For 3rd mission, it's better to leave rooke hero as garrison defender, since that way he can get some experince and get up to 10-15 level in no time.

The Defense (third scenario), my approach.

I agree with the others who say that after Findan handles the initial counterattacks on the first couple of days, hire a rookie hero to defend, and let Findan move on.  I gave Findan the Dragons, Hunters, and half the Druids.  For Findan and the defending Hero, split the druids into equal stacks to fill in all 7 slots, for more lightning and stone spike joy.

As you get minerals to do so, make upgrading your defensive troops the top priority, so that your new recruits will stack with the troops you already have to defend.  Don't even bother to recruit anything except druids until they are upgraded (except maybe Dragons).  It is better to have an extra slot for splitting druids than to have 14 regular unicorns and 50 silver unicorns.  So just don't recruit them until you can get silver.  Same for the others.

Findan should blitz through the area.  He can take the first mainland city on day one, hire a hero to follow behind him picking up gold and minerals and such, so Findan does not have to slow down to do that.  Findan had expert Logistics and Pathfinding; this really helps!

Your defensive hero has to handle one battle before you upgrade and buy much in the way of reinforcements.  One defensive tip: have a stack of druids take out his ghosts with lightning or stone spikes, since magic never misses.  This will free up your towers to fire at more worthwhile targets for future volleys.  My defensive hero got a bunch of levels out of this.  I got expert light and a couple of the mass abilities just from the levels gained from this one battle, which really helped with the next battle.  By the time the next battle came, I had upgraded everything except dragons (including the +2 luck for defending heroes, don't forget this one), and had bought everything the castle had for reinforcements, so the battle was not too tough.  Meanwhile, Findan blitzed through, releasing the first hero and grabbing some good artifacts, then taking out the two garrisons to get to the second hero.  Done this way, the scenario is really not too hard.

Here's a slightly different approach (this was on Heroic):

During the initial defense (where you get hopelessly slaughtered), focus on wiping out the skelly stack and then as many of the spectrals as possible. Ignore the other units. If you do this, the cpu will build the dragon bldg for you for free (and recruit your dragon but that's a tiny price to pay).

When you take the castle back, focus on preserving your hunters/dragons/druids and let the other units take most of the damage whenever possible.

Hire a rookie like everyone says (I got Deleb!). Give the rookie ALL your troops (give Findan like 1 Sprite). Have the rookie deal with the first two counterattacks outside of the castle (should be easy as those armies are small; this artificially increases the gap between the 2nd and the 3rd attack) while Findan hops into the boat and makes a beeline for the other castle. This should bump Ms. Rookie up to around Level 7ish or so (forgot where exactly). I had no logistics and got to the other castle by day 6 or so of the first week but I grabbed mines and waited till Week 2 Day 1 so the cpu could build it up for me some. Anyway, recruit a third hero to hop into another boat and scoop up all the ocean goodies. When Findan meets opposition or is at the castle (whichever comes first), use Summon Creature to grab the hunters and the dragons (this way, Ms. Rookie has access to your full army up until Findan needs some). After Findan takes castle #2, run right and kill the weak necro hero before he passes through his garrison. Should be smooth sailing from there.

Finished this one finally.

Here's some thoughts (heroic).

Mission 1

Actually pretty good, even excellent mission I'd say. You must guard the border, meaning keeping on your side atleast 4 garrisons. My garrisons were attacked twice, first time garrison itself did the job. Second time (northest one) enemy pass through, but I was close with hero, and a nice ressurection scroll, so ended that well. Then inferno hero spawns, and heads towards your town. Had castle and nice number of hunters, so stayed alive. Needless to say, in whole campaign hunters are your backbone, keep them alive at all costs. Plus, there are close by two hunter dwellings, though second one was guarded by master hunters, so took that one a bit later. Findan has a fantastic speciality as well. Before combat actually start, all shooters fire one free shot, and always targeting lowest level in opposing army. Absolutelly great for later missions. Some tips for fighting...at start pick fights wisely, slow walkers preferably at the start, have all 7 slots filled, even cavaliers wont posse much threat when all they can hit is a single pixie, while you pound them with hunters and druids.

