Now after many tries i did it finally.
But the main battle is against the main rampart hero.
In this battle, you need much luck to win, and many spellpoints to ressurect a big part of your lost army.
all other battles aren´t that hard

When the hints in this threat (one or two sides before) don´t help you enough, than feel free to ask exactly where your "dead end" comes along and i will try to help you, what I "learned" from "commando" and "ironfist".

BTW, info for commando:

I mentioned some posts above about my problem with the "ressurection"-spell.
The same problem came to me with the "waterwalk"-spell at the necro-towns. But i know, on my third or forth try, when i opened the green guard, the necro came over the water one day later, so there was waterwalk in a mageguild....

Very interesting situation came along with the "sentinel":

When i opened the black guard for getting the brown tent and the lions shield, about 3 or 4 weeks later, the orange warlock came in the fortress lands with nearly 2000 black dragons and other good armies. So i let him alone, cause without pathfinding, he has a hard job to explore this area.
I killed the other heroes, took all his dungeon towns, went to the dark blue tent to free dragonslayer and hoped, when i took all his towns, that "the sentinel" with his all 99 skills and his all 9999 dragons and titans army will be abandoned.
So "the sentinel" had a 2 week long journey at the sea (i think because of the cover of darkness..) and than landed at the beach, where the 3 seer´s huts were standing close to each other. I clicked him and saw something about "few titans" "few rustdragons" "pack nomads" and so on....
I couldn´t believe what i saw and casted "visions"
If you believe it or not, he had a NEGATIVE number of titans and rust dragons (something about -52410...) and all the other dragons (fairies, crystal, azure) were gone!
So i wanted to fight against him to see what happens.
His -52.410 Rustdragons attacked my behemots and did 1 (ONE) point of damage (???????). Same with the titans.
So i killed him and got all his nice artefacts.
Do you know what happened there?

And at the end, i tried the ultimate battle for the orb, but failed first time, so i decided to kill all heroes and capture all towns to win this scenario (was a little bit easier with the AVATAR )

Finally i have to say, it was the BEST map, i ever played,
GREAT JOB, commando

(Suggested by the author)
Troops: Ancients, something faster(with artifacts) than Azure dragon (the best would Archangels if you have a lot of them) gremlins, gnolls, goblins, ..., etc.

Blind faery dragons then the two groups of dragons attacking ancients (you need at leats 4000+ ancients to stand those attacks)then blind the remaining dragons; resurrect gremlins, gnolls, goblins...(AA will be very helpful here). Sacrifice them to bring back Ancients. Summon elemental(immune fear). Take advantage of expert blind and the victory will be yours.

A very strange bug indeed - never heard of it nor have I ever come across it, not in this map at least. Anyway, thanks for the info: I'm updating the SoD version so I'll make sure Sentinel has no yummy artifacts just in case the bug strikes again

I don't see how you could kill all heroes and capture all towns: there's an unreachable green conflux in the north-western underworld that is required to trigger an 18-month time limit (15 in the updated AB version).
What's that about the Avatar? If you're referring to "Swamped in Gore" then I haven't the faintest idea of what you're talking about A very bad map, even for a first attempt.

Thanks for the feedback and for your kind words. I'll send you the updated version as soon as it's ready.

Cheers!

There are dozens of tactics, depending on your army composition. Ironfist's suggestions are really meant for the final battle for the orb but the general principle is fine also for the battle against Dragonmaster. Maybe bring a black dragon (immune to armour of the damned) to retain initiative. Watch out for the sacrifice spell!

@ commando

You don´t know what i mean with "The Avatar"???
But you made the map, didn´t you?

You´re right, there is a confluxtown at the very northwest corner. But when you remember, you have set some "holes" in the black part of the underground map, between this conflux and the "maze of t...". So when you´re standing in front of the oneway-teleport left of "dwarvenheim", cast fly, go through the teleport into the maze, strait left to the small coast where the ship was, there´s NO cursed underground and you can cast dimdoor on the holes!
With 3 dims, you´re in front of the conflux and can beat the last green hero...
So i thought, this was an alternative solution, made by yourself as the mapmaker, if the last fight was a bit too hard....

