Really? I have never heard this before. You'd think that they'd be better in a big/rich scenario. Either they have a long time to build up their forces, or they get all the resources they need to build up quickly. Seems like a win win to me.

Aren't fully upgraded Castle or Tower stronger than Stronghold/Fortress armies? Their advantage is being cheaper than other towns but this advantage disapper in big/rich maps.

Well Castle and Tower are probably near equal in strength when fully upgraded. I'd say Fortress would come in second in this scenario, simply because of its units special abilities. Weakness, Death Stare, Petrify, etc. Stronghold has strong creatures, but they don't have as many annoying/crippling special abilities.

So yes, Castle and Tower are stronger, with Fortress coming in hot on their heels and Stronghold holding third.

^^ And that actually makes pretty good sense, since Tower armies are most expensive of the 4 factions mentioned and Stronghold is the cheapest, Castle is second most expensive and Fortress third most is expensive. So it should be Tower>Castle>Fortress>Stronghold.
The advantage of playing Stronghold and Fortress is they are cheap and easy to build (except for original crystal cost for Stronghold) hopefully they can use their speed advantage and spare gold constructively and find some good Mage Guilds elsewhere.

HotA introduced level 4 spell shrines on random maps so likely Stronghold/Fortress can learn Ressurection, Meteor Shower or Chain Lightning.
Second on Jebus Cross i often see Wyvern or Cyclops power stacks. Good builded Tazar can make army survive of much stronger enemy. Tower require a lot of rare resources as non upgraded tower is slow and you will have only 1 shooter.
Stronghold require wood and ore for 4 creature dwellings, gems for ogre upgrade and crystal for upgrade cyclops and bears
Fortress need sulfur and mercury for serpents, gorgons, wyverns and hydra. But you will likely in month 2 have stronger Stronghold/Fortress army then tower.

I think you are wrong. And I also know that you are wrong. When people say about a certain HoMM town it's the best they usually refer to the creatures' stats of that town. And, taken 1 by 1 Castle creatures beat all other town's creatures in stats. Which is why your point is wrong

Very true. In the stat game Castle has every faction beat. However, Castle has the least amount of secondary abilities for their creatures and the majority of the other towns do. Which greatly levels the playing field for the other towns.

nope. 1 vs 1 Castle still wins for most tiers, which is exactly what I was saying

Eh. I don't really care much for the whole tier vs tier. The battles are sometimes way to controlled, with no surprise variables or artifacts or spells that might change the game. Which one could argue is part of the game.

Sure in a 1v1 with equal stats, magic, artifacts, and units, Castle would win hands down everytime. But seldom is it you come across something so equal in the actual game. Unless you are playing a map where the goal is to do such a thing and then have one showdown with your opponent to see who wins.

I know, and I fully agree with you that a lot of variables are in question, but whenever I see people posting "which town is the best" with regards to HoMM 99% of the time they want to know which town is the best in a 1 vs 1 scenario. And to that question you can only answer like I've answered.

Otherwise, of course that many things can decide the outcome of a game. After all, this is a strategy game and in (good) strategic games many things can make "good" towns seem bad, and vice-versa

Ah true.

I never really bought into Castle being the 100% strongest. I always found that each town has its strengths and weaknesses and it's all about how you play and the strategy you play with.

But you're right. In a controlled 1v1 Castle will almost always win.

What is "controlled 1:1"? You never play in a "controlled" manner, like you put X weeks worth of populations against each other for one epic fight, there are hundreds of other variables to take into account. Castle is a lazy town, on decently rich maps it doesn't take much though to play it when you have the best level 7 creature in the game by a fairly good margin and you can get it in ridiculous numbers if you're lucky with the Conservatories but try to play the town without having a good external supply of Gems, like it often happens in HotA, and you'll suddenly discover how much it sucks to lack a Resource Silo providing your most needed resource. The game's typically decided much more on the adventure map and not so much in the final battle(s) between the big armies.

depends on whether fortress can land the key specials or not (ie. Hydras consistently attacking 2-3 enemies; gorgons being able to attack archangels; basilisks, preferably split into two stacks, turning two stacks into stone, or at least one like Crusaders).

Depending on how the battle goes, Fortress is either insanely good or below average. It's one of the most varied towns out there.

Castle is mostly linear. You'll get most of your units no matter what you really do.That is a huge advantage to many players because it means consistency.

Maybe Archangels are a bit too strong?, especially with conservatories.
Castle also has very good damage potential with 2 units attacking twice, Royal Griffins unlimited retaliations and huge growth and Champions charge.
Not many downsides to Castle really.

Castle definitely needs serious nerf gem isn't problem, grass has also gardens (also mills) to provide them. Angel/Archangel stack thanks to conservatories.

The overll damage output it insane and even becomes unstopabble, with moral and mass bless. Though I still think Tower is slighly stronger than Castle but I may be wrong.

Still prefer to ban them in HotA.

cause it's not the strongest at all

it's a very solid performer and top3 I'd say but in hota you can get more consistent results with other towns
