I guess most of us had looming suspicions about it for quite some time and so this doesn't come as an earth-shattering surprise, but I could obviously never be certain about it, so I remained silent and gave him the benefit of the doubt. Oh well.

Whoever he is, although he may not have cancer, I think it's clear that he is ill in other ways. Best of luck to him.

This can't be truth... I refuse believing it... I suffered so much and now I just can't believe it... How can people be that sick...

I didn't want to believe it when Acu told me his suspicions as you have to be really sick to make something like that up. After going through some of the stuff Duke had posted I could see he was using imformation I had given him regarding what my husband went through, reliving that was hard and then to find it was some sick joke.

Well Evinin, babe, I am strong proponent of the belief that there is a lesson to be learned in virtually any situation. Whether or not an experience is good or bad is highly dependent on how you react to it.

The lesson to be learned in this one is that the next time I sexually harass you, and do not dare doubt for a second that there will be a next time, you can always look back to this little incident with Duke/Mentat and remember that there are far darker people in the world than I. You could almost say that I'm one of the good guys.

Look;

I find this as bothersome as anyone else, but eventhough I clearly disapprove with D_F's entire spiel (and fact to the matter, he did have excellent BG taste (Viconia <3)), I can to a degree understand what he did.

Obviously, not the entire cancer lie, but the reason behind it. Needless to say, I think we all know what Duke wanted. He wanted attention. He wanted sympathy. Likely, when he made the thread, I'm assuming he felt really miserable deep down.

He all reach a point where we feel terrible and lonely, and all we crave for is the care and sympathy of others. And don't pretend you don't know those emotions. Everyone is depressed once in their lifetime. We all know the feeling. We all were there.

I can only guesstimate what Duke exactly thought when he made the thread, but whatever the reason, it created sympathy, it created positive attention, which is likely what he craved for most at the given time. Seeing most of his posts on this board, I do not think he was 100% trolling with us, or doing this for fun. Then again, I barely knew him, so that is a question someone like Meroe or Tzar-Ivor (or anyone closer to Duke) could answer better.

In any case, desperately craving for sympathy, while pathetic in every meaning of the word, is a sign of severe depression and loneliness. Like I said, I'm certain we've all have felt similar emotions at least once in our life, and needless to say, those moments aren't pleasant. At all.

I think that, to a degree, we can empathise with Duke Falcon. Yes, what he did was foul and inadvertantly, and I will not deny it. Yet we shouldn't just reprimand him. What he really should get, is our pity. Pity because he was unable to find happiness and sympathy in conventional ways, and having to resort to an utterly unpalatable surrogate: His topic.

Depression manifests itself if many various ways, differing from one person to the other. I myself spend an entire year in depression, and as a result I became extremely anti-social, grumpy, cynical, haughy and downright insufferable. Luckily, I barely posted at HC during that time, if at all. To you, depression may show itself differently, and with Duke Falcon it came with an extreme, egocentric attempt at attention-harloting.

It is difficult to get out of that loop, and if you don't get your act together, you'll be forever lost. (Hence why many people on the internet are such weirdos.). I got out of my depression by shifting attention to my passions, which cleared part of the dysfunction in my head (there's always a bit of chaos, but he's that is me, after all),  so I could work my way out of my depression. I feel a lot better now. Still not quite as happy-go-lucky, but better

Duke did something clearly what he saw as an escape route our of the disorder that reigned surpreme in his head. I think his insecurities were so paramount, he had developed this unstoppable urge to make himself well-liked. There's no word other than "pathetic" to describe it. A pity, because I do think he *has* talents that could be of great use to him, but within his own life as within Heroes Community.

I would wish him strength to win the combat against his inner demons. He'll need it.

In the end, Duke *does* deserve pity. Not because of a life-threatening disease and the chronic pain it brings to whoever suffering for it.... but with the fact he led his inner demons lead him into a desperate, sickening spiel of lies, callousness and cynicism, which threw people who *genuinely* liked him for a loop.