@ dorum

You also can take your normal fighting troops like titans, chaoshydras and so on. I had about 220 Archangels and 650 Archmagi (your spells cost 2 points less!!), 1k chaoshydras, 450 titans, about 5000 ancientBehemots, 4500 Grandelves, 3000 dragonflies. Now make it like ironfist mentioned above (blind fairies, and then all the others).
You will see, that the dragons WON´T attack your AncientBehemots, but your shooters. When every enemy-unit has been blinded, ressurect your Archangels completely.
Now at my first try, i had not enough spellpoints to ressurect all of my units (had about 1700 spellpoints).
But with my second try, i got it this way:

When i cast ressurection, i could res. about 12 or 13 titans, so if you´ve lost all the titans (450) you have to cast nearly forty times this spell by 14 points per spell. This were 560 points only for your titans. But there are nearly 1000 chaoshydras to ressurect, and the grandelves and ther magi and the dragonflies and the Archangels!!!

The solution is, that you allways CLONE your Archangels, next round you ressurect a unit with this 220 Clones (I think they ressurected about 70 titans!!), next round you cast a frostring near this clone, so that he is gone. Next round you cast this clone again, and this cloned AA´s can ressurect AGAIN! So that is 18(?) points for clone and 7 points for frostring makes 25 points for ressurect 70 titans. If you cast two times ressurection, it will bring you about 26 titans back with a cost of 28 spellpoints. You see the difference?
So i lost every unit except the AncientBehemots (some of them too, because of retaliation..) on the first few rounds of the battle and with the tactic above, i needed only about 850 spellpoints to win this battle without any lost!

I tried this and it doesn't seem to work; I tried it on my laptop too and I had a few friends try it on their computer with their own original version of the game and it never worked there either. Could you send me the savegame, maybe? Thanks

@Dorum:
Bring along plenty of level 1 units for the sacrifice spell. Bring archangels and all war machines. Remember to block the gate with the rust dragon (btw, I suppose you're using the AB version...). Once you manage to get rid of his black dragons (try cloning the ancients...) and red dragons it's quite easy: blind his remaining troops, taking care to stay on the dead red dragons to prevent Dragonmaster from resurrecting them with the sacrifice spell. Don't worry if you lose all your other troops: as long as most or all of your ancients survive, it's more than enough. If you manage to save your archangels then so much the better

Great work For the final battle, well...it's not absolutely mandatory but if you find the orb of vulnerability it'll be a cakewalk

I was playing your old map "Swamped in Gore" this weekend and I found that it's a bit unbalanced?? It was very easy thru the whole game but the last battle was kind of like...a huge big surprise! ^o^

Hehe, that was my very first map (three years ago, using the RoE editor): I was just messing around with the editor - I was totally ignorant of hero specialities, the best spells, balance and so on - and came up with this ridiculous adventure. It was kind of fun, in a certain way. The final battle was a fairly good example of hit-and-run: attack the enemy using a hero with fast creatures, expert fire magic, berserk and the orb of vulnerability, cast berserk a few times, retreat. Repeat as necessary, then finish the enemy off using the Avatar. I think my best score (when I was even worse a player than I am now) was month 5 week 2 or something along those lines. Not sure if I'll ever update the map: I'd be better off remaking it from scratch.

My mistake.

Here is a way to defeat dragonmaster in UtB_SoD, suggested by SuperWaterKing(translated name) from gamerhome.

troops:
archdevils, ancients, one goldie, on goldie,
..., one goldie
1. cast forgetfulness on medusas
2. use forcefield to protect ancients & AD
3. anti-magic on AD
Then clone ancients to kill everything

@oread
In addition to those great XL maps you guys have mentioned, the following one is also worth to have a try:
EPICA (SoD), by Nickolay Popov.

Yeah I've played this map. The beginning is quite challenging (AI heroes have anti-blind artifacts) but after that it is kinda easy.
Anyway, I agree with u that it is worth a try.

Just some thoughts.........

Hi, all,

I've played most of the maps you've mentioned. At the beginning, it's quite challenging and then I feel a bit (well, just a bit) lack of challenge.

