((Dinner))

Fortunately, for once Mark wasn't completely socially awkward and was able to fill the silence with a follow up question! "Oh, cool. The elders are starting to talk with you a lot, huh? And who's Pellana?" AND SO THE DISCUSSION CONTINUES!

_________________________________________________________

((Pre-Wain))

The sight of his arm being dragged away did cause a jolt of concern to go through Mark, but he manages to keep from jumping up or sticking his arm out and making any sudden moves as his pokemon investigates the prosthetic. Once he was sure Chevlain wasn't about to eat it (or something to that effect), he goes on. "I lost my real arm the last time I was in this country. It... well, some t-terrible people hurt me enough that it was either that or dying by infection or shock. That limb lets me move and act as normal. It's the best that I can do to fix me... but I'm pretty sure it can't do much to help you." All of that said, he was still holding Chevlain's ball in one hand, ready to recall the dragon type in case she does decide to eat the arm.

Biting at his bottom lip, still a bit nervous even if he was managing to keep it mostly out of his voice, Mark gestures at Tattersail and says, "Um, if you have anything you want to say, or questions for me, ask my kirlia, Tattersail, here. We're connected, and she'll be able to translate."

________________________________________________________

((At the Wainening))

Mark scratches at the back of his head at that, saying, "Well, yeah. She's been shadowed pretty heavily, and she's a rather powerful pokemon, so I was hoping that you might be able to help out with a bit of the de-shadowing process. M-Maybe, um... in a s-safe and more private area."

________________________________________________________

((Matt))

Mark takes the items and holds out his hand to give Sengar pats on his head... if the fox-like dark type allows head pats. Regardless, he accepts the money and says, "Thanks! O-Oh, we managed to get that s-safe open, and Mina's got some... stuff for you. She said she'd be at the contest hall t-today, if you wanted to meet with her."

((We'll drop tackle for quick attack))

Mark and Mina (dinner):

"Oh, cool. The elders are starting to talk with you a lot, huh? And who's Pellana?"

“Yeah I guess,” Mina agreed, having not really thought about it that way. “Pellana used to be the Gym Leader for Ternai Town…” Mina had been about to add ‘before Bandra took it over’ but self-censored, she didn’t feel like she should bring that up right now. Instead she substituted, “…I gather she’s not much of a cook; the Elder mentioned having to clean charcoal out of one of the Blenders.”

----------------

Mark (without Ranger Wain):

Chevalin continues examining your prosthetic, mouthing it a little bit, but it’s clear after a moment she’s just trying to flip it over, which she manages with a little work. She’s still keeping an eye on you at all times.

"Um, if you have anything you want to say, or questions for me, ask my kirlia, Tattersail, here. We're connected, and she'll be able to translate."

That gets her attention, and earns Tattersail a wary look. Chevalin rumbles, her voice like rocks sliding over one another.

<She wants to know how it works.>

----------------

Mark (with Ranger Wain):

"Well, yeah. She's been shadowed pretty heavily, and she's a rather powerful pokemon, so I was hoping that you might be able to help out with a bit of the de-shadowing process. M-Maybe, um... in a s-safe and more private area."

“I have some things that might be able to help with that,” Wain agrees easily. “Where were you thinking of?”

----------------

Mark (training):

Sengar endures the head pats.

Mark, being in the middle of taking a sip of his shake, almost has his gulp come back up his nose at that comment. "Wait, what, really? A Gym l-leader?! You're going to be helping out a Gym Leader? Mina that is so cool!" A thought crosses his mind at that moment, and he says, "You know, I should probably start picking up badges on that subject. My team is getting pretty high level, and while I might not need to worry about too many of them being rebellious, I mean... Sengar showed that n-not all of them will just sit around and wait for me to give them commands before they decide to start pouncing on people I like. And Chevlain is, well, she's pretty strong, and I'm... not really sure I'll be able to control her all that well without a few badges under my belt. You know?"

_______________________________________

((Pre-Wain))

Still a bit wary himself, because the ice dragon literally has his arm there, Mark considers how to answer that question from, well, every standpoint he can come up with. "Well... let's see... it's Devon Corporation tech. Pretty sure that won't mean anything to you, but basically it's a replacement for a limb that was lost. Um... how does it work exactly... well, it has a bunch of circuits and wires that act like nerves and veins, motors and gears that act like muscles, rods running through the center that act like bones, and that plastic shell is basically skin? I mean... it's really just there to protect everything inside and to keep out dust and grime, so yeah, it's pretty much literally skin."

