I played for about an hour and so far I'm impressed except from the crash that just stopped me from playing longer. The main menu soundtrack has a lot of the MMX main menu in it, which is great.
One very nice aspect I'm already seeing: the whole thing develops faster. Turns are done more quickly and you can set the combat speed really high (up to 400%). Combat animations itself are faster as well. Definitely quicker than in H5 n' 6.
Dire Wolfs ftw!

Dies_Irae's humble feedback and bug report
Right, after a bit of quality time in H7, for as far as it worked, I have encountered bugs and things I believe should require some work. Now I see that Kiryu has made a seperate bug reporting thread, but since I'd like to keep my reports and feedback together I'll post everything here. I will write down the things in the same order as they are listed on my college block, but I will color bugs red and leave general feedback and opinions black. Some screenshots may be used multiple times if they show different relevant things.
-> While the game loads, which takes some time, there is no progress bar to indicate the...well...progress of loading.
-> Objects etc are extremely small, especially map locations. Also, creature icons in-town and when viewing are small, as are their stack numbers which are quite hard to read.
Example 1
Example 2
Example 3
Example 4, which is in itself another problem, but that will be shown below.
-> Wide screen issues. Before entering a town, it's all normal. Then the Town Screen creates two black bars above and below, which remain present when leaving the town again. Going to the Skillwheel and back removes this, but it keeps happening.
Example 1
Example 2
Example 3
-> During the AI's turn, you can't right-click anything for info, which in previous games is possible. Maybe you should do the same here.
-> Cheap-snow buildings. By that I mean really cheap. 500 gold and little ore/wood for the Market Place? Not to mention other buildings. This makes army building easy if you start with a lot of resources. Look at how large my Haven army is before the start of month 2:
Example
And a bit later:
Example 2
-> Is there an autosave button? It autosaves, but I can't find where to disable it. Also, Disable/Enable Windows Key, anyone? My Windows Key doesn't work in-game, I have to quit to be able to do other things.
-> Why are there faction banners above each creature? It's quite commonly known that Cabeiri belong to Academy, there's no need for extra information on that, we never had need of that in previous games.
-> The movement dots are too small
-> Myrim's portrait has a changing background, from blue (mostly in-map) to black (in-town)
Example
-> You recycled a lot of H6's battle themes (mostly the SIEGE ones) to use them as normal battle themes. Even when besieging an Academy town do we hear the Inferno theme. I don't like this, not at all. I've only twice heard something unique, and that is what I was hoping for.
->Hero's attacks have no sound, and most spells lack this as well.
-> Animations in battles are broken. Cabeiri sometimes shoot without their proper animation, and this goes for every attack and every creature. Instead of swinging weapons or whatever, they often just stand still even if they 'attack'. Of course, this may be due to the slowness of my game.
-> No option to change hero speed/AI speed, only Gamespeed in general?
-> In battle, every attack appears to trigger no retaliation, but creatures retaliate anyway.
-> I'm pretty sure I ordered the Golem to move to the other tile adjacent to the Cabir to attack the Sentinel, but it didn't move and attacked from where it stood.
Example
->Banners are all the same color, just a few almost invisible lines around them that show your faction color. The minimap, fortunately, shows what's yours and what isn't, but I suggest giving the banners above town, mines etc their full color.
-> AI turn progress bar shows no progress, and maybe add AI's difficulty level in there too, like it was in H6.
-> I like the H6 hero turn-style, making him/her able to act during a creature's turn.
-> H3's morale system: move/act, good morale, move/act again, not a good morale from the very start of the turn like in H6. Good thing .
-> Flying creatures have no sound effect?
-> The luck roll animation doesn't show all the time.
-> Clicking on the hourglass to trigger the next turn is broken. Sometimes it doesn't work at all. Going to the save screen and coming back 'fixes' this, but it can happen again only moments later.
-> When opening the spellbook, there is no indication of the Hero's mana, unless I've overlooked something .
-> I noticed in the first map that the mines I had conquered lost my faction banner and got the neutral one again.
Example
-> Building something in town is broken. You just go back to the town screen with no H3-like animation, so that you have no clue where the hell this building ended up until you notice a slight change in the screen .
-> Sometimes when a stack dies, it gets up again. It has no number, it doesn't do anything, but it's "alive" nontheless.
Example
-> I coulnd't use the Recruit button for a Landsknecht, even though I had enough resources. Only "Recruit All" worked.
Example
-> In the town building screen, some buildings disappear even when I built them.
Example. You can see that I have Landsknechte, and that the option "Show All" hasn't been selected. Some buildings have just vanished from the list.
-> Some glitches when selecting the Next Turn, for one second it reveals yet unveiled areas like a very temporary Observatory.
-> Siege: is the gate destroyed? Creatures can't pass through for some reason...
Example
-> A heroless enemy levels up after a defeat?
Example
My impression as of now is...that it is a bit boring. That is due to the fact that there are just 2 factions and 2 maps, and that the speed isn't optimal...I experience no great fun playing the game right now. It feels like H5 (that doesn't mean I think H5 is boring ), and doesn't offer the same fun as H6 does. I like the new Town Portal idea, which is reminiscient of H5 albeit with some slight differences. I did not experience any crashes, which I believe is a good thing.
I hope the end game will be much smoother and more complete .

