Not exactly true. You need 3D moddeling tool which suppports the models from the game. Blender is mostly enough for the duty, however it may need plugins for formats as nif (niftools is a valid way of installing plugin for nif support). Now you see Blender is free and somewhat open source, while 3DS max is propertiary and expensive. So until you already have 3DS Max I believe you would want Neither paying so much nor do some copyright infringment, so you are supposed for download legally free Blender or another royalty free 3D editor which would support desired format (royalty free means that it doesn't need to be open source, as freeware or adware is enough - maybe even you want try some shareware).

Majaczek, sorry, but...?

He asked how we rip creatures from WoW and Rome games. As one who did both for a long time, I know there are only 3DS max scripts available for doing so, and those two games are NOT using NIF files. Now, if you are able to make your own script for Blender or other free 3D tools and give him, I will add to the list, until then, only 3DS max.

Sorry Salamandre, but I said "it require plugin for NIF support", so I meant that about ten popular formats are supported "out of the box". If some format is not supported "out of the box" there are probably a plugin for support it. It seems you never or only rarely use open source tools - they of course have own format, but almost always creators feel obliged to support also some popular formats from Corporative Tools. So if it isn't nif which format it is, so I can check if it support it "out of the box"?

EDIT: If you mean *.3ds files, they are supported "out of the box" via import/export section.

PS: I'm annoyed when people carelessly say "You need Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, Corel, Autocad". They either have pirated version, or waste money if they didn't need it to work in first place. There is no reason for copyright infringment or to pay thousands of dolars since there are for free: Gimp, Blender, InkScape, Brl Cad - and if you don't like these tools, they have another free tools to do this also. It seems thinking calmly, and searching rationally for better choice is here at value more than 10000$ per head. If you were a graphician and already have those paid tools - fine - but why mere modder would need to pay thousands of dollars to be able to recolor a creature?

EDIT2: I wonder if carelesly repeating "You need 3ds max" instead "you need any 3d modeling tool which support XYZ format" already counts as spam advert? I appreciate you Salamandre for another means, but why you are forcing people to paying thousands of dollars or even worse to copyright infringment if they cannot afford for 3ds max legally since there are free and fully legal alternatives? And it is not JUST Blender - there at least a few another free applications that which also would do the task.

EDIT3: I feel forced to point this wiki page once people are reluctant to search the internet for alternative. The page lists about ten free software editors PLUS about ten freeware software editors (ones you can use without paying, but without other freedoms) PLUS more than twenty corporative editors which some of may be cheaper than 3ds. If some format is perceived as standard you can be almost sure that 3rd party tools would support it.

I am not forcing anyone, just being realist. If you want to make or rip good quality creatures, you have to find a way to get expensive tools.

I understand what you are saying, but let be honest: with the free tools you have, how many creatures you made?

Did you use the files from the first post of like page 5? Also, amethyst.cfg is you forgot. It's possible, look at my mod / copy those files if you need it to work.

Hi, I have two questions: First how it should be named def unit on the map. And secondly whether someone files Crtraits, CRTRAIT0, ZCrTrait in English, because when I edit them with the wog will not turn on.

Well none YET since I'm noob with 3D graphics and setting camera and light properly may be too much for me.
There's one demo DEF to show my/free tools can do this. I understand that ready plugins for 3DS MAX make life easier but people may do the same with blender python scriptlets.
I try to be realist. Not everybody can afford for legal 3DS Max. Beeing realist I see you convince people indirectly to get pirate copy since you don't point how to do this with free AND legal tools.
Despite me not agreeing fully with current copyright law, I still prefer to not have pirate copy if same can be done with free AND legal tools.
I wish I could port the plugins for automation from 3DS scripting to Blender ones but neverthless I would need any copy of 3DS MAX to test compability so it's left for somebody acquiring it legally or not following the law.
Everything is doable in Blender now but some steps are to be taken by hand (like camera placing) to succeed.

If you already have 3DS and DEF-related macros, port them (the macros) to Blender, not be elitarist proud of buying 3DS MAX (would even 10% of us will acquire it legally?). And what if somebody bought Maya but not 3DS? Yeah there is bunch of free tools not beeing blender capable of such things, but me advising Blender is much better than you advising 3DS MAX once you don't have to pay a cent in my approach - just download and  find some disk space - and all is legal.

Separate from windows beeing the system required for most DirectX games for which you would pay anyway, almost all tasks you want could be done with free tools. Yeah GIMP doesn't have some thousands sophisticated filters from Photoshop but it still have all basic tools including gradients etc. and many special filters - it should be more than enough for amateur 2D graphics enthusiasts. Same with Blender and I choosen the one from bunch of free tools just for beeing most famous (which is important for it beeing open source - meaning it have greater codders support).

I have a will for calling you an "ass" for you forcing an elitarist way of behaviour and beeing reluctant to arguments stating you/we should became another way, but I know it would make more shame on me than on you, especially you beeing an authority here. Instead I'm trying to convince you to act as leader should because I believe it's much more productive and not so hurting. I really appreciate your person despite this, but honestly I can't agree that people have to pay many bucks for most basic actions (like just render almost ready scene) because it is really nothing like true. Just please be as fair and excelent as in other things for you were appreciated for (and it requires some change of mind and attitude here).

Except that when one asks me "how to rip", I can redirect him to two complete 3DS max ripping guides HERE and HERE in HC and answer to all his further questions. Besides long talk, you can't show him or provide a working script for Maya or Blender, thus with this mentality there would be almost no creatures available, am I right?

So what about you doing research for months, as I did to get all 3DS scripts and tutorials, then you post alternative, I don't mind and everyone will be happy.

I did all the steps from the first post,but it doesn't work.I added creatures defs,frames to avwattak.def,twcrport.def,cprsmall.def,added adventure sprites with both msg and msk files,I made the cfg files,increased the value in amethyst.cfg,added sounds.What's wrong with it.Tried with both Era and simple WoG,the same result:I get errors when putting them in line-ups or trying adding them directly in hero's slots,some Erm error with "wrong monster command".

Did you try DLing my town and replacing the files with your files? It does work, trust me, but without looking at your setup it's hard to say.  What if you put the creature on the map and attack it? Does that work?

Yes,I downloaded your town and looked at the creatures section,I didn't try putting the creature on map though.I think there may be also problems with the creatures native faction as I didn't use the MA:O command.

I can upload the files if it helps(it's a mod file for Era 2)

Try adding both MA and MA:L commands before uploading. I remember having to need MA:L even when I thought I did not.
