The problem is that HoMM 4 did squares as well - but a world better, battlefield being very big in terms of squares and creatures being between 3x3 and 6x6, translating into two sizes in between. (If you equal 3x3 with 1x1 and 6x6 with 2x2, HoMM 4 offered two in-between sizes, ratios 9:16:25:36 with a lot more interesting battlefield geometry.

I agree with the sentiment though I never particularly liked the H4 battlefield. Tiles felt too tiny.

There's no way you can appropriately reconcile hexes and big creatures. And there goes your positional strategy. This is the only thing keeping me from getting fully behind them.

Sorry to jump in the conversation, but I was wondering how many maps were there in the first beta? And is it known how many maps will be in this beta?

There were 2 maps in the first beta and in the second one there will be 4 maps.

There s a little problem concerning square and flanking.

2x2 Creatures are easier to flank, there s potentially 5 squares...

@Malax I could be wrong, but aren't those question marks front-flanks(or rather there is normal flank and back-stab)? So what exactly is the problem..? Also I believe you got 2 fronts which should be front flanks actually in same pic. That's how I recall them being in the demo/alpha at least, but I guess that can be tested soon enough with the actual beta.

And as I've said before, the flanking system was just bad idea to implement. If it had been done for specific units like harpies and assasins for example it would've made a whole lot more sense and look less ridiculous than as general mechanic.

An installation was available on Steam, but I figured it was the first Beta. Went ahead anyway until I got stuck on Uplay asking for the registration key which it detected that I already have, but it doesn't proceed further to open the game.

I don't really understand what you mean, care to elaborate?

Shapes that don't center on a hex are notoriously badly configured, especially when the number of hexes is small. Trying to fit a creature inside a 3 hex shape (all touching eachother) makes for a unit that's only marginally larger than a unit fitting within a single hex.

Using a central hex with hexes in rings around it makes for a much "rounder" shape as well as circumvent the size issues with off-center configurations. Putting small units on 7 hexes (central hex + 6 in a ring) and large ones on 19 hexes (central hex + 6 in an inner ring + 12 in the outer ring), the ratio between small and large is 19:7, or a factor of 2,7.

Moving up one extra ring, we get 37:19, a ratio that's only 1,95.

The mathematical formula for calculating the total number of hexes in a central hex configuration like that equals (n^2 - n) * 3 + 1, where n is the radius, including the central hex.

On the other hand squares with 2x2 units and diagonals with different movement cost than lines hardly make for good positional strategy. I am not against different unit sizes but tactical movement is more important and neither H5 nor H6 did a good job at it.

You can still make unit size relevant with visual aid(taller units, ground shaking) and giving units appropriate abilities like increased reach, knock-back effects, immunity or resistance to relocation, wider area of attack etc. Not necessarily universal, I prefer individuality.

Example 1

Example 2

Example 3

Example 4

Example 5

Example 6

Cavaliers and snakes occupy most of the hex, foot soldiers less. Pixies are clearly smaller than humans. Demons and tinmen () are taller than normal troops. Beholders look huge even in 1 tile! Perhaps mounted troops should look a little bigger compared to foot soldiers but that is not hard to arrange.

So I'm playing Sylvan be Dungeon on one of the new maps right now and have to say I'm really impressed. Compared to this the first beta was more like pre-alpha.

It has a level of polish already and I'm yet to find any bugs. Really well done Limbic!