Tilting his head to the side to think of anything he'd missed, he adds, "It's, uh, battery powered, and those batteries can be charged by being plugged into the wall or by some small, built-in solar pannels. As for how I control it... see that rod sticking out of the shoulder joint?" Waiting until she'd found it, he would tilt his now-armless shoulder at her and show her the sprocket and ball bearings that the rod attached to and go on, "That slips in right here, and with the help of magnets and three clips, it keeps the arm locked in place. I-It also serves as a port or guiding rod to connect the circuits that are attached to my nervous system, allowing me to move it like my normal arm. If... you wanted, I could put it back on and show you how it works. Just... bring it back over here?"

And again, he's still ready to recall her at a moment's notice if it looks like Chevlain is going to go out of her way to try and break his way too expensive to replace limb.

((With Wain))

Clearing his throat, Mark says, "W-Well, there's a room in back Nurse Joy was letting us u-use for a bit, but I don't want to, y-you know, wreck the pokemon center. Um... maybe one of the training r-rooms in the contest hall? I helped protect that when Bandra... um... w-when... you know." Scratching at the back of his head extra nervously, he says, "Some of the people there m-might be willing to give us a room or help u-us out?"

((Matt))

Mark waves to you as you leave him to resume training along the side of the North Town Road. He also looks down at his new umbreon and asks, "What, you don't l-like pats? I thought e-every fluffy thing likes scritches and petting behind the ears! S-Sorry..."

“No I…don’t know,” Mina responded, honestly confused. “How are badges supposed to help with that?”

((Seriously, they don’t do that in this game. If you beat a Gym Leader (or a few other categories of tough opponents, like a Bandra Officer or a Legendary Pokémon) the Pokémon used get a stat boost. The Badges aren’t magic mind control chips; Pokémon might be vaguely aware that those bits of metal are supposed to indicate skill, but whether or not they care about that is going to be up to the Pokémon. The Badge itself is only really used for entrance in the Pokémon League, which isn’t really running ATM what with the League Champion being the Big Bad. ))

----------------

Mark (without Ranger Wain):

Chevalin sits, eyes you consideringly for a moment, then shoves your arm back over at you with her muzzle. She isn’t particularly careful with it, but she doesn’t seem to be trying to deliberately damage it either.

Mark (with Ranger Wain):

“Yep, that’s probably a good place to start.” The Ranger motions for you to follow and takes off for the Contest Hall.

----------------

Matt and Mina (Contest Hall):

Matt finds Mina in the Contest Hall, as expected – and you recognize Pellana with her. The two of them are standing over a Blender; Pellana is mixing while the black-haired girl seems to be supervising. The distinct scents of burned fruit and Poffin are easily detectible.

As Matt had been the one to suggest the week-long ‘break’ Mina figured he was just making conversation. Mina took her share with thanks and replied, “I think we’re good for now? I have something for you too.” She dug out the safe loot she’d earmarked for Matt earlier. “This was in that safe you guys brought back.”

Mina had just finished fishing out Matt’s share before she had to make a dive for the Blender, narrowly saving a Pinap Berry from going in.

As I casually tuck the Leaf Stone and Max Revive away in my pack I look up as the girls quarrel over the Poffin Maker.

“Don’t - double up – on the Berries!” Mina scolded Pellana. “Only one of each kind!”

“But why? That doesn’t make any sense!”

“I don’t know I didn’t write the laws of physics!”

Before I realized what I was saying, and ironic as I decided Poffins weren't the thing for me to become interested in making anyway, I snarked at Pellana saying, "Boy for someone who's such a strong battler, you aren't very smart when it comes to cooking are ya?" As soon as the words came out I gulped as Pellana's face seemed to get a very angry red colour and dashed out the door as fast as my legs could carry me, yelling over my shoulder on my way out, "I'm sorry! That wasn't me! I'm sleep deprived or possessed!"

I'm unsure how far I ran, or if Pellana had bothered to chase and clobber me, but I was panting and a good distance from town as I could see the lights in the distance. I wiped my head, beads of sweat trickling down my face.

Welp, think I'll stay out of town for a while. Reckon I might do some training. Or look for pokemon. Perhaps both!

