I really liked Scent of a Woman too, although I have to admit that I got really sick of everybody saying "Hoooo Haaaaah" after watching it

Riiight  I remember I used this movie in one of my training sessions. The conflicts portrayed in that movie are source of good debate and discussion. So we watched the movie in the evening, the next morning we had a language game (part of the training was also about English ) followed by discussion. And I remember opened the session with "Can we hear some hoohaa?" as an energizer. Immediately after the response I felt like some dirt blocking my ears and thought "What the hell I am doing..."

I've seen this movie about a dozen time actually (seriously). I like the conflicts conveyed there and also the solution. It took me a while though to comprehend why protecting vandalism is considered "acceptable" in that movie. Then I realize that while vandalism is one thing, forcing someone to do something he doesn't wanna do is a bigger crime. We don't educate people to become a snitch.

After the smurfs were successful for awhile they also had Snorks.  Which was (to me) just an underwater version of the smurfs.  Replace the word Smurf with Snork, and boom there ya go.  They really didn't have a Gargamel tho.

There are a lot of cartoons that do that though.  After Thundercats there was Silverhawks.  Almost exactly the same thing, different names.  Not sure which came first but there was Lonestar and Phantom.  At least most others at least tried to hide the similarities, these didn't even really try all that hard.

Cartoons today drive me insane, the ones they aim at little girls are horrible...In example, the Bratz - the first time I saw a Bratz movie, I watched with my jaw on the floor the entire time. the general message of the show seemed to be that school is a fashion show, nothing matters if you aren't beautiful and that makeup and clothes were everything. Not to mention the bizarre body shape of these dolls - and the skimpy outfits they have on.

Its no wonder that eating disorders are such a giant problem with young girls..and because of these cartoons and such there are these new lines of clothing for little girls that make them look like mini-hookers. My daughter is 8, and when i shop for her I see mini skirts that would just barely cover her behind, and they actually sell fishnet stockings for kids! And of course, they have these lovely little midriff baring tops to complete the outfit. It's ridiculous.

It's really no wonder that kids are doing things like having sex and drinking etc at younger ages now than ever before - it seems for some reason we don't want to just let kids be kids. The way some of the girls dress at my kids' elementary school is just frightening. Sure, things like that can be cute for at-home dressup with the girls - but out in public? It makes the playground a pedophile dreamland...

Blah.. and the boys cartoon seem to really think that mucous is something amazingly funny. I don't know how many times I've flicked through channels to see those cartoons about babies with giant snot balls constantly dripping from their noses... its gross.

It really really makes me miss bugs bunny, watching Wile E. Coyote's plans go bad was good clean fun

The cartoons I remember when I grew up were quite better than those available now for the most part. I had taken the time to check them a couple of years ago and it's disappointing to see the quality went down. The magic of some is gone and instead of good humour I see sillyness. And of course inferior remakes.

Aanyway it's been a good day with good company. At some time things went bad with one of our most boring professors ever coming half an hour late and keeping us 20 mins more after having squandered 3/4 of his lesson with pointless examples and repeating the same things with different wording. Gotta love people that respect your time.
But returning home, listening to some music, chatting some and having something sweet for the occasion has all but lifted my mood And there are plans for later of course

How was your day?

Cartoons, hmm... can't really tell the difference. I think both eras have good and bad, though the latter is more today I guess  A fine one my kids are watching now is Avatar, just a classical adventuring movie, but sufficient exposure of good vs evil for kids. And of course educational one like Dora is always welcome to the family.

Glad to see Elvin enjoyed his birthday  Speaking about birthday, in my custom when you celebrate it you have to have noodle in the menu because noodles represent wishes for a long life. And if noodle is served, you have to eat it even a tiny bit regardless of your condition (already full etc), for if you don't it's like not wishing the birthday person a long life. On the other hand, you shouldn't give your present to the birthday person prior to that date, as that would be a symbolic form of wishing him/her a short life  (Come to think of it, funny how delaying giving a present as looong as possible - maybe for years - isn't considered a wish for long life )

Am I the only one with this tradition?

Dora is ok, spongebob can be funny, and a couple other cartoons are not bad.  At least it got past Ren and Stimpy (ugh).  Billy and Mandy is almost as bad though.  Almost.  I do miss some of the old cartoons, but am far from talking about the 'good ol days'.  Give me a couple years .  I liked most of the ones I mentioned earlier, even if some were just watered knock offs of each other.  I don't miss the smurfs, strawberry shortcake ( now what where they thinking??), or *shivers* the powerpuff girls.  Maybe it was because boys watched cartoons more, but most of the good cartoons was not tailored for girls sadly.

