Alright. Chevalin was still not working with him, but at least his other pokemon were still able to keep up and follow his commands. And Sengar was still throwing out moves Mark had never heard of. "Fisher, use sing. Chevalin use frustration. Marick use metal claw. Corphish continue intercepting attacks. Sengar," Firming up his voice, he tried to command the rampaging dark type, "use endure."

I don't know why those stat boosts are listed, fixing!

Matt:

You found a Dragon Gem! ((DM reminder: single-use held item that boosts the Power of that type of attack.))

((+1 Dragon Gem. 1 hit remaining.))

Mark:

Chevalin uses Frustration!
Sengar is hit for 23 damage!

Fisher uses Sing!
Attack missed!

Sengar makes eye contact and the expression on his face is chilling. Your Pokédex starts blaring.

"WARNING! WARNING! Shadow Pokémon detected! Shadow Rage imminent."

The black-and-purple splotches weren’t terribly visible on his black-to-begin-with hide, but now he seems less like a Pokémon and more like a hole in space. The Pokédex also informs you that his wounds have healed and his power level is shooting up.

Sengar uses Shadow Sky!

Marick uses Metal Claw!
Sengar is hit for 14 damage!

Let's use the final pick hit on J.

I pick up the Time Flute and look at it curiously.

"Didn't the Elder mention this item when it comes to de-shadowing pokemon? Hm. Let's test something... Ratman, Poli, Gastly come out. Let's see if playing this flute has some effect on Ratman."

Okay. No more playing around, delaying or playing defensively, this was now a major problem that needed to be taken care of. "Chevalin, frustration. Fisher, ice shard. Corphish, vice grip. Marick, metal claw." He needed to blitz down the rest of Sengar's HP before the out of control pokemon could knock out one of his non-shadowed pokemon. He didn't even try to give the already-disobedient dark type a command, given... there was all of zero and no chance it would be obeyed this time.

Ah, curse this sudden yet inevitable betrayal. Grumbling under his breath, Mark tells 'Sail, "Fine, mom. I'll get my steps in..." And he walked himself from the contest hall room over to the pokemon center, moving a bit gingerly and sitting down for a bit before sheepishly telling the nurse what had happened. He made sure to emphasize that he was hit because of unfortunate random chance and poor wording (since if he'd told Corphish to intercept all of Sengar's attacks, he wouldn't have been hit in the first place) and that he didn't feel like anything was broken, just bruised and tender.

He also made sure his team actually got healed, and sends a message off to Mina telling her, "Hey Sunshine. I just got to experience that whole 'pokemon playing my ribs like a xylophone' thing. 0/10, would not recommend. How are you holding up?" Even if Mina was ignoring him (as he currently believes,) he's going to try reaching out... at least one more time.

Wait... What just happened?

I couldn't help standing there confused at how a flute magically gets rid of this maddening disease but I wasn't about to complain. After rubbing my eyes and slapping my face to make sure I was awake, I drop to my knees and start crying, blabbering like a baby and apologizing to Ratman profusely for the agony I'm certain I caused him as well as the others.

Completely forgetting about mining, I excitedly call out Taillow and Flaafy.

"Look you guys, it's going to be okay! I'm going to cure you both so just sit tight. Music soothes the savage beast in all of us!" I stammer through tears.

Without missing a beat I play the flute two more times, then other realizations hit.

"Good gravy I can cure Mark, Mina's, Pellana's, and the Ranger's shadowed pokemon too!" I say to nobody in particular cradling the flute as though it were the most precious thing on earth.

EDIT:

Mina:

((Time to catch me up!

Day 23 – Trainer Hill: ))

Mina was wishing she’d felt like she’d won that last match for reasons other than her opponent being very predictable when the platform she was on made a very ominous-sounding grinding noise and stopped moving.

Oh dear. Mina examined the platform trying to figure out if there was a button she could push or, failing that, a hole big enough to scoot out of so she at least wouldn’t be trapped. If I had Natu with me I could just Teleport out!

After a few minutes of this, one of the Battle Frontier technicians got her attention through the narrow gap by the floor. “Sorry about this miss, one of the motors blew. Sit tight, we’ll get you out as soon as we can.”

So Mina sat down and started digging through her pack to find a way to occupy herself in the mean time. I should probably text Fate…wait, I still have this Time Flute. She still felt a little guilty for snatching historical artifacts out of the Shrine of Light, but it had been life or death…not right now though. She should probably find out who it had belonged to before Bandra had taken over the Shrine.

