2006, 2008, 2009 and 2011 were the only missers imo (and Moldova were only okay in 2008/2009). Outside of that, yes, they're great.

10. Armenia
Aram MP3 - "Not Alone"
Semi 1 - Slot #1

THAT CRESCENDO. THAT DUBSTEP. YES GIVE ME MORE.

Again, simplicity just works somethimes and this is one of those cases. I sit here, serene and tranquil, with my headphones plugged in and I listen to this song... AND I GET GOOSEBUMPS. EACH TIME. WITHOUT FAIL.

The things that separate really good songs from bland $#^! are the stimuli that comes with the really good songs. You want to sing along, dance along, get goosebumps, etc. And this is what this song does for me.

Unlike Moldova, I also feel the dubstep serves a purpose: It sends a shiver down my spine whenever the climax comes.

The main reason why Armenia isn't higher is:

1) The crescendo, while amazing, lasts WAY too long. I LOVE the climaxy bit of the song and I wish we got more of that.
2) The intensity of this song will be difficult, if not impossible to replicate on stage in Copenhagen. Aram will preform it alone with no backing singers either, and while he's a skilled live performer, I doubt he'll live up to the standard Armenia is setting for themselves this year.

Chances: Good

Aram is the favourite to win. Or is he? Aram leads the betting odds, but I question whether this is validly reflects his chances or is just an example of Aramania.

Let me elaborate by posting a screencap of a comment I made in the official vid:

12 thumbs up may seem a lot, buuuuuuuuut.... I checked who gave my comment thumbs up and like... all of them are Armenians. I don't know what it is, but Armenians are NUTS. They are perhaps the most patriotic people on the planet, and with countries like the US running about that says a goddamn' much.

Allegedly, most of the bets placed with the bookmakers for Armenia also come from ARMENIANS. Yes, these nutcases have been betting for their own entry SO intensely that they distorted the betting odds in their favour

While this explains their low odds/high chances, for the reasons i mentioned earlier, I doubt Aram will take it home for Armenia this year. The specific feel of this song is too difficult to replicate properly on stage for it to work properly. The way I see it, Armenia won't even win their own Semi Final.

That being said, this is still Armenia we're talking about. Aside from their disconcerningly loyal diasporiae, Armenia benefits from being an Ex-Soviet Nation. They will get points. Lots of them. They WILL finish in the top 10. Maybe even higher. But will they win? I honestly doubt it.

9. Finland
Softengine - "Something Better"
Semi 2 - Slot #8

A group of vibrant, energetic younglings singing an uptempo, U2-inspired pop rock song with overbearing chanting and screaming? YES, give me more.

This entry has everything A Friend In London was said to have: It's catchy rock with an accessible, infectuous beat, inspired (bordering on hilariously dysfunctional) lyrics and epic chants. God, the chants. To top it all off, Something Better is unpretentious and fresh. Did I say I LOVE the chanting?

Obviously, Softengine weren't my FAVOURITES from UMK (the Finish National Selection), because these amazing wymyn exist:

This might legitimately be my favourite song of 2014 so far <3

But at the end of the day, I'm glad they were selected over MIAU. Something Better definitely has a more wide appeal than God/Drug would have had, and Finland is one of the countries I ALWAYS want to see do well. Especially considering the uphill battle they face, for just being Finland.

Chances - Average

It's Finland and Finland are BULLIED at Eurovision. Always have been and still are now. Softengine's home country and rather unfortunate draw (smack dab in the middle), might hold them down. However, their song is memorable AND the only rock song in the entire semi. I have them pegged as qualifiers as of right now, even in a semi as competitive and unpredictable as the second one.

If Finland makes the finale, I think they might do better than Krista did last year, but I don't have high expectations. I would say... 16th or something, if they qualify. They would deserve higher (i'd argue: top 10 ), but alas, being from Finland puts them at a rather unfortunate disadvantage they wouldn't have been otherwise.

Softengine is pretty good but it's so, so forgettable. There's nothing memorable about it. One of those songs that come up on the recap and you go, huh? Forgot all about them.
It's just run of the mill softrock.

