So one just has to love todays surprise

My first impresions are
The aga in game. Look much better then I expected. The peral maiden lok very good, the Capa is just helerios and the tide warrior realy does have som sort of honer aura around him.

And ofcorce the Kirin. wery nice in animation and looks. It still will have to deal wit the problem that it is not suppose to be a Dragon but looks exactly like the western idea of a Chinies dragon.

The Naga tactic is realy nice, On on one combat will by interesting. it will bring interesting descisions into the batle field. for example their enemy will by able to make much more daring steps to bring the player into the hasitation to keep atacking the same enemy or to intercept the other unit.

The story if Irena is nice. My money was on a shipwrack story but an escaped bride is also nice.

The thing I like the most is Irenas Artwork. The Naga bacground and their town.

sidenoteAm I the only on that sees some similarities of Duke Gerhart of the Wolf and Markal?

next to one of the naga heroes
Could this by the Air elemental? or something else.. So much news today

And for the naga racial ability
A think the bonus could by gainf if teh player (not only the unit) is focused on one enemy unit.

@Kenishi Good eyes on the Yuki-Onna.

Well, all being said and done, naga is confirmed in the end and it got a asian theme like many of us guessed for years (I even made a town in the town contest with that inspiration and I certainly wasn't the only one).

I think that even the most skeptical posters about gameplay and especially its changes must admit that visively and musically this game has definitely qualified as a jewel this far.

Yeah that looks like an air-elemental to me, pretty cool!
About the Naga, the look great! The town is easily the most awesome of all factions, simply stunning!!!
But I don't get it concerning the spring spirit/water elemental.. they are identical?! Are we going to have two identical looking units, with different names, stats and abilities? that would be the lamest thing ever!

Hm, OK, The Sanctuary creatures look much better than expected, excellent work. The Kirin and "The Tide Warrior" in particular are exceptionally well-made and surprisingly do not seem to be pompous like the ShinY Haven troops.
The Naga concept however sounds incredibly boring and predictable. An race of honourable creatures which strive for spiritual perfection and will yet participate on a wholesale slaughter - come on, I can give you the basic background of their story already!

Or it is like I guesed, and the the glory and river spirit are considered elements and we get 2 more neutrals..

What I like about this faction is how there is elegance in its simplicity. Architecture blends in with nature, units have a natural appearance as opposed to Ledroit's overblown style. Take the 'deep nagas'(obviously not their true name), they only use paddings instead of a full body armour so as to have protection without restricting their movement, various incarnations of spirits use no armour at all, snow maidens are only dressed in a simple kimono.

The nagas are mostly about taking down enemy factions one stack at a time, starting with their strongest warrior Sounds offensive but given their support abilities and racial you'll come to realize that there is more to it than just charging and killing stuff, this is orc domain. In fact they are pretty defensive and provide teamwork.

Being spiritual and striving for beauty and perfection doesn't prevent going to war. The whole asian territory had its wars (and what wars they were) for centuries.

Actually, the developers turn out quite well-informed on the matter. The last segment of the video is entitled "The Naga Art of War", very possibly alluding to Sun-Tzu's theorical work, wich culminates in the book "The Art of War". Moreover, Sun Tzu's work revolved around limiting the enemy movement and win with minimized losses wich, still according to the developers, will be central to the Naga fighting style.

Long story short I think they hit (or rather, try to hit as I still haven't seen nagas in action) the right buttons and the overall work seems well-thought, credible and creative enough.

(I don't know if they were willingly considering asian master strategists as a source of inspiration of course, but it just looks like they are; Elvin could confirm this I think)

I've read "The art of war" (its translation actually), it's much more than that. Actually Sun Tze concentrates mainly on the strategy and not so much on the tactics, so there is no point in involving him as the strategy element in Heroes VI seems to be seriously damaged in favour of the tactics. And I seriously doubt that they had the said person's work in mind when they designed the faction (like they cared that Lilim is actually plural, that a two-headed Cerberus makes no sense even in a fictional world when you have a three-headed equivalent in another game from it and so on).
As for the idealistic image of "honourable people that commit acts of violence when necessary", it hardly becomes interesting or believable just by pointing at Japan. The honour is something pretty relative - just like everything else - and is usually related to particular space and time, but I doubt that they will emphasize this. What I expect is a focus on a generic "wise race" which preaches ambiguous but undoubtedly "deeply true" slogans to the "ignorant outsiders" and couldn't care less about their point of view. Hope I'm wrong...

Fighting honourably has nothing to do with happily slaughtering an enemy faction

Take goblins and stalkers, you can bet the nagas would hate using such tactics, preferring instead to overpower their opponents by focusing on their strengths. You may have also noticed the references in the official site, they respect their opponents. All in all you could say they were made in the image of their creator, Shalassa. Wise, humble, serene, adaptable, hesitant to take action yet swift and indomitable when they have to.

Thumbs up to Momo. Uncertain whether they have considered the Asian strategists but they certainly seem to have been somewhat influenced by them.

Now I understand, why Ubihole places both River Spirit and Ice Maiden into the Sanctuary line-up. The faction would be just far too awesome without any "disadvantages", like two (in appearance) similar units...

It is air elemental indeed. There's one more north of the castle. About Naga I liked the way their in-game models look like, with one concern the Yuki-Onna looks a lot like an air elemental and she should replace the one we seen on this screenshot IMHO!
Which is frankly speaking very boring and looks like he is making a comeback from H4!

Nothing, that's the point. But the images are way too stereotypical so far. Naga - honourable, calm, "wise", yet capable of defending itself race based on a cliche image of a Sino-civilization. Orcs - honourable, not so calm, barbaric race. The Humans and the Necromancers consider themselves honourable too, for their own reasons - usually because they think of themselves as faithful servants of Lizard of Light and Arch-Lizard of Order. Only the Demons remain - so far they are the only ones which don't give a damn about honour and hardly strive for any perfection, which makes them at least somewhat unpredictable and potentially interesting but also isolates them in a position where they are the only Others.
