I am excited to see that Ubi is giving attention to better older Heroes games, but I have some reservations about this release:

1. Many people have mentioned known RoE bugs. I wonder, will these be fixed?

2. Will a RMG be included?

3. If Slava/WoG Team could reverse-engineer the SoD executable over 10 years ago, why can't Ubi now?

4. Weren't the HoMM III creatures/buildings originally 3D models which were pre-rendered to make sprites? If they got the original assets from NWC, why are they painting over the old sprites instead of making better renders? Or do they only have the source code from NWC?

And some other things which I've forgotten.

Probably, I will not buy it on release, and I'll wait for it to go on sale, just like I waited for AoE II HD and AoM HD. It's not worth buying the game for slightly updated graphics when you already have the old one.

Yes.

You know that RMG was introduced in Armageddon's Blade and Restoration of Erathia has "only" Map Editor?
And as HoMM3HD is remastering of RoE alone...

Seems that no, they even did not consider RoE graphical inconstistencies while it's mainly a graphical release.

vancho1 said:

No, RoE doesn't have it. Only a compatibility with the user-made RoE maps is claimed. No one cares that there are not too many RoE maps in comparison with the entire mass.

They can and anyway Ubisoft not having the source codes is impossible. I guess it's obvious for all, whatever Ubisoft says.
God bless the modern gamedev business model. Hail to DLCs.

I was putting much hope that this company responsible for the "HD" remake will use the classic 3D scenes and re-render assets in a high resolution, but it seems that the scenes are lost forever on hard drives of ex-NWC artists. Pity, we have lost an awesome game.

Damn, I can easily imagine a true HD remake by using the original work sources which you've shown instead of this washed uplifting that they call 'HD'. It's so sad that the original 3D renders might have been lost forever with nobody to benefit from them.

Anyhow, lovely comparison, Orzie.

I think you have no idea what you are talking about. There is no source code that one could "take" from Heroes Complete.

Perhaps I dont have no idea what i'm talking about, but HOMM3 Complete got both expansions, why could they not take the code from that?

What you can get by decompilation is not the same as the source code... The latter is way, way moe useful.

There is no easy way of decompilation. What you may be referring to is reverse engineering.

But as I said before: Slava and WoG team did it with SoD, and included the entire ERM engine, so it is clearly possible, especially when you have the resources that Ubi does. Plus, I think someone mentioned that some Russian localization company might still have sources, or at least some sort of dev files - couldn't Ubi find those? I fear that the answer is that this 'HD rerelease' is going to be the same as AoE and AoM HD releases, that is, mainly graphical with Steam for Multiplayer.

Granted, having steam lobby is nice, but we already have matchmaking services like GameRanger which work with HoMM III.

I dont understand all the hate when we finally got what we wanted. I'm super excited, it's like the best possible news in gaming for me. Unlike AOE2 HD and BG2 HD they rescaled and retouched the sprites, not only a pointless resolution mod.

I only wish they include simultaneous turns like in the Civ series and I will buy the snow out of the HD edition hoping they'll make the expansions as well this way.

So please, any Ubisoft official reading this, please consider adding sim turns for online mode

Kudos to Ubisoft, finally!

I don't know about you, but I am totally disappointed. I already wrote what I expected from this release some posts above. And I put much hope in that, ready to forgive Ubisoft all the numerous sins.

This is far from it. ERM is tragic mess and overall results are not useful for Ubisoft. Code needs to be organized, clean and self-explanatory as well as easy to modify and debug. ERM or WoG code shared some years ago is nowhere near that, and the results achieved by WoG moddders so far only prove it.

"A tragic mess" is greatly exaggerated, especially now when the alternatives are still far and visibly struggling from becoming fully functional.

But with a decent salary, I am sure Slava or many others could improve it in no time -or change to more readable-, create better manual, synchronize multi, etc. The main question still is: is Ubi interested by a game to which user mods add unlimited life, and for the same basic price? Financially they gain nothing.