Yeah, MIAU is so much goodness

1. Estonia
Sandra Nurmsalu - "Kui Tuuled Pöörduvad"
Semi 1 - Slot #3

YESSSSSS!!!! AMAZING SONG!!! THIS IS PERFECTION!!! SO CUTE AND THE RAFT OMG... SURELY NOTHING STANDS IN THE WAY OF #TALINN2015, right???

oh wait, the Eesti Laul Judges sabotaged her for no reason. Screw you, Eesti Laul.

8. Estonia
Tanja - "Amazing"
Semi 1 - Slot #3

Or not? Granted, "Amazing" is not a "Kui Tuuled Pöörduvad", but it's still a great entry itself? Catchy dance songs <3 I've come to the point where I don't really care that much that Sandra lost Eesti Laul because Tanja turned out to be a very worthy alternative.

Of course, people already HATE Amazing for being "an Euphoria Rip-Off" and *sigh* at all of that, really. Yes, it's the same genre and it has a dance routine... that's it? Bear in mind that these haters are the SAME people who accused Emmelie de Forest of plagiarism while simultaneously loving Cascada (O__O).

As for the song itself: It's great, it's polished and it's fun. Tanja doesn't get enough credit for her live singing capabilities. While not perfect, you try singing in tune when you're hurled around the stage like this:

GODDESS. I mean... this is more impressive than Loreen, actually? Loreen sang and danced at the same time, but this is bloody BALLET. Very impressive, imo <3

Also the song is about deluding yourself into unattainable romance. bonus points. <3

Chances- Good

People say this won't qualify and I'm just gobsmacked by that sentiment. 1) Tanja is an ethnic Russian in a Soviet-Dominated semi. 2) She's from Estonia, a country that is generally beloved at Eurovision. 3) she's £µ€|<ing awesome. 4) Get a life.

I'll eat my hat if she doesn't qualify.

No, the true challenge is predicting how well Tanja would do in the finale. This song can finish in the top 5. This song could also finish 23rd. This year is so all over the damn' place it's impossible to predict how well Tanja would do. The only thing that I am certain of is that I love this entry with all my heart and want this Amazing Lie to Stay forever.

I like that this thread is rated as "important" in the Tavern main page.

Overall it's good songs (at least those who qualified) on this page so far in all aspects - they're perfect radio hits!

... which means that they're good in the moment but the effect doesn't last. Only Tanja is remembered for a while as her coreography is almost as great as Loreen's,.

Armenia and Finland reminds me of Coldplay's two faces, the melancolic (overdramatic whining and strings) modern ballad and the positive (whoo-oh-hoo-ho!) modern rocker. These aren't bad songs but they fail to use their epic ingredients with style. Armenia has too much crescendo and too little of the other ingredients, while Finland has no crescendo. While the whole Viva la Vida is a well balanced crescendo constructed to make the corny whoo-oh-hoo-ho! sing-along starting at 2.59 (i.e. not possible in ESC) feel natural.

Still awful though! (because that changes nothing about her whiny vocals or offensively boring/boringly offensive light cage act/pantsuit outfit.)
Maybe the treatment against SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) doesn't work because the whole light therapy room is inspired by something as uplifting as Stranger Danger.

Yes, our autocratic general producer of the Melodifestival Christer Björkman told the nation on prime time TV (in the ESC preview show) that Sanna Nielsen's show is inspired by/copied from Lena Meyer-Landrut's.

7. Israel
Mei Feingold - "Same Heart"
Semi 2 - Slot #2

So real. So fierce. So Mei Feingold <3

I'm really excited Israel is good again. The last time they were this good was in... 2005? I guess? When was the last time we were treated to a good uptempo Israeli entry? 1998? Maybe even earlier? 1991? 1985? Dear, god. We really need this.

Needless to say, I'm incredibly thrilled that Israel seemingly went back to their roots: unique-sounding, rhythmic pop songs with a well thought out of act. While there's is no official confirmation of how Same Heart will be staged, the video suggest a neat choreography, something Israel excelss at. Same Heart feels like a throwback to the Israeli glory days in the early eights, with a modern, interesting spin to it. I'm HOOKED.

Same Heart also gets bonus points for being a fairly unconventional song for this contest:

1. It's really hostile and vengeful <3 As I said in Moldova's write-up, it's a nice change of pace from all the songs that sing about love or social issues. Not Same Heart. Revenge, baby, it's all about revenge.

2. The melody is fairly unique. I can't think of a song that sounds similar to Same Heart, especially in a Eurovision context. Yeah, definitely bonus points for creativity from me.

