Checking the time, Christian started to wonder how much time it would take him to go to the place where Wobbuffet was seen here in Helnith. And how much longer that way would be when he returned to the base.

Main Group:

Zack calls out his Mr. Mime while Misty calls out Dubba and the latter shifts shape—the Bandra forces don’t seem to notice, as their attention is directed elsewhere. Down below, the group notices some commotion at the entrance to the Shrine: a newly-arrived trainer quickly shoulders through the defenders already present and sends out a long, serpentine Pokemon that looks like a cross between a reptile and a coral reef. Its color and shape bear a strong resemblance to Pylus. ((*cough*evolved form*cough*)) It looks briefly pained at its release, but as a barely-discernable order of “Fog Maze!” echoes from the crowded Shrine entrance, its jaws part and a fountain of steam baths the area in fog. It only lasts for a few breaths—apparently the Bandra forces are prepared for this tactic as it gives way to a Sandstorm a moment later—but the end result is that the Shrine entrance is obscured by localized weather.

----------------

Christian:

You check your ‘dex map. Going across country, it looks to be about sixteen miles from Rieva to the cave in question, and about thirty-one miles from the cave to Moontear City if you cut between Stardust City and the Shrine of Light. Going back the way you came from Rieva ((cross-country without the detour)) is about twenty-six miles. Either way it’s all going to be on foot with busted up ribs, unless you can flag down a ride from the Bandra forces near Stardust ((that you know are there thanks to the Grunt chatter you overheard at the end of your last mission in case you forgot)).

Never mind, I guess they had it covered, Mina noted to herself.

“Right. Natu?” she waved vaguely in Brona’s direction. The little green Pokemon trilled and, after a brief hop from Mina to Brona, vanished with him.

----------------

Brona:

You appear in the midst of sandy combat, between the walls guarding the entrance. Mina’s Natu looks briefly as though he’s flown headfirst into a window, then rather worse as a stone launches itself into him and he tumbles to the ground. He issues an indignant “Nat!” almost drowned out by the Sandstorm, fluffs his feathers and promptly vanishes. ((-(13+3) HP))

There is some confused shouting from both ends and you’re almost attacked by a small, dark Starlight Squad-owned Pokemon before the trainer with the serpentine beast calls off your own side and you are hastily dragged inside behind friendly lines.

“Brona?” “What are you doing here?!” A few of you fellow Starlight squaddies recognize you but are hushed by the sandy-haired trainer with the fog-producing Pokemon. Who, up close, you recognize as Lijan—one of Elren’s lieutenants.

“Quiet, let him speak,” he instructs.

Brona nods in greeting to those he can recognize in the confusion.

"There are several trainers just outside the Bandras view, we will assist in any way we can. Many pokemon were hurt on the way up, most of them unconscious, while fighting bandra forces. If you have revive and potions for us we could surprise them with a rear attack while they are busy fighting a full frontal attack."

He let out a short laugh, sounding almost like a snort. "I always plan things like it's war. But I guess that's what this is."

He looked over at the others. "There's really not much else to tell. A group set out as fast as we could, but it took quite some time getting here due to other circumstances."

He shrugged. "That's pretty much it."

"Hmmm..." Christian poundered and laid his hand on his rib and felt to feel how bad the damage was "Logically speaking, it would be more convinient to hitch-hike with the guys near Stardust, but that also moves the information near the 'enemy' so I guess from that point of view it would be bad and I might hear it from the boss...but, I don't feel like walking all that way back to the base." Christian stood up and finally mumbled "Okay, destination: Stardust!" ((Up to that point he was only thinking.

“Don’t worry about your friends; we’ll take care of them. Go rest up; Elren will want to speak with you all as soon as possible.”

Misty, Zack, Draloed and Stacey appear about then, Mr. Mime and Dubba taking minor damage in the process. Mina trails in last with her Natu, who is chattering indignantly in Pokespeak as the pair is dragged inside.

“Are you the last?” he addresses Mina.

“Should be,” she agrees.

“Good. All of you come with me; I’ll show you where you can rest yourselves and your Pokemon. You look like you need it.” ((Mina: 25 hours without sleep. Stacey, Misty and Zack: 23 hours. Draloed: 22 hours. Brona: 21 hours. ))

Lijan escorts the group to the next room over, most of which has been converted into an infirmary of sorts. Injured Pokemon and trainers are lying about, recooperating, while healthier individuals go around tending them. Isolated in one corner are three very still forms, their faces covered with jackets and spare shirts in place of proper shrouds. The Starlight Squad lieutenant shows the group to an empty space of floor where they can spread out their sleeping bags and rest.