Mission 2

Small start area with all mines but sulphur one. I had to leave gold mine as it was guarded by horde of succubus mistresses. Others were demons, cerberus. At start go with Findan claiming those mines, and buy a boat and head with scout on sea. I didn't go underground as pit lords guarding entrance would be a bit tough. Anyway, explore a bit sea with scout, build town as much as you can (I had to trade a lot) and return with scout home. Now I've used a little trick. Both heroes knew Summon Boat spell, and we had a boat there. Seems that AI knew the spell as well...as saw one succubus hero with a bit big army summoning my boat and heading to sea. First I was pissed, but as that hero stopped on one island to kill some druids, I summoned the boat back. Hopped with Findan and all the army I could raise and head to their land. And immidiatelly after summoned boat with scout, and hopped in it. Succubus hero got stuck on that island. In their land I took fully built, and poorly defended inferno town. Silo there produces sulphur, so finally could've built treants. Anyway, turn after got attacked by another hero with some big army, and I would bet anything that it's scripted event, as haven't seen the hero before, and he was in part of map with...well, nothing there. But, with help of castle and mighty hunters, stayed alive. And kicking! Claimed all the mines there as well, and after some time it seems AI bought some boats of their own, as succubus hero summoned one, and headed for my sylvan town. Panicked at first, but as it turns out...hero was pretty bad, my scout succesfully killed the enemy. And that after it took that gold mine (and seemingly lost nothing vs horde of succubus mistresses? I smell foul play!). Anyway, there might be some other heroes coming close via water, but easily disengaged. Two more inferno castles are there, both long way via sea. With help of devils and pit lords, plus with regular sylvan army (beware of morale penalties - but it seems it affected only my inferno troops), wasn't that tough at the end. Oh yes, main objective is to gather 20 emerald dragons, two ways to do it. First, you'll be able to build dwelling in town after some event (think when you take first inferno town), or you can visit the obelisks, and dragons will appear in some places. And always join you.

Mission 3

I don't think I've ever played a worse heroes map. Have to defend main town against never ending waves of necro heroes. Who in first week come daily, later a bit rarer, but expect one each week. Those heroes have lousy stats, but are 20+ levels, and they don't waste much time on spells. Most of the times attacking your dragons, treants, unicorns. Also, each hero has a bigger army than previous one. And while you defend the town, you must get 10 green dragons, 30 silver unicorns, and 50 druid elders. Plus you must find two heroes that are in prisons in the land. And as for this being worst heroes map I've ever played, it's not just becuase of those necro waves, map is also pretty ugly, with lots of wasted space. Anyway, first time, I defended with Findan for literally months. No mines at all to build those dwelling that are needed, so only managed to trade and build in month 3, 4...don't know now. And just when I got those troops needed for objective (one that says that with them, town will be able to defend itself), and finally went with Findan to attack teal, ofcourse another necro heroes came. Bleh. Second time went well. First day, retook town, left all the troops in it but master hunters and unicorns, bought a hero (was Ossir), and went with Findan in boat. Findan went south east, to take the town that eye of the magi reveals. Ossir on the other hand leveled up quite fast. No wonder with that many enemy. Eventually he lost all emerald dragons, but at same time other troops (and green drags) increased in numbers. Anyway, Findan cleared area, took mines where that other town is...and when you feel ready break that teal garrison. Regular inferno army there 10 some spectrals, 15 or 20 wraiths, 30 or so archliches, and so on. Actually there are two garrisons on same road. Also, teal hero might come out as well. Findan with help from some troops from other Sylvan town managed to beat both garrisons, teal hero, and finally poorly defended necro town. Now just to get those two heroes (and those troops previously mentioned - they have to be in garrison in main town, as soon as you remove them from there, objecitive is active again). One hero is underground for which entrance is near necro town. Second is close to south-western corner guarded by some titans. Those heroes will be active in final scenario of campaign, so up to you if you want to level them up a bit. I did, just one, underground one...but as it turns, all I needed from her was  ability to cast Summon Creatures. So good knowledge would be plus. And logs as well.

