And one more thing - few days ago I played HoMM3 RoE (original) and guess what? Even without expansions I played it by hours, just "one more turn". Same with Might and Magic 7. I didn't have these feelings while I played Heroes 5 and 6 or Might and Magic X - there wasn't factor which could hold me up at screen per hours.

I recently picked up Heroes 5 again and I'll tell you, I certainly do have these feelings you describe.

@NamelessOrder: Yea I agree with that. I can also relate to this. To me Heroes today is a game I mostly play on weekends for a few hours, then continue next week. Sometimes single player, but most of the times with my brother or friend who also plays it via LAN. I remember one game in H5, we were 3 people and played a session on largest map (I think it was Heritage), that took us almost two months to finish (and sim turns were available)

But that's what Heroes games are to me about. Yes, I do play online multiplayer sometimes, but I always shy from long games. I wanna get a session over in maximum of 2 hours. Any more than that is too much imo. I like smallest maps where a game may take one hour or less. That's why imo sim turns are important.

But imo sim turns are a must. Before it was introduced, it was realy troublesome for 3 - 4 players. The waiting times are ridiculous. I realy hope that it would be a feature from launch.

@Zombi_Wizzard: I play with my friends on the permanent sim turns patch, by Deflaktor.

It's quite fun.

Personally, I'm not much interested in H3, but as far as I know, H3HD seems like a good investment - not only it has clearer graphics, one of the major reasons to buy it should be the multiplayer tools. If I recall correctly, H3 servers are down, while H3HD uses Steam multiplayer, right?

no expansions and there are ways to get multiplayer work in h3 as it is (i've use Garena) not to mention gog.com has the the gold edition for cheaper than the hd re-release. so i can't say it is a good investment.

it's up to you though, but i would recommend gog gold edition instead. more content for cheaper.

I second that. I personaly have the original from 1999 as well as Armagedon's blade, but I ended up buying complete version from GoG later anyway, since I didn't have Shadow of Death before. I think for 10 EUR it's totaly worth it. You can even download HD mod (I think you still can).

H3HD isn't worth it imo. Maybe someday they will include both expansions as well as some popular mods like WoG or at least couple of custom maps and full mod support for 10-15 EUR. Then, it would be worth it. Unless ofc your main goal is to play it on iPhone or tablet ... H3HD prety much covers that.

now we have these connections (even if they are easter eggs)
To be honest, at the start I liked Sandro, until I learned that the original universe is the world he longs for.
I mean... why? Wouldn't it be more interesting to have just Ashan in this universe and to have Sandro seek to create a new world, instead of a "well, we can travel trough space now" being the only result of his labors?

This honestly broke the way I perceive his then-interesting character for me. Now I just attempt to ignore it, hoping I can enjoy his quest once more. Because really, before I learned of that, I actually kinda rooted for him, especially since I never liked Mother Namtaru...

Not to mention you can play ERA and/or HotA with the GoG version! (even more content )

H3HD looks as a good investment for tablets only.

There is ExaGear that allows android users to play HoMM3 on their devices. I think they also plan to support Mac. With this, HoMM3 from GoG is much better option.

I've watched that already. A rather sad perspective to say the least.

Give people extreme modding tools and be done with it. *winks*

It is sad because its true. Look at this forum... Galaad asking for old Heroes 3 "feel", Verriker lamenting for Enroth, Stevie wants his old skeletal Liches back, entire modding community stuck in H3... Most of this "concerned" fans just want old stuff back.

Eureka.

Yes, I wholeheartedly admit that I want the old stuff back. Very much so. Why is that bad again? Because it halts what you perceive as "progress"? "Advancement"? "Innovation"?

How should I put it. There are two types of innovation, one where you build upon and add and one where you destroy and replace. Heroes 1, 2, 3 and 5 were part of the former category, Heroes 4 and 6 were part of the latter. Avonu put it very well in his post above, let me quote her:

Avonu said:
That's true H3 was upgraded H2 (even engine was taken from H2) and H2 was upgraded H1 but... these game were evolution of previous ones. H2 wasn't just new graphics - it added 2 new factions, changed spells mechanics, chnged faction skills to what we knows as skills in Heroes  series now and the most important, introduced upgradeable creatures and artifact sets.
In core it was H1 game but it added so much small features, that it becomes something greater then H1. The same case was with H3.
Now, Heroes 4 and 6 tried (and failed) to be revolutionary games. While some concepts were great, others were not or they were poorly executed. But what it seems to be the greatest sin of these games are they forget to keep main elements of previous Heroes in game (like heroes enforcing armies with their stats and skills or spells being learn by magic guilds).
Heroes 5 is another case because it was Heroes 3 in core but didn't added nearly anything new to formula. Oh, there was a skillwill but it was poorly executed (who rememebers that originally we had 4 abilities available to fill per skill?) with flawly RNG.

Bottom line, you don't go around scrapping magic guilds and resources, or doing other mindboggling atrocities, and brand it "innovation". You build upon, you add towers to a castle, not destroy the castle to build another one and lose all your progress up until that point. NWC suffered this with Heroes 4, Ubisoft had to feel it on their own skins themselves to be able to learn, and so they did with Heroes 6. Now they learned (or so they extensively advertised) and are try to do a "best of Heroes" to get back to the foundations, to what worked, then build upon that. In this way you keep the old stuff and innovate by adding new features, rather than reinvent the wheel. That never works.

I'm mostly disappointed that they're remaking Vampires and Liches rather than Vampires and Lamasus - Liches weren't all that bad, to be honest.

I'm ok with lamasu. In my point of view, the only unit that looks like an undead - so far. Vampires bothered me very much; however, today, I'm completely neutral about anything, specially after seeing N. Might Heroes. I presumed: that's that and settled the thought to keep my mind at ease.

The worst it can happen is, perhaps, playing the game blindfolded - as long as it is fun.