3. Mei Feingold is a Queen. Like... just look how much PERSONALITY she radiates from just a 3 minute clip. It's very hard to not fall in love with Same Heart especially because of Mei's videoclip performance. There are so many great moments in that video clip alone. (e.g.: 2:03 "AND now it's time for me to open my eyes and recognize we don't beat from the same heartttt" *bulges her eyes in unison with the lyrics*)

I just cannot wait to see this in action. I just can't. She's awesome.

Chances- Goodish

Being in a competitive semi while simultaneously being the second to perform (a notorious death slot) is possibly the worst draw one might have, but even then I think Israel will qualify effortlessly. Mei is a good live singer, the song is fantastic and Israel are very skilled in staging their acts with care and precision.

In the finale however, Same Heart is perhaps the biggest wildcard. Mei could easily finish in the top five, but with many other songs with similar odds, it's hard to predict how well she would actually do. Regardless, even if Mei were to finish in the second half of the finale or worse, outside of the finale, I know in my heart that she won't disappoint me. And that is a prospect I gladly look forward to.

6. Hungary
Andrįs Kįllay-Saunders - "Running"
Semi 1 - Slot #16

Wow. Child Abuse? Isn't this a subject one might consider too dark for Eurovision? Nope, it's not, not in mine nor in Hungary's opinion. For good reason. Running is an AMAZING song, and the fact that it has such a confrontational and unsettling theme only makes it more GRIPING.

Things Running has going for it include:

1. Good Vocals. Andrįs is definitely capable of singing Running in tune and his mostly melancholic, high-pitched voice enhances the song's inherent sadness. It gives so much credibility to the song. His only (minor) issue is his enunciation. He sang "Forrelp" instead of "For Help" during the Hungarian NF and it annoyed me lol.

2. Great Staging. Shall I just post the live vid here:

because if that's going to be how their act in Copenhagen, I'm defo on board.

3. The Theme and the Song have a perfect synergy together: Again, Child Abuse is not an easy subject to sing about without trivializing it or becoming a preachy social justice warrior nobody wants to listen to. This entry however NAILS the atmosphere of abuse, imo. The verses are threatening, the chorus frantic and full of momentum, the breaks melancholic. The lyrics are direct and sharp.

From second one, the tone that this song is supposed to set is set and it only gets better.

Chances: High

Armenia's unrealistically high chances be damn'ed - Hungary wins the first semi final, without a doubt. Their draw (they preform last) only cements this.

In the finale, eh... EVERYTHING would depend on the draw. If Hungary draws early, they will do well but... they wouldn't win. They could even not make the top five.

If Hungary Draws a slot near the end, if not the very last slot, they could seriously win. At the very least tie Frederika's record of 4th.

Do I think that they will win? No. Another act is my predicted winner (and yes, it's one of my top five ), but Running is a close second contender for me, as long as Andras sings in tune.

Sadly, and I hate to be making this point, but a Person Of Colour has NEVER won Eurovision before (actually it took us until Loreen to get a winner of non-european descent (I'm counting Azerbaijan and Israel as europe for the sake of this argument)) and while I would love to see the trend broken this year... i don't think it will be

Nice analysis, good thinking, and I agree - but Running is a boring song where only the instrumental part before the first chorus is cool, and Same Heart is actually a very typical entry (up-tempo, repetition of epic chorus & change of key towards the end) styled to be a sequel to Bad Romance. None of them are winners but I'm surprised that Same Heart works as well as it does.

+ it's a strange coincidence that your top 5 is the same 5 songs I haven't heard yet on TV, radio or elsewhere.

5. Latvia
Aarzemnieki - "Cake To Bake"
Semi 1 - Slot #2

"UGH. THIS ENTRY ISN'T SERIOUS. LATVIA SHOULD HAVE WHEN WITH A BORING BALLAD INSTEAD. RETARDS. THEY'LL NEVER WIN THE CONTEST, THIS WAY ::SMUGFACE::"

No. NO! I will not have this rationale taint eurovision. £µē|< that noise.

Ugh. Latvia finds itself near the bottom in the majority of the preshow lists you'll find (usually second last to Georgia, lol.) and I can't express how heinous I find this. Sure, this entry isn't to be taken seriously but... that's the point? It's about CAKE. Can we not like cake anymore? What's next? People hating kittens and ice cream? Preposterous!

