Wrong William.
This effect happens quite often and has nothing to do with that delirium (morph) thing. It happens mostly when I am in "normal" Barbarian shape. So it is either "terror" or "confusing". Not sure...

Neither, "attract" does not mean that the monsters will become attracted to your char it means  monsters will attack whoever you're attacking at the moment. Same with "confuse", except they will attack randomly.

When monsters horde back at you in numbers, its probably because the effects of "terror", which lasts about 20 seconds,  is wearing off and those who fled in fear will return to confront you.

In reply to you're questions:

1) me and Angelito met up via AUS channel first and then later played with Open Battle.net
You can also create a new character or account and play on US WEST server, which is the best imo.
US WEST or US EAST are both good, and yeah.
That is where basically all my friends come and play and alot of members from hc play there aswell, well not alot but most of them that play diablo 2 usually go on US WEST or EAST that I know of.

2) Closed battle.net is not where the hacked stuff is, Open Battle.net uses single player characters, and since you can hack single player characters, thats where the hacked stuff is found.

3) Cold Sorceress are good, but Sorceress mainly suck in Hell Mode at times, since everything is immune to something, thast can make it harder for Sorceress.
Fire Sorceress are alright aswell, but a bit weak at times.
Lightning Sorceress are pretty good aswell, although perhaps not as strong as Cold Sorceress in my opinion.

Barbarian is rather good, because it can handle 2 weapons at once, that is an added plus.
You can also have a similar thing to Zeal for Barbarians but it only works by hitting 2 creatures at once or whatever, it is called Double Swing, it works rather well actually.
Leap is an alright attack aswell, and so is Double Throw.
Barbarians are usually quite strong and quite fast aswell, so good if you wanna finish something quickly

Paladins, which I think are the best, because they are very strong.
Chargedins, Hammerdins, Tesladins or Smiters are pretty good (there may be another one which I am unaware of  or that might be all of them )
Hammerdins use Blessed Hammer as their main form of attack, and are rather strong in Hell Mode.
Chargedins use Charge and they are actually pretty strong in later levels.
Tesladins use Holy Shock and Zeal, and are actually pretty strong but bad thing about that is that in Hell some monsters are immune to Lightning and since Holy Shock is a Lightning attack, it wont affect the Lightning immune monsters, but Zeal is very strong.
Smiters use Smite, and usually attack with their shields, and since Smite can knock back enemies and deal some decent damage, they asre quite strong asswell.

In my opinion, you should choose Paladins, I may have missed some info about the other character classes, mainly because I use Paladin the most, but I think I may have given you some understanding as to how Sorceress and Barbarian work

4) Version 1.11 is the correct version and yes you are running the correct one.

Hey,

- Ok, cheers again, William.

- A few other questions I need answered ; Can I ( in patch 1.11 ) create rune stuff which is posted in/under 1.10 and original ?

- A few items has an aura attached to it like :

Beast, 5 Socket Axes/Scepters/Hammers, Ber + Tir + Um + Mal + Lum Level 9 Fanaticism Aura When Equipped
+40% Increased Attack Speed
+240-270% Enhanced Damage (varies)
20% Chance of Crushing Blow
25% Chance of Open Wounds
+3 To Werebear
+3 To Lycanthropy
Prevent Monster Heal
+25-40 To Strength (varies)
+10 To Energy
+2 To Mana After Each Kill
Level 13 Summon Grizzly (5 Charges)

Can I have another item equipped which also has an aura and hence get 2 active auras, or is it 1 aura at a time only ?

- Probably more to come in the future

P.S. @ Angelito, if you have any unwanted gear..I'd take 'em of your hands without blinking

To be honest, it's a bit boring for me to play open battle.net with my existing singelplayer character (barbarian lev 80).
First reason is, I want to finish the game in singleplayer hell mode with my Barbarian without any level-up help I got from online games. Currently I just finished Act 2 (Luth Golein) and will face Kurast when I got a bit time to spend.
I would like to play online teamplay with completely fresh characters and maybe use a character I've never used before (Assassin, Druid, Necromancer). That way, we could build a cool party which would fit well (fighter, sorcerer, range attacker for example...).
And I also don't like to play with hacked items or hacked characters. This is the same as playing Heroes3 with expert diplo day 1....

There's no limit as to how many active auras you can have at the same time, eg from items, mercs or party members, so you can actually end up with even more than 2.

None of the characters suck in hell mode, William.  That is, if you choose your skills and statpoints wisely, and give them the right gear.  It all depends on preferences, being realistic about the gear you possess (mainly the quality of it) when considering certain build choices, and most importantly play style.