She should, but it occurred to her she also ought to de-Shadow Houndoom – she did not presently have anything that could put him to sleep or otherwise stop him in his tracks if he got violent except Thunder Wave, which wasn’t nearly thorough enough given that he was easily one of her more powerful Pokémon. Or she should give it to someone else – Matt had a lot more Pokémon Shadowed and Mina had some Cologne she could use on her own Pokémon. And the Ranger might need help with that wild Bronzor.

She argued with herself for a bit before finally texting Ranger Wain – she’d feel guilty if she didn’t at least try to get the Flute and the Horrible Beads back to their rightful owner. Aside from being uncomfortable with looting neutral parties (Bandra didn’t count; they were the bad guys) she’d probably end up getting arrested for theft if she kept them, her luck was that bad. And neither of the boys had asked for it, so it was possible that they had plans in place for de-Shadowing their Pokémon.

While she waited for the elevator to be fixed Mina was able to establish with the Ranger that the Bronzor had been cleansed already (Mina sighed with relief) and that the Ranger both knew who to contact and could arrange for them to come get the items in two days. She was informed that she should come to the shop in Rieva; apparently the old couple there were friends of the donor.

Finally the technicians got the elevator moving again, and an official-looking person apologized on the behalf of the Battle Frontier and gave her three BP for the inconvenience, which Mina figured should at least cover a few more Revives later. It would be worth it if they got them out of another spot as tough as the Shrine of Light. ((+3 BP, 4 total.))

And then she went off on her Berry watering spree. ((Covered in a previous post.))

((Day 24, right after talking with Matt: ))

"Hello Mina! Good day to you, I hope you're doing well! I'm over in Skybreak City heading back to Ceris, but wanted to give you a heads up to be careful! Apparently taking down that Taskmaster at the Ruins has Bandra a little stirred up and some Officer Hannah and an elite 4 slayer guy called Darrin are up in Ternai town. The newspaper the article was in says there may be increased Bandra activity now. Keep your eyes peeled! Though I'm sure you don't need to be told that... By the way, is Mark with you? Could you relay the message please if he is?"

“Hannah and Darrin are both in Ternai Town right now?” That means…Keida is undefended right now? Or relatively undefended? “No, Mark isn’t with me, but I’ll pass it on if I see him.”

"According to the newspaper yes, they were spotted there. Have you been to Ternai town? You sound concerned. Everything okay?"

“I’m fine,” She said. Then pondered privately: It could be a trap, like last time.

"I can try giving Mark a call to fill him in as well since he's not with you. I'm sure you've been busy getting things back into working order since our trip to the Ruins."

“Okay. Talk to you later!” It could be a trap. But what if it’s not? How many Officers does Bandra have, anyway? But surely they’re not stupid enough…er, surely their higher ups aren’t stupid enough to have their top defender take off without some kind of backup? They’ve got weirdo experiments going on there at the very least… Or had that just been because the rift was there? The locals seemed to know when those were going to open, Mina presumed there was some kind of predictable schedule to it, like an eclipse or the tides. Maybe there wasn’t anything in Keida presently important enough for an Officer to oversee.

An idea was forming, terrifying with its implications.

If we hit it right now could we kick Bandra out? But what if they’ve got a different Officer there, or something else nasty to make up for Hannah being gone? She’d taken too many friends and allies into unwinnable fights recently. And on the flip side, after the mess in the Shrine of Light she wasn’t sure she could rely on either of the boys in a tight spot.

But that meant going it alone. And her Houndoom was still Shadowed and he was one of her most powerful Pokémon. She should have done something about it before this, but now there wasn’t time. She did not herself possess strong enough Pokémon to take back the town. (She was relatively certain even with her Houndoom usable, and both boys and even Pellana and Ranger Wain all together they couldn’t – they’d barely survived the Shrine of Light, and that was with a bunch of loose Pokémon for backup and with less time for Bandra to fortify beforehand.) But she could at least spy on them, and maybe do some light sabotage. It might at least slow them down.

She realized she’d already made up her mind and checked the map.

She’d been to Keida itself, of course, but she wasn’t keen on Teleporting directly into Bandra’s midst when they had a way of detecting Teleports. Maybe in ten or twenty levels. But for now, it would probably be less attention grabbing to get close and then just walk the rest of the way.

…have I been to Rieva before? Yes! That was where I had that awkward dinner with Mark. Did I have Natu with me then?...yes, I did. Okay, so Teleport into Rieva, go overland to Keida then…see what they’re doing and what I can break I guess.

There was the little problem that Bandra would probably see her, and would know she wasn’t one of theirs if they didn’t outright recognize her from previous encounters. Did I grab a uniform from them? She checked her pack. I did not.

She also had that book she hadn’t taken to Skybreak City yet – oops – she should find a way to stash that somewhere safe, just in case, since it was apparently important enough for a random stranger to wake her up in the middle of the night.

