraft, Diablo, Heroes of the Storm...), but also the most popular MOBAs (like it or not they are very popular), as well as MMORPGs... And those games are curently dominating (PC) gaming market. Hell even in Dragon Age, which was one of rare exceptions to this, you can see some influence of this art style in newest title: Inquisition. And let's not forget D&D ... look at the art of the old books, and look at them now. Yes it folows same trend. And if D&D has fallen to that (D&D is a fallen game to me anyways), then what hope does Heroes have?
Ubi is just doing what is expected of such company. They are folowing what is currently popular.
Now let me say that to me, that art style was not bad at first. I remember the days when it was "new" and "fresh" ... but after a decade of being (ab)used constantly, I'm quickly getting fed up by it. It lost any uniqueness it once had. Now it's become (to me) the definition of generic. I fear that, as long as this art style will be popular, M&M series will folow it.

I think modesty and excess are some very interesting and enlightening terms to help compare the NWC/Ubisoft approaches.
everything has to be so elaborate and yet simultaneously so ludicrous or patronising in Ashan that it often makes you want to vomit lol

What some claim is "modesty" under NWC, I see as "drab." Seriously, from a visual standpoint, Haven has always been the least interesting out of all the factions; H7's direction is the first time I haven't been completely underwhelmed.
...okay, H6 as well, excluding how obscenely gaudy everything was. H7 Haven strikes me as H6 Haven properly refined.
As for Academy, it's always been a fantastic lineup with nowhere to go but up in terms of visuals. I'm happy with what I've seen for H7.

Then you find "drab" the very heart of the Heroes of Might and Magic franchise, created and developed by a single man (Jon Van Caneghem) through his very own team over a full decade. There is nothing wrong with you appreciating Ashan and what goes with it, but please be so kind not to use such words to qualify what has spell bounded over at least three generation of gamers, allowing yourself to avoid insulting childhood memories and somehow magical and unspeakable moments for many. There should be no need to defend such people as Tracy Iwata, people whom imagination and gift for design helped to build a legend. They are so many worries about how game balance should be done, while Heroes II-III didn’t shine at old times -and still are today- because of that, Heroes II-III shines like the Holy Grail because of the universe it offers to who will dive into, and I personally see III as the most accomplished vision given a continuity. I will always favor original. I have a true respect to the creator, but to the creator who has a vision from which I firmly believe can be intrinsically felt. I believe that if you may find the visuals provided by NWC "drab", it is precisely because they reflect the quality of being unassuming in the estimation of their own abilities.

Hey, hey, relax. Apparently I needed to add a qualifier that I was specifically referring to the Haven faction, and that every iteration of Haven until H6 has interested me the least from a visual standpoint. I wasn't intending to apply it to every aspect of Heroes III, and I don't need a lecture on your personal values and passion for the creators. Yeesh.

Well we don't know a whole lot about the visuals of the other factions yet, so I feel it's a bit early to tell.

Still, I think H2 Haven Knight had a certain charm that the following iterations lacked.

Well the VII artwork seems good till now.I started playing Heroes after 5 so I haven't played the previous to be able to see the difference between old and new.But I have to say VII artwork for Haven looks better than VI.It also adds unit types not used in previous games.I hoped for a better angel model though :/
Mages look cool from hat little we've seen and I'm really waiting to see the elves!Honestly I didn't want Orcs in the game seems I never got really into them...I hope we get all the factions at the end of this game.I would even like a 10th one to be introduced but I don't know if Ashan's lore permits it.Seems like I'm one of the few who still want the games placed on Ashan

I had low expectations for HoMM 6 to begin with, and still I was disappointed. I'm not sure that this kind of tactics works with ubi

I also really like the new design for Haven. Out of all the previous Knight/Castle/Haven factions, this one has to be my one of favourites when it comes to design (it may even be my very favourite yet). So far, the grittier darker Haven is a concept I really like.