((Dinner "date"))

Mark blinks as he thinks about that, mumbling, "Wait... no, that's the video games... I'm extra stupid, ignore me." ((And before anyone objects, Pokemon the video game series is 100% canon within the pokemon games. You can find kids and game devs playing them in every single game, it's TOTALLY CANON! ))

Shaking his childhood out of his head, he says, "Well, I think we should still battle against the gym leaders we can anyway. Even if it's only to get a bit more experience on our teams." Munching on some of his indeterminate meal of generally moderate cost and nutritional value, he says, "See if Pellana is still doing matches against trainers while you're with her!"

__________________________________________________

((Chevlain, Pre-Wain))

Heart skipping a beat, Mark watches that almost negligent push of the most expensive piece of technology (except maybe the storage boxes) in this pokemon center as it skids towards his feet. But, upon looking down and noticing that it isn't broken into 900 different pieces, he lets out a low, obviously relieved breath. Bending down and very deliberately setting down Chevlain's pokeball as a sign of trust, he takes the prosthetic and lifts it up to the socket waiting at his shoulder.

Metal slides against metal for a moment, and the young trainer winces as an audible 'click' fills the room once the arm is fully in place, and, keeping his shoulder steady, Mark attaches each of the external clips to ensure it's fully secure. A servo motor whirring can be heard as he makes sure the pilot rod is properly lined up, a second click, much more muted this time, can be heard, and that one comes with a sharp intake of breath as the sudden sensation of re-connected nerves floods through him. "That... always feels weird."

Letting out a low sigh, he lifts up his mechanical arm and waves at his dragon type, smiling a bit and saying, "And that, is how it works. Technically, if the securing plate on the back of the wrist here wasn't part of this, I could rotate my hand in circles, but... this keeps things a bit more, uh, 'natural,' easier to move like it's just my normal, real arm. And... yeah. Anything else you want to know?"

__________________________________________________

((The Wainening))

And with that, they are off to the contest hall! And Mark will be looking for any staff or those contest girls he'd saved so that he can talk about getting that private room.

__________________________________________________

((After everything))

If he has time, Mark will send Mina a message asking if she'd like to continue training Houndoom and Skarmory together, specifically training houndoom to ride the flying/ steel type. The actual message is, "Hey my dawnflower, think you have time for us to teach your old dog and my bird some new tricks?" Because Mark's a DORK!

And I'll let Taillow scout for adversaries both humane and pokemane.

Mark and Mina (dinner):

"See if Pellana is still doing matches against trainers while you're with her!"

“I don’t see why she wouldn’t,” Mina replied after a sip from her milkshake. “But I can ask her about it if you want.”

----------------

Mina (after dinner):

Mina squeezed in a little more training with her Natu before turning in for the night:

Pokemon: Natu
Type: Psychic/Flying
Ability: Synchronize
Gender: Male
Level: 27
Held Item: Everstone
Stats--
HP: 66
Attack: 40 +15
Def: 37
Sp. Attack: 51
Sp. Def: 37
Speed: 51 +22
Moves:
Peck
Nightshade
Teleport
Miracle Eye
Me First
Confuse Ray

----------------

Mark (pre-Wain):

Chevalin watches the whole procedure with what appears to be wary interest. She rumbles something, which Tattersail then translates:

<She says she wants one.> Tattersail does a double-take, then chatters back in Pokéspeak. <You don’t have arms in the first place, what would you use it for?> Chevalin repeats herself – the rumble being the exact same pattern as before, you don’t even need it translated this time, then lies down with an air of finality.

----------------

Mark (post-Wain):

You and the Ranger successfully obtain usage of a secure room in the Contest Hall. The lady you talk to even gives you a set of keys, with instructions to return the keys once you’ve finished with the room.

Once you’re in the room, the Ranger indicates for you to close and lock the door. He takes out his Styler and pulls something out of his pocket.

“Once you call your Pokémon out, if you can handle her safely, rub this on her – it’s a special cologne for Pokémon. It’ll help her calm down. I’ll have my Styler ready to help out.”

((Mark received a Vivid Scent! Shadow Gauge -30%, Happiness +3 – note that cologne can be used once per day.))

----------------

Mark (after everything – your training of Sengar wraps up about 6:30 PM BTW):

You wait a few moments, but get no response.

----------------

Matt:

Taillow finds nothing after a solid hour of searching, so you settle down to train.

Ratman takes being used as a punching bag in good stride, though he’s a little battered afterwards – not all or even most of Wythir’s attacks are harmless to the Normal type. Still, you think you’ve got a better idea of what Wythir can do now, and she’s gotten a bit of training as well.

