sorry for the double post but anyone else noticed we've gone off-topic loooooooooong time ago XD

so i decided to post some ON-topic for change

i was watching the Necropolis alternatives yesterday, has anyone else noticed btw that now that we look back and know what their abilities are, Necropolis alternatives actually make the faction ALOT stronger.

anyways, Necro lineup

Tier1: for creeping Skeleton Archers but for final battle i would go for Skeleton Warriors. Warriors have bigger impact in my opinion at last battle because of good melee attack for tier1 and large shield + magic proof.

Tier2: Disease Zombie definatly. Weakening Aura is much better IMO than Weakening Strike. also the morale reducing effect can be made to be really effective.

Tier3: Poltergeist. the ability is similar with Spectre(cept targets are shooters now) but the superior attack and defense along with INCREASED SPEED more than makes the decision clear for me.

Tier4: hard decision. increased HP and sleeping strike or no enemy retaliation. i guess it depends on how often sleeping strike works. i guess ill say Vampire Lord for now.

Tier5: Shooter or Melee unit with Raise dead. i think i might go for Lich Master since Archliches are so easy to block from shooting. and extra Raise Deads are never bad thing.

Tier6: if i go for Spectrals or need more damage, Wraiths. if i go for Horror Dragons, Banshees. -1 morale without other morale reducing effects is crap. but if other units help reducing morale along, it can become powerful.

Tier7: Horror Dragon all the way. Horror Dragons have 1 less DEF and 10 less HP than Spectrals. but these things were never tanks anyway. what however DOES make this unit far superior, is it's increased damage, attack and much better special. Basic Sorrow on their strike means -2 morale and luck for all units they hit. and everyone knows how morale and luck always makes and breaks battles. it's simply so much better than just casting weakness on a monster. Weakness will always get casted by hero anyway, with mass effect too.

has anyone noticed that Disease Zombie+Death Wail+Banshee Howl+ Expert Sorrow is -7 morale and -4 luck? that kind of amount makes even Haven get negative morale and pretty much removes all Luck bonuses from Sylvan. scary thought isn't it?

my Haven choosing is still on first page btw

Hehe, your right. This has turned into a Blood Angel topic.

Now on-topic. It's true that many op the new (and pink) upgrades may be better than the old ones, but if it's possible to reduce enemy morale by 7 and luck by 4 with only the new creatures and Banshee Howl I am beginning to wonder. Thats in fact much better than the necromancer's ultimate ability Howl of Terror which only decreases morale with 6. That seems waaaaay too overpowered, you would actually not bother to get the ultimate ability since you have some upgrades and a spell that every necromancer has. If this is true I feel realy sorry for Haven and the other factions (perhaps Haven really need Aura of Light now Deathy(kidding)).

Well, you should take into account that we have no reason to believe Sorrow will come as a mass spell - and we better pray it won't, because a level 1 spell to reduce Luck AND Morale by 4 for all units will just be a great joke. Thus, even though casting Sorrow on one crucial stack (*cough*Paladins*cough), in other cases Mass Slow or Mass Weakness might be a better pick.

indeed but just think how it will be if Necro uses first Mass Slow and then sorrow on all enemies key units. like in Haven's example, Paladins,Griffins and Angels.

also hero doesn't have to do all the sorrowing with Horror Dragons being there and banshee howl+death wail+zombies can put -3 morale on enemies by themselves already.

i don't know but Sorrow does sound little overpowered to me atleast when used by Necro.

Sorrow seems extremely powerful for a level 1 spell.. (hell it beats vulenerability for sure)

Overpowered is a strong word to use. Remember that the Hero will always have to use his turn, and sometimes you may ask yourself, which will be better, Sorrow or Puppet Master?

That being said, I agre that the spell seem very powerful for a level 1 spell. My biggest gripe is the fact that they took to perfectly fine separate spells - Sorrow and Misfortune - and made into one spell, which does not make much sense to me at all. Had they been separate spells, each would have been much less overblown, and we would even could have had mass effects without the thing being overpowered, which would have made them tremendously more useful. Now we're stuck with a single spell being so powerful that it cannot have mass effect, which ironically reduces its usefulness a lot, because there are few situations where you will rather affect one unit than many.

Also, there is a general tendency of level 1 Light and Dark Magic spells to be rather overblown. Mass Haste/Slow anyone?

from what i know, Light Magic does not have spell that would remove Sorrow and place a effect of it's own. so Cleansing is probably the only way even for Runemages.

well now that it is known that Death Wail apparently does not reduce any morale after all, Necros will only reduce 6 morale from enemies. so basically Sorrow is a good way to counter Leadership and Luck skills it is really painful skill for factions that have low chance for luck and leadership tho.

So again we end up with a creature that is in EVERY SITUATION better than the alternative. (Sharpshooters > Master Hunters  and now Horror Dragon > Spectral dragons... )

Not a good thing in my opinion.

By the way, that strategy of sending up front 5 blood angels with a single hero each casting Holy word won't do. That's sacrificing 5 blood angels to deal around 500 damage, which doesn't even kill 3 spectral dragons. It's too much of a waste.

I still say Arch Devils or Arch Demons should be given the Armageddon spell As a nasty last "goodbye" ticket when the army is falling. But perhaps a bit tweaked so it can only be used when the HERO has expert destructive magic or something, to avoid that killer 1-demon-up-front-casting-armageddon-and-wasting-some-of-your-army-and-repeat strategy. Also, some ability protecting demons from fire damage seems nice

Ok I'm dreaming and speculating too much again.

your thinking of it all wrong though moonlith. it might only kill 3 spectrals yeah. but it would kill wraiths liches archers and all the rest too.
if you look at it that way its the most powerful "suicide" unit out there because it doesnt even affect itself.

Yeah it will kill more, but I have a feeling you'd rather have those 5 extra blood angels in your main army and do some more damage on enemy stacks. If you repeat that strategy of sacrifising blood angels just like that, you'll end up with the enemy being SOMEWHAT weakened, while you've been busying yourself destroying tier 7 units JUST for that. And the Angels are quite an offensive unit that Haven can use really well, I rather keep them alive.

Just my personal preference really.

I like Haven. Been playing it alot lately.

I normally go:

Conscripts - Doesn't really matter, but they seem to kick in more damage

Crossbowmen - Obviously, they're better than Marksmen in every aspect

Squires - I've seen some comparison threads choose Vindicators over Squires but honestly, I feel their damage is only good against tiers equal or lower. Against tier 5-6, their cleave ability isn't useful. And by the time they rush into action, usually the shooters and Champions have already destroyed half the enemy =x

Battle Griffins - More hp

Zealots - Don't see why people would choose Inquisitors.

A mix of Paladins and Champions - Normally Champions to do the bulk of the damage, but need a few Paladins to protect the army from mind spells.

Last tier depends - usually Seraph angels, but on Klaus I prefer to use them to just resurrect the Champions