Focus, Mina. I need to sneak into the town.

The map said it was a little more than ten miles from Rieva to Keida. So…five hours, maybe six of travel time? It was about 10:30 AM now, that put her there mid-afternoon. She’d really prefer they didn’t recognize her on sight, maybe she should wait until nightfall…and she needed to pick out her Pokémon before she took off…

After hashing out a plan of attack, Mina had Natu Teleport her to Rieva. She gave the book to Serranix with instructions to run away with it if anyone but Mina tried to take it. (Mina wasn’t entirely sure she needed to give directions in that regard, as skittish as the poor Pokémon was, but better safe than sorry.) She then swapped out Serranix with Pikachu; there would hopefully be something for her little Electric type to do this time.

Then she checked the time. 11 AM. Still too early.

…But this was great, she realized. She had time to water her Berries and rub some Cologne on Houndoom.

So she asked the Nurse for a secure room and called him out.

Right away she was having second thoughts; his eyes were unfriendly to the point of being soulless. She should have called out Oodramer first – or Pikachu. Or both!

Too late now. She poured a little of the Warm Scent on her hands and rubbed it between them – that was something masseuses did wasn’t it? – trying to keep her voice steady and calm. “Hello, my dear, I need you to hold still – “

He snapped at her. Barely missed her fingers. But his keen nose must have caught a whiff of the Scent because he looked briefly confused and let her slowly approach. ((Close roll!))

((Later: ))

An hour later Mina was nearly covered in as much cinnamon-scented oil as her Pokémon, but his Shadow Gauge was lower so she counted it a win. ((-30% Shadow Gauge, 70% remaining, -1 Warm Scent, 0 remaining.))

It was now noon; she grabbed a bite to eat from the Pokémon Center kitchen and watered her Berries ((Persim sprouted)), called out Pidgey to keep an eye out for trouble and then set off north to Keida.

((6:30 PM: ))

She arrived after a worryingly uneventful trip; there were signs that several somethings had been carving separate paths of destruction through the area, but no appearance of the somethings themselves. Mina wondered if the wild Pokémon were just hiding from the whatevers, but it made her nervous all the same. She found herself some bushes to hide in – never mind any scratches, Natu could fix them later – and called out Natu and Pikachu, then told them the plan:

Pidgey would fly out and circle the area until he found a patrol – ideally, a lone Grunt, but Mina doubted they’d be that lucky. Once he’d found one he was to come back and get them and then they’d attack - Natu was to target any radios with Nightshade, Pikachu was to Thunder Wave any Grunts and Pidgey was to Quick Attack the Grunts and try to knock them out, hopefully before they could get their own Pokémon out. Then Mina would grab one of their uniforms and use it to sneak around town, cause mischief if possible, gather information if not. If she got caught she’d call out Houndoom and hope an angry Shadow Pokémon would be a sufficient distraction until her other Pokémon could get to her and Natu would Teleport them all out – no one was going back into their balls until then, both so she would have some help on hand and so the lights wouldn’t draw attention.

While she waited she went through her pack, looking for anything else she could use as a disguise. She still had that cloak, but it hadn’t fit the last time and Mina was looking to blend in, not start a career as a super hero. She didn’t have much in the way of Contest Accessories she could use for disguise, but she could at least dye her hair to something other than its natural black – her options were blue, purple and glow-in-the-dark green. (Mina made a face at the glow-in-the-dark and grabbed the blue.)

She was mostly done when Pidgey came back. Long association let her tell he was stressed.

“Did you find any?” Mina whispered. Pidgey cooed and nodded. Mina quietly packed back up (making sure to clean the dye off her hands) and followed him.

She could see why he was stressed out soon enough; the patrol he’d found was on high alert, and there were three of them; Mina was not confident her Pokémon could take out all three before they could call for help or call out Pokémon. She directed her Pokémon to hold off and stayed hidden; maybe if she listened in she could learn something.

Mina had to repress a jump at every snapped twig and rustled leaf. But it didn’t take long to realize she wasn’t the only one; the Grunts were very on edge. She couldn’t make out much of what they were saying (so much for that plan) but she heard the words ‘Shadow Pokémon’ and realized:

Right. Some of the other group members had released the Shadow Pokémon experiments the last time they’d tried to free the town. Presumably, they were still loose – Mina should count herself lucky she hadn’t run into any herself.

A new idea formed. “Pidgey,” she whispered. “Go find one of the loose Shadow Pokémon – make sure to stay out of its range, and lure it back here. We’ll try to have it distract the Grunts, maybe split them up if we’re lucky.”

Pidgey looked at her like she was crazy (maybe she was) but nodded and flew off. There was a brief moment of tension as the Grunts noticed the brush rustle from his absence, but Mina and her other Pokémon held absolutely still and eventually the Grunts seemed to decide it was nothing important.