((Pokemon: Wythir
Type: Ghost
Ability: Pyrophobe
Gender: Female
Level: 21
Held Item: NONE
Stats--
HP: 64
Attack: 45 +15

Will-O-Wisp – Fire type, status. Burns the target.
Stomp – Normal type, does damage. Runs off Attack. May cause target to Flinch.
Ominous Wind – Ghost type, does damage. Runs off Special Attack. Small chance to raise the user’s Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed.

Nodding, he says, "Yeah, I would seriously appreciate that. I'm, ah, not the best at talking to people that I don't really know. As you have... probably kinda noticed." He says, rubbing the back of his neck nervously.

______________________________

((Pre-Wain))

Mark blinks too, also taken off-guard by that, and he says, "Well, I don't think that they, uh, have anything like this in Helnith, and I can't really afford to get another one right now but... I mean... why do you want one? You aren't missing any limbs as far as I can see..." Then, remembering that robots are awesome and so is robocop, and knowing that it might just be the 'cool' factor kicking in, Mark reluctantly says, "But I guess I'll ask the nurse about them, if you wanted. Just to see what she says, alright?"

After her answer, Mark pulls out his phone and checks the time, and he tells her, "So, I set up a meeting with the local park ranger. I-I'm not sure if you can just, you know, tell, but right now you're shadowed, and I was asking him for help in reducing and getting rid of that. If you feel up to it, we would be taking you somewhere private and safe, like this room here, and we would do a mock battle, just you, me, the ranger and two other pokemon. Kinda like what we're doing now, just so we can help you get through the whole shadowing thing. I-If you don't want to, we won't, and I'll see if he can offer something else to help. It's entirely up to you, and you can change your mind at any time, even you are sent out or we've started the battle. Alright?"

______________________________

((With Wain, after closing and locking the door))

Mark nods, grateful for the tool, and he tells Wain, "Alright, just... stand back and give her some room when I send her out. She's b-been through a lot, and doesn't... well, she h-has good reason not to trust people." With that, he sends out Kirlia (so that she can translate any of Chevlain's responses), and he steps into the center of the room and lets out the dragon type, positioned so that he's in between her and the ranger, and Kirlia is standing to his side.

Once she's given time to adjust and he's certain she isn't going to attack anyone, Mark waves his mechanical hand a little bit, the motors and gears whirring mechanically to get her attention, and he says, "Um, hey again. I-It's me..." Mentally kicking himself because who else would it be, he holds up the Vivid Scent and says, "The ranger says that this will help you think a little bit more clearly. Um... are you okay with me coming close and applying it to you?" Glancing back at Wain, he asks, "It's a spray, right?"

______________________________

((After training))

Surprised that Mina doesn't text him back promptly, figuring that she's probably a bit busy, Mark goes to pick up a bite to eat from the pokemon center. And if she's still not answering by the time he's done, he figures that he might as well go to the contest hall again and check in on her. And maybe ensure that she's not ripping out her own hair, or killing Pellana, or vice versa. Poffin making always seemed like the most dangerous occupation to him, so he wouldn't put it past the girls.

An electric type huh? I frowned somewhat disappointed. I shouldn't be though, I've never even heard of a Shinx before.

"Ratman, Wythir, return. You guys have trained hard and deserve a long rest, Flaaffy, come out. Perhaps you can...uhm, electric translate for me?" I watch the Shinx curiously as Flaffy appears in a burst of light. It didn't seem to run away.

"Are you okay? I'm not going to hurt you, are you injured or something? What do you keep staring at me for!" I say with a laugh. "Were you watching Rattata and Wythir train this whole time? Did you want to train too?" Honestly I've no idea what it's intentions are. Unless it's a stronger electric type than Flaaffy I likely won't use it. Though I suppose there's always trade value and I'd still like a fire type of sorts. Man, I'd feel bad if I just go and capture some innocent pokemon that might have a poke-spouse and poke-family... "Are you here with your family little guy?" Oh god...I'm having a full blown conversation with a wild pokemon.... what a site THIS must be...

"Well, I don't think that they, uh, have anything like this in Helnith, and I can't really afford to get another one right now but... I mean... why do you want one? You aren't missing any limbs as far as I can see..."

Chevalin lets out a low grumbling growl before you continue.

Tattersail has been staring intently at the Ice-type after her last outburst; now she chimes in privately mind-to-mind. <Mark, the reading I’m getting from her is…complex.> At which point you remember distantly that Kirlia as a species – and the Ralts line in general - are supposed to be really good at sensing emotion. <I don’t think she wants a metal arm to have a metal arm. I think this is a test.>

"But I guess I'll ask the nurse about them, if you wanted. Just to see what she says, alright?"

