Quote: It's a pleasure to notice that I am not the only one still playing homm3 XL SP maps!
Last week I stumbled across a relatively new map on AW, not yet mentioned in this thread: "The Gholam"
I would rate it one of the top 5 maps ever, close to Lord of War and kill4pwr! It feels much more realistic than for example EmpWorldI/II, and doesn't get as tedious or even boring in the second half - perhaps due to the large oceans and the consistent, well driven storyline.
Another incredible feature of The Gholam is the uneqalled useage of the 5 travelling spells (TP,DD,WW, SummonBoat, Fly). They ALL become available at certain points, and they ALL are needed to access new areas - while perfectly embedded into the storyline.
(EDIT: TownPortal is actually *not really* needed to access new areas )
The difficulty of the map is not overwhelming, some battles are indeed too easy IMO. The final battle however is a blast, it took me over a dozend serious tries to win against the 1k killer dragons commanded by an all-99-guy without the orb of vulnerability...
I started this map last week after reading your post.(I'm new here) I totally agree on how good the map is but have a question for you. How did you beat the Gholam?
Berzerk fails against the Azure Dragons most of the time and my month 6 army got hammered repeatedly. I think I have all of the power ups(A53,D67,P61,K69) but the Gholams 99 stats are causing trades of over 100-1 between the AD and my (348)FDs. So how did you do it?
I realize how old this post is, but if there are other people out there like me who are still using this thread for the goldmine it is, then I'm going to answer this. Really, I'm just excited, because I think it may have been the trickiest fight I've come across.
My stats were about the same as yours...a little less maybe. I was at the end of the 6th month. You have to bring Phoenix with you. And you have to have all of the speed artifacts equipped. (Both rings, the cape and the necklace) My original idea was to force field off my titans and an ammo cart and be done with it. With the artifacts equipped you can haste your Titans and be faster than the dragons. No good though, because of the Azure's fear effect. I was never able to make it through the whole fight without freezing and dying. It's especially hard because he resurrects his azures after every hit, which makes for a long fight.
Next I tried putting some Phoenix in the force field with the Titans. This works, because it's very rare that you'll get back to back fear. Unfortunately, because of all the resurrecting, I ran out of shots long before I could finish the fight. I was about to give up when I figured out a solution. I split my Titans into two stacks up at the top with my ammo cart, and filled the rest of my army with stacks of Phoenix. When the fight starts, I go first and cast force field. This will protect the top Titan and the ammo cart. I still need to get my Titan behind the force field though, and they are not fast enough yet, without haste, to move before the dragons. Cue the Phoenix. I stacked up all the birds underneath the Titans and force field. Thanks to their resurrection ability, the dragons weren't able to get to my Titans on the first turn. After they killed almost all my Phoenix, I moved my other Titan behind the force field, giving me two stacks of Titans and an Ammo Cart. I still had to try this a couple of times, because back to back fear does happen, but pretty quickly I was able to kill their Azures.
You need a ton of magic, because he'll just keep on resurrecting until he's out of mana. This is actually a bonus though, because he won't cast any offensive spells, so I didn't even have to cast anti-magic.
The Gholam was a really fun map. As someone else said, the travel spells are all used to unique effect, and it has a pretty fast pace. It's never really too hard, until the end when the final battle is ridiculous.
I wonder if anyone will actually read this 13 years later, but if you do...thanks! I've recently gotten back into this game and discovered all these amazing custom maps. It's been a blast and this thread has been invaluable, especially for Bloodthirsty and Vengeance, which I got crushed on my first time through, but got the help I needed to beat it here. I'll keep checking back to see if anything new pops up. Cheers.

For such maps, you should use the editor when in trouble. Those are among hardest maps, so you must be comfortable with hidden paths, using "V" key to spot hidden resources or artefacts blocking the path, see what spells AI has then bring the correct army etc.
I don't think that good/complex maps can be played blind, sometimes they even require intensive studying into the editor.

I've been recently playing Sander's Folly. This is a marvelous map, with intriguing concepts and sophiscated stories, defininitely my favorite Heroes 3 map of all time. I do have a concern though. There's a secret cavern next to the Monolith One Way Entrance that leads to Ma'Goon at the start of the game. There's a small area in the cavern at a short distance away from the edge of the river where you can find a boat. In that area, there's a sign that reads "Sander's Folly. Version 1.21beta" This is unusual, given that all the other signs on the map are all written with story-related contents. I suspect that particular text was meant to be a placeholder that was about to replaced by something else at some point of the making of the map.
