Eurovision 2012

Since all songs have been selected for over a week now, so I don't think we need to tarry any longer to create the thread

I have yet to listen to all of the songs... but man, this competition is a lot better than last year's. The difference is downright *SHOCKING*

Last year there were only a handfull songs I really liked (Germany, Latvia, Bosnia, Serbia, France... and that's it?), combined with tons of awful eurotrash (Erik Saade, JEDWARD) and other unfunny/awful extravaganza (The entries of Moldova, Armenia and Belgium, among others)

This year however, I am confident we're in for another great contest, with delicious OTT gimmicks and a good portion of palatable chansons.

I have to compliment Sweden, Xerox. After the DISASTER that was Erik Marquis de Saade, they selected a DIVINE entry, probably my favorite of the bunch. I'm also enamored with Italy, Hungary and Russia so far. Even Belgium's entry isn't half as bad I feared it would be.

The only really bad entries are Georgia (abhorrent, and it's even worse when you realize it'll finish in the TOP15 because it's GEORGIA) and Austria (which makes me want to put their a$$es in the eye!).

Overall, you can colour me excited and optimistic about this year's comp.

Which song won from Sweden? I only saw one of their semis, had pretty high levels. Denmark as usual* voted the good songs out and past on a completely forgettable one.

*Ok to be fair, I actually think our entry last year was very good.

My personal first impressions (in the order which they'll preform in)

SEMI 1

Montenegro - Lol, it's terrible.... but also kinda lol? I don't except it to make the finals, and I'm with it being a semifinal curiosum. If it does well however (ie: slays some of my favorites in the semi), I reserve right to passionately hate it.

Iceland - Awesome entry. Jonsi entered before in 2004 (the edition that got me hooked on Eurovision - eventhough it's probably the weakest of the 2000s) and was offensively boring. This time however, he struck gold. I'll be rooting for Iceland to get a TOP10 finish which they deserve and will -unfortunately- be robbed off in all likelyhood.

Greece - A typical run-the-mill entry for Greece at first sight, but imho it is much better than what they usually send. I wouldn't mind seeing this place high (which it'll inevitably do due to being greek :eyeroll: )

Latvia - It's ok-to-good. Definitely not a favourite of mine, but it's pleasant to listen to.

Albania - Yet another pleasant, but nothing special song. As a song it depends REALLY hard on the singer's voice, and I'm always apprehensive of these, since they are hit-or-miss.

Romania - I like this. Very tropical, happy-go-lucky and it's sung in SPANISH for the most part. Definitely going to do well, and I endorse it.

Switserland - This one is good also. It stands out because it has an inviting beat and is just overall catchy. One of my favorites this year.

Belgium - I like how we actually managed to send a song I like pre-show. (Tom Dice doesn't count - I only liked him after the live shows). Given how good the competition is this year, I'm sceptical about our chances to do well. But I like this ballad. It's not boring, and gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it. Go Belgium!

Finland - Finland's ballad is actually even better than Belgium's imo.  I find it a very adorable and captivating song, and Swedish is a language I find to be :ethereal-sounding:. A smart choice for Finland. I hope she does well.

Israel - lol. Fodder if there ever was one. It's ok and unique sounding on it's own, but given the abundance of GOOD songs in the first semifinal I hope it does terribly. I also don't really like how it tries to "make" itself appear quirky.

San Marino - MORE FODDER. Failbook.org in Eurovision form Even the fodder delivers to an extend this year, given that they are HILARIOUSLY bad and have no shot at qualifying over the really good entries <3

Cyprus - It sounds good... but It's so meh in comparisson to the rest. I don't really care for it myself :-/ I would have liked this if the competition were weaker though.

Denmark - Very accessible teenage pop. Some people might not like it because it's SO mainstream ( :eyeroll: ), but I like it. Again, not a really big favorite of mine, but it's pleasant.

Russia - Gimmicks are mostly a miss to me, but GRANNIES <3<3<3 Everything about this entry is lol, and since it'll inevitably do well, I'm embracing it as the token lol entry to make the TOP5. I only hope none of them die before being sent to Baku.

Hungary - Hungary's song is unbelievably awesome and a TOP2 entry for this year for me. I love everything about it: the music, the singning, the lyrics, EVERYTHING. I've also seen a live performance to ensure it'll deliver in Baku (since last year's entry for Hungary was marred by its terrible life-performance)... and it will. I'm confident it'll rank high, like it deserves.