Mission 4

Nothing much to say about this one. No town, just wondering about killing and getting joiners. Visiting stat boosters as well. Final AI heroes were no threat to me at the end. Can find those quest arties, can help ofcourse, but sadly, they do not transfer to final scenario as objective made me think. Guess I just misunderstood it.

Mission 5

Wow! First impression - beautiful! We have night in Heroes 5, and looks stunning. I was just staring at my small area for some 10-15 minutes, admiring the scenery. Anyway...Findan found not much resistance in his start area when having combined army from three heroes. Left just 45 Raksahasahsadadasdjahfa Rajas alone. Anyway, I think it was week 2 when I broke through the garrisons, got abandoned mines and went through two way portal. There visited quest hut, and soon after got attacked by necro hero. Carrying 550 skeleton archers, ouch. Plus hero casts like crazy project image spell (not sure of exact name now), and that, you guessed right, on skellies. Reloaded, and got some more hunters, druids, actually all the army I could get, and got attacked again (maybe it was week 3 now). Findans speciallity kicked in, killed some 100 skellies, had luck with initiative, and as soon as it was AI's turn...he fled! Guess this happens quite often. Could've hurt me more, but instead opted for this crazy option. Oh well. A bit about objective. You have to kill Nicolai, now Vampire Lord, and Nicolai is that silly looking (on adventure map) chap you'll hear lots of times as he instant travels. But as you kill him, he immidiatelly respawns back...and now you have to bring back the dawn. That supposedly help in this task of killing him. And how to do that...well, attack some spectral dragons that are revealed when visiting eye of the magi, and you'll see. Anyway, after that first necro hero, took his town which is in same area, cleared that area as well, got all mines, but left those 900 wights alone. After some time went through another two way portal, this time you exit in underground, there are two necro towns here, plus three great artifacts behind some garrisons. One town is in center of the map, other in south-west corner. There I've seen some crazy numbers of skeletons on one hero, something that poster above me spoke about. Just 5,000 skellies this time. Well, I had enough troops, that Findan's speciallity killed around 600-700 of them I think. And again, hero fled when got it's turn. Had atleast still some 2,000-3,000 skelies when did that. Also, there's a golden bow (again, not sure of H5 name for it) right next to road when you go down from 2-way portal. Helps a ton. Now, you can explore the underground, getting those two necro towns (I got first southwest one, then 5,000 skels hero came close), and beating those spectral dragons. There's another portal in north east corner that leads directly into the heart of necromancers, but I think you are safe in underground, as not once I saw AI coming - save for those that were already there. Get as many troops as you can, I had everything but sprites, and go through that north east portal. Oh, look, another hero with legions of skellies. But now, 10,000+! This time battle went some time before AI fled. Lost all emerald dragons (35+), and war dancers and some unicorns. And that after couple of reloads. Atleast AI knows how to shield those skellies. Each stack of master hunters, druid elders killed some 500+ skeletons, and I shot only them. Rest of AI army possed no such threat. Also, that hero always casted first Banshee Howl. If it'd casted phantom image first (which is instant it seems) I'd be dead. Also, I attacked at start with emerald dragons, and their breath attack killed not only necro dragons, but some 400-500 skellies as well. Unicorns killed vampires (I had tactics), My archers shot skellies, treant waited, war dancers went towards necro troops, and now was skellies turn. They killed dragons, guess for no range penalty. I ressurected some dragons, to have them as a decoy, shot some more skellies, lost all dancers and after some time AI fled. Phew. Hardest part of the game is now over. I took the town there, beat spectral dragons, visited some power boosters, and there first meeting with little funny vampire lord. And attacks me. Better in stats than other heroes, with bigger army, but with just 2,000 some skeletons. Likes to cast implo on my druids, and even with his spell power, it kills around 30 of them. While I ress them 27 back. Nice trade off. Better than phantom image. Anyway, with him casting implo, you have just to worry about his shooters first, as others wont reach you in one turn. After beating him, he respawned back with same or bigger army, but with just 200 some skellies. He decided to ignore me this time. Well, ok. I'll do the same. Headed for other necro town a bit south west of that in center, got it, got spectral dragons that were close (by the way, biggest stack of them I've encountered was around 150, easily dispatched - guess previous poster waited a bit too long), went through another portal, another town there, another hero, but again with 'just' 2,000 some skelies. Beat dragons that were close there, and here comes the dawn! Grew tired and went for final encounter with Nicolai which stayed in his recaptured necro town in center of map.

Also, one question for others that played this map. I've found only three optional objective artifacts, all three underground...but can't find the fourth anywhere, dwarven cuirass. Anyone knows where it might be?

Yes,the cuirass is underground as well, not sure if it is hidden so well!you should be able to find it!

How am i supposed to defeat the garrison in week two?My troops aren't enough!

Week 2? I took it down near the end of week 1 (Heroic). By the middle of week 2, I had Raven's castle too. There is 1 stack of each of those creatures before you hit the garrison. Use Dirael with stacks of 1 sprite and Summon Elemental/Phantom Forces to clear stuff (even the Rajas were no match for that) and Talanar to scoop stuff. Funnel all hunters/druids to Findan and have him fight ONLY those stacks so he can pick them as favored enemies at the 2nd castle. Findan walked all over them with no losses (had about 8 druids and 40 or so hunters). After the garrison, take down a skelly stack, then change favored to skelly archer/wraiths/one of your choice before charging Raven.

I will quit playing the campaign until they FINALLY fix the biara bug in the first mission of the sylvan campaign. the game works so slow for me and i dont have enough time to play it through without saving and loading again (the method of circumventing the bug which was proposed earlier in this thread). This is so annoying and i find it officially verily sickening. I had 8 unsuccessful tries yet.

I have a problem in the 1st mission of the campaign: I played it two times so far and Biara never shows up - not only that, Teal never even comes close to the garrisons, just wanders around aimlessly. Is there a way to solve this problem, if possible retaining the current save? It is quite incredible that there are still bugs remaining in the campaigns after three patches.

Popular belief is you can't load from any save... but in patch 1.2 I did load saves from Day 1, and the game still works fine. Dunno about 1.3, though. Perhaps it went back to the old bug?

Which version is your game? Latest is 1.3, did you patch up to that?

Do you have any mods installed?

You did capture the Inferno town *before* visiting the obelisks?

Hi!

Is there an easy way to finish the fifth mission? My Findan has expert light magic but not resurrection. Is there a way to have it in a previous mission (like the third one... if so, I think I will restart there)? Is it essential? How long should I wait before crossing the first gate (with zillions of zombies etc. etc.)

Thanks!

Why Nicolai get his army so fast.

i am still on mission 1 on sylvan campaign, but after reading all your post, just a thought, when we play the necropolis campaign, Markal have a special ability to raise the dead unit after the battle ended. It is no only skeleton archer, but also other creatures.

I think Nicolai have the same ability or more powerful, so when he attack neutral army, he will raise skeleton archers, and his dead units.

hello

As for me - my laptop wasn't enough to play heroes 5 and recently I could finally play on the desktop where I finally got a decent graph.card.

As I read those last pages (and first 2-3 also) - I see that the latter patch - the more bugs. On other forums I also read about this and these were people with at least patch 1.2.

