Heroes 3 might have had the story (even though I disliked the old universe, it was just to unusual and weird from other fanatasies) but HoMM5 won far with the gameplay, graphics (even though they are a small factor) and sound (Sylvan, Haven etc).

Okay I copy-pasted zamfir's post, but instead of his ratings I'm going to write my ratings but I deleted final impression and added ranking instead. I'll choose any of these rankings:

Worst
Horrible
Disgusting
Bad
Poor

Neutral Rankings

Mediocre

Good Rankings

Okay

I don't know why so much think H4 is perfect

It's a good game, but not the best. Its music and graphics are beatiful, but the creature system (non-upgradable),kinda bad spell system and decent skill one.I find H5 and H3 the best, because they have (most importantly!) great strategic elements - because HoMM is a strategic game, even it is TBS

well we have our reasons.
Non-upgradable creature system,actually i love it.
It is much better to choose dwellings than upgrading....
Why bad the spell system?i see it perfect

Well for me H2 was something awesome and huge, since I liked H1 pretty much when it was released. H3 for me was upgraded and pumped up version of H2, but I still have best HoMM memories with it. So I voted 3.
H4 was pretty messy at first, and a step further from traditions. Once I got used to it, it was great, but still something didn't quite "clash". H5 was a step back to traditional HoMM and I like it very much. The H5 Gold is definately worth buying, I bought it with ~25€ here in Finland.

1st place: Heroes V
H5's TotE hero skillwheel system is brilliant - the best of all parts.
And 8 different factions give a lot versatility - this game doesn't get boring. I still play it now.

2nd place: Heroes III
My first heroes game. Couldn't stop playing it, nearly ruined my life . Why I love it?

my opinion

I've played every single on of them, but out of all of them, the only one that could really capture me, and cause me to play it for one full year (before getting tired of it ) was H5. I don't know why actually, but it completely ensared me, like no other game had done before. (except perhaps Baldur's Gate 2) Gameplaywise, it's also the most versatile of the five.

H3 I didn't really enjoy, but that's mostly because is SUCK at playing it (and that's an understatement, I still prefer Magic too Might). Still, it still has a really magical sphere around it that can easily cause me to play it for months. The fact that many still play H3 today, also says enough about the quality.

I liked H2 more than H3, because 1) I was better at it 2) I was so fairy-tale like.... MAGICAL (wow) 3) it was the first of the Series I've played. Good game, but sometimes really hard to manage the Gold business (especially as a Warlock)

I enjoyed playing H4 much... however, it's so unlike every other Heroes Game in the Heroes, that I could hardly call it heroes. It was good on it's own, but it is NOT a true Heroes game, and that is it's main flaw. Overall, still enjoyable (though the campaigns should be easier imo)

H1... well, why play H1 if you have H2? It's nostalgic, but that's about it. Love the Purple Dragons, Blue Trolls, Old Archers, Teal Hydras, Grey Minos, Female Gargs and Chicken-like Phoenices though.

How the H2 Warlock gold is hard to manage? Just for the few expensive creatures. With some gold-creating arties (I don't remember exactly their name) and map-exploring,conquering new towns it's easy to manage it then.Even that the H2 'Dungeon' still overpowered, and that's more about the creatures, even if I find the Titan more powerful the the Black Dragon

I played a lot with Warolocks, but also with knights.Necro seemed pretty underpowered for me,even with the Necromancy skill

The thing that makes warlock too overpowered is the Dungeon building. Without that in a poor map, absolutely warlock will be overwhelmed moreover the wizard.

With the exception of Heroes 5 I only ever played the games after the fact, so from that nostalgia-free perspective I'd say three is the best.  But I have a real fondness for two, probably because I like playing Necromancer and two's got the only Necromancer town that isn't a Bastion of Ultimate Darkness(tm) with the lightning and the iron and the blah.  Two's got more of a subtle buildup from dingy town to nightmare as you upgrade it, and that's just fun.