Knowing myself, I'll prolly go play some more during the next two weeks. I will focus on other aspects as well, such as texts, spelling and the more detailed things.
About the skillwheel: it seems pretty straightforward. Your hero starts with about three already open parts on the wheel, like Metamagic in the case of Myrim. But if you want to open Explorer too if available, that is possible.
I noticed that "Master of (spell school)" has a different name now (... Knowledge) and that Prime's Grandmaster ability underwent a name change as well: Mana Bloom.

Beta Key
If anyone has an extra key I'd be greatly indebted. I love Heroes, used to play 1 on Mac when my dad worked at a Apple retailer (back when they existed haha) but was a little skeptical about pre-ordering after Six... but I've been following it and saw they gave two keys to everyone for the delay.
Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, hope y'all are having fun testing, enjoying reading your posts.

You're exaggerating, Stormy. It's a lot more expensive than that: still 2600 Gold!

Played Academy 4 hours tonight.
Things I noticed, which I am sharing for those who did not get to play. I will report bugs officially on the Ubi forums when I have more time.
------------------
System Information
------------------
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: MSI
System Model: MS-7641
Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1045T Processor (6 CPUs), ~2.7GHz
Memory: 4096MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 11
---------------
Display Devices
---------------
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip type: GeForce GTX 650 Ti
Display Memory: 3782 MB
Dedicated Memory: 1990 MB
Current Mode: 1920 x 1080 (32 bit) (60Hz)
*3 crashes to desktop. 1 instance of disappearing hero forced me to reload.
*I experienced slowdown only immediately before crashes. I had most things turned up to high. I think textures were on medium at one point. Didn't play with it much.
*The disappearing hero bug can be game-breaking, so you have to save each turn right now just in case.
*Academy town tree forces you to make decisions in a few places. For instance, do you want to boost growth of creature A or creature B? You can't do both.
*I tried to play on Easy to get a "petting zoo" experience. Zero challenge on that difficulty. I mean, none. Enemy stacks don't seem to grow.
*Economics can make a big difference in costs of buildings as already reported in this thread.
*If you choose to Fight Again after a battle the Cool Cam goes under the ground. The enemy units disappear, and your army wins combat but gains no XP.
*Arcane Bird or whatever the hell it is called is pretty cool.
*Default zoom is too far like so many of you have said at every stage of the reveal. I was hopeful that the devs were speaking truthfully when they said they were playing zoomed out. The truth is that the over world is next to impossible to traverse when zoomed in enough to see things. If you zoom in during battle, the camera just snaps back after the fight and makes you sad.
*Setting the game speed to 400% does make AI turns faster, but it results in ridiculous animations as mentioned before my post.
*Skill pie--I am still getting used to the alignment of skills and classes. I wanted to build a Fire Wizard, but it looks like Wizards cannot learn all three levels of Fire. I had to be a Battlemage or something else.
*Looted Four Leaf Clover and Ring of Conjuring in same turn. Hero already had some backpack equipped (+250 Gold/day maybe). Tried to put on Clover and it erased Backpack. Put on Ring. By the next turn, the Ring was eaten by the Clover, too!
*Combat feels pretty good to me. I can see how fighting Academy creatures with Academy heroes will be maddening. They are so magic resistant!
*Found an Elemental Conflux and recruited Fire Elementals 2/week. They are tough shooters who hit hard and are immune to fire. Like it! Did not test the Earth Elementals at all, but I got to fight some Air Elementals. It looked like they had a strike & return ability.
*Griffins were pushovers.
*Cabiri ability to heal Golems and Gargoyles feels almost OP, but maybe I should wait until I try on a real difficulty level, eh?

Yes, really looking forward to playing more tonight. Cabiri can only heal and resurrect creatures killed within one turn.. Well at least this is how it behaved in my game.
Wizards are really versatile but it is hard to specialize since you get given random spells at the guild as wizards mage guild treats all spells equally. So you have to adapt which I actually like. Arcane birds are cool indeed. Scrolls are useful. Love the Academy!!

Yet, none reporting one of the key information we need:
HOW IS PERFORMANCE?
And nope, do not say "good" or "bad", report instead the exact fps numbers in the various parts of the game.
If I gain that this engine cannot render 60 stable fps on a mid-range system, I am out of the hype bandwagon.

Additional feedback
When I create a map, select a faction and choose a hero, I can't see said hero's specialisation. This feature appeared at least in H3, 5 and 6, where you could see his/her class (Magic/Might) and specialisation, so that you could make a choice right from the beginning. I'd like to see that return here, otherwise it's just going into the blue without knowing what your hero is capable of.
During the same selection process, the Minimap is completely black, showing nothing of the map you're about to play. This could be a bug, of course, but since something is planned there I suppose it should be used as much as possible.
--
So yes, I played for another hour today. I decided not to give a snow about the slowness and focus on things like environment, details etc. I must say, battle arena's are beautiful.
Very detailed, very worked out. Of course, high details etc affect performance. I noticed that the game runs much smoother in the Underground, where there is simply not as much present like on the surface.
The Titan's attack is a bit unimpressive , but powerful nontheless.
The reason I called it 'boring' yesterday was simply because of lack of content. Even the neutral stacks on the map are either Haven/Academy or Elementals, which adds zero diversity. Of course, this will all be different in due time.
I think I start to see why many magic schools and few spells have a downside: if you focus the Guild on Air Magic, for instance, you might still end up with only one rather useless Air spell per tier. Also, your hero needs to obtain the Novice rank of a magic school to be able to learn level 2 spells from that school. At least in H5, level 2 spells were still free for all to learn.

They really need to zoom in on the battlefields. we don't need nor want to see the environment around it. This would also address the "units are to small" complaint.