When playing any kind of RPG like game, I find myself preferring to play the characters who work well in a party (bard/thief, cleric, rogue) or the ones who can wreck havoc from a distance (sorcerers, marksmen, assassins).  Translating this into Diablo 2 this means paladin, necromancer, sorceress, assassin and amazon are my favorite characters, more or less in that order.  Underneith some of the builds I have tried, and which ones were succesful:

Paladin:

Mixed:
------
For some reason but the fifth character I ever tried (out of 5 in the original D2 version), in the 1.03 version this mixed paladin was pretty good, even with lowby gear.  I can't remember if I ever finished nightmare or not, but in early nightmare he did pretty well.

Main of many chosen skills were conversion and thorns.  Where I generally stayed in the back, my converted allies did the killing for me, while their former friends quite amusingly butchered themselves on my allies because of the massive thorns damage.  Furthermore I used skills like cleansing, salvation, defiance and redemption to stay out of trouble myself.

This build would no longer be viable now, since they capped the chance to convert on conversion dramatically, as well as the duration.  Which leaves formerly converted allies with a deadly thorns aura.

Charger:
--------
After I had started playing on closed battlenet, I had discovered the subtle arts of dueling with my first two characters online, a sorceress, and an amazon.  By that time I had found some pretty decent gear and decided I wanted to create a dueling paladin.

This character had max resists in hell, about 60% damage reduction, and even in 4 or 5 player games he hardly ever died.  In duels, all but overpowered javazons and bowazons with insane poison damage could take him out.

Main skill in dueling was charge with vigor, running at least three times as fast as an arrow.  Just before the hit, I switched to fanatism, and killed any non melee character instantly in one blow.  If the opponent blocked, I switched to smite, stunned them, and finished off with zeal (and massive poison damage) or vengeance.  Zeal with fanatism, or vengeance with salvation or cleansing were also the skills I used most when fighting player versus monsters.

I converted this mid lvl 80's character to LOD later, but found him failing in duels against mosts types of assassins, bone necromancers, and new types of paladins and sorceresses.  At that point I wasted a number of skillpoints in conviction and fist of the heavens, in attempt to have an alternative dueling technique.  Because I didn't have enough skillpoints to spend, the attempt failed.  This still remained a good character to level up characters of friends because it was so damn reliable, versatile, and hardly ever died.

When I stopped playing completely in september 2004, this was the character I hated most to see go to waste.

Smiter:
-------
I have a new lvl 73 paladin, with rather decent gear (guillaume's face, griswold's heart or shaftstop, lightsabre, stormshield, nosferatu's vampire coil, goblin toe).  The main trouble seems to be resistances now, for I lack the mara's kaleidoscope, um runes, and other res boosting equipment I once had.  Also, I desperately need more crushing blow equipment because that's what this build is all about.

Main skill is smite with fanatism and as much increased attack speed gear as I could use without compromising my safety (IAS jewels and Shael rune), which ensures about 5 or 6 hits per second.  Damage is limited, but since the 60% or so crushing blow on each smite attack, this char took Hell Andariel down in just about 20 seconds.

Unless I find stuff to boost my crushing blow and resistances further though, the killing speed through large packs of monsters is very slow compared to how my sorceress is doing.

Necromancer:

Summoner:
---------
My very first D2 character was a necromancer.  With Diablo 1 in mind, this turned out as some sort of melee build.  Funny, looking back at it, but I had to stop playing around act 2 normal, maggot lair because I kept on dying.  The second necromancer I made was a mixed kind of summoner.

Main skill was revive, with a heavy focus on curses like iron maiden, life tap, attract and lower resists.  A descent fire golem always accompanied me, and later in the build I added skills from the poison and bone tree like poison nova, which worked quite well with the lower resists.  The reason this build was quite succesful was the legion of revives protecting me from harm, while I could make enemies bite the dust fast with poison nova.

This char got as far as early hell, where the increased hitpoints and physical resistance of monsters made the revives kill more slowly, and the poison damage from poison nova less significant.  I slowly became bored of this character, because of the slow killing speed, and didn't create a new necromancer until much later when necromancers got an enormous boost with the addition of synergies in LOD (version 1.10 or 1.11?)

Bonemancer:
-----------
A few months before I stopped playing in september 2004, after noticing how devastating necromancers had become in duels, I figured they wouldn't do bad in player versus monster as well.  I started creating a new necro, with dueling purposes in a later stage in mind.