((Three hours of rest time pass and the group Pokemon are now fully healed. Brief intermission for role-playing, asking questions etc. while I prepare the next chunk.))

((@ ohforf: Are you coming back full time now or do you still need to be auto’d?))

Mina rolled out her sleeping bag and contemplated it for a moment. She was so tired she had to concentrate to do more than stand and stare at the thing, but she wasn’t quite sure she should sleep in the midst of a horde of strange people. They were Team Bandra’s enemies, but did that mean they could be trusted? On the other hand, she was positive staying awake much longer would be a bad idea, as it was getting hard to string thoughts together.

"I'm sorry I'm a bit slow, but anyone who's an idea what's gonna happen next?"

Mina blinked, and had to struggle to formulate a response that didn’t come out in half-sentences.

“I s’pose we’re going to help Brona’s friends get themselves out of this little mess.”

She returned her gaze to her sleeping bag and stared at it some more. At last she resolved to just rest for a bit, and leave Natu out for protection. She could only be so paranoid when she could barely remember why they were there in the first place.

She was asleep within minutes.

Main Group:

The group rests up amid the not-so-distant sounds of combat and groans of pain, occasionally joined by more Starlight Squad wounded.

((And it’s now 8AM, which means we finally get the text Christian sent. ))

After about three hours, the group Pokemon are completely rested and ready for action; the group also finds a message from Christian waiting on their Pokedexes:

Ladies and pokémon, it is my honour to say that I got away safely from whatever Brandra facility I was in earlier and am now finding myself in the city of Rieva. However, there is some piece of information that the Brandra have gotten hold of which seems to be important. There is some kind of delivery package coming in today and I am planning to ambush it and secure the information. So how are things holding up at your end(s)?
-Christian

((React as you will here. Continuing on…))

Not long after, one of the Starlight Squad informs the group that Elren and his lieutenants would like to speak with them now, and guides the group to a small side chamber. It’s private but cramped with the arrival of the group; someone has jury-rigged a table out of rubble and a loose board, on which a rough map of the region has been placed, and there’s a single pallet stashed in a back corner out of the way.

Already gathered are a trio of Starlight Squad agents, among which the group recognizes Lijan. Sitting in the back is an older man of about forty whom Brona knows to be Elren ((the guy who sent you to Ternai Town in the first place))—dressed in tattered blue Elder robes and propped up as carefully as possible in the tight quarters, his right leg swathed from hip to ankle in bandages oozed through with dry blood. All four are debating with a fervor that borders on argument—

“…We could try for Ceris,” suggests Lijan. “And fortify ourselves in the Contest Hall.”

Elren answers him. “There are too many people in Ceris; we can’t risk their safety by bringing Bandra down on them.”

“And I suppose it has nothing to do with Elder Rashel, does it?” a dark-haired man with scarlet eyes and an aristocratic voice interjects knowingly.

Lijan interrupts soothingly. “Stop it, you know he’s right.” There is a pause. “What about Rieva?”

“It’s too small; there isn’t any good place for us to dig in,” the fourth man—green-eyed and of indeterminate age—replies.

“…We’re going to have that problem no matter where we try for; either it has a large population base or it doesn’t have what we need to support us until we can scatter efficiently,” the aristocratic-sounding man informs the others. “We’re going to have to choose one or the other.”

“Then maybe we should turn around and fight our way to Prai,” the green-eyed man puts in, his finger stabbing a town on the map to the south and west. “They’re going to come under attack sooner or later anyway, and Bandra will never expect it.”

This suggestion seems to irritate the dark-haired man. “The whole reason we came this way was to draw Bandra away and give the people in the south time to evacuate, and now you want to turn around? I still say we should try for Skybreak City—“

Absolutely not!” Green eyes protests vehemently. “Even the wild Pokemon avoid that place!”

“It’s too far away,” Lijan adds, voice calm, “Most of our wounded wouldn’t make it.”

“We’re going to have trouble getting them out of here anyway—

They cut off quickly as the group enters.

“Brona,” the Elder nods a greeting. “I take it your attempts to keep Bandra out of Ternai were successful?”

((Answer how you like here.))

