I enjoyed playing Caesar 3 a while ago. I stopped since it got too hard.

I'm afraid I'm of no help with the install problem, but there's another forum I used to go to that might be able to help you. It's the Vivendi Universal Forums, with the Caesar link below. You'll have to register for an account before you can post. Talk to Keith; he's a good mod over there.

Alternately, you can let me post the question for you since I already have an account. Then I'll give you their reply.

Oh, I just found this. The solution looks kinda tricky; you might need to seek assistance with that "separate partition" stuff. That's outside my language.

Another help forum

You'll have to manage the placement of your Prefectures so that your Prefects will move in the general direction you need them to. Since they tend to move in a random direction when they first appear, you'll have to experiment for the best placement. You can place multiple Prefectures together with hopes of improving the coverage. Just remember the negative desirablility of these structures around housing.

Crime can be avoided as long as you can keep your people happy. If crime does break out, having those Prefects around tends to help a lot.

What mission are you on, by the way?

i think you can set something that lets u see where the fires and crime are more likely so you can set the prefectures accordingly.

Oh, right. Those tabs near the upper right are overlays which can visually narrow down your city on the subject area you select. The Fire Overlay is among the Risk categories, and will point out the areas in your city that might catch fire. Watch out for those tall red columns; fire is almost certain in those parts.

aaahh i remember ceasar 3... a nice game...finished it. It gets quite tought at the end but don't worry
Except for the fact that you have to play as a part of the barbaric roman empire

I'd recommend Pharaoh, which is better and tougher or for the best in city building games Emperor Rise of the Middle Kingdom - an absolutely stunning game, very well thought through, great, playability and far more realistic then the other two... trie that one when Caesar bores you

I'm on my way to beating that! I haven't touched that game in months, but I remember being on one of the later dynasties. A fun game, yes.

I guess Caesar III became so difficult for me because I got used to using Road Blocks in the later games. I can't even hope to play Caesar now thanks to those frustrating times when I saw miles and miles of my villas devolve back into tents. I never truly recovered from the experience.

Oh well. If I can't rule over Rome, China's the next best place.

yo, i am currently on mission 3. engineer i think. i played it a few times and i keep running outta funds. i think my problem is trading on land. the sea is ok but land is tough. the traders come through and dont buy. i think its because when the comp told me how to trade and before i could try i finished the level. so any advice on that?

Patching Caesar III

Did you install the patch, by the way? This isn't in response to your last post about trading, but I just remembered that you might want to have this patch installed sooner or later. Your saved games might not work after the patch, and you might lose your progress so far. Maybe you can try get as far into the game as you can and if you need to restart for whatever reason, you can install the patch then.

Caesar III Patch

Trading

If you're on the third mission, I'm not sure if you're playing the economic or military city. Regardless, trading works the same way in both. I'll outline the basics below.

1. Place your raw material buildings/farms and their respective workshops. It's supposed to be good if you have two workshops for every one raw material building; that should keep industry running smoothly. For example, one Olive Farm can support two Oil Workshops. So if you go up in number, you'll have two Olive Farms and four Oil Workshops (and so on and so forth).

2. Make sure you have a Warehouse nearby to collect the Workshops' finished products. You might have noticed that you can select three choices for each good type in Granaries and Warehouses: Accepting, Getting, and Don't Accept. Accepting means the building will accept that type of good. Getting means the building will send out a special cart pusher to retrieve that good type from another Granary or Warehouse. Don't Accept means none of that good type will be taken.

For now, set your Warehouse on Accepting the good type you want to sell (i.e. Olive Oil, Weapons) and choose Don't Accept for everything else that doesn't apply. That way, your Warehouse won't get cluttered up with lesser goods that will take up the space needed by your exports. You'll find that traders will only buy goods if it's in the Warehouse; not inside a cart.

If you're trading by sea, build a Dock before setting up trade relations. It pays to have everything set up ahead of time.

3. Once you've got export goods waiting in your Warehouses, click on the World Map and select a city to trade with. Cities that sell goods you need and buy goods you have are top choices.

It's important to wait until now to set trade relations because as soon as you choose a city, they'll send traders over before you've designated goods to be sold. Or worse, maybe you haven't produced your exports yet.

4. Immediately after choosing a city, go to your Trade Advisor and find the goods you want to export. There's an Export button you should click, and you'll have to input a number of goods you'll allow the traders to buy. Make it 3 or 4; those are reasonable starting numbers.

You won't see this Export button unless your trade partner(s) want that good. Also note that if you order your Trade Advisor to stockpile any of the goods, future traders won't take those goods.

You can also import goods that your trade partner has. Just click on the good you want and select the Import button.

5. Since you've got trade relations with another city and you've chosen the type (and amount) of good to export, you should begin to see traders stopping at your Warehouses and/or Docks. This will take time; sometimes the first trader or two will ignore you if you took too long setting up the trade.

6. Generally, the closer your Workshops, Raw Material Buildings, and Docks are to each other, the faster they'll operate as a system. It's not always easy to build up your city this conveniently, but it's better not to have your Point A's a whole map away from your Point B's. Things would take forever at that rate.

7. It's also good to note that if you get Neptune's blessing, traders will pay you more for that year.
