Eurovision 2011 Discussion Thread
Yeah, since the contest is starting next week I figured it was about time to start the annual one for this edition.... and frankly, it seems to blow this year. Only a handful stand out imo (The ones I specifically remember as amazing are Hungary, Serbia, the Netherlands, Austria, France, U.K., Slovakia and Poland). Note however that I have yet to listen to the Danish and Bosnian entries, which are -so I have been told by others with good musical tastes- amazing songs.
On the otherside of the spectrum we have absolute trash that I refuse to call "music" or "songs". I particularly hope the Greek and Swedish entries die in several fires before arriving in Düsseldorf. Okay, that may be a bit severe (the again, so is torturing my eardrums with that errr... "music". I could manure my garden with that crap.), but both songs are absolutely terrible and easily my least favorite of the bunch.... which contains MANY trashy "modern" (ugh) pop songs. -_-
Any bets, predictions, reviews, discussions and complaints go here plz. Y'all know the drill
Let the games begin.

Hey, it doesn't suck as much as UK's song from last year. Remember that fruity slow-paced song? If colorful unicorns started shooting out of the screen, I wouldn't have even batted an eye.

Thats true but still don't think it will do any good, even though its a famous group.
Have to hope all the judges are female girls with nothing better to do than drool over a boyband lol.

I don't even know how it works in eurovision, but when people have to phone to vote for their favourite singer, it often happens lol.
once, here, there was a handsome who could only sing one song (the one that allowed him to get selected) and he still made it to the half of the competition lol. the judges were even pissed at the public lol. they were like "why is that guy still here? clean your ears" lol

It's a song competition. Rest assured, teenage and young adult females are the power behind the throne

I can not believe that Sweden voted forth Eric Saade. The lyrics are TERRIBLE. The song starts like this:
"Stop don't say that it's impossible, cause I know it's possible"
Overall, I think the quality is really low this year and I think it is ridiculous and I thought it was a joke at first that in Germany, Lena sung all the entries and is going to compete AGAIN. I do like her song though, but it is not eurovisionary in any way.
There were some many good songs in the Swedish elections such as THIS ONE WITH A FOURSOME OF SWEDISH GIRLS that we could have sent instead of Eric Saade but of course all the little girls and horny elder people voted like 20 times on him.
My favorite this year is Hungary which has an amazing song and a beautiful singer. Let's hope the show will be enough for it to win. Other entries I like Norway's Disney song, "Angel in disguise" (which unfortunaly a silly rap ruined in the end of it) and I actually like UKs song but not as a Eurovision song.
I really like Polands song very much, typical euro upbeat song. And I love that they sing it in their native language, something that the Nordic countries would ever even consider doing.

I am noticing however that atleast on YouTube Sweden's entry is quite "popular" (lol xDDD) and it has the most views of all entries and it tops many users "My Eurovision top 5" etc.
So I could see it winning (please, let Hungary win instead!) or atleast be in top 10.

I don't normally follow Swedish Eurovision, but I did see several of the semifinals this year by chance, and there were some AMAZING entries - and the one that won (and the one that came in 2nd btw.) sucked BIG TIME. My favorite was the guy who ended as #3 (The Moniker) - that was a fantastic song!
I actually think the danish entry this year is pretty good. Kind of MOR Pop/Rock, but campared to much of the camp that normally enters Eurovision, I think it's actually a pretty quality offering.
This is it.
I know the lyrics are kind of cheasy, but it's really catchy and nice atmosphere.

I can't believe you people don't like Eric Saade? The guy is amazing! He will conquer all of Europe's fourteen-year-old girls for us!
But I will be voting for Germany. I love the way that Lena manages to be exciting, hot, mysterious and a bit dangerous at the same time. Love her voice!
Spain and Portugal both have real jokes as contestants, makes me remember Chicki Chicki. And the British are as boring as usual.

Spain and Portugal always seem to send super weird songs that do not work. The only countries that get away with that are the eastern european ones and Finland.
But you just gotta love Soviets song this year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9T2d_woxdLQ
Sorry, I meant Belarus. A dictatorship in Europe.
Amazing.

Finland is so obviously a Tom Dice clone. It sorta c00t and quirky. I prefered Finland's previous entry though.
Hungary's entry is absolutely DIVINE. So is Austria's. I hope both of them make it through, because losing either song would be a DISASTER imo.
Had Netherlands sung in English however, they would have been my favorites. The song is *SO TOUCHING* in Dutch... but then again, I may be biased because I -obviously- can understand the language. It is sorta bland in English. -_-
One of my personal guilty pleasures this year is Ireland. It is a song I would HATE under all normal circumstances, but I like it for two seasons:
1) The lyrics are retarded and crack me up whenever I think of them.
2) Cepheus' reaction to Jedward representing Ireland, and that possibly cracks me up even more. He must be dying on the inside after Dervish and Dustin the Singing Turkey X-D

Erik Saade is absolutely dreadful and easily Sweden's worst entry in the past 5 decades or so. It's a sh!tty version of some wanna-be Gaga song. I'd rather listen to "Friday" for 5 days straight than to listen to "Popular" (ugh) two times in a week.

It doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of winning because of the controversy, but I think Belarus's might be my favorite this year That's the sort of song I could dance to for an hour.
Big disappointment from Iceland; they were my favorite last year. Overall doesn't seem as good this year. Maybe I'm just getting old and cranky.
edit: Serbia wins when it comes to the visuals though .

For me personally, Eurovision SUCKS because 90% of contenders "sing" in the boring, overused, limited, and primitive English
Seriously, beautiful and unique languages, such as Finnish, Lithuanian, Latvian, Romanian, and Hungarian would present themselves a lot better, not to mention how interesting it would be to have such a diversity.
I KNOW many native language artists/singers from many European counries (e.g. Finland, Romania, Hungary, France, Russia, Poland etc.) surely there is performers to pick from.
I'm quite happy that Poland finally will perform in Polish (Magda Tul- Jestem) but it still doesn't compensate for the remaining 90% of broken Eglish accent crap.