Pidgey came crashing back shortly later, followed by something small and ground-bound that yodeled a frenzied battle cry. Her bird was injured ((38/76 HP)) but determinedly flew right through the Grunts, and the angry yodeler smashed right into the centermost Grunt’s legs trying to keep up.

The was a pair of wet snaps and the Grunt collapsed screaming. The other two called out a Graveler apiece and Mina saw one reach for his radio.

Now!

Pikachu and Natu leaped into action at once. The radio was blasted out of the Grunt’s hand and the other collapsed, paralyzed. Pidgey swooped around and clonked the radio Grunt soundly over the head and he collapsed too – the third was screaming and trying desperately to cover her face as the small Shadow Pokémon – Mina didn’t recognize it but it was about two feet high and had a dog-like head – ripped into her.

Mina felt cold resolve settle in her chest and ordered Pikachu to Thunder Wave the remaining Grunt, then dashed over to the already-incapacitated Grunts and called back the Graveler before they could get their bearings. She supposed she should be more worried about a fellow human being getting ripped up by a rabid Pokémon, but…

You chose to join Bandra. The Pokémon didn’t choose to be your experiment.

And from a more practical standpoint, the Pokémon wasn’t going to radio the rest of Bandra for backup.

Fortunately for the Grunt, her sudden paralysis brought the Shadow Pokémon’s attention away from her and onto Mina and her Pokémon. Mina barely managed to duck in time (Oh no you don’t! I just got over my last Pokémon-inflicted injury!) and called for Pikachu to Thunder Wave it too, then (more or less on a whim, because why leave the poor thing to run rabid?) threw a Great Ball at it.

The ball snapped open after two shakes. The Pokémon – the Pokédex said it was a Riolu – leapt for Mina again, but this time Pidgey intercepted.

Shadow Riolu used Shadow Rush!
Pidgey is hit for 6 damage!
Shadow Riolu takes 1 damage in recoil!

((Pidgey: 32/76

Shadow Riolu: 12/26))

Mina threw another Great Ball, but this one snapped even faster.

Shadow Riolu uses Counter!
Nothing happened!

Mina picked out her last Great Ball, wishing she’d stocked up earlier – if she couldn’t catch this thing she was going to have to drive it off or knock it out.

Third time was apparently the charm, however, as this time the ball shook thrice and dinged the capture –

– and promptly warped off to Box Storage. Mina had just enough time to register that it was holding something and was surprisingly a Fighting type (Don’t those usually have more muscles?) before reminding herself she had work to do.

She checked all three Grunts: they were all alive but unconscious or otherwise immobile, though she wasn’t sure if the injured Grunt was going to stay that way, as she was bleeding profusely. Mina didn’t have time to do anything about that and wasn’t sure she wanted to, so instead she stripped the uniform off the Grunt closest to her in size and made to duct tape them all - only to realize she was out of duct tape. She settled for having Pikachu Thunder Wave them all again for good measure, shoved all their Pokéballs into a second Grunt’s shirt and used it (with help from her birds) to hang them from a tree in sight but out of reach.

Hopefully that would keep them out of her way.

((+700 PD (3,450 PD total), +1 Ashion Berry, +2 Ebet Berries from looting Grunts.))

Mina treated Pidgey’s wounds ((-2 Potions, 0 remaining, Pidgey is 72/76 HP)), hid her pack some distance from the Grunts and directed Natu to guard it, then took off for the town, hoping her new disguise would work. Her other Pokémon trailed behind, trying to stay in sight of Mina but out of sight of anything else.

((Yellow: Spa

On arriving in the town proper, Mina noticed right away that there weren’t many people out and about. Of course it was late evening, so that might be part of it, but given the amount of light and smell coming out of the Contest Hall, Bandra was still busy doing something so it wasn’t like they were sleeping. (Mina had a strong suspicion this was where the Grunts were getting their Contest boosts, and that would explain why that patrol had been carrying Berries.) Most of the buildings were lit up, in fact; Mina allowed herself a split second of congratulations because she wouldn’t have been able to do much useful sneaking around without the disguise. She squashed the feeling when she noticed Pokémon Center was not one of them, and still had water damage from Hannah’s Milotic; no sense getting cocky.

The Pokémon in the Daycare yard didn’t seem immediately concerned at her approach, though a large Graveler looked at Mina curiously before shuffling off into the dark. The fencing had been upgraded at some point and there was some kind of wiring over the top. What she could see inside were mostly Grunt species; Wispaferyn and Graveler and so on. They appeared to be in good shape as far as she could see; no injuries or obvious signs of abuse. Was Bandra just trying to get more Pokémon when the wilderness had been stripped bare, or was something else going on here? Mina glanced around and, when it was clear there weren’t any humans nearby, did some scanning with her Pokédex. The ones she could scan all had Egg Moves or other unusual-for-the-species attacks. This didn’t bode well for future encounters.

