We were talking about loading times in combination with 3D models, not actual battlefield play. Within 10 seconds, you're looking at the battlefield.

As it is, the guy plays extremely slow to begin with . But AoW3 also has a very nice flanking system in place, which actually works intuitively, rather than the failure of the flanking in Heroes 7. As such, tactical positioning of your units is important, which means you don't have the mindless clashing of units as is currently the case in Heroes 7. Positioning takes time.

Also, there is the blue bar bottom middle that looks like control bar for a cd or video player - you can fast forward the cam AND the opponent moves ...

They were very reasonable with a view on fluidity. For example, you can surround a TOWN completely, and in that case you should see the town circle and all your units surrounding the town (like in open field - but they found that too clumsy with all the graphics, so they "cheat" with 3d sieges.

@yogi
If I get the time to chit-chat on skills, I'll start a thread. Still, when there was a contest of towns last year, I wrote a glimpse of what I would be interested in discussing HERE. Sadly, I ran out of time (and limit of number of characters, for that matter) and couldn't elaborate an overall look upon an example of skill system. So it's basically a list written at the beginning of the post, if you want to see for yourself.

Mind you, it's a long post, so take your time.

I would like to see far less realistic and more simplified graphics. Having 3D models that aim for photo realistic look behaving in the same static way as chess pieces behave is odd. The overall degree of realism should be consistent among the game mechanics, visuals, sounds etc. One doesn't expect an abstract puzzle game to have realistic recorded sounds or a flight simulator to have 8 bit sounds. The same way a super abstract world of turn based battles shouldn't be displayed with super detailed and realistic visuals. It's too detailed compared to the game mechanics in most 3d turn based games.

It would make it easier to understand too.

And there is no advantage H5 can claim, is just an awful Heroes game. People who didn't intensively played H2 nor H3 will surely find in it good things. But there is one thing Heroes game were kings in, is readability, fluidity, speed and friendly interface. All this was gone with the 3D bad handling of H5 and more.

As chance would have it, I installed the complete H5 game on a one year old laptop, because I wanted to check into the H5.5RC8beta. Before I installed the mod I wanted to check whether everything was ok with the installation - with a ten year old game the settings will be wrong anyway in the options, because the software doesn't know the hardware.
I had forgotten it entirely, but the options menu allows to customize the game to make it lightning fast. You can simply switch off all the things that use up time, like the in-town fly-by - double click on town or icon will switch immediately to town screen, without delay - you can customize graphic detail to fit your machine, you can accelerate all movement, of player heroes, of AI heroes, creatures on the battlefield, you can switch off that close-up camera perspective that slows things down, you can switch off eye-candy, and you can even pick the HoMM adventure perspective.
The game memorizes your battle set-ups as well, so unless you don't want to change it, even the Tactics screen doesn't take long (and is in fact fast then the one in H3 when you have Tactics).
That leaves the odd click more with the interface, but that's a question of getting used to it.

With 5.5 the game is definitely a must-have. Just some friendly advice.

Missed this, I said at least twice in the discussion that I didn't reject a new angle, only that I favor following on to the tradition, more safe as is those games that worked best, it is you with JJ who are rejecting a working formula, because, competing with the best titles is too much JJ said? Even without any mods III and V still stand on their own much better than what came next and you both agree with that. The old games are here to guide and inspire, not to hinder or enslave.

"Fast", "Quick load", those terms lost their meaning in the modern bad optimized games direction. I was hooked by H2 then consequently by H3 because I could play epic maps, with 7 boosted AI players all allied vs me, without any slow down in the game and just enjoy action.

Nowadays, everything betrayed that fluidity, just check awfully coded games as Civilization 5, where nothing but a "quick load"  middle/late game means minutes. When game crashes and you need to find the reason, you have to restart at every testing phase, count 3-5 minutes when mods enabled, is insane. Making mods for it costed me weeks of wasted time when only waiting for the game to start. And don't talk to me about what means "heavy modded", I run WoG with hundred of thousands of codes in the background and yet it processes then in a second, then updating codes can be done on the fly, not having to close the game. This is difference between mediocre and excellent.

I was watching yesterday that guy trying to generate a random map at max settings in H7, and it took him 5 minutes! Yet nobody considers putting the game down BECAUSE of that reason, while I would do it in the second.

Same is with H5, people start arguing about some skill wheel and good ideas, but who cares if their presence costs the game the .... gaming itself. How many of you finished a Impossible size map with max players in H5, and without going through the torture of having to deal with broken saves and crashes?

Is simply impossible. Gaming experience stops there for me.

Yes, while AoW3 shows 3D can work for TBS I don't believe there is a need for it anyway, 2D in modern resolution could lead to most gorgeous game ever made if talented and passionate artists, 3D is only a trend used for the sake of $$$ and not for the gaming experience which IMO should come first.
