Think of Fortress with Expert Water/Earth for porting hydras, mass Prayer and Shield.

I've played yesterday with Fortress and had exactly this: Expert Water,Earth and Wisdom, lots of hydras and that spells in addition to Town portal and DD.
Was real fun

It really depends on the size of the map, whether you are playing against computers or humans, if its resource rich, etc.  Lots of factors.

But overall, I'd have to say the best towns is Necropolis, and Castle.  The worst being Fortress and Inferno.

Necropolis: Necromancy.  Nuff said?
Castle: Archangels, Marksman, Mullich.

Fortress: No good support buildings, limited Mage Guild, slow units.
Inferno: Demons.  WTF?  Only good units are Efreet Sultan, Pit Lord.  Devils arent that great imo.

This thread is a real "Die hard"

Its been said 100 times, but I shall give my input too.

Factions which take more skill to play but dont reward you for that extra skill are imbalanced and vice versa.

Imo,Inferno is such an example.Weak T1,worst T2,average T4,average T5 and so on.
I dont know wether if 3DO failed to fix them or something else.

Pilords should have been able to raise Demons from enemy stacks, devils hypnotizing enemies and so on...
Their stacks were picky, either bless them or cast fire or earth on enemy, else you would get owned...

Fortress has the same issues, albeit less conflicting than Inferno(Fireball hitting your own troops...).
Still, the problem with them is that their slow units only work good in the beginning. They simply had no late game jack to invest on.Hydra had no usable ability or what so ever+ the slow speed.

Other than that, their real flaw was vs necro...
(mass slow) and that their monarchs were screwed vs necro.

I want to make this shorter so...

I am curious whats your record against skilled players?

If you havent played a lot, go at Gameranger and offer high ranked WCL players to play against you with the "weak" fortress.

I have to admit that Conflux is VERY strong town. I am playing a map called "The Lone Knight" and the main hero needs only lizard warriors and phoenixes.

Believe me or not, but getting first move is and extremely huge bonus!! I won a battle agains rampart where I defeated about 400 gold dragons, 600 unicorns, 1200 dendroids, 1600 silver pegasusses, 1900 grand elves and 2000 battle dwarves with only 1600 lizard warriors and 280 phoenixes!! Even it was the toughest battle at the moment, I won the battle without losses!

That was a very tricky battle that I will share that with you guys if you want

Play this map with Necropolis, and you will see how strong Necro is on that map..

Fighting with 125,000 skeleton warriors is what I call a "main" power stack

Well that sounds very well.. I have not tried with necro on that map yet, maybe later In my opinion 125k skeletons is very a lot, the map would be very easy to complete with them I think..
I hope that I will not have any problems with my current armies right now, because they are not strong as those skeletons.. Anyway my biggest loss at the moment is about 300 lizard warriors and 30 efreet sultans only because of a cursed ground (=resurrection is not possible..)
I fear that I have sacrificed important artifacts (which are key to victory), because I do not have all pieces of angelic alliance etc. and I have not completed many tasks yet because have not find exact artifacts...

Well I assume Conflux is the strongest town, and kinda OP. Castle, Rampart and Dungeon come second. Tower needs those rich maps and Stronghold would better avoid these maps. Inferno and Fortress are not weak, they just take a skilled player with experience with those towns to be successful. Necro is also good ofcourse.

That is the definition of "weak".

If you need more skill with the fortress/inferno to beat the map and the enemy player, then those armies are obviously weaker than the others.

Of course you can do cool stuff with fortress/inferno, like use the no retaliation of hydras/devils to beat incredible large wandering stacks...
Of course mighty moos are cool and demon farming is powerful...
But the other castles are much stronger in straight forward combat, and your fancy stuff won't work against a human opponent.

---

Same goes for water/fire magic.
Of course you can do a lot of fancy stuff with those magic schools, but who needs fancy stuff if he can mass haste/slow and crush them all?
So they are weaker than the others, although you can do stuff with them that others can't.

Not slower, but harder to drive.

And this example doesn't fit to HOMM3.

Conflux is a Ferrari that's easy to drive, while inferno is a volvo without wheels.

It takes not much skill to kill 1 million golems with 1 devil and become level 100 week one. Every town has its + and -, however, undert certain circumstances, inferno can be deadly strong. Not to mention single custom maps, where force field is all you need.

I believe town comparison makes sense only under equal conditions, for example free-for-all / random maps. It's not suprising that one town can dominate the others if all dwelligs on the map are replaced with matching tier 7 buildings

The weakest town is Necropolis, because undeads have no muscles.

Seraphim makes great points.

Personally I don't really like accepting that the towns aren't totally balanced, a part of me wishes they were all the same, but I guess facts are facts.

Anyway heres my list: (conflux not included because I've hardly played with them)

1.Necropolis
2.Castle
3.Dungeon
4.Stronghold
5.Rampart
6.Fortress
7.Tower
8.Inferno

Not sure if I even agree with myself on the list, I often change my mind about things, but I think it's quite accurate, I have noticed might heroes have huge secondary skill advantages, so yeah.

i dont know about Conflux as i never play them much and i wuld rather die then play as necro i mean those those ghost dragons can easily be killed i like the dread knights but the rest poor in my opinion except wrights because of stealing spell points.

and how can Rampart be 8th with gold dragon grand elves and unicorns okay i admit that dwarves and dendroids are lame and when they reach the battle is already over by 5 turns but they pack a punch and the dendroids vine trapping ability along with the dwarves defence make them perfect for defending against a seige as well the make excellent bodyguards for the elves

and fortress mighty gorgans are really underrated with their deathly stare they can easily kill 6th and 7th lvl units. The dragon flies with their weakness and dispelling beneficial effects i admits gnolls and lizard warriors are bad as well as hydra but hydras can attack in adjacent angles and no retaliation and Wyern monarachs with their poison does a fair damage and basilisks with their turning to stone i like fortress

Castle king with those crossbowman with multiple shots and halberdiers are on of the strongest lvl 1 units and griffens unlimited retaliations and crusaders with their strength and Arch Angels resurrecting them nuff said

1)Rampart
2)Fortress
3)Castle
4)Dungeon
5)Tower
6)Stronghold
7)Inferno
8)Necro

Conflux not included as i have only played it once in which i lost 79 pixies after killing 30 pikemen and 9 living dead no offence to thoose who use Conflux