After Brona’s response he turns to the rest of the group. “I’m glad I’ve got to meet you all at last. As Brona might have already told you, I’m Elren, current leader of the Starlight Squad and, until recently, Elder of Stardust City.” He looks briefly very grave, and it’s no wonder why with Stardust now occupied by the enemy. But the expression passes and he introduces the other Starlight Squad members present, nodding to each in turn. “These are my lieutenants: Dien—”

Dien nods to the group, his expression still sour from the interrupted discussion. Of indeterminate age, he is green-eyed and somewhat short compared to the other two.

“—Sesh—”

Sesh turns out to be the scarlet-eyed dark haired man with the aristocratic lilt to his voice. His thirty-something visage sweeps over the group; he makes no sign of greeting.

“—and you all already met Lijan.”

The sandy-haired lieutenant smiles and waves politely. Even in the dim light he looks kind-faced and handsome; in his mid-to-late twenties, tall, with baby-blue eyes that seem constantly lost in thought.

Elren continues. “We’ve been fighting Team Bandra for a few years now, foiling their plans and protecting the people of this region where we can. Lijan has told me you’ve come to help us out, so I’m asking for your advice on what to do next.

The Shrine is becoming increasingly harder to defend; there are no medical facilities here, and the last of our supplies are about to give out. Bandra has been pressing us without stopping since our arrival, and the wild Pokemon here are becoming increasingly more restive with our invasion of their homes. We need to figure out our next point of retreat, and we need to do it fast, before our situation gets any worse.”

“Brona,” the Elder nods a greeting. “I take it your attempts to keep Bandra out of Ternai were successful?”

Brona shrugs. "Of course." he answered, then crossed his arms over his chest while the introductions took place.

When Elren stopped speaking Brona arched an eyebrow and smiled slightly. "Might be a bad idea, but what if we headed back to Ternai?" he said. "The pokecenter is up and running, and it's not too far away. If we leave the Shrine the same way the rest of us arrived we could slip away almost unnoticed and get a fair headstart. In Ternai we could also fill up on potions, revives and whatever we could need. Then take it from there."

Main Group:

“Ternai is even further away than Skybreak,” Lijan puts in, looking worried. “We’ll never be able to take our wounded that far.”

“We are not going to Skybreak!” Dien insists, flushing.

“And we’re not going to Ternai either.” Sesh states darkly. He turns to Elren. “These idiots would have us strung out like beads in those mountains with nowhere to rest and no place to fortify! I told you looking for help outside Helnith was a bad idea!”

“It would be a fine location,” Lijan disagrees passively. “But the fact remains we have too many of our people who can’t make the journey even without the Bandra forces pressing us—”

“What about Salerdia?” Draloed asks.

There is brief silence as the arguing parties turn to Draloed.

“What about Salerdia?” Mina asks back—she had not, after all, been the recipient of his vision. Then she blinks. “She’s here?”

Elren eyes the boy in surprise, then notices the Mark of Light around his neck. His expression warms considerably, though he also looks sad.

“We haven’t seen Salerdia since she was driven off over a day ago, badly injured. We have to hope she stays away for now.”

“How come?” Zack pipes up. “I mean, if the Pokemon is injured we could just catch her and take her to a Pokemon Center. That would be a lot easier, don’t you think?”

Sesh looks scornful; Lijan winces. But Elren’s expression is serious as he replies. “I’m afraid it’s not that simple.

Pokeballs have a set of safety measures built into them, and one of these is a power dampener. For most Pokemon, it just puts limits on how strong they can get ((in game terms, it limits them to level 100)). But for Legendary Pokemon, the effects are more far-reaching than that, because Legendary Pokemon are more tightly tied into the fabric of the world. Catching them will suppress that link, and can have dangerous repercussions if they’re tied into anything important.”

“Put plainly,” Lijan adds, “if we—or anyone else—catch Salerdia, even with good intentions, the region will start dying again.”

“Which also means we can’t just stuff Aidrelas into a Pokeball and be done with this whole mess,” Mina hazards.

“That’s right,” Elren answers. “There were ways to get around that long ago—rituals that could temporarily separate the Pokemon from the fabric of reality without hurting either—but the methods to do that were lost after the last war.” He shifts his wounded leg awkwardly. “But we’ve gotten off topic. Have we decided on our destination?”

“Ternai Town,” Dien replies.

“We are not,” Sesh insists.

