You know, as much as I love Heroes V townscreens, the more I look at them, the more I feel like they're a bit too epic to represent every single city of a faction.
I mean, H5's Necropolis is located on a geographically impossible rock, the snowy mountains of Grimheim are filled with a suspicious amount of geysers, Dungeon's dark elves seem to sculpt gigantic statues of Tuidhana in their every city, Inferno's demon architects like to hit a barrel, Academy's mages seem to have enough power to sustain floating cities and Haven's castle is so large that it looks like the mayor of the small town of Ashwood decided to build a palace overshadowing all them puny peasant huts.

The way it's now turns the creature to face the attacker each time. So imagine my first battles vs 2x2 Spiders. Those frigging things rotated 5-6 times and it was a pain to watch. It felt completely ridiculous and cheesy. Either something gets done to improve the gameplay around flanking or it will continue to feel like that.
Are you saying the attacked unit would turn and face the attacker, even if it did not retaliate? I don't remember it like that, but I could be wrong.

Elvin said: Seriously? Sure it adds a bit more planning in combat but not particularly so. If on the other hand it involved the use of two stacks to flank a defending stack it would be a lot more interesting and gameplay-rewarding. Instead we get an ability similar to jousting that works only from the sides and from behind. It feels like a wasted opportunity to introduce an actually good gameplay mechanic that takes skill to properly set up and execute. Now everyone and his grandma can flank you by taking a stroll around you while you glance at them absent-mindedly. Naah that's such a sweet old lady, she wouldn't flank me. Ouch!
I still don't understand why they don't simply make it a positioning issue and drop the facing requirement. Have two stacks on either side of an enemy stack? Then you have a flank and both stacks do more damage to it. If it's not a straight alignment but rather a Knights' move from chess, you'd still have a partial flank and even if you deal more damage, it's less than a full flank.
Easy. Facing doesn't make much sense in the symbolic representation of a stack of units anyway.

The build I played was like that, I'm sure about it.

I like that creatures rotate even if they do not retaliate cause it favours fast units and also it can has decent synergy with obstacles and other units on the map- player is forced to plan each attack in order to predict where the flank side will be and attack it with the strongest creature afterwards
Btw, Bravo for M&M: Heroes 7 main servers- after final updates and changes there is no spam, hate or just anything- simply because the site is so slow and laggy that anyone does not even bother to give longer comments and scroll the page.

Imo, flanking is really, really bad, for a couple of reasons.
The game doesn't add anything in terms of ways to guard against this (you cannot plot your movement tile for tile or select a facing), which makes it basically a universal unit ability:
The unit does 25% more damage if attacking from side/behind and 50% if attacking directly from behind.
This makes it a necessity to get this damage bonus, so it's a dominating ability - all lesser individual abilities are pretty underwhelming in comparison.
Additionally, the ability supports units that are advantaged anyway: Small, mobile, high speed, high initiative.
I mean, look at the Cyclops: big, 3 movement. The guys will be flanked like hell - but won't be able to flank themselves.
It also makes the "immune against flanking" ability VERY important.
The whole thing is totally counter-productive.
It would be a good unit ability for a Dungeon Elf (Backstab) - but that's it.
The thing makes sense in games where single units fight each other; in AoW 3 it works: up to 42 single units in battles, units having up to 3 action points (and in some cases even more), can change facing, can plot their move, can move with breaks (move unit 1, move unit 2, move unit 1 again) and units reacting to being flanked.
Here?
Your unit hasn't done anything (waited, defended), not retaliated nor attacked - and it stands around, seemingly dreaming and letts itself clobber to pulp?
Bad joke, if you ask me. Utterly stupid.
However - what would it gain to allow flanking only against units that used up their retaliation(s)? A unit that has no retaliations anymore is a dead duck anyway, and "retaliation stealing" would become a real nuisance, since the proverbial single Imp would not only steal the 3000 damage retaliation of that big stack of Cyclopses, it would also open them for bonus damage.
So this is an ill-advised feature.

Just a small question(dunno if this was asked already),but what is this creature on the top left on this screenshot?
https://ubistatic-a.akamaihd.net/0004/prod/images/150331_Preview/MMH7_AdventureMap1.jpg
At first I thought it was the grim rider sitting on his spectral horse, but that form doesn't really fit(and the spectral horse would be almost nonexistent)

I'd be inclined to agree. It's either and Air Elemental or a Ghost. The artifact makes it hard to see.