Mina made a mental note to free them if she could manage it. She looked around but the only gate she could see was padlocked securely shut. No opening that without a key.

On the west side of town Mina found a pickup truck. Its doors were also locked, sadly - she’d passed her driver’s test and she’d have considered driving it off. There was a big gas can in the back, and when Mina tried to shift it it was reassuringly heavy. This had promise and Mina pulled it out of the truck and hid it.

More spying, or stop trying her luck and go?

Her question got answered for her.

“You there! What are you doing out there?!”

It was a Taskmaster in the doorway of the Contest Hall. All Mina could see was his silhouette.

“Thought I heard something boss!” she lied. Mina wished she were better at it, but if the Taskmaster could tell something was amiss he didn’t show it. “What do you need?”

“Get back in here and get some more Berries to the mixing room,” he waved her inside, obviously irritated. “You wander off again, and I’m not sending anyone to go get you when the Shadow Pokémon rip you to shreds.”

So that was why it was so quiet out here.

“Yessir!” Mina darted past him inside, really glad the Grunt uniform had a mask.

She could see a number of Grunts around mixers, each with boxes next to them. More boxes lined one wall, though Mina couldn’t see what they contained. They seemed to have some kind of system going – or at least, the Grunts were putting in Berries and viable Poffin seemed to be coming out instead of smoke. Mina didn’t have time to get a closer look, as the Taskmaster angrily pointed her to a door and told her to stop lollygagging.

She shut the door behind her and looked around. She thought it would be difficult to find anything but it seemed like Bandra hadn’t been cleaning since they took over: there was an obvious trail of dirt from many footprints going to all the rooms they used regularly. She glanced in open doors and tried to peek in closed ones when the halls were empty.

One of them was an office; and were those keys on the desk? They were! Mina supposed there was no guarantee they were to somewhere important…she snuck inside and her heart nearly stopped as she heard someone coming in the hallway.

Mina hid behind the desk, praying fervently, and the footsteps kept going past the door and out of earshot.

She didn’t quite relax at that point, but she did snatch the keys and sneak back out. ((+Keida Taskmaster’s Keys)) That was definitely an automobile logo on one of them, did it match the one on the pickup? Mina mentally kicked herself for not making note of it when she had the chance. She’d just have to hope they were the right ones.

But first, she needed to get out of here. She decided to play along and ferry Berries for now; maybe she could steal a box on her way out, or do some sabotage.

The Berry boxes were easy enough to find; someone had lined a bunch of them up just inside the south entrance. And it was here that part of the Bandra Poffin making system became clear, because now she could see that each box was labeled ‘DRY’ or ‘SPICY’ - or ‘MIXED’ and in one case ‘COMPOST’, the last having a handful of squished or otherwise damaged Berries in it – so they didn’t even need to train their Grunts which flavors cancelled out, just hand them a pre-sorted box of one flavor. Glancing inside, each box was filled with straw to cushion the fruit it contained: there were about two dozen fruit each, four rows of four different Berry varieties.

Mina nearly jumped out of her skin again as the door swung open. She needn’t have worried; a Grunt with dirt up to his elbows pushed through carrying another box and plopped it down by the rest before leaving again. He even gruffly apologized for startling her!

Mina checked quickly to make sure no one else was nearby and then hastily swapped out half the Berries in one box for the Berries in another. Dry cancels out Spicy right? Then she picked up one of the tampered boxes and carried it back to the mixing room.

She’d done this three times and was thinking it was time to make a break for it when the Taskmaster cornered her.

“What does this look like?” He was holding a Pinap Berry and a box labeled ‘DRY’.

“A Berry sir,” Mina was inwardly panicking. She should have realized the guy in charge was going to be keeping an eye on things. Left the tampered boxes here, brought untampered ones so they wouldn’t be discovered until she was gone. Drat! Too late now!

“This is not a Dry Berry,” he growled. A few heads were popping out of doorways to see what was going on.

“I just brought the boxes sir,” she replied meekly.

Don’t talk back to me Grunt!” He threw it at her and Mina felt it bounce off her skull. “Tell those idiots in the Spa to get the flavors straight or I’ll have all of your heads!” He then threw the box at her, spilling Berries everywhere. “And clean up this mess!”

He stormed off and Mina took a deep, slow breath. Definitely time to go!

But not empty-handed.

