More info!
Apparently the above error has something to do with the new week of meditation, double mana. Everytime I reach that, teh program eternally thinks and never moves to the next turn.

Hello, sfidanza, Curio
Hi, nice meet to you, i'm big fan of Might & Magic
I think idea about Cheats for any future patch at Heroes of Might & Magic V:
Maybe Cheats is worked at Single-player's Campaigns, or something,
is good idea? maybe recreate Cheats in Campaigns? or nogoing?
I love all Might & Magic games in world!
This Cheats is for Single-player's campaign ONLY! Am i right or wrong
Here's i say at my computer:
Geoff: (tried witre cheats at "`" key, but not worked)
Geoff: WHAT!? that not worked at Campaigns!? grrr... i'm gonna ask game designer!
Geoff: hupmh.... maybe new patch in future will recreate Cheats for Campaigns.

Hi all, sorry again...life has been...annoying, shall we say.
Taliesyn: I'm afraid we've misunderstood each other...no harm no foul, eh?
Udo: your config file looks correct. I don't know about your odd \par stuff...either Notepad or Wordpad will work when you R-click it and choose Open With, but you'll have to uncheck the "Always use the selected program to open this type of file."
But as you still have a problem, you're a unique case. Why a rich text format? This to me sounds like it's no longer a cfg or something. If you want, I could send you my own autoexec.cfg and see if that works, but all the settings will be mine until you change them back.
LindaG: there is no real need to back this file up, unless you're going to make some drastic changes. I personally haven't, but if erring on the safe side, do so, though it is only a few lines extra at the very end of the document. After editing, just Save, don't Save As.
Kas: I have yet to have a Week of Meditation with the patch, so I can't confirm this. However, it definitely sounds like a game problem rather than a cheat problem...
Geoffrey: the cheats should work already with campaigns now...as to future changes to the codes, that's up the developers! And yes, the cheats are only for single player use, but it's not restricted to campaigns--custom single player maps allow the cheats to work too, but all multiplayer use (INCLUDING hot seat!) is disallowed.
If your tilde key is not working to bring down the console (but you appropriately edited your autoexec.cfg), then you may have to change the key you use. If you do not have a tilde key, or the tilde key does not appear to function for you, you'll have to edit your input.cfg file, found in your game directory > profiles default_profile. Open input.cfg with Wordpad, and search for the term show_console. Further along the line, you will see '`'. Change the keystroke enclosed within the single quotes to another key you can use. Save and exit.
Hope that helps.

Udo: yes, saving as rtf (rich text format) is the problem. It should be a plain text file (.txt), and yes, the formatting should be removed: that's what crashes the game.
Avoid wordpad at all cost when working on the game files, you have nothing to gain. If you can, avoid Notepad as well, and prefer a real text editor. I personally use EditPad Lite (free), but there are others. And the first to suggest "Word" gets a blame!!

Thanks for your response. After thinking about it, you're most certainly right. It's a game issue most likely. I appreciate all you do for gamers. Thanks!

editing the file
i really suck at this for 1 so try and be patient
ive tried everything i can think of and that has been suggested here or in the guide and nothing works
number 1 problem: there is no line anywhere which is 'mainmenu'
number two problem: inserting that
// Startup
mainmenu
setvar dev_console_password = schwinge-des-todes
that someone suggested doesnt work
and number 3 problem: changing the showconsole thing doesnt work
ive got version 1.2, is there something thats changed in it that stops you using that way to get the console?
could someone please please please help me with it

Fred, stop at problem number 1.
If you don't see the "mainmenu" line, you're not on the right file. The rest can not work.
Which file are you trying to edit, and how?

I'm glad to see that the spike in 1.2 cheat problems has levelled off, as have my e-mail messages concerning similar inquiries (phew!).
I'd like to say at this moment until late next week, if anyone encounters something else, to please post here rather than contacting me directly--I won't be home, and won't have access to the game or game files to answer any of the more unique questions that others can possibly address. If you have more general problems that you think I may have a solution to that I can provide ASAP (as I can still check my e-mail regularly) that may have a wait time here on the boards, feel free to do so!

what about version 0.9???
Well, i don't have vresion 1.2, i have version 0.9 of the game. How, you ask? Simply: i don't have a graphic card supported for this game (mine is Geforce4 mx440 8x) so, in order to play this game, i had to find a modified .exe, which works by the way, to play the game. But the strange thing about it: my game was version 1.0, but after the modified .exe, it became version 0.9, and the cheats won't work.. Any idea?

It does not work
Hello everyone!
My first question is to Udo, as we seem to be in the same situation: has anyone sent you an autoexec.cfg file? Did it work?
First I've copy-pasted the line
setvar dev_console_password = schwinge-des-todes
in notepad, but it didn't work. Then I reloaded the original file and tried to make it with the text editor included in Total Commander - no effect either. I've tried to change the input.cfg file using the same method as well, because the ~ key on a hungarian keyboard is AltGr+1. I've version 1.2 of the original game (Hungarian version as you've probably already guessed).
Any help would be appreciatedt, as I don't want to replay mission 2 lev 3 and 4 because of a skill pont put to the wrong place, and now I'm missing one exp_lev to get Urgash's Call in Agrael's Decision.
Sorry for the long post (actually it's my first one here) and thx in advance!
