Well, not out of turn, per se, but rather issue a command that gives a troop some benefit right when it acts. Let's assume the following three commands as Combat Techniques:
- Defensive Coverscreen (defensive): Increases defense of the targeted stack by X %, while increasing defense of directly adjacent stacks by X/2 %, as long as that stack is Defending;
- Charge Forward (offensive, melee): Increases attack of the targeted stack by Y/2 % against the next enemy stack attacked this turn, at the expense of X/2 % defense. Units with a scatter debuff receive Y % extra damage from the Charge Forward;
- Focussed Fire (offensive, ranged): Increases Ranged damage of targeted stack against a pinned enemy stack by Y*2 % (pinned enemy stacks are stacks that are unable to move for whatever reason); unpinned stacks receive Y % extra damage and a scatter debuff for one turn;

X and Y are derived from respectively the Defense and Attack scores of the Hero using those Combat Techniques.

Now, let's assume the following synergy bonus:
Charge Forward of a unit that previously received the Defensive Coverscreen bonus from a nearby unit allows them to forego the defense penalty on their charge, increase their attack to Y%, while also pinning the enemy stack in place. Obviously, having a sure way to pin an enemy stack will then open it up for a Focussed Fire barrage in the next turn.

Switching the followup order of those Combat Techniques around, shooting first and then charging yields a different synergy: an enemy unit that falls under the barrage of Focussed Fire will get the scatter debuff, to give the idea of their lines breaking open somewhat under the hail of arrows - opening them up for a devastating Charge in the next turn by another stack.

Like I wrote before, I can see four, maybe five fields in which Combat Techniques can be designed: Offense (melee), Offense (ranged), Defense and Artillery/Siege (perhaps a better name is "Warmachines"). The fifth one may be Warcries, which in effect come close to spells. Not every faction has equal access to all Combat Technique fields. It's unlikely that Undead will benefit much from Warcries, while Orcs have little use of defensive tactics - but moreso for Offense techniques. And where Orc Offensive Techniques are mainly aimed at brute force, those of Dark Elves should be mainly aimed at disrupting enemy Combat Technique chains.

Not every chain of Combat Techniques should yield a synergy bonus, it should make some sense to combine them in succession to deploy a battlefield tactic spanning multiple turns.

I hope this is a better explanation of what I meant with Combat Techniques?

pretty good. still feels to much like spells though. no increased stats or anything would be preferred (creatures should already be recieving that passively) but i think it's close to something i might enjoy. i'd prefer something that allows might heroes to utilize his/her troops more effectively. for example the "hero attacks what target friendly stack attacks" skill for h5 demon-lord is pretty close to something i have in mind. say there is a might skill that allows the hero to issue some sort of command that when target friendly shooter shoots any enemy, all friendly shooters will shoot the same enemy as well. maybe with reduced damage, effectively pinning it down.

Defensive coverscreen could work more like "immune to flanking and take less damage the longer an enemy moved before attacking" or something similar. not sure, since it's still kind of just a temporary stat-boost. not sure how to really deal with more static ones tbh.

charge seems ok though. loose some defensive power in order to hit harder and add scatter debuff, making them more vulnerable to more charges seems pretty ok to me.

stuff like " follow this enemy" or " attack same target" etc, allowing might-heroes more control over their troops rather than "increase x stat for this attack" or similar. your idea is good, but it still feels to h6 warcry-esque, which really just was spells for might-heroes. still, better than i originally thought so i would be ok with it (really only h6 gave any might-actives and they sucked terribly).

kinda tired atm, so not thinking clearly, but still, gj. interesting system

As visible in some battle scenes, perhaps in small battle maps, there was a very limited number of places available to position your troops by using the Tactics feature.

I don't know if it was already stated somewhere, explained or shown, but if you happen to have 7 large units under your command, how are you going to position them in a map that fits only 5 of those units side-by-side in that Tactics area? Could it be that maps grow bigger or smaller depending on the size of your armies or will those sizes be related to terrain, game time ... does anyone know?

Such situatuion does't happen quite often. Usually, there are 3 big and 4 small units, therefore there is always some free space.

I believe if you have 7 large units you can only use 5/7 units in the battle and 2 will be left out. Of course they could introduce tactics and advanced tactics skills/abilities to add more space, but I doubt that(probably just basic tactics ability will be there for extra 1-square width-line.

Yet, it may happen. They must present a reasonable solution due that.

That's what I was wondering too. However, I also think that they might make the battle map bigger or smaller depending on the max required space you may need for your troops or if you have great numbers. They said that maps could be scripted when regarding their sizes, but normal battles must have a default response that would cover that issue - whenever you had only large units on battlefield. Having randomness define that sounds a bit too odd to me.

That's really cool, and it fits nicely together with the other ones you drew earlier.

It's unfortunate that it doesn't gel well together with the Ubi aesthetic though, with all their overly designed shoulder pads and whatnot.

Someone mentioned using the waspwort as a unit in a possible modded-in swampy fortress. I definitely agree with that. Heck, the grail building for fortress back in H3 was thing weird flower/carnivorous plant thing.

That could actually be a pretty cool thing. A swampy race of lizardmen that worships some kind of divine/semidivine carnivorous plant with "tendrils" growing in all the swampy places of Ashan... not sure how that would relate to the dragon gods, but hey.

Anyways, sorry for rambling.

Looking forward to stronghold reveal!

Keep in mind that I just threw this together quickly . Designing such a system would take multiple people multiple hours to flesh out in detail. Some of the suggestions you made could be included as a different Combat Technique, for instance. The only limit is creativity .

After writing that post, I've thought a bit more about the synergy. Basically, each Technique has an effect on the battlefield, which may be boosted by the Techniques used before. As such, it becomes a bit of a conditional thing; "Effect A happens, and if X and Y happened before, then it gains B as well, but if Z happened, it gains C instead" - and others may derive from that again as well ("If A happened with B, then ..."). It's kinda like weaving stuff together to form the tapestry of your battleplans.

Thinking on that, it's rather amusing having Gorgon and Medusa in the same game although so different from each other.

The Gorgons in Heroes III are based on the Gorgons from Dungeons & Dragons which are mythical beasts resembling a bull not the Gorgons from Greek mythology.

You guys are just awesome! Thank you so much for your support!

@ Galaad: I'm aiming for faster still. Thanks for the acknowledgement
@ Stevie: Humbling words man, truly! I'll try that, but I don't think it's that simple XD
@ Sir_Godspeed: enjoyed your comment and the idea of the plant worshiping is out if the box thinking. A chrysalis of sorts perhaps (?). You should check out War-Overlords take on the Swamp Faction, he's got really nice things going on there!
@ Gryphs: I'm glad you enjoy them
@ Storm-Giant: One of my favorites too. As a general idea I'd go with most of War-Overlord's description of the creature for the Ashan setting.
@ PandaTar: Heroes 3 got inspired by D&D and this article explains what happened
@ ThatRedSarah: Much obliged, I'll keep 'em coming. It would be grate indeed to work officially on the game. Thanks for the thought!
@ Thanir: Exactly. Thanks for the additional info!
@ EPICUSDOOMICUS: glad you like my work