*I* was an Aarzemnieki partizan from the first hour and still own up to my stripes. I was elated when they won EuroDziesma. And if we look at it, is this song bad? The honest answer is no: it's not. It's simple and childish (but not to its detriment), but at the same time really adorable and disarming, so who cares? it's a campfire song. STOP TAKING THIS CONTEST SERIOUSLY, PEOPLE. Eurovision is supposed to be fun and good, and "Cake To Bake" is BOTH

Here are the top 3 reasons to love Cake To Bake:

1) Aarzemnieki are awesome people, as shown by these vids

So adorable, so harmless, so fun. SO AARZEMNIEKI. They're such misunderstood angels. Seriously, how can you hate these people? You'd have to be heartless. (I consider Joran to be a spirit animal of mine, so you better beware what you write in the comment box below, yw)

2) The lyrics. SO MANY POP CULTURE REFERENCES.

Sherlock Holmes <3
Indiana Jones <3
Isaac Newton <3
That one line where he's like "[£µē|<!ł§ Hell Yeah], I even learned Latvian ... i know, it's so hard to believe " has me in stiches, lol.

3) They saved us from this thing!!

Meh. I doubt anyone was waiting for a boring ballad sung in Latvian by a Judge Claude Frollo Look-A-Like. This BREAKS the first two rules of Eurovision. 1) "Don't be ugly" and 2) "Don't Be Boring". Yet people loved it for some reason because it represented Latvian culture? Ack.

To be fair, Aarzemnieki were only my second favourite act from Dziesma, as this hilarious old lady exists:

So ridiculously silly <33333333333333

buuuut Olga didn't make the superfinale (despite being the second favourite, after Dons the dullard ), However Aarzemnieki did and won it, by about 200 votes () and all was good in the world.

Aarzemnieki themselves were completely BLINDSIDED by their victory, as were I, Latvia and the rest of Europe. A group called "Foreigners" winning an edition of Dziesma that had "Made In Latvia" as its subtite was just too good to miss.

Most people hate "Cake To Bake". I don't. I'm just excited that Latvia FINALLY sent in an entry that I love and can support in Eurovision. Yes, you can't take it seriously, but that because it isn't meant to be. Open your heart and enjoy the show. Latvia usually ARE one of the worst countries in Eurovision, so who knows what they'll throw as us next year. Cherish the moment when you can, I'd say.

And to end: Aarzemnieki's reaction to winning set to my favourite part of the song:

MIX SOME DOUGH

ADD SOME LOVE

LET IT BAKE

HAVE SOME CAKE

I love you Latvia <3 GARSIGI!

Chances: lol, not a chance. Latvia was already dead way before they drew The Death Slot in their semi. At least there won't be any awful, evening-ruining meltdowns that would have happened if Dons was selected with like... the seventh (or is it eighth? Good grief X_X) ballad of the evening and of course failed to qualify.

Same here, I just had to take up the challenge to find out what the incomprehensible ej tu nost means, which was easier said than done.

Google translate couldn't translate it since the words are too similar to some Swedish words but my effort was nevertheless rewarded:

Google said:

I've got a cake to bake – I’ve got no clue at all (cep, cep, cep, cep, cep kuuku)

Jag har en kaka att baka - Jag har ingen aning alls (CEP, Karl-Johansvamp, Karl-Johansvamp, Karl-Johansvamp, cep kuuku)

This is a Karl-Johansvamp (Boletus Edulis):

The investigation continues...

RCHV Ej tu nost - This is also incomprehensible!

Sabīne propogandē Ej tu nost - Obviously it's useful in every situation...

Finally, I found it...

4. Norway
Carl Espen - "Silent Storm"
Semi 2 - Slot #3

So, as we got one insipid nordic entry after the other (first pollapönk, then undo and finally, scooby doo), all hope rested on NORWAY to provide Scandinavia with some worthy representation. Norway's Melodi Gran Prix was, by far, the best national selection this year, so I eagerly anticipated the results. As it happened, my favourite song in the entire selection won: Silent Storm.

As this ranking made painfully clear, slow ballads are not my cup of tea, at all. Silent Storm however, just works. Most of ballads this year are insipid and boring. Not this one. There's a certain sadness, a certain melancholy in Carl's voice that makes this song about unspeakable sadness tickle the strings of my heart.