I've rarely been excited so much by a newly tried build as with this one.  I maxed every skill possible that boosted bone spirit and bone spear and got over 4K damage with bone spirit.  Though normal was difficult, nightmare and hell offered only limited challenge and this build rocked.  Because I had focused this much on those two skills, the build was not balanced enough to be any good in duels.  Due to the uber gear I had for this necro, he was probably the best character I have ever had against monsters.  Most of them were already dead by the time they were emerging on the edges of the screen.

Jailkeeper bonemancer:
----------------------
I have posted this build at HC already, and it is the first char I made after I started playing again.  The intention was to make a character that could kill reasonable fast, with the least possible amount of trouble with enemy resistances and such, with no gear to start with - preferably equiping myself with any magic find items I could find.

This build is amazing.  Progress isn't exactly hasty, but this necromancer hardly ever dies since most enemies never get past the bone walls.  Bone spear and bone spirit serve as a means to create a few corpses before corpse explosion unleashes hell upon the rest of a pack of monsters.  Made me find lots of good items even while leveling (now lvl 86), and it's the only character I can imagine finishing the game quite easily, alone... without ever dying (in other words hardcore).

Sorceress:

Fire sorc:
----------
With the sorceror of Diablo 1 in mind, I began making a sorc focusing on fire in order to get to hydra as soon as I could.  Even though I wasted a lot of skillpoints, this build was still reasonably playable in nightmare.  By mid nightmare, I suppose it was in act 3, the fact I had been ignoring putting points in vitality, started to take its toll.  I tried to fix it using energy shield, but she never managed to finish nightmare.

Cold sorc:
----------
Probably my first online character was a cold sorc.  Having never really tried cold skills before, I was surprised to see the devastating damage of blizzard (before that patch that put a timer on recasting this skill, so you could fill an entire zone with boneshredding falling iceshards), and later the insane power of frozen orb.  With a descent level of cold mastery, these two skills even maintained their power throughout nightmare.

Early in nightmare already, I noticed cold immune monsters, and understood I needed to start investing into a second skill tree.  With LOD, adding more cold immunes, and after taking an interest in duelling, where thunderstorm was used to slay opponents just by teleporting besides them, I chose to max that skill... *sigh*  I don't know how many times this choice made me do 'Tom and Jerry' runs, waiting for my thunderstorm to finish off the mob chasing me, but it must have been thousands of times.

Still this char made it to high up in the level 70's, and stood her ground pretty well in duels

Cold and lightning sorc:
------------------------
This is the single most speed freak killing machine character I have ever built.  Brittle, because she's mainly equipped with magic find gear, but breathtakingly powerful.  I've done all but the ancients in hell alone (lvl 84 by now), and only monsters with high elemental damage attacks are really a threat.  For all others, there's teleport

If you want, I could post her full build.  Summarized, her main skills are frozen orb (with 8 points in cold mastery), lightning and chain lightning (with 20 points in lightning mastery).  Static field, teleport and frozen armor are supportive.

What makes this build so powerful?  Frozen orb, because of cold mastery's effect of lowering cold res, still kills most enemies in hell with 1 or 2 orbs.  On mobs, 2 or 3 orbs are usually enough to clear the screen.  Furthermore, with only 34 skillpoints needed in this tree, that leaves all other points to invest into another tree... yum yum

Because about a fifth of all monsters in hell is immune to cold, it's obligatory to choose a second tree.  Why did I choose lightning?  The fire tree requires more skillpoints spent before it becomes really succesful.  For me, being a bit lazy, and not wanting to do hours and hours of nightmare Baal runs, this already made the fire tree less interesting.  As an added plus, both lightning and chain lightning seem to have an effect that is comparable to stunning for a fraction of a second, and can be cast rapidly with faster cast rate.

Isn't the damage of lightning skills that much lower compared to the skills of the fire tree?  Yep, but it's much harder to target meteors, fire walls and even fire balls, than it is to target lightning, or even easier chain lightning.  Still, the damage of lightning is quite descent with maxed synergies.  And the fact that every so many times it hardly deals any damage is largely compensated by the fast cast rate.  Not to forget the amazing way chain lightning works.  4-2000 damage may not seem like much, but if you count in you can hit 9 targets with one chain lightning (the same targets multiple times if less than 9 monsters are hit), this means 36-18000 damage.  And this is with lowby gear  Just a few chain lightnings can, just like frozen orb does, kill off screens full of monsters in mere seconds...

An added bonus with this build is the fact that you don't have to aim well with both frozen orb as with chain lightning, and can quickly switch to teleport when things get too dicy.

