It's been way too long without an update on the official site i think.... And january is almost over...

The official site (or blog) is no more #1. All activity moved to Steam forums. The mmh7 site was left unfinished as the game itself. There are still "to be revealed" parts or even non-functional sections like Media and Community.

At least gomaki is active and responding Which reminds me he got something interesting for us from the tuesday`s meeting, right?

That site outlived its usefulness the moment the game hit the shelves. It was their method of promoting and showcasing the product prior to release. People made up their mind to buy the game and after the initial frenzy was over things just started to die off. The hope-boosted one-sided view they hand fed the community with was no more, because the game was out, many negative reviews got posted and dissatisfaction started pilling up to the point the vast majority lost interest. Cash-ins became abysmal, first sale had a staggering 50% discount right off the bat, and now rumored heavy changes speak volumes about their panicked attempt at damage control, all for the sake of building up some confidence to squeeze out the last possible revenue out of the remaining gullible pockets before the ship finally hits the seabed. And when you understand these things from this perspective you'll naturally arrive at the conclusion that even they don't believe further Shadow Council propaganda would cut it.

Regarding a vision how to evolve the gameplay, here is my current plan. First, I like to introduce a worldstate. It defines who owns which province on a worldmap and the strategic resources and assets. In effect it provides you a choice of various missions (the equivalent of current playable maps) from the worldmap, and many interesting things can be done by having worldmap variables affect the mission setup.

Could you open that up a bit more a perhaps give an example from other games? It sounds a bit like how LoTR battle for middle earth II Rise of Witch-King had this strategy-board/map where clashing armies would fight for territory which would become the battle map. Or C&C 3 tiberium wars had domination mode in spirit of "Risk" (boardgame).

If it is something like those two I'm loving the idea.

Yes!

Sure

Busy working on the final part of the AI. Once that is done, I will focus on how to deliver more information about what will come with Heroes of the Ancient Order and set up a proper project website.

That would be something. But I guess for that to happen the community will need to come out in force and petition Ubisoft big time. Seeing how the community has scattered this will definitely require a lot more convincing, particularly regarding which parts need fixing and presenting a clear vision of the resulting game's strengths. Still, an overhauled Heroes IV in HD would be something to behold.

I'm quite sure owning provinces with their strategical resources and assets is pretty much area of control at its core.

The territories you own are on the *world map*. The examples TD mentioned give you an idea how that works.

Clicking on a territory lets you select a mission that is played out on an adventure map (the maps that we currently have in H5).

Emperor: Battle for Dune had the same concept for their Campaign. It bought a strategic element even into selecting the next mission, and added re-playability value to the game. So I think it sounds like a good idea.

However I'm not so keen on a HD remake of H4, and I don't know of many who would be...

If we would ever get a H4 remake you can bet your ass that it will be made by some tiny studio who mainly develop mobile games.

Because Ubisoft would never dare to throw money on the dying Heroes franchise.

A franchise which was not dying at the time they bought it (speaking about its popularity), they admitted themselves they were positively surprised by the sales of H5 they never thought would be that good, even though they lost IMO about half of the fan base by that time because of Ashan and new art direction, they never understood if H6 sold well is because before there was H5 and even before there was H3, and they are convinced H7 flops because of "the niche market" and "the fans". And yes, the bugs is the convenient excuse preventing us to see the GENIUS behind that iteration of course.

Good to see there's a ray of hope elsewhere.

I think the only thing really saving Heroes VII is a Final Fantasy XIV miracle. And i mean a really good game changing patch (i am not saying expansion because it wouldn't cut it as it would be a standalone).

That said patch should kill 90-95% of all current bugs and any possible consequitive bugs that might appear by fixing these bugs, It should provide a new user interface that provides useful info and can be customize to provide even more info if needed without clutter or hindering of the game area and also pleasing to the eye. Something akin to Heroes IV would be nice. Also if it could be unique for each faction, that would also add to the expirience.

To the mechanics, most units should be re-evaluated for their abilities and be given more meaningful abilities. I am not so much a fan of having a faction working as a whole as a top priority because i prefer to see units standing on their own as well. Heroes VI did provide a cascade of abilities with most of them not working but it somehow managed to keep core units useful throughout the game. The downside was that elite units and champion ones were less useful. Magic schools could remain as they are but another option should be given to players and that is of a more compact organization such as Merging spells to general schools rather than elemental ones, such as Destructive, Restorative, Altering. Abilities should be re-designed to scale with the hero and give you the impression that indeed your hero gets stronger as well as your army as the time goes by.

Optimization should involve both the game running in as many pc configurations as possible but also providing an AI curve that can match previous games, from dumb to chess master.

Now, i would like to see more choices in town building, like having to choose between strong cores and strong elites, like we can with champions. Shipyard could also return to towns close to water. Stronghold should not be able to move past Magic school level 2. I would also like to see variation of the faction, like implementing old faction lineups (whenever possible) like Heroes II, Heroes III and Heroesd IV lineups. Right now some of them can happen with the units currently in the game. These are mostly cosmetic changes but can be pleasing to the eye and game replayability in the long run.

@Quantomas

Do you have any documentation or planning I could read on of the project? It sounds very much like what I thought/imagined Heroes Kingdoms or Heroes Online was going to be like when I first heard about them(ohh boy was I wrong!). I really loved the world domination modes in the games I mention earlier. Too bad I don't know any recent games with something similar.

+1

Bugs aplenty still.

Interface is terrible but other than displaying more information at a glance(without requiring more right clicks), the lack of a hero paper doll(in favour of what? A hero artwork..?) and the mini map in every freaking screen(including towns screen and hero screen!!) are just bad. At this point I'm used to it but the design is simply dreadful.

Most unit abilities do not give character to the units, there are fewer than I'd have liked and some are even used multiple times. The whole design does not allow for much gameplay complexity or replayability. It feels simplistic compared to H5 that most consider the golden standard.

I agree that ideally there should be thematic magc schools so as to have fewer magic skills to focus on. But right now that would require heavy rework of existing spells. Some spells are almost the same in function with just a different element. Others should change tiers. Some new ones might have to be introduced to fill in the gaps. Etc. Not something I see happening anytime soon.

Regarding abilities it depends. But hero specialties most definitely!

More optimization for sure. Screw 2-3gb patches and maps sizes of more than a few mb. Faster loading times would be most welcome too.

I agree with town development variety but not necessarily the way you mention. I'd like more viable development paths between the buildings we have right now and a faster development too.

We all have a different view and ideal for the game, so we can only propose as much. The golden rule will come with the points most of us agree on in the general term, as i do believe that we will never trully agree of specifics as a community.
