Chesko gives his side of the story on pulling his mods off the workshop

That brings up another interesting facet. Because a lot of those graphical programs (I know of Photoshop at the very least) make specific license types for people who will use those programs to make money vs. buying them to learn to use it or edit home photos or something. A corporate license vs. a student license for example. Now, they're unlikely to care much if you cracked CS5 or whatever for personal use or for something you're giving out for free. But if you're making actual real money with their product when they aren't getting a cut...this is going to be messy.

This is an interesting development and I agree with OD, it will be interesting to see where it goes.

I very rarely download or use mods, so this doesn't really directly affect me. However, indirectly I don't really like it. I see it as another step toward the direction gaming companies are taking toward squeezing every dime they can from an ever diminishing core experience. First they had expansion packs. Fine. They were substantial so I didn't mind paying the extra money. Then they introduced DLCs. Mini-expansion packs that often felt like things that should have been in the core game, as though the developers had a core game, then sliced off bits and pieces they could sell you for extra. No thanks. Then they started doing the free-2-play model. Horrid. Obviously gaming companies recognize that modding adds quite a bit onto the lifetime of a computer game, but they weren't reaping anything directly from it. It's a no brainer from the game company's point of view.

Although I'm not a modder per se, I view mapmaking as a kind of modding. I don't know how I would have felt about this back in my prime mapmaking days. I never did it for money, and it just complicates something that was supposed to be a hobby. Making mods payable may also not be attractive to some modders because it will probably limit distribution. Will it result in better mods? Doubtful. Mods seem pretty high quality without the financial incentive... because it hasn't in the past been why modders do this.

A mod, for those that aren't that into Skyrim modding,  is required by pretty much any mod that has customizable options due to its "mod configuration menu". It's in every modded Skyrim player's loadorder.

Well, after all this I think I'll just skip buying Skyrim altogether. Had it on my wishlist and the 75% discount was tempting, but the paid mods part was a real turn off.

In all likeliness this is a test for paid-only-mods for Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 4

Which, yknow, with paywalled mods, will just be giant flaccid flops

It's not in mine. (And for the record, it wasn't before this fiasco either. I just don't like using mods that need other mods to work. Guess I'm just not a die-hard mod user. )

That is probably one of their goals. They're testing it with Skyrim because it IS old, so most of the people willing to buy it have already done so.

I'm like that too. XD Of course now it's going to be harder to find tutorials, because people aren't going to want to help their competition, and I can't run ideas past anyone without risking them stealing it for money...

I guess one way to look at it is to close up to maximize profit..

But weren't you modding in the first place due to other reasons than money and won't money then just be a potential added bonus, like a kind of 'thank you for your hard work, effort and time'?

Beside, I think it'll be easier to get profit by having more knowledge, hence it'd make more sense for everyone to still share their ideas, so that everyone has an easier time creating what they are aiming for.