Chevalin settles down.

”…It's entirely up to you, and you can change your mind at any time, even you are sent out or we've started the battle. Alright?"

Chevalin just nods once.

----------------

Mark (post-Wain):

Having been warned in advance, Chevalin takes her change in surroundings in stride.

"The ranger says that this will help you think a little bit more clearly. Um... are you okay with me coming close and applying it to you?"

Chevalin thinks for a moment, then sits back on her haunches.

"It's a spray, right?"

“You rub it on, actually.” ((OoC: I don’t actually remember if the Orre games specified, but the wiki says it’s for a Cologne Massage, so…)) The Ranger looks a little uneasy as he answers; he’s fiddling with his Styler a little.

----------------

Mark (Contest Hall):

Mina still hasn’t texted you back by the time you finish eating, so you swing by the Contest Hall. A small crowd of people is ringed outside – outside, because copious amounts of smoke are coming out of the Hall. It smells like someone set an entire bakery of pies on fire.

----------------

Matt:

The Shinx doesn’t answer back, holding mostly still except for its tiny little nose sniffing rapidly in your direction.

Your Flaaffy chatters something at the Shinx; the Shinx says something cautiously back. Flaaffy then gets your attention and chatters something at you; unfortunately, it’s still in Pokéspeak, and thus largely incomprehensible. You’re a little more familiar with Flaaffy’s body-language however, so you gather that the Shinx does want something you just can’t tell what.

"Alright, this isn't really getting me anywhere... Look Flaafy, if it wants us to follow it, we'll follow it. If it wants to battle and train or something, well... let it have the first attack I guess." Wait... could it be possible it's just hungry or thirsty? I take out the bag of trail mix and pour some water into a cup and place it on the ground. "If you're hungry, eat up! I'm not sure what kinda food you pokemon eat, but if I had to guess.... it's a lot of berries and the like. This area... I don't know... doesn't seem very full of berry trees or anything." I frown at the thought. Perhaps it's best left forgotten.

Matt:

The little Shinx approaches the food cautiously, sniffs it a bit, then has a few tentative bites. You can tell right away she’s not starving, as she doesn’t scarf it or even finish more than those few nibbles. She does perk up a bit after trying the food, then bounds a few feet away before looking back at you and calling out. Your Flaaffy motions for you to follow.

"Alright, guess we'll follow it then." I cautiously keep an eye out for anything suspicious. I'm far from being the most stealthy thing out here and don't want any random Bandra goons to come across.

((Dinner))

The awkward silence was absolutely worse than her making light of it or even admitting that, yeah, Mark is a pretty super duper awkward guy in social situations, and his face becomes a bit flush as he rambles out, “It’s just, you know, I don’t know those people and I don’t want to... embarrass myself, or m-make them feel awkward, and I a-always want to, you know, use the right words and... and I should stop. I should definitely stop. Hello dinomon nuggets, get in my mouth so I s-stop being an idiot.” And with that, he hastily puts the pokemon equivalent of dinosaur chicken nuggets in his face to shut himself up.

He’s broken again. Look what you did Mina. This is definitely, entirely, your fault.

((Pre-Wain))

With permission established and the plan set, Mark recalls Chevlain and Lapras (leaving out Kirlia to be his witness) and goes to the nurse to ask about the arm like he’d promised. Because even if it’s a ridiculous request, he told Chevlain that she can trust him, and he plans to make good on that promise.

After that discussion, he goes out to meet Wain.

((With Wain))

Nodding at that, Mark applies the cream to his non-robotic hand (because his prosthetic limb already needs to be cleaned out, it doesn’t need MORE gunk in there) and he slowly approaches, letting Chevlain see him at every step of the process as he applies the cologne to... well, this player guesses the flank, along the sides of the neck, and along the top of the snout, but ultimately wherever it is supposed to be applied. And the entire time, more to keep himself relaxed than anything, he hums the Kanto national anthem under his breath. Something that, when combined with the “Kiss Me I’m from Kanto” shirt he’s wearing makes it painfully obvious that he’s a tourist to the ranger and any region-savvy ‘mon in the room.

((Contest hall))

Looking at the smoke, Mark groans and goes to someone in the crowd to ask was happened, and if they know where Mina is. And when that obviously just gets blank looks sent his way, he asks where gym leader Pellena is instead.
