Know a couple sites where it works out pretty good actually. They can post right away to whatever area they want, just doesn't show up until a Moderator makes sure it isn't spam or porn.

The chinese forums already found a way to prohibit bots. They ask the people who register to answer a little Trivia about Heroes (10 questions). You choose your game (H3-H5), you answer correctly, you are in. No way the bots would know the upgrade of a lizard.

I don't see a big problem, as those things are already solved in other forums with active administrators:
1) Trivia
2) Registration completed after you click on link received in Email (hotmail and other mass providers prohibited)
3) IP check when registering again within a new account and deny.
Some people can make their IP dynamic but they are only a few. The mass bots problem will be solved. (do we really have a problem here with bots? Did not see one)

The reason you do not see bots, is because of the system that is causing your friends problems. Ie that before they can start new threads, x number of posts have to go into already created threads. For some reasons, bots can not do that, and must create new threads. So .. you never see bots for that reason.
Edit: However a CAPTCHA would take care of that. You know the "Type what you see in the box" thing?

Trivia is not such a good idea. This is no more a strictly HoMM forum and even if it were it should accommodate even people who have just purchased their first game and don't know anything.
As for double accounts. In most cases they are relatively easily recognizable without any special tools. It was pretty clear from the start that dragontooth is a troll, so you could run an IP check on him or something.

It slowly degraded to a common forum, like thousand others. I wish it could go back and have a quality HoMM board, without all the garbage around, but that's life. It was the last HoMM board, now there is none left (except some library faithful posters).

The problem with a trivia/captcha is, for what I've heard, that these becomes more and more breakable with time (image recognizing programs I think?)
The way it is now is pretty great, because the rules apply for humans as well as bots, so there's no advantage to being a human. The only way a bot could pass through and start mass spamming is by behaving as a human for the period required to be able to post freely and even then there are restrictions, such as the 60 seconds pr. post, 20 post pr. day, etc.
All in all, it's pretty great, I'm certain it could be better by the suggestions already made, but I think the system as it is now have the general/fundamental part as it should be, we just need a way to make it able to detect humans vs. bots faster, not completely change it.
@Salamandre not sure what you mean about garbage, you mean people who post in the homm boards, but are more here to learn than to learn other people (like me), or people who make topics in the other sections (from newcomers to osm and everything in between) like the general not interested homm people?
I mean, as long as the boards are seperated and as long as the mods are patient yet active, I think it's very good here.

The trivia would be very easy:
The new member has to decide between Solmyr and Crag Hack.
If he takes Solmyr, he is either a bot (AI would prefer Solmyr too ), or a newbie who isn't worth enough (yet) to be part of your community

This might be presumptious to suggest as an improvement, but perhaps Valeriy should consider appointing someone to an admin-level position. A number of good suggestions continue to be ignored and now new avatars aren't even uploaded.

I agree with Corribus; if Val is unable to actively oversee HC due to personal commitments/reasons, it might be helpful to consider appointing a surrogate who is able to be more active.

Well, not that only. There is much more in the HQ when we have to take important decision or to fight spamers or to solve other problems.
Travia is not that great idea, not every members here are knowing much about heroes. The best idea for fighting bots is to enter some numbers and confirme email. The multiple accounts - IP check is going to reduce them a lot but it's a risk if someone lose his password and Val is not active to give him new one. If that happen to a moderator or active member it's a real problem.
About the bot problem it was solved awhile ago.
What is very needed is to see the previous posts in the posting page and the preview button to check your post before posting, moderators need the tool to split and merge threads, upload avatars for the members. The thread protection of no editing 1 year after posting must be lifted, but only when a moderator use some tool, and after request from the member who posted it.

Quote: upload avatars for the members.
Why not just make people upload avatars themselves on their profile page? That's how it works on just about every other forum I frequent, and it's easier, more flexible and (most importantly) smaller administrative workload.