There is one major flaw with this build though, super unique monsters of a type whose base resistance is cold or lightning, with an added resistance for the other elemental magic.  In the beginning I just parked them somewhere and teleported away, but this isn't always possible.  That's when I switched my barb mercenary (who tanked and looked silly mainly) for an act one fire arrow rogue.  She wields a lucky find rare bow with massive fire damage and some poison, and takes out most super uniques I can't kill in about half a minute to a minute.  Annoying, but hey, no build is perfect

Assasin:

Trapsin:
--------
Having played the high level melee assassin of my best friend a few times, I couldn't help getting a 'mortal combat' feeling of combos and lots of funny looking colorful orbs around her.  It's a very intensive playstyle that didn't suit me well, and I had already noticed how freakishly powerful assassins were in duels using traps, so I decided to make a trapsin.

Main skills were wake of fire, lightning sentry, death sentry and mind blast.  Burst of speed, weapon block and shadow master supportive.  She outright rocked throughout normal and nightmare, and in hell, after I had discovered the benefits of mind blast and death sentry, she pretty much rocked there too.  At this point I had uber gear for her, but even with lowby gear, I'm sure she would have done well.

For some reason, lightning sentry and wake of fire seem to stun enemies in place.  If those don't, mind blast will.  The damage of lightning sentry and wake of fire is enough to make some kills, and death sentry with its corpse explosion like nature, takes care of the rest.

In duels, she was mean as hell, and I added dragon flight later to taunt enemies or to take out spellcasters with the damage I had from half an inventory filled with poison charms

Amazon:

Bowazon:
--------
The third or fourth character I ever made was an amazon.  I didn't really understand where to take her at that time, and by mid act 2 (normal ) I had to give up because the build was a total mess.  Without uber gear, I guess investing points in both bow and crossbow skills, and also in javelin and spear skills, is not a viable option.

My second character online however, was a pure bred bowazon.  These were the days of the pierce bug, which made guided arrows strike the same monster up to 5 times.  As her equipment slowly became godly, I took this char up to lvl 90, and for a long time she was almost undefeatable in duels because of some 4K poison damage she dealt with every hit.  When they fixed the pierce bug, I invested some spare skillpoints in multi shot, which with the mana leech I had worked quite well against monsters.  In duels however, with the arrival of the assassin and the other new possible character builds, she wasn't quite as effective as before, and I stopped playing her after a while.

Mageazon:
---------
For some reason I've been finding a lot of good ama stuff with my new sorc and necro magic find chars, so if I decide to make a new character, it will probably be a new amazon.

I'm considering an amazon with high focus on freezing and immolation arrow, with a high firing speed, but haven't thought through the details yet.

Druid:

Werewolf druid:
---------------
When LOD came out, in the period when I had been playing online for a while, I wanted to try out the druid as well.  It was a nice experience, and the shapeshifting thing was fun, but he didn't quite make it past lvl 68 or 69.  Because of average equipment or some errors in skill point investment?  Maybe... but I've never really enjoyed a pure hack and slash style of playing and this build was pretty pathetic in hell.

I never considered building a summoning druid because of my experience with a summoning necro.  It would probably work, but would be o so slow and retarded to wait and see your minions do the killing for you...

My best friend once tried out an elemental druid that was kind of fun.  But he lacked good gear, and all spells are really hard to aim so you pretty much need summoned creatures to protect you, which limits the number of skill points you can invest to boost the synergies of your elemental skills.

All in all, I think druids are rather lame.  I mean, men wearing furry coats, moaning and hopping around all the time is just a bit out of place in an RPG, don't you think?

Barbarian:

'Thing' barbarian:
------------------
I never really loved the warrior in Diablo 1, so it wasn't until my third or fourth character that I tried out the barb.  He made it to lvl 40 or something, and I haven't made another barb since.

If hack and slash is what you want, hack and slash is what you get.  Playing barb was too boring for me, and even with my vivid imagination I couldn't figure out a build that would be fun to play for me, without needing uber gear at least.  Not to mention you need a pretty damn good weapon and gigantic amounts of life leech if you want to stand a chance in the higher difficulty settings.

For this reason, every mule character I have ever created is a barb.  That way they're still of some use to me

Well, that's all for now

Hey,

- Great post Nid !

- A few things though ( of course )
: A few months before I stopped playing in september 2004
: I have a new lvl 73 paladin

- Anywhoo...  I have just topped the "magic" 30 with my Bowazon and I need some gear.. to say the least. But She is doing ok in tandem with others ( read, all others ) but solo, she really is having a hard time.. I guess it will change when I get my Valkyrie upped a bit.