Mina picked up the Taskmaster’s mess until the curious Bandra goons had gone back behind closed doors or were otherwise out of sight. Once the coast was clear, Mina upended the ‘COMPOST’ box into the box the Taskmaster had thrown along with its (sadly ruined – or maybe not so sadly now that Bandra couldn’t use them!) contents, then upended a ‘MIXED’ box into the ‘COMPOST’ box and put the thrown box where the ‘COMPOST’ box had been. Then she picked it up and walked out.

Once outside she glanced around to locate the dumpsters, pretended to head to them then kept going into the dark. Only then did she circle around to the pickup truck, and on examination yes, that was the same logo! She put the box in the back, retrieved the gas can and called Pidgey and Pikachu to her.

“Stick close guys,” she whispered, “We’re getting out of here, just one more thing to do. Pidgey, go get Natu and the two of you bring my pack back here – put it in the back of the truck. Pikachu, you’re with me, stay as quiet as you can.”

And Mina carried the gas can over to the Daycare. She had to try more than one key to get the padlock open, but finally managed it, and swung the door open. Some of the Pokémon were watching her warily; Mina realized she was still wearing a Bandra uniform and they wouldn’t know it was just a disguise.

“Get out of here if you value your lives,” Mina informed them in a low voice. She didn’t stop to see if they’d listened, just took off for the Contest Hall with the gas can. The power for the building should come from right –

Hey!

Mina reacted automatically. “Thunder Wave!” The speaker collapsed with a sizzle, twitching.

Too close, too close, Mina could hear people stirring from the buildings at last; she dragged the gas can the rest of the way and unstopped it, then pushed it on its side. There was no hope for it; she didn’t have time to spread it, she’d just have to hope it worked as a distraction. “Pikachu, Thundershock the gas and let’s run for it!”

The gasoline caught flame almost immediately; she could hear at least one of the Bandra in residence redirect to the fire but there were more coming. But she wasn’t carrying a gas can now, and the pickup was in sight –

“Hold them off guys!” Nightshades and gusts of wind blew past her. Mina made it to the driver’s side door, Pikachu leaping in before her. Mina fumbled with the keys – which had the logo? That one! Come on, come on! “Pikachu, set up a distraction with Double Team!” The engine roared and Mina hit the gas.

Rumbles and flashes of fire going past and vaporizing illusionary duplicates reminded her she didn’t have a seatbelt. A small part of her also noted that she was actually going the wrong way to get out of Bandra territory, but she had to put some distance between her and her pursuers first.

A glance in the rear view mirror finally showed that Keida was out of sight. Mina turned the truck left – south – making sure to give her previous path a wide berth.

An hour and a half later she was most of the way back to Rieva and the truck slowed to a stop of its own accord. Oops, out of gas! Oh well, it was probably best she lose it anyway; it was big and obvious and might be trackable.

…Yes, GPS beacons in cars were a thing, weren’t they?

Feeling a brief spurt of panic – but not a big one, as it was now midnight and she’d been running off adrenaline for a while now – she got out.

“Great job guys!” She told her Pokémon. Then double-checked to make sure that she had, in fact, not lost either of her Flying types in the mad dash out. But they were both there, and Natu had successfully brought her pack, and even the box of Berries she’d smuggled out was relatively undamaged. She grabbed the latter and dumped its contents into the former; the Berries that had been damaged she gave to her Pokémon as a snack, saying “I’ll get you guys something more substantial once we find some cover. Have we got everything?”

“Pika,” Pikachu was digging behind the seats, and emerged with what looked like a very battered and dirty purse in her mouth.

“Good girl.” Mina patted her and shoved the purse into her pack; she’d dig through it later. “Let’s get out of here.”

((Later: ))

About an hour and two miles later, Mina and her Pokémon had made it close enough to the mountains to find some rock formations to camp in. It wasn’t the most comfortable, but Mina didn’t feel confident she could get any farther tonight – er, this morning, since it was about 1 AM. She fed her Pokémon – very carefully, in Houndoom’s case – called back Pidgey, Natu, and Pikachu and called out Oodramer and Sandshrew to keep watch, then went to sleep.

((Morning: ))

Her Pokédex informed her it was 8 AM when she called everyone out for breakfast. She sat and watched them eat while she planned her next move – and changed out of the Bandra uniform, as in addition to it potentially causing problems if she strode in to town wearing it, it was more than a little dirty from her sleeping on the ground. It went in her pack for now; she was uncomfortable carrying it around, but it had been useful and she wasn’t keen on littering anyway.

Mina also took the time to go through her spoils properly. In addition to the Berries she’d raided (mostly type-resister Berries – the boxed she’d grabbed hadn’t been as neatly organized as the single flavor boxes), the purse Pikachu had found had a yellow pin that resembled the Beauty Pin Misty had had what seemed like ages ago, and two little bottles that declared themselves to be ‘Extract’. But no money or identification of who the purse had belonged to originally.

The down side was that most of her current Berry plants had gone without water for some time now. But that couldn’t be helped, and it wasn’t like she hadn’t gotten anything done. She should probably fix that now though…

And so Mina was on a mad Teleport and watering spree when she got Mark’s text.

Rubbing at his chest, which was quite tender, Mark waited in line in the pokemon center right up to the point where his phone DINGED! when he received Mina's reply. Jumping just a little bit, he pulled his phone out of his pocket, fumbled it to the ground, picked it up again and apologized to the trainer behind him. Clearing his throat, he reads Mina's message, the knot of dread slowly unraveled as he realized that she had actually sent him a response to the question instead of just telling him to buzz off. His paranoia wasn't correct. She didn't hate him.

Feeling like a bit of a weight had been pulled from his shoulders Mark typed up a response, deleted it, wrote another one, deleted half of it, and then finally settled on, <I should be available this afternoon, or any time before sunset. Let me know when and where!> Looking at Tattersail, who he'd left out and walked beside to the center, Mark gave his psychic type a giant grin and two thumbs up.

What to do first... Ah! Right, pokemon center! We gotta swap Flaafy and Taillow out for Weepinbell and Wythir, unshadow them, figure out where Mark and Mina are and unshadow their pokemon, then everything should be right as rain. After finding Ana and removing shadow from her pokemon too... Hopefully without being beat up again.

I pull out the messenger app and message Mark, "Hey, can I meet you some place? I found a Time Flute that appears to deshadow pokemon! No I didn't steal it from anyone, I found it while digging, was fully charged so there's plenty to help you out with. Hope to hear back from you with a location and time, thank you." and hit SEND before heading back outside, away from potentially injuring anyone by accident, summoned every non-shadowed pokemon out except Pyrofyl, brought out Wythir with clear instructions to put it to sleep if it gets fiesty, and we'll do the same with Weepinbell afterwards.

Mark and Mina:

Mina had nearly typed out an answer when she remembered she had to meet with the museum donor today to give them their items back. She cleared the text and sent instead:

Since it was just after 10am, that gave Mark a few hours to get some training in once he'd gotten all of his pokemon healed and his ribs checked out and junk. If he could get his full team closer to at least level 30 by the end of the day, and Marick two levels closer to evolution... Well, he'd be feeling a bit more secure and have more options for his team.

After talking to the nurses, Mark deposits Sengar and Corphish in his box and he withdraws Tarr and Jessia. He wasn't planning to try de-shadowing his dark type any further today, not after all of the pain he'd gone through the past few hours, so all the pokemon he'd been planning to train would be in his party for now.

Mark then spends a few hours training Marick (by 2 levels) and drawing in his sketch book while waiting for Mina to show up.

Well, that was a good chunk of training. With that done, for now at least, Mark would bring his pokemon into the center and get them (and himself) something to eat. With some extra pokemon center food (both human and pokemon) in case Mina saw him and decided to join him, Mark sits down and flips to a new page in his journal.

On it, he drew a quick sketch: A headshot of Zelgius, with the dumbest yet still most super serious expression he could give the man. In little text bubbles Mark wrote, “Bluh bluh,” “I’m Zelgius, look at me and my stupid coat,” “No I’m not hot, ladies, I’m sexy,” “Blah blah,” “I’m a doctor, Max, not a nurse,” and “Mark, you’re twelve now, do your calculus homework.” The man had been kinda obnoxious, admittedly. But regardless, that’s what he’d be doing when Mina arrived or when he finally got Mat’s message, whichever came first.

The ultraball gets tucked away in Mark's bag once he's determined that there isn't any markings on it denoting an owner or other trainer will be looking for it... and on finding nothing, he reflected that it was nice to get actually lucky for a change.

Mina:

Mina finished her Teleport-and-water spree and had Natu take her to Rieva.

((Maroon: Inn/restaurant
White: Pokemon Center
Gray: Herb shop
Gold boxes: Combee Hives))

The herb shop was thankfully easy to find, and Mina was pleased to see the Vespiquen they’d rescued from the Shrine of Light directing the Combee out back. She waved to the Pokémon and went inside.

She found the donor easily enough; the older couple were behind the counter mucking about with some kind of machine (Mina noticed the price of Honey had been crossed out and was now half of what it had been) and she was the only other person in the shop: extremely short, extremely wrinkly, with her hair in a bowl cut – black streaked very liberally with grey. The three were chatting amicably and Mina was content to hover in the background and let them talk until the old man waved her over.

“The Ranger told us you were coming, you’re one of the trainers who helped bring our Beatrice back to us aren’t you?” It took Mina a couple seconds to realize he meant the Vespiquen. She nodded. “Talk to us after you and Ei are done with your business, we have something for you and your friends!”

Mina didn’t even have a chance to answer before the short lady – apparently, ‘Ei’ – was well inside her personal space, tapping her foot and tutting. Getting the hint, Mina fished out the Flute and Horrible Beads, only to have the former snatched from her grasp and the latter pushed back at her.

“What are you doing, I don’t want those horrible things!” Ei spoke very fast and with the authority of a person who knew exactly what they wanted and who was used to getting it.

“I thought they were yours?” Mina replied, confused.

“Yes, yes, yes, but I don’t need or want them back, darling, whatever would I do with them? But this…” Ei seemed to be mostly ignoring Mina in favor of examining the Flute. Her expression was edging toward disappointed. “…this is not as intact as I remember. You’re sure you didn’t use it?”

Mina was fairly certain she hadn’t said anything on the subject one way or another, but she hadn’t used it and said as much.

“No, no, no, this is not helpful! I would need almost three dozen like this for what I need to do!”

“What are you trying to do?” Mina asked, curious.

“Make new ones!”

“You can do that?” Mina wondered aloud. She’d figured there was some kind of ancient magic ritual involved or something.

“Of course I can! I am the greatest flute maker in Quibir!”

“Ei dearie, you’re the only flute maker in Quibir,” interjected the old lady behind the counter. She sounded amused.

Ei jabbed Mina in the chest with a finger. “Find me more of these! Then I will make the most perfect flutes in all the world for you and your friends, free of charge.” ((DM note: She needs 100 charges total. With the returned flute, 97/100 remaining.))

And then she was out the door.

“…is she always like that?” Mina inquired.

((Later: ))

Mina left the shop a half hour later with three jars of Honey, courtesy of the older couple (“Make sure to share it with your friends!”) and a Replacement Part Order Form after she’d asked if they’d needed any more Pokémon rescued. (Mina wasn’t certain if they were a little deaf or had just been looking to wrangle someone in to make the delivery for them, but as it needed to go to Skybreak instead of somewhere Bandra occupied, she didn’t mind much.) She’d also stopped by the Pokémon Center for a quick lunch, but calling out Houndoom reminded her: she needed more Cologne.

She hadn’t actually been to Skybreak City yet, and thus couldn’t Teleport in, but happily Trainer Hill was nearby and she could make progress on both at once.

After some consultation with the Scent Seller she determined that she could use the Clear Scent she already had on the little Riolu, which was good because the cost of another Warm Scent was eating into her savings. She bought one anyway, but she resolved to save the Cologne massage for later and see if she could rope Mark into helping her de-Shadow first; this was going to get expensive otherwise.

By then it was about 11:30 AM – she was much more efficient now that Natu could Teleport her places! – and on checking the map, Mina realized she could probably make it to Skybreak City before she needed to meet with Mark, so she set off.

It wasn’t until she got there at 2 PM that she realized why the older couple had wanted someone else to bring the form – there was a barricade around the city and a very long line to get in. Mina looked it over and decided with resignation that she was going to have to try getting in later.

She let the non-Shadowed Pokémon out to play for a bit instead, then did another rapid-fire Teleport-and-water spree to collect her wild plot Berries, then had Natu take her to Ceris to wait for Mark, only to find he’d beaten her there and was drawing.

Mark:

Mina appears in the lobby with her Natu on her shoulder. She spots you in short order. “Hi Mark! How are things?”

While the two of you catch up, your Pokédex brees at you.

Matt sent you a message!

((Catching up with Mina pre-message))
Mark looks up from his stress-relieving drawing when he hears Mina's voice, and he waves with his robo arm in greeting. Unable to keep from grinning when he saw her, he'd say, "Hey Mina! Doing alright outside of, you know, the bruising. De-shadowing is a bit painful it turns out, and I have no luck with Fisher's lullabies with keeping Sengar asleep. Been a bit rough because of that. Buuuuut I almost have Marick evolved, and I finally checked out trainer hill and got a few vitamins, so I've got that going for me! What have you been up to?"

((When he receives Matt's message))
Mark looked up once his phone dings, and he reads it quickly before saying, "Huh. Well, that makes things a lot easier... and makes me feel a bit silly." Showing her the text, he grumbles, "So turns out I didn't need to put so much effort into the whole deshadowing thing... though, hmmm." Tapping his chin, Mark notes, "He didn't use our system, so we can't be certain it's him... I don't think we told him about our system, did we? Ah, nuts. We should tell him about the sunshine and beautiflies and stuff."
