The steel boat is heavier, because steel has bigger density than wood.

The steel boat is much heavier (has more weight). This is because, knowing that both ships are of the same size (and therefore have the same volume), we realize that steel has more mass, because it has a greater mass per volume (better known as density); there are more nucleons in a given volume of steel than a given volume of wood, mainly because the intermolecular bonding is stronger.

Being that the Earth's field of gravity exerts 9.81 newtons of force per kilogram of mass on the boats, and weight is the measure of the force of gravity working on an object, the steel boat, with the greater mass, is much more strongly affected by gravity and thus has a greater weight.

Guys you've got this all wrong... (Nice work though Kor)

The ship made of wood is heavier.
Since pound for pound steel is so much stronger than the wooden one, the ship made of wood would require a greater deal of material for it to be of equal strength. So The wooden one is heavier

Yeah, what she said!

But what if the boats are filled with overweight clowns from outerspace carrying helium balloons shaped like dogs, huh?  Who's the smarty pants now?

Make a Steel boat. Make a wooden boat. The steel one would weigh more than the wooden one, YES. But it also said equal strenght, and wood is so much weaker than steel that the matter of weight will outdraw it.. Meaning you have to use so much wood to get to the point where they are equally strong, that the wooden ship will weigh more!

Korejora, I think that TRD is right. To make the wooden boat with more wood but keep them the same size, the steel could be really thin and the wood really thick, or not hollow at all.

To use enough wood on the wooden boat to make it the same strength as the steel boat, while keeping it the same size, you would have to use so much wood that the structure would be altered and it would no longer be a ship.

N'est-ce pas?

Yes it will.. It'll just be somewhat bigger, it cannot attain the same size as the steel one, and still be as strong, and therefore therefore you'll neeed more wood, a lot actually, which makes it heavier then the Steel one.

Somewhat bigger is still bigger. The riddle specifically states that they are the same size.

Is the answer, then, neither, for two boats cannot be made of the two given materials and be both of the same size and of the same strength, by your appparent definition of strength, TheRealDeal?

I'm really not sure what a_rebirthing_flight means by "strength".

nice work Korejora but TRD is correct. 1 point to TRD. steel is strong and wood is weak. more wood is needed to make the ships equal in strenght so wood is heavier. i aslo said nothing of volume.