It seems to me that most of the recommended XL maps have the following features:-

a). Magic is a must for you to success. I don't think you can rely on might heroes to win (at least I can't).

b). Most are "closed maps" i.e. a lot of border guards or quest guards to fence off the AI which have an overwhemlingly head start than the players.

c). You definely need some spells to help you against AI with x100 more powerful troops than you. The key spells include forcefield and berserk (for hit&run) etc.

d) If player is allowed to pick necro, it will be too unbalancing. (well, "loneknight" give a good hint on how to
limit the power of necro e.g. maybe you can set quest guards asking for legions of skele.........)

e) some troops are definely more advantageous than others. I will always pick no-retarliation troops and shooters over any other powerful troops. 200 AA will be no good than 10 AD in the hand of a reasonably good player vs AI.

I guess you will be quite familiar with the "keys of success" to make a good map. Actually I enjoyed all the good maps you've have mentioned especially the Eternal Love (campaign), Lord of War (I played it 3 + 1/2 times) and loneknight (3 times) and I enjoyed not only the tactic challeng but also the fantastic storylines......
Thanks all map-makers for their efforts.

Well, I just wonder do you have any suggestions on any good player-made open maps, with access to all positions (towns) and allow more tactical consideration e.g. resource management and troop arrangement etc. Thanks

Hello everyone!

I've read this thread and there are a lot of posts from people who need some good decent maps....  I have lots of them at my Yahoo! club.  They're all made with the "Shadow of Death"/WoG editor and they all have the standard "kill everything, take over all the towns" obective.  Here's the URL:

This thread has re-emerged by virtue of being moved to the MapHaven Guild forum ...

Rich, if you'd like your maps to get to a slightly wider audience than your own website will yield, would you like to submit them to MapHaven?  It's easy enough.  The only wrinkle is that for each map you have to have had someone else play it to completion and tell you if there were any improvements needed.  If this hasn't happened yet, you might want to use MapHaven's playtesting facility instead.

The Gholam

Quote:
It's a pleasure to notice that I am not the only one still playing homm3 XL SP maps!

Last week I stumbled across a relatively new map on AW, not yet mentioned in this thread: "The Gholam"

I would rate it one of the top 5 maps ever, close to Lord of War and kill4pwr! It feels much more realistic than for example EmpWorldI/II, and doesn't get as tedious or even boring in the second half - perhaps due to the large oceans and the consistent, well driven storyline.

Another incredible feature of The Gholam is the uneqalled useage of the 5 travelling spells (TP,DD,WW, SummonBoat, Fly). They ALL become available at certain points, and they ALL are needed to access new areas - while perfectly embedded into the storyline.
(EDIT: TownPortal is actually *not really* needed to access new areas )

The difficulty of the map is not overwhelming, some battles are indeed too easy IMO. The final battle however is a blast, it took me over a dozend serious tries to win against the 1k killer dragons commanded by an all-99-guy without the orb of vulnerability...

I started this map last week after reading your post.(I'm new here) I totally agree on how good the map is but have a question for you. How did you beat the Gholam?

Berzerk fails against the Azure Dragons most of the time and my month 6 army got hammered repeatedly. I think I have all of the power ups(A53,D67,P61,K69) but the Gholams 99 stats are causing trades of over 100-1 between the AD and my (348)FDs. So how did you do it?

Uh oh, that was 10 months ago, and I really do not know it anymore. Except that it was TOUGH, that I had to try several different tactics, and of course that you always need an extra portion of luck in any big fight involving resistance.

If your attack value is indeed 50 below the Gholam, you should try Frenzy. It can help a LOT, especially vs. Azure Dragons. Lateley I replayed The Lone Knight, and the key to success in many battles were frenzied skeletons (with sometimes even good luck).

If everything fails, just wait a month.
And if still everything fails, just wait an additional month .

I don't recall if you could assemble the Undead Cloak in the Gholam map. If it's the case, do everything to build up your Lich King stacks -this works always- !

Finally, you could check the level editor for any hidden powerup events you might have missed.