Austria - From one of the BEST entries, to one of the worst. Austria's entry is sobad I couldn't sit through the first hearing. Even after taking a five minute break and FORCING myself to listen to it for completion's sake, I *still* had great difficulties. At least it's going to slayed in the semis. Hopefully with 0 points.

Moldova - Given that Moldova is sandwhiched with Romania in the semifinals, it's a given both will qualify due to their mutual 12 points exchange. It's funny that both countries also entered with SIMILAR songs. Moldova's entry is more Balkanesque... but also less strong than Romania's. I hope it somehow doesn't make the finals. The alternative would be losing one of Belgium/Denmark/Finland, which is UNACCEPTABLE.

Ireland - *sigh* Jedwardmania is probably the most obnoxious thing ever, and it was fun for one edition, but I'm not looking foward to the encore. Unfortunately, Jedward's song is actually decent this time around (although nothing stellar). I'll be rooting against their success.... but let's face it, they are guaranteed a TOP5 finish at worst.

SEMI 2

Serbia - Zheljko entered Eurvivion before (in 2004), and like the last time it's with a ballad. He's an accomplished singer and the choice to use a classical orchestra to record the music was very smart. There's something missing for me though... so it's just aight for me.

F.Y.R. Macedonia - Slavic Screetching harpies <3 The song itself has a nice crescendo to it: it starts VERY slowly and had a good finale. It could have used a bit more spice, but I like it

Netherlands - I'm not a big fan of this, but it's cosy, homely and pleasant. I think I can best describe it as a "campfire song". I don't understand this "native american" theme though. It reeks unnecessary gimmick to me.

Malta - this song has many accessible pop songs, and Malta is one of the weaker ones in the bunch. I think the chorus is... really weak and mechanical? Idk. I feel it could have been a MUCH stronger song (especially because the parts outside of the chorus are actually quite good). Overall, I care little for it.

Belarus - "We are the winners" is a pretty ballsy statement, and I don't think Belarus will pull it off. As good as the song sounds in studio form, it's really weak live. Boysbands singing mediocrily in coalminer's english is not really my definition of "enjoyable". I'll like them if their singing improves. So far however... I don't

Portugal - It just bores me. Sorry Portugal.

Ukraine - It sounds really familiar to me for some reason. (plagiarism?). I like it though. Gaitana has a STRONG voice which compliments the fancy beat. Not a favorite of mine though.

Bulgaria - it...sucks. I'm -due to my heritage- willing to give Bulgaria a free pass most of the time... but this song just sucks. Voda remaining the best scoring Bulgarian song ever <3

Slovenia - Slovenia's entry is actually adorable and cute... but unfortunately it is also highly unmemorable. I've already forgotten most about it. Most slavic songs being so interchangeable </3. I like this one the best of the slavic ballads in this semi, I guess.

Croatia - Yet another interchangeable slavic ballad. Semi final 2 is weaker than the first one so far. I think the overload of slavic countries, each with their marginally interchangeable ballad make this contest relatively boring (meaning it'll ALL depend on the act whether I'll like it or not).

Sweden - Oh.GOD. After a host of average songs, we get THIS... I don't think words are needed. Euphoria is a GODLY song, sung by probably the best singer of this year's competition... It's great from start to finish. It's also a very obvious winner, but I'm so ready to embrace and celebrate Sweden's 5th win. (or Hungary's first).

Sidenote: I hope 2012 is the year of the obvious kick-ass fembot winner (it'll become a worldwide a trend if Alisha or Sophie wins ANTM, Rachel/Brendon win TAR and Kim wins Survivor like I think they will. Raj Rani already won Survivor India, so...)

Georgia - How quality can change in literally less than 30 seconds. Georgia's song is.... clichématic, boring, mechanic, been there, incoherent and just plain terrible. I think it's funny that the best song in both semi final is followed by the WORST. Just listen to this shizznitt and try not to disagree with the previous sentense. You'll find it impossible.

Turkey - this entry is pretty mechanical for Turkey. It does NOTHING to me, but I can understand people liking it... it'll probably qualify for the finals and finish high by default ( :eyeroll: ), but I hope it doesn't, given there are better songs to give a TOP5 spot for (like  half of the first semi's song)

Estonia - BALLAD OVERLOAD. This time, sung by a baltic guy instead of a ravishing balkan babe. Still too much of it in one semi final. I like this song thought. I don't understand a single word of it, but It still manages to captivate my attention and listen to it. Singing in Estonian rather than Engish is a VERY smart move for Estonia. One of the stronger ballads and I hope it qualifies for the final.