Still in each one I liked there was a strong woman as part of the group.  Scarlet in GI Joe, Cheetara in Thundercats, ect.  One of the newer ones I did like (of course it got cancelled) was JLA and JLA unlimited.  They were really good.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was my favorite of them all. Cool heroes, excellent bad guy Shredder and nice opening theme. Then of course He-man, Looney Tunes, Duck Tales, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds, Maja the Honey Bee and The Wonderful Adventures of Nils where also very good

Happy yesterday BD for Elvinix

All cartoons aimed at a certain gender end up quite bad. Its kinda important to make sure both are fairly represented or something.
All those shows that are practically there just to show that females love shopping and all males are terrible are probably the worst. Ends up showing everyone as an idiot.
But then maybe females think that those are slightly better then the polar opposite.

I have to really agree with you here.

I think it just isn't with cartoons, but also with music as well.

It seems that some music that is accessible to young teenage girls can be really bad, kinda like what you said with the cartoons.

If I go to watch the TV, and put on a music program, then I will probably see many songs with videos of girls maybe a little younger then me with the fashion of an adult, or maybe with skimpy outfits on.

I think since most young people look up to older people, and the music industry is really good with this, in that many people worship bands, singers and such, and if the singers that are female dress with skimpy outfits, and have all this makeup on, then I think that the younger girls watching this might also do the same thing.

Younger people look up to famous people, as role models.

When I was younger, I used to wish I could be like Arnold Schwarzenegger because I really liked the movie The Terminator, but oh how that changed quickly.

Luckily for me I never actually tried becoming like him, unlike some other people who try to be like the people that they want to be like.

Paris Hilton was a very bad person, and many younger people looked up to her and tried to be like her, and these younger people, oh I felt sorry for them, because of the way they dressed which is just a hot spot for Pedophiles to get them.

This is a disgrace.

I wouldn't say eating disorders as such, of course people will try to become EXACTLY like that person, even weight wise, but generally I see them trying to copy the way they dress, and the way they act.

If a girl such as a singer acts all, sorry to say this but acts like a snow (hate that word), then sometimes the girls will also try to act like that, and it is really quite sad to see.

I wonder what exactly goes through the people who make all these revealing clothes for these younger girls, I bet they are really sick in the head or they just do whatever they are told so they can get money and they don't care at all about the younger people that are going to wear these bits of clothing.

I think the selling of mini skirts and fishnet stockings for little girls is a disgrace, and I think that something needs to be done about that, that is just ridiculous.

I absolutely agree with you there.

There was a thing in the newspaper just a couple of weeks ago, about a 12 year old having sex with a 11 year old girl at school, and then the 12 year old had a friend filming this with his phone.

They then went to youtube and actually uploaded that video to youtube.

Now I dunno what you people might think, but I think that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

Don't parents have control of their kids anymore?!?!

And what about the freaking school?!

If I was the parent, I would sue the crap out of the school.
That kind of thing is just a pure and utter disgrace, and it is just sad to even hear that kind of story.

Things like Britney without panties occupy more of our time then things that actually matter.  I really don't care who's sleeping with who, or if this or that person committed a crime.  Lets take the OJ fiasco.  A regular 'joe' commits a crime (or not, lets not debate if he did or didn't) and goes to trial..you think it's going to be as big as that trial?  Absolutely not.  I didn't watch a single minute of that thing.

Celebrities for some crazy reason tend to be rolemodels, and for the sake of my sanity I can not figure out why.  Maybe it's because of the wealth?  Nah, if so Bill Gates would be the most popular person with hordes of 'groupies'.  So can't really understand it.

Sad thing is, like previously said, is that children start imitating the behavior they see.  Just wait till you see a lot of little Britney wannabees without panties *sighs*.  Now I know a lot of people would question my sanity, but I like the Spice Girls.  Their latest video, however, has me questioning this.  Don't get me wrong, I like PCD and some of the videos are interesting, but those women who make it without removing their clothing always have more of my support.

This has been another chaotic and rambling post by yours truely.

maybe things should go back to the good old days

Well, I've watched a few generations "come of age" now. Some things are different with each one, but mostly it's the same thing in a different package. Every generation has their "good old days". Every generation also has their "bad old days", but people tend to remember the good things and forget the bad. That's just how it works.

One advantage to watching things long enough is seeing how things turn out in the long run. The human race is amazingly adaptable. Things tend to work themselves out. To be honest, the only exposure I have to young people is here at HC and maybe watching "kids" at the mall or at restaurants (which I find interesting simply because I like watching people). The things I see here and in RL don't overly concern me. That's not saying it's no concern at all, it just doesn't OVERLY concern me.

I tend to be negative in looking at where things currently are. But I'm very optimistic about the future. I have complete faith that each generation will find their own way, and the current generation is no exception. Each generation has their advantages and disadvantages. In my opinion this generation has some great advantages.....specifically the internet and forums like this where people from around the world can get together and talk as if they are next door neighbors. Just think of the possibilities!

When the current young people start running their respective countries, how can they seriously consider starting wars and bombing other countries when nations are no longer lines on a map that you memorized in geography class....but they are your neighbors and friends? How could you start a war without pausing and saying "hey, that's where so-and-so is from and he's my friend"?

It's not something to be taken for granted. Don't blow it.
