Just going to say the dungeon and necropolis stories seem more interesting, well going by their summaries.

Geez... I wonder how it was possible?
Steadwick was never conquered until 1165 AS (Heroes 3), when Kreegan and Nighon forces attacked.
Necromancers Guild from Deyja poisoned Nicolas Gryphonheart (well, Sandro with Lord Haart hands to be exactly) but that's all. They didn't attack Erathia and they weren't allies of Eeofol and Nighon during fall of Steadwick.

because Castle Gryphonheart being attacked =/= Steadwick being conquered, also nothing ever said that they didn't throw some forces at Erathia before resurrecting Gryphonheart lol

Lore states otherwise. Erathia would also retaliate against Deyja before king Nicolas would be revived. Or he would, but their plans would be stopped.

They didn't retaliate when King's body was stolen. They were under invasion of Nighon and Eofol and were fighting them.

No, but I was saying if they were if they did attack Erathia during the Kreegan-Nighon invasion.

OK, show me hero Loscan in Heroes 3.
And I mean show me this hero in game and in game manual, not just by editing files and creating him today or using Photoshop.
As for Steadwick's Fall...
Quote: Steadwick's Fall
Catherine Ironfist has enlisted aid from Bracada and AvLee. She knows we are close to Steadwick. We must occupy Steadwick before she arrives. Once we own Erathia's capitol, not even Catherine Ironfist will wrench it from our hands.
To win, you must capture the city of Steadwick within 3 months.
Intro 1
You are to be congratulated on your progress so far. You have laid waste to Eastern Erathia, and are now within striking distance of the Erathian capital of Steadwick. You must capture the capital quickly!
Intro 2
Not only have Bracada and AvLee sent reinforcements, but we have received news that Queen Catherine Ironfist is marching a sizeable army from the south. We must control the capital and its garrisons before she arrives.
News
You have just received a report on the progress of Queen Catherine. Forces from Nighon and Eeofol are attempting to delay her march to Steadwick, but doubt that they can delay her more than two or three months.
News
You receive a report from the south. Queen Catherine's forces have been sufficiently delayed, allowing you at least two months more to reach the capitol, but our own forces have suffered significant losses. Do not let their sacrifice go to waste.
News
You receive a report from the south. Our forces continue to throw themselves in the path of Queen Catherine's armies, yet she continues to march northward. You have, at most, three or four weeks before she can reach the capitol.
Warning
Queen Catherine's march continues - her forces are just two weeks away. If you do not hurry, we will not have time to secure the capitol before her arrival.
Warning
Your scouts report sighting Queen Catherine's army seven days to the southwest. If she reaches the capitol before you, all is lost.
Ending
This morning, a massive army lead by Queen Catherine Ironfist arrived at the Erathian capitol of Steadwick. We have no choice but to retreat our forces. You have failed us... miserably.
Just to remind you, in this scenario you choose between Inferno and Dungeon forces to command, not between Inferno, Dungeon and Necropolis.
Necromancers from Deyja attacked Erathia when Catherine Ironfist was fighting nighonian forces. Their campaign start after Dungeon & Devils, where you capture Steadwick not during it.
Quote: Steadwick's Liberation
Early intelligence reports that forces from Nighon and Eeofol have barricaded themselves inside the Steadwick Valley. With all land access blocked, they must be receiving supplies through underground tunnels. You will either need to find the passage they are using to enter the valley or find a way over the mountains. The good news is that we have the assistance of Bracada, and if we can reach them, AvLee as well. There is little else to say. We do not stop until Steadwick is liberated.
Quote: A Gryphon's Heart
Our spies tell us that the tomb of King Gryphonheart is located in the town of Stonecastle, near Erathia's northern border, in a place that was clear of the war with Nighon and Eeofol. Seek this place out and capture it so that we may animate the body of the King. You must also seek out the Spirit of Oppression and bring it to Stonecastle, as it is one of the items we need for the ritual to animate the King's body. But you must act quickly - the body will be of no use to us if its spirit departs.
EDIT:
Necromancers armies of Deyja indeed attacked Erathia... but during their 4th scenario, with Lich Gryphonheart at command and they only focused on northern part of country before Catherine counter-attacked.

Nobody knows that, it is just implied that necromancers and death knights had nothing to do with Steadwick's Fall. None. For you could even make it look Erathian knights and clerics attacked Steadwick.
Besides, the writer didn't think of involving necromancers to attack Steadwick to have a vampire bite Gauldoth. Heck, the idea of making Gauldoth as a character didn't even start until Heroes IV was being developed.
Just saying one cannot simply position things to make it look someone else did something, like your example of necromancers attacking Steadwick. It is just a dark hole, which needs to be clarified further. But I ain't an official to explain how's and why's.

none of that text is discounting what I say at all, you ask whether Terry Ray backstory is possible the Necromancers attacked Steadwick and kidnapped Gauldoth, there you have your answer, you can literally do it yourself in Heroes 3 so yes is possible lol
even if not, they could easily have attacked Steadwick at a slightly earlier time before Catherine returned, there is nothing to say otherwise lol

But futher canon texts in-game not mention any Necromancers during Battle(s) of Steadwick. So yes, you can do this but that event would be non-canon anyway.

There is - Dungeon and Devils campaign mentions that Steadwick - Erathia's capital - never fell into enemy hands and this campaign is about to achieve this task.

I think I will let official NWC writer Terry Ray be the judge of what is canon in the story or not, not a random fan, lol

do you understand that attacking Steadwick and entering the castle is not the same thing as conquering Steadwick? where does the Gauldoth backstory say the necromancers conquered the city? lol

Attack and enter inside the castle ("found [him] in one of rooms") = fell into enemies hands, while texts in game says otherwise.

attack and enter inside the castle =/= fall into enemies hands, otherwise by your logic I myself conquered the city of Steadwick in MM7 when I went through the castle doors and attacked the guards lol
not to mention the castle is only one small part of the city, if the castle fell it doesn't mean the city of Steadwick fell, this is really simple discussion lol

You do realise that to enter a castle, you first need to defeat its protectors and to do that, you also need lead a siege to Steadwick?
Of course you can use a secret entrance but first you need to avoid flying Griffins, who hunt for intruders and second, you won't be able to "visiting" any rooms in castle but run for you (un)life.
Also it's nice that you are trying to explain Terry Ray's lack of vast HoMM/MM knowledge (no one knows all details) but it's not his first mistake done in Heroes Chronicles or Heroes 4.