Slovakia - Slovakia never does well... and I hope that trend is broken this year. A good rock song in a ballad-INFESTED semifinal should do the trick. I'll be rooting for Slovakia this year, that's for sure.

Norway - Blah. Electropop doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. If I decide to be hipster I could  say this is too mainstream to me (this while I'm actually a mainstreamhound lol <3). Anyway, I don't like, nor don't care about this song... but it's not bad either.

Bosnia & Herzegovina - Yet.another.balkan.ballad. DOES THIS EVER END? It's also methiculously boring.

Lithuania - "Love is blind" ::wears blindfolds::. Just lol. Pity he removes them after the first chorus. ... The song itself is also BORING though.

K the second semifinal is DULL and infested with ballads, but eh, some of them have their merits. The first semi <3 tho.

BIG 5 + AZERBAIJAN

United Kingdom - Engelol. The UK choosing an ANCIENT balladist to represent them <3 Engelbert's song is also one of the better ballads though. It's NOT boring, which is a huge plus. It's also memorable and  adorable. The only problem is that it is... VERY old-fashioned. I think this song could win (or finish second) in the 70s or so... but in the 2010s it'll be lower TOP10 I think. Not that bad.

France - I love this. It's memorable, unique (in a good way), and sung really well. I LOVE how France is willing to send a song that is for like 70% in English.

Italy - OMG. Italy's song last year was average... but this... is SO.GOOD. Picking between this, Hungary and Sweden for my favorite entry is picking between your own children. It's so good it's CRUEL to root for it over Sweden or Hungary :-/. If Sweden/HUngary/Italy are the TOP3 for this year (like they should be) I'll ORGASM. (best F3 ever.ia)

Azerbaijan - A typical Azerbaijan entry. It's a solid ok and does litter other than "sound good". Been here, done that. When do we get something... Special from Azerbaijan? That would have been cool.

Spain - Yet another STRONG ballad from a BIG5 member. I'm impressed. Usually, the Big4 don't send songs that are this good... I can only assime it is Italy's benign influence <3

Germany - It sounds like something you'd hear on the radio. It makes it very relatable, accessible... but also very run-the-mill. I do not care for this. I like Taken by A Stranger a LOT better. (ps: Taken By A Stranger is in my TOP10 non-winning Eurovision songs ever. Haterz gonna hate ^__^)

I didn't like it though, and I'm fully aware I'm one of the few who didn't. I just thought New Tomorrow was a really pretentious, belittling song which acted as if the audience were little children who don't know crap. It's not really fun, I get enough of that irl; I don't NEED it in Eurovision.

The whole thing has a pretty good idea with abominable results (rare exceptions). As for my country (Bulgaria), we have a reputation for selecting the worst songs for the actual competition but this year the claimants (those who I checked at least) looked like they were deliberately doing their best to sound disgusting, not to mention that half of them are talentless my-boy-with-the-thick-neck-paid-for-my-career twats and didn't have to try hard. That's hardly surprising though, the good Bulgarian music is nowhere to be found more than 10 years now...

I'm loving Russia's entry this year. if you watch the eurovision.tv video clip you cannot help but love them.

What I love most is the utter CONSTERNATION of the audience to the Babooshkas. Women on the middle row are DYING with laughter, the judges look like they want to die and somewhere in front there's this dude sitting there with this look in his face for about five seconds straight:

And after it's over they get a standing ovation too. GRANNIEOWNAGE!

Probably those old ladies learned music several weeks ago while washing dishes for drunk husbands, no way.

Similar concept, but much better music and interpretation.

I can actually say that I genuinely like our entry this year.

I like how it's just her on stage without any overly annoying special effects and ****.

It's almost something a bit Kung Fu-ish about the choreography, and ends with a guy doing something reminding of Capoeria. Pretty cool imo.

Well you're obviously right, but that's what makes them funny. They can't sing, and they can't dance. If they could do either, they would just have been another boring traditional entry that would never stand a chance, but as they are, they are hillarious because of the WTF factor. As for our entry... it does not stand a chance. The song is boring. She is trying to sing in few languages with this major accent...

I think the Eurovision is crap because of all the politics involved in it which never used to be involved and should not be involved. Saying this, I'd very much like Engleburt Humpledink to win. A 70+ year old man who was huge in the 60s to win it would be ****ing magical for him and for the United Kingdom. I doubt he'll win though because, like I said, it's all politics and nobody will really vote for the UK because not many like the country. Blergh.
