I've seen Florence Foster Jenkins. (She's a real person, just listen to her sing on Youtube.) And it started out real funny, I was thinking like, "well, this is the most original comedy I've seen since the first Hangover movie." So, it keeps you interested right from the start as a fun film with good actors and high production values (1940's New York). But then, it develops into something else, you start to really care for the main character and that's something really hard to achieve, since she is this rich lady who rents Carniege Hall to sing although she has a terrible voice. But the more we learn about her life and get to know her, the more we start to see a tragic figure, an idealist dreamer instead of a spoiled egomaniac. There is a slight formulaic Hollywood flavor over how everything's solved out but not on an irritative level, I recommend this to anyone who wants something other than the usual cliches for a night.

Watched Moana. The graphics were amazingly well done(makes me want to dive back into making islands in h3 maps). The story was enjoyable as well.

So, I watched Louis Ferdinand Celine, incredible biopic, it focuses on the post-war times, the times he spent time with Milton Hindus, who wrote his biography "the Crippled Giant." Hindus is actually the main character of the movie, not Celine. But he's the main character as in Ishmael in Moby Dick, and Celine is Captain Ahab. This was additionally interesting for me because I adore Journey to the End of the Night.

I finally got to see Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot continued doing well in the role after I liked her in Dawn of Justice. I also liked Chris Pine's Steve Trevor. The villain Ares was okay, though not the highlight of the film for me.
Though it was predictable at times, I think it's an above average comic book film and it certainly made me look forward to Justice League.
Also, I got to see Tarkovsky's adaptation of Solaris for the first time. Great, great movie.

watched the new beauty and the beast. it started out lame, got really good, and then finished lame.
ok, some rants/notes(spoiler alert):
1. the townspeople are sheer snow. why tf would anyone in the castle want them back, anyway? snow those snows.
2. anyone else amused at how disney allows flirtations with beastiality by making this story a movie not once, but twice? "and a bit... alarming..."
3. at least the beast was less gay when he became a man again at the end, unlike the cartoon. that part in the cartoon version is really, REALLY gay. and this isn't just coming from me, but from my niece, too. like, blindingly gay. gayer than if elton john and richard simmons had a baby. or if they both had a baby, and that baby grew up to have a baby with freddie mercury, even.
4. the gay guy towney(the one who ended up liking his dress) and the gay lefou was hilarious. i loved that disney added that.
5. disney really toned down the violence in this movie. wtf? why? the cartoon was more violent, ffs. snow you for that, disney. you flirt with beastiality, sexuality, gay themes(and let's not forget, the barely concealed adultry in the beginning of the movie, with the black guy singing to the woman, and then her husband pops up and the black dude exits pretty fast), and magic(otherwise known as WITCHCRAFT in the christian circles! deviltry! satanism! paganism!); but you can't even leave the original violence that was in the cartoon, intact? LAME.
6. emma watson. i'd put a spell on her with my wand any day.

Tarkovsky's Solaris is masterpiece, but that may be true for any other of his movies. Love that director.

Is there anybody that's seen the two different versions of Solaris that can compare the two?
I've seen the Clooney version, was kind of cool.

Clooney version is the US remake. Original is always better than remake.

I'm trying to think of a movie where the remake is better and I can't think of any. That topic almost deserves its own thread.
And yet, remakes pretty consistently make money, because a lot of people who liked the original go to see it, along with a new audience. We're voluntarily paying for an inferior product

Ocean's Eleven is better than the original Rat Pack version, I liked Invasion (of the Body Snatchers) with Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman better than the 1950's version, cant remember the 70's version, I was a kid when I watched it, also prefer the new Dawn of the Dead to the original, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is better than the 50's version with Brando and David Niven. Little Shop of Horrors, the 80's musical is better than the black and white version with young Jack Nicholson... Also there are many remakes which people are not aware that they are remakes, for instance, I haven't seen the original Scarface from the 1930's but I hardly imagine I'll like it better than the Al Pacino version and most people I know dont even realize it's a remake.

I'm not sure if film before the 1940s should count because it was so primitive in not just technology but also in art and technique.

Depends on what you mean by technique, there are genius people using what they have as equipment in very creative ways like Hitchcock or Chaplin. I am not bored at all when I watch 39 Steps, Modern Times, Gone with the Wind, M, Public Enemy, All Quiet on the Western Front... These all possess uncomparably more artistic value than, say, Iron Man 2. I think, what you claim can be considered for 1910's and early 1920's but after that, you have a pretty mature cinematic language, not overwhelmingly different than today's. Comedy and effect based sci-fi gets outdated real fast though.

Btw, speaking of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels made me want to watch this scene again, it is one of my favorite comedy scenes of all time. For those of you who haven't seen the movie; both Michael Caine and Steve Martin are professional swindlers who find themselves in a turf war, one of them has to leave the city. So, they decide to settle it with a bet, they pick a rich woman and the first one to take her money is the winner. Martin decides to pose as a soldier who got handicapped and is numb from the waist down, he's desperately looking for money to be operated by the famous miracle worker, Dr. Emil Schaffhausen. Caine then makes his move and checkmates by posing as the doctor himself. The way they both act within the act is just top notch:
