DF, he just wanted to know since he wants to ignore the thread if it's homophobe in its majority, since he doesn't want to waste his time, reading things that would offend him.

That's completely ok.

I mean, there is a very significant difference between fat people and gays: except in case of certain diseases, being fat is something a person can change.
Being gay, however, ignoring homophobe rants isn't closing your eyes against an unpleasant truth or something, but just an unwillingness to waste time with people who don't know better.

Answer to Nocturnal:

It's a basically good-natured thread, even though in some cases it becomes obvious that people are still influenced by the general tendencies within their respective countries and societies, but that's a rather interesting thing.

If it was that innocent, I wouldn't rant

Fat and short are just examples. Short people can't grow more, so you can use that example if it fits better.

I don't feel insecure, you should have realised that. I just have precautions. And you have to have that tendency being gay, atheist and smart in an Islamic country. That's something noone can help in this situation. Empathy please. It is a skill also very powerful in Heroes, don't forget that

Well it could be worse.  You could live in Iran.  Turkey at least has to try to appear to be reasonably tolerant, lest they piss off the rest of the EU.

Yeah that's just appearance A transvestite can be taken by arm and raped by the whole of the police officers during night and beaten up to death by them in the morning, murderers get a reduced sentence if they "say" the person they killed offered him/her homosexual sex, people still killing market owners for selling alchol during Ramazan, both the president and the prime minister of this country have wives that have turban on their heads. Let alone the movie "Brokeback Mountain" only being shown in a very few theatres, Kylie Minogue's "All The Lovers" video was banned from every TV channel here as there is a scene where two men kiss.

But yeah, everything has the potential to be worse. But I demand and deserve better

Doesn't that kill the purpose? I mean, a man raped a man... surely very heterosexual behavior
(don't start with rape=dominance not orientation thing guys... I know but irony is overwhelming)

I guess the movie "Hamam" was not very popular in Turkey then?

As a fellow intelligent, gay atheist, but living in Sweden (the no 1 gay friendly country!) i say hi to Noctunal.

Picking up the subject of pride parades from a few pages back...
The first time I saw one was the big one in Copenhagen. I was 13 and terrified. Several huge draq queens accidently surrounded me when they saw a friend and I was fairly squished in a glittery mess.

Overall, I saw it as a fairly weird and scary spectacle, even though I already knew myself that I was gay. It didn't really feel good to see that this was what "represented" me, what shaped peoples opinions on LGBT people. Young men wearing speedos and trusting upagainst poles and each other while being doused in champagne... Well now I'd probably find that a bit entertaining, but from a common perspective it's not really that nice.

I think that PRIDE and all that comes with it has a purpose. It is simply to show the opposite of shame, you don't need to be ashamed over your sexuality, nor need you be limited/punished by it. But a lot beyond that is just a silly excuse to get lots of attention. To this day, I've got friends who (besides me) know nothing of gays but that sparkly almost-naked guys on pride parades that hump everything. If acceptance is what we want and need,I doubt this is how we'll get it from those not already very willing to give it. Should there be a parade, don't turn it into a sexfrenzy.

Hello Seddy. Welcome to HC, and to the OSM in specific

Great post. I agree totally.

I used the same argument few pages ago, but was bashed by JJ because I'm heterosexual and hence "should shut up". Well, I wonder how he will answer to a gay guy rephrasing my words?

Hello Doom!

Yes I saw that, and I'm not surprised. It is easy to interpret anti-pride parade sexfrenzy into anti-LGBT. Especially when it comes from an anonymous heterosexual.

Now I'll also include an anecdote of last years pride parade in Malmö. With only 1 or two exceptions, it was a grand experience. The parade was rather fun to watch actually. It consisted not of shirtless guys humping, but of big wagons of people singing (fully clothed, normal pop songs). And there were various political parties out showing their support, open LGBT people grouped into various professions (Like lesbian police, gay doctors, etc) to show that LGBT people are all around you, functioning normally in society.

OF course, there were a few radicals in speedos and glitter, but no more than five I think... Mostly it was like a mini-festival for everyone. Quite fun actually.

And that's what I like to see. You can go full gay-glitter-speedo on TV, etc, where people choose to watch. But if you're going to appear in public, make it public-friendly. Of course, what is public friendly varies greatly. In San Francisco, speedos are probably more public friendly than here

DF, you still don't get it, do you?
It's not a question of right or wrong or tactics, and it's especially not a question of straight people telling gays how they should behave to "win the straights over".

If gays CAN legally parade, and if there are gays who want to and organize said parade, it's their right to do it - as with a demonstration:
if handicapped think, there are not enough handicapped-accessible facilities, there may be those who may want to organize a demonstration for that and against politicians not caring and so on; there may be those handicapped who do not agree with the demonstration for a lot of reasons - disagreement in general, cautiousness because the timing seems bad and so on.
But the handicapped do NOT need not-handicapped people telling them they should forego the demonstration because it may piss the not-handicapped off.

And I'm sorry for comparing gays with handicapped here, but it's a good comparison, because it's the same you are or you are not,. and if you are not you have no idea how it feels.

Wise words friend. I know homosexuality IS about sex - as the "sexuality" part hints - but exposing it on parades makes people draw wrong assumptions - that gay people are: (according to friends of my mother who commented on a gay parade that was @ Warsaw last year

- sex crazed
- interested in physical contact only
- way more promiscuous than average people
- bold, ready to strip naked on the street without any sort of shame
- incapable of deeper relationship (!)

yeah! people can jump to such unfair conclusions JUST because they have seen two men in thongs pretending to have sex on a mobile platform.

Anyone can identify themselves, and other people as well, with any group of people they want, through some arbitrary choosen common traits.
That does not mean what people of said group does is in any way representing anyone else in said group.
This is in my opinon, independent of intentions, a way that only enforces discrimination.
It actually goes back to another thread we had on these boards. It's hard to remember the exact context, but the main conclusion was that some people seemed to support the idea that if you claimed to belong to a certain group, then your actions "in the same of said group", could be used to hold the group responsible.

Hellu JJ!

It sure is everyones right to demonstrate, least it breaks some law. Whether it is the wisest decision to do it by über-sexualizing every non hetero person is another question.

Doom, as a homosexual that didn't have sex for many years, I can tell you that it is not about sex. At least, sex is not the focus per default for gay guys any more than it is for straight. With my first boyfriend, I sat on a small secluded bench in the playground at the city park. It was raining heavily and I had ridden my bike there through slushies of snow, rain and dirt, drenching me and turning me incredibly cold. For three hours, we sat there holding hands and talking as the rain poured down and I was trembling from the cold. Then we stood up and he said, after a long, shy mumbling monologue: "If you'd like to be mine, I'd like to be yours" (and yes, he said it in English)... And then I had my first real kiss.

We were together for quite a while and never did anything beyond kissing. We both wanted a relationship, not sex.

If I have the right to go get a gun when opening a bank account, surely there's a reason, a purpose for me accepting the gun?

I think there's a/several purpose/s behind the pride parades. Exactly what, is another question. And thus, I may be wrong on what is the wisest.