“We can’t—”

“Here’s an idea,” Mina interrupts Lijan before the three can break into disagreement again. “Send the wounded off separately.” She traced the road out of the Shrine of Light with a finger. “Maybe to one of these two cities, since they’re closer. I’ll have Natu Teleport them, then we don’t have to worry about transportation much.”

The Psychic type in question starts trilling in protest a split second before half the Starlight Squad brass does. Only the latter’s argument is comprehensible, though.

“Are you trying to tell Bandra where we are? Even if that little puff of yours can manage the distance—which by the look of it I doubt—” Sesh begins. (Natu ruffles his feathers and stares at him but doesn’t protest.)

“—we have no way of knowing whether Kerry has his eye on us or not!” Dien finishes.

Mina looks taken aback. “Who’s Kerry?”

This time all three lieutenants start talking at once, trying to explain. They cut off once it’s clear that no one is being understood. The three exchange looks and finally Sesh sums it up, holding his head in a classic surrounded-by-idiots gesture: “Just take it as given that it’s a bad idea.”

“But we could split up,” Elren remarks consideringly. “We were trying to scatter ourselves before the attack anyway; we might as well finish the job. Maybe we can still salvage our original plan.”

“Are you mad?” Dien protests. “We’re already outnumbered two to one! There won’t be enough of us left to inconvenience the Bandra advance if we’re wiped out here! We should keep our forces together until we get to safety, and if we can’t, we’ll at least go down fighting!”

“But we’ll be harder to follow if we split up,” Lijan points out. “At least some of our people might escape.”

((Input time again. Split up or stick together? You might also want to suggest a route in either case.))

----------------

Christian:

((Roll = 9))

Not long out of Rieva, you notice a lone human figure walking alone towards you. He whistles a jaunty tune that swiftly cuts off as he comes into hailing distance and notices you. He eyes you suspiciously, and you can hear him mutter to himself, “…doesn’t look like a Bandra…” Louder, he calls to you:

“Are you a Pokemon trainer?”

“You guys keep suggesting that tactic,” Mina remarked casually, figuring she’d better speak up before the others decided to do something suicidally stupid. (Sesh sounded like he was going to protest again, but she ignored him for the moment.) “Am I the only one who recalls just how battered we got the last time we tried it? And it didn’t work out all that well the first time we tried it either, as I recall.” Not to mention that half the Bandra forces they’d encountered thus far had had some kind of Rock or Ground type, against which a Sandstorm was actively counterproductive. She turned to Lijan. “Unless you can do that fog thing again?”

Under his ever-present serenity, Lijan looked downcast, or so it seemed to Mina. “Not for very long. The Bandra forces have figured out how to counter it—you saw what happened on your way in.”

Mina thought about the problem for a moment. “I don’t suppose this place has a back entrance?” she asked hopefully.

It was Elren who answered. “There is one, ((which you lot may or may not have figured out on your own, given that the first thing they asked when we showed up was “Which way are you coming in?” )) but it goes through the Shrine itself, and the Pokemon here aren’t happy we’ve brought Bandra to their doorstep. It wouldn’t be any easier to get out that way then through the front entrance.”

“So we’re stuck with Teleporting past the blockade anyway.” Mina filled in.

Sesh scowled, visibly losing patience. “You can’t Teleport in or out of the Shrine; why do you think we retreated here in the first place?”

In response, Mina’s Natu made some irritated noises in Pokespeak that seemed to Mina to be along the lines of ‘so we’d noticed.’ She remembered he seemed a little stunned on their arrival, and it dawned on her that it hadn’t entirely been because of the sharp stones around the entrance.

“So we’re taking to plan—” Mina shook her head and started over. “—planning to take the Shrine with us, then?”

The scarlet-eyed lieutenant wasted a moment on looking impatient before snapping, “If you have something to say, then out with it girl! We don’t have all day!”

“We just get far enough out away from the Shrine to Teleport. We got in okay from that walled-in area just outside the entrance—” for certain values of okay “—so we should be able to get out from there, too, correct?” Mina asked in a correct-me-if-I’m-wrong tone of voice.

“We’d have to clear Bandra out of the entranceway completely if we’re going to be moving everyone out that way. It will be rough,” Elren shifted uncomfortably in place; clearly his leg pained him. “We’ll still have to hold them off, and we won’t have the advantage that chokehold gives us.”

“And when Bandra figures out what you’re doing and blocks you?” Sesh added pointedly.

“Then we’ll get to try splitting up after all,” Mina answered darkly. “Who are we sending off first, and which route are we taking out of here?”
