Though I read in the posts here he was supposed to have various kinds of dragons ? Here he has normal Dungeon units (minotaurs, scorpicores, medusas, red and black dragons,6k each). oh well guess I'll have to try again !

Ah, you're probably playing the old AB version - the SoD version is quite different.

Glad you enjoyed the map =)

You're right, the SoD version on MapHaven still has the old troop array (the difference is in DM's artifacts). I have a newer version with azures, rusts and enchanters... and the badge of courage =)

Happy gaming

"Grandmaster" is my favorite map by far, but it's hard to find an un-broken link for it now... it might be on AstralWizard, but last time I checked there, the link was broken.

If you mean the map by Charles Watkins (who does tend to do very good maps), the AstralWizard collection was moved to MapHaven when AstralWizard retired, and the map you're talking about can be found at:
http://heroes.mycomport.com/cgi-bin/opt/MapHaven/map_details.cgi?MAP_ID=151

:-)  Together with many other very good HOMM3 maps!

Too bad that H3Trio is down, it took my "2 Friends" map with it. However, it's available at

XL, 2-layer, Shadow of Death required

Jukka Mikkonen a.k.a Sir Rechet

Hey, great map!
Takes quite a lot of time, and gets a bit tedious in the second half (but that applies to most XL maps), but I can really recommend it to everyone.

Especially cool is the completely different gameplay for at least the first half: Because you are forced to play without slow, blind & resurrection, because your empire grows really slowly (7th level creatures are available extremely late, and money is always rare), and because town portal becomes available only right before the end.
Not to speak of the general logistical challenges (I played the no-tavern version). Trading low-level creatures for better ones at seer huts is a quite a nice idea also.

About the final battle...you can sneak past the two heroes to get to the final town without finishing off either faction first. But when I did so, I didn't have the slightest chance to actually take the town. However, capturing the overlord empire, mainly for getting the town portal scroll finally did the trick - but not before upgrading all available archers, elves & mages, and giving all of Sir Rechet's troops to Queen Sarah...And even then I was quite lucky as my 40 Azures and 900 Psychic Elementals lasted exactly long enough to keep the 6k Vampires and 2k Dread Knights busy until finally decimated by my Titans, Enchanters & Sharpshooters...

Is it all right if I advertise my own XL maps here

---

http://home.att.net/~tivoligardens/martello.html

Good V. Evil by Lt Hunter and Shellost, the one XL by myself are both amazing maps for different reasons.

Shellost is challenging and has a reasonably intriguing plot

The only possible problem with it is that there may be a few bugs to work out yet since I have yet to beat the game... but that's more becuase I'm horrid at Heroes than any other reason- the map is very challenging.

Good v. evil was based on the old H2 map of the same name and is wicked fun.

In addition, I have a great Mapmaking guide at my site-

http://home.att.net/~tivoligardens/maptips.htm

-
also, if you're just interested in a LARGE map: The Angellic Alliance is pretty good-

Here's a few reviews about it.

http://home.att.net/~tivoligardens/reviews.htm#angel
-
As for the Noveno Cycle- it's an epic tale, and I have much literature on it, including a list of characters on the site. While you play the game, the story is revealed in RUMORS, character bios, etc.

Basically, you play as several characters and track the rise and fall of a king and his kingdom as they battle Barbarians, Wizards, Demons, Necromancers, etc.

6. Rampart.
Now you can use the AD trick...AD's trick: use Force field to protect you ADs and Titans (an armo cart is also very helpful in protecting you Titans)
Kill all dragons and blind all remaining ones. Troops to bring with: Titans, ADs, mages, enchanters, several rust dragons.

Now how should this work?!? I tried it dozends of times without success. You can't protect two stacks against small troops like Dendroids. And anyway, FF lasts two rounds, AI is likely to cast slow & haste & prayer -> I never managed to cast a second FF before AI got the initiative. It might work if I brought the cape of velocity (found out about it only after Lord Draxinosum ARGH), but even with it there would be a serious problem: Dispel FF crashes SoD!

However, I finally came up with a dead sure strategy to finish the 3 rampart heroes without any losses and with one single mana filling:

Only bring your ADs and exactly 4 single Archmages. Wait and get blinded. AI will rush towards your mages, leaving one stack at the end of the round. The lower right corner of the combat field should be free now. Teleport your ADs there (no cure!). Second round: Goldies will kill last mage, Silver Pegasi will wake up ADs. Now don't attack, but blind Pegasi. Your are now completely protected for some 70 rounds by the enemy tent and the Pegasi. Get blinded (twice, since there are Elves or SSs also). Go smoke a cigarette. When you're done, the AI will have filled up the battlefield with tons of elementals and magic mirrors. And the Pegasi (or Elves) will awake first, attacking your ADs. Blind them, and spend the next hundred rounds with Hit & Run (don't forget Haste if you haven't got the Cape yet .