- With your info. on the assassin ( 4 s'ess ) I am about to make one.. I just think I will drop a few into SD too ( for when I get BORED.. with the go go go go go,I need lvl..more items, new run..c'mon.new new, fellas ) and want to actually play the game .

- EDIT : Usually it's best to Imbue at around Character Level 34-38. The reason for this is that at higher levels, more Magical Prefixes and Suffixes will be available which will improve the chance of you finding your most desired Magical Attributes. The Prefix/Suffix levels of Kings (35), Merciless (32), Slaughter (25), Leech (6), Bat (6), Alacrity (8), Archer (40). - That I dont get ?

Thanks

Well somewhere in april this year, I started playing again.  On saturday and sunday afternoons, I play a few hours if I have nothing else to do.  Don't have the opportunity or interest to do so every weekend, but since april I've created a lvl86 necromancer, a lvl 84 sorceress, and a lvl 73 paladin.

I'd love to make a new assassin too, but lack the gear to do so at the moment.  Shouldn't be too hard even with lowby gear throughout all of normal and nightmare though, hell could be tougher.

If you like, I have some spare amazon items on a mule, a kuko shakako, a witchwild string and a few other things.  I play on closed battlenet Europe, so if you're ever online, just check if I'm there and they're yours.  Handle's are Nidhgrin and Nidhgrin2 (lots of mules).

Valkyrie is a powerful tank, with an impressive life regeneration rate, who at higher levels succesfully prevents most enemies from reaching you, and takes a lot of ranged attacks instead of you.  Don't count on her for killing though, it's still you, or in fact your bow that should do the fighting...

I've got no clue as to what the imbue stuff means though

Cheers, Ivo

Got your IM Guz

My current online characters are all pretty low level guys. Just started some of them with William, while he already was level 80 or similar...so they leveled up to 10-18 or so. But that was boring. So if I join again, I will start with a new character.

@Nid
I am currently playing a Barbarian, and I think it is quite easy to get along in hell mode. He has most his points on doubleswing and frenzy for combat skills, and War Cry. His resistances are all maxed to 75, except poison (60), not only due to arties, but to level 5 Natural resistance.

Not sure what u don't understand about those pre- and suffixes though. The meaning in general?

Hey,

- Well I have read the Arreat Summit site and I still dont get it.. I would think, making/imbuing/socket items as late as possible would benefit the most ?

- @Nid - Done deal  ( I am on Europe non ladder )

- @Angelito - if you could specify it a bit more here ( read, link it), maybe an old n00b as me could understand it too

- I had the most amazing experience last night ( *sigh* - job and all) ; Went on a so called Baal run ( normal ) and I was lvl 23 when I joined in ( had been boosted by my RL friend ToH'er ,Kenzon ) and I went from lvl 23 to 37 in like 2 hours or so !! .. darn that went fast 6-8 players and it really rocks exp. wise.. lol. So now I am lvl 41 bowazon but as I wrote previously, without ANY gear mentionable, so I take whatever you have Nid/Angelito
3 socked stag bow with Tal rune, square emeral and a flawless saphire in it that should give you some idea as to how much my gear sucks atm.

- Going to read up on your trapsin,Nid and start one after .. do I go dual claws/katars or one of those with a shield ?
EDIT - What are the ( your previous ) approx stat build ? I have noticed that this build requires alot of mana ( traps/SM ) ?

- Enought ranting from here

Not to easy to explain in english, but I will try.

All arties u find have specific names.
A weapon for example could be named: Deadly axe of the Bull (just as an example)
"Deadly" would be the Prefix, while "Bull" would be the suffix. Every prefix and every suffix has its specific meaning and effect.
Deadly means "21%-30% increased damage" and will not appear before level 5.
Bull means "+6 - +9 to strength" and will not appear before level 37.

So the chance u will find a weapon which increases your strength by 8 will be much higher when u have reached level 37.

That's just a simple example to show ya how it works.

Items you can't use

I had a lvl 28 Bowazon and was taking on Mephisto in Act3.

Stupid lag plus freak super reach killed me in 2 hits before I could run or rejuv.  Had on the complete Arctic set which is pretty good.

Luckily same character I gave all my M'avinas set items to my mule.  Have all of that set now except the helm, M'avinas True sight.  Stupid thing is that for the bow and armor you have to be lvl 70, helm you can use at lvl64, belt at lvl45 and gloves at lvl 32.  But even though you can use the gloves at 32 your strength has to be 88.  That really seems wierd to me, I mean there just gloves.

Anyone else think they should give more synergy bonus's for the Amazon Bow skills?  Right now my Zon is back up to lvl 16 and have already put 10 points into Magic arrow.  Now I never have to waste space with arrows really.