This entry has the most important quality i look for in demure, modest ballads that most others in eurovision seem to lack: Sincerity. I BELIEVE there's a silent storm brewing in Carl Espen, I believe that he's at his wits' end and I believe that he's about to drown in his inner vortex.

Like Running and Wild Soul, this isn't a song for the faint of hearted. This song eschews any form of optimism or happy endings. It BITES. and in a contest where most of your entries are either upbeat or full of grandeur, that makes for a very nice change of pace.

I quite like Carl's rough look. He looks like he walked straight off the set of Prison Break or smth <3 It creates another layer of mystery around this entry imo. WHO IS THIS PERSON? IS HE AN EX-CON? WHY IS HE SO FATALISTIC? WHAT SECRETS IS HE HIDING???? idk idk. so much potential backstory <3

Norway is tipped among the plausible winners and if it were up to me, I'm totally okay with them grabbing it.

Chances - good

Norway is one of only three guaranteed locks from semi 2 (along with Austria and Romania) and if I had to guess, they will win the second semi with bare ease.

Do they win though? Hmm... Betting odds are pretty favourable, but I'd say "no". Not this year and not with this song. Ballads like these haven't won since the... 70s? lol. They don't win in the modern era of eurovision, for sure. Besides, Silent Storm is uncharacteristically dark for a ballad and i doubt such a song COULD win Eurovision.

There's no doubt that Norway will finish in the top 10, but they could occupy any slot between 2nd and 10th, imo. But winning? nah.

3. Italy
Emma Marrone - "La Mia Cittį"
Finale

This may come unexpectedly, especially in the light of the Italian entry placing third in my preshow rankings, but... Italy is one of my least favourite nations in Eurovision. They're snobistic and consider themselves better than the contest. They've also pelted ESC with immensely boring ballads in the past, both distant and not so distant (l'Essenziale :-/ Madness of Love :-/).

So when Italy revealed THIS as the entry, I was positively shocked. This is the FIRST time in their history of Eurovision where Italy strays off the San Remonese paths of safe polished pop and ballads, on to the path of poprock. Instantly, i was hooked.

I loved La Mia Citta from the get-go and it hasn't exited my top three ever since. This is my FAVOURITE song this year. It has everything I want in a song: it's vibrant, it's dynamic, it has compelling percussion, it has a certain rawness to it that even the autotune cannot cover up <3 I love it. The Chorus is particularly powerful.

Then, there's Emma. Just look at her and remember what I said about Mei a few updates back. Emma is just a fierce, confident woman who manages to put a LOT of personality in just three minutes of official video (ps: her minnie mouse costume <3 please wear that in Copenhagen). She is a gifted performer (She performed La Mia Citta live during the German National Final) and a trueborn entertainer. All prospects I'm excited for.

Italy only ranks third for two reasons.

1) Emma is a great performer but she is sadly not as accomplished a singer. Like Nina Zilli before her, Emma is probably not going to be vocally impressive, which is a pity because this IS my favourite song.

2) As such, Italy is unlikely to win the contest this year. Spain and the UK stand out as slightly more epic and winnery to me, so I'm more excited for them. Somebody needs to slay the top contender demons of Sweden and Denmark this year, and it is unlikely that it will be Emma who does it.

Chances - Good

It's... Italy. Italy hardly ever does poorly at this contest, due to their canzonissima culture and the respect that international juries/audiences alike have for them. Because of this, it's unlikely Italy places outside of the top ten (I mean if they didn't with Nina, I strongly doubt they will with Emma, who is superior in every field),

Besides, Emma is an entertaining, memorable performer and if she DOES sing well, she might even threaten the position of Armenia/Norway/Sweden as the favourites to win.

@ Locksley: well, in my opinion stuff like "what does the fox say" and that one hit chink wonde gangnam style is liked because people are getting dumber and dumber by the hour.

By the way, I agree with Lexxan's opinion on this year's Lithuanian entry to the contest.
out of that bunch of half wit retards which competed, Vilija is the best.
She has a great voice and some amounts of charm, my only problem with her is that she was made famous from a show which was a mix of Big Brother and X Factor.

but nothing beats vy a ze vyners av jurovizn! Honestly.