And of course, the fact he has to live with himself, in a chronic state of unhappiness and watered-down surrogates for the bliss he once truly knew in his life.

Obviously, he could have done this all because he was a troll all along and just enjoys seeing us get upset over his intricately spin web of lies. While a lot viler, the content of this post still applies. Pity he wanted, pity he deserves and I can only hope, for *HIS* sake he is able to (find someone to) drag him(self) out of the bottomless pit he has thrown himself into.

Yea Lexxan, I am sure he was lonely & depressed.
Many people are. He is not the only person with problems.
We all got problems in out real life.

That is the wrong way to get attention.
There are other ways to get attention.
People liked him, he did not have to do all that.

I am not defending him, I dont care how depressed he is.
I seen & been through depression as bad as the next person & i would never dream of thinking that.

That is a BS excuse Lexxan.
He was wrong, even though I understand why he did it.
It does not matter.
What matters is he made it worst & now he has a reputation.

All in all, at least some people know how sick others can be.

Of course not.

@Bboy - believe me, I have changed a lot since then. Sexual harassing isn't something impressing to me now, so I don't mind.

There are different types of people and I'm trying to understand all of them. A friend of mines says that before you judge someone you have to know what pains him.

@Lexxan - your post made me think a lot about the reasons of making such a lie. You are right - people who are like this deserve pity. Not only, but mostly.

@Aculias - you are also right in your statement.

Aculias: You are 100%. I'm not trying to make excuses for Duke (although, by stating this, i actually AM making excuses but w/e). It simply isn't black of white. It's always grey. Always.

Look, I'm not going to say I can fully empathise with you, Selcy or Duke. I fortunately never had to come across a life-threatening disease and fortunately, I've never grown to be so inwardly self-absorbed to lose my sense of empathy with those that suffer on a daily basis. But I do believe all sides of the stories need to be contemplated. For the truth is never as simple as "he deserves pity" or "he's despicable". What he did was inexcusable and insensitive.

I do not believe it was his intention, but that doesn't excuse the actions he undertook. I may be gruff and blunt, and at times very callous and pedantic, and most of the times guillible and naive, but I do genuinely believe people don't have evil intentions initially. While it is offensive to cancer-survivors and their inner circle of friends and family (and I think you and Selcy have the full right to be furious about the entire matter, apology from Duke or not), it was a signal of his inner desperation to get whatever status he was/is into.

Whether he realizes it, or not, but it was a signal he WANTS to get out of his depression. It failed, likely because once you commence a great lie, it is hard to stop lying. And because sometimes, it is easier to accept a lie than to embrace the truth.

All I can advise is not to take matters too personally. It'll only lead to hardship and mental suffering, which will lead us NOWHERE.

Besides, the entire matter isn't about you, or Selcy. It was about Duke, it always was... and I see no reason to expand the problem to encompass the pair of you. It'll lead nowhere, honestly.

It's possible, but I doubt it. I think he decided to do this to troll HC, and he cackled madly the whole time. I don't think he wanted to receive sympathy, he wanted people to give it to something false and be fooled. Maybe he's quite happy in his everyday life and simply doesn't take "online life" as seriously as the rest of us. It was a source of amusement for him.

Believe me I understand only too well lex. I seen & been through the depression as well.
As bad as the next. it is never easy, but that is never the way.

I think he simply wanted more attention & he was telling the truth that he was alone.
It is painful to be alone, i been there too & it clouds your judgement.
He just came about it the wrong way.

well, I didn't follow the story at all. I had read the beginning of it and decided to ignore it completely because I didn't want to be emotionnally involved.
I hardly knew duke/mentat, I only remember answering to mentat in the thread about license for parenting because I thought what she said was especially scary and it made me think about how a psychopath could possibly think.

it was a sick joke, and to keep it going for 6 months, you must have a serious problem. reading what selcy wrote makes me think that the only impression I had from mentat might be the right one.