Well - I just play on the standard version I got from friend (1.0) and didn't experience those problems with triggering objectives. Maybe it's because I get all of them by Findan himself and rarely take the defensive stance by garrisoning any heroes.

Mission 3 - I got the similar tactics with rookie defending the capitol and Findan making the rest of the job.

Mission 5 - here I had some serious problems - although I manage to defeat nearly all the skelly archers, vampires and spectral dragons in the Nicolai's army - I took the beating nevertheless, and after 2 tries (well record from beating him wielding those 14k skellie archers was 2k left ^_^). Maybe it would have a chance if not those damn abused Phantom Forces spell on skellie archers (and i will have a question later on about it).
Oh I must add i did what the stupid seer asked for - I had some phoenixes in army - first I thought that the game requires me to do it in some order like:
- beat Nicolai so he can rise again
- come back for phoenixes
- beat him once and for all
But I didn't have time to repeat all.

As I got somethin like 800 skelly archers joined at some mine and gave it to Raven (I bought at tavern next 1-2 weeks after I beat her)- I took an idea to amass some army of undead (I already got both underground Necropolises + the Raven's one) and go with Raven for that lower right corner of the underground where those legions of peasants, conscripts, imps etc. were placed - later on I also got the Unicorn Bow I didn't notice - beating everything with Raven. Plus skellies from all the 3 Necropolises (well it took me some 2-3weeks) I had amassed an army of nearly 6k of them.
Next step was to replace unicorns with liches - the Quantity at that time was nearly identical but with unicorns bow there was no talk - ranged attackers prior to all.
I also replaced sprites with those 6k skellies (yes i was so nooby i fought having them and war dancers in army ^^), and war dancers with emerald dragons. Well - and then I was still thinking that beating Nicolai with all of this (not mentioning about uber equipment with shiny Rings of +10% and +20% initiative) - will be enough so i left one slot for those pathethic 5 phoenixes.
Well I beat him loosing all emeralds and of course the damn phoenixes... And nothin - he rose from the dead far away. In the rest of the day i took the remaining castles on the left part of the map.
I only by occasion killed one of those spectral dragons (previously I only killed those guarding Robe of Sar-Issus). So the movie was about those "the darkness is going out" or sth. movies.
So... I started killing the stacks while blocking Nicolai from moving anywhere by Raven who had only 1 day way to the castle he retook.
Finally the end.
The hard fight for Raelag with Grawl at the end of previous campaign was a piece of cake comparing to this.
Oh and piece of word about this resurrection use - as for me it was a must-have spell in h3 but here frankly speaking so far i was playing - I only consider the Light Magic really a must for Knights for the Guardian Angel advanced ability. I don't say it sux or sth - but... there are to few slots to include it.
As for me I had:
-Luck (Resistance/Soldiers Luck/Elven Luck)
-Leadership (Diplomacy/Recruitment/Battle Commander) - or i missed sth or BC only active in a scenario it is picked...
-Logistics (Pathfinding/Scouting/Stalker)
-Destructive M. (Fire M./Ice M./Mana Burst)
-Attack (game default - Tactics/Frenzy) - this sux as it right away cut me off from ultimate ability
And of course expert avenger ->DeadEye Shot and Multishot

Two Questions:
Should the "Banish Spectral Dragons" or so appear in the objective log? If so - it is a first... glitch or sth I encountered playing heroes 5. As it never appeared (And it should imho, especially after the "phoenix appearance" failed).
Phantom Forces cast by Nicolai - it is kinda default only for this campaign?
I mean - all the clones he summoned (while fighting with findan - skellie warriors, while retaking the castle - spectral dragons) where having their turn immediately and that was a main problem when i first fought with him. Later on playing single scenario with necro with spellpower 20, expert summon magic etc. somehow my skelly archers didn't get their turn right away :/.

I hope I won't get banned for such long post
I would write more but this would be more of skill discussion.