7. Lord Drax*****
Tricky one. I suggest there should be a hint telling the player that he knows no "dispell" spell. I made the assumption for my first try cause I thought otherwise there would be no hope to win.

Are you referring to Force Field? Well, as I mentioned the game will crash anyway. Don't know if this is a feature of the sd31to32.exe patch.

Quote:

Here is one way I used to win the battle without - double mana (I was forced into this battle to avoid month of plague and I had no time for double-mana).

At least on my installation (sd31to32.exe), there is NO WAY to prevent month of plague. Which btw was a real pain during the Wizard Wars: Month 6,7 and 8 were plagued. Sneaking in brought me no more than 66 Titans, while AI obviously recruited everything else (in the other 3 castles) before the first month of plague. Another "feature" of the patch: Hill Fortresses don't save you a single coin except for lvl.1 creatures.

Quote:

Troops: Titans, ADs, silver Pegasi, master genies, archmages, rust dragons, folder to be sacrificed (best: gremlins) and armo cart.

Round #1: RD blocks gate, cast force field to protect titans and ADs, ADs wait. Archmages are placed right in front of the catapult so it will be destroyed. Master genies cast spell on AD. Most likely AI will cast Shield and finish your mages and fodders. Attack sharpshooters. If you can't finish then clone ADs next round. AI usually won't blind AD in round #2 cause your AD jump right behind the force field (already moved), instead, he may cast air shield. From then on, watch for the speed difference for your Titans (ADs will be blinded quite soon) and AI's dragons. Try to cast haste and bless to your ADs before casting anti-magic. After that, abandon Titans(you can bring them back by sacrificing the fodders, no need for fodders if you visited the magic-spring) and cast Force field to COMPLETELY protect ADs. Hold on till AI runs out of mana. Kill all goldies and rusties. Bring back titans and archmages. Since the gate is blocked, feel free to walk up and shoot!

Ammo cart is important because for several rounds your titans are surrounded by the blinded ADs and the cart, so the AI will not teleport creatures to attack you (AI won't attack a blinded stack if there is another choice: ammo cart) and it is unlikely to cast slow since your titans can't move (at least I think this is the reason). So with haste you may have time to cast bless on your ADs.

And again, my battle was much more painful:
I brought the same army, and the first rounds went similar. But the FF tactic didn't work long enough. AI DOES cast slow and prayer after a couple of "lucky" rounds ((AI)Blind AD -> Cure -> FF -> (AI)Shield etc.) Which is deadly, and would have been even deadly with the Cape of Velocity due to the Dispel FF-Crash you have to avoid.
Nonetheless, with some luck it was possible to keep about half of the ADs and some Titans alive until Goldies and RDs were killed.
But then the real pain began: AI starts to cast Teleport! Casting dispel helps as AI is more likely to cast shield, prayer etc., but doesn't avoid it completely. And after the first teleport, all other troops will follow soon. Worse: AI keeps casting slow & blind, so that it was rather by luck that at one point AI resorted to resurrecting Crystal Dragons until running out of mana and I had enough time to get my Force Field running again. By that point I had no more than 20 ADs on the battlefield, Draxinosum still had some 50 Crystals and 1.5k War Unicorns.

Well, the rest was pretty staightforward. I began this battle with 1700 mana, ended it with 121 mana, and was forced to sacrifice my mages and genies (some 500 each) to resurrect the Titans.

Lord Draxinosum fell on Month 10, Week 3, Day 1.

Titanic Pride

Titanic Pride is a quite interesting map.  It's not DEEPLY story based, but it's got the basics.  However, it's no joke.  The expert player will most likely take it apart, but not quickly.

The new player shouldn't bother.

I don't know precisely why this one resonated so much with me.  Maybe because of the way it starts.  You must know what you are doing to survive until week 2.  It's got that "epic feel" that is missing in most user created maps.

Also, for a medium difficulty map (imo) with a serious surprise - try the old "THUNK" for Heroes 2.  I had stacks of 50 titans, etc and faced off with thunk when he had less than 12 of each.  He wiped me out.
