Mark:

The girls whimper and huddle together, exchanging frightened looks; you get the feeling that they really don't want to go through that door, but they creep along after you anyway.

At first the room seems empty, and you and your Pokemon make it inside before anything more obviously amiss is revealed: you note the healing machine against one wall, hastily unplugged, and boxes stacked up around the room. But then the Drifblim fades into view and you see the caltrop-like spines scattered across the floor and glistening with poison.

"Not very bright, are you?"

The girls scream. Oodramer is blasted with an Ominous Wind that also slams the door shut, but being part Normal type is unaffected. Ariados takes that as his cue to leap for the figure that steps out from behind a stack of boxes, only to be intercepted by a Nidorina. ((10 damage to Nidorina.)) The lighting here isn't the best, but even so you can make out the spiky Bandra 'B' on the man's chest and the black Taskmaster's vest...and four Pokeballs.

((Told you more XP was coming up. ))

Mark jumped back with a yelp. "Girls, if you have any more pokemon, now would be a good time to send them out! Focus on one pokemon at a time, Nidorina first! Oodromere use bubble beam on Nidorina, Ariados use Nightshade, Tailow use growl!" The young pokemon might have massive amounts of evasion now, but the little bird was still too young to do any real damage to pokemon like this.

Mark:

Both girls shake their heads mutely 'no.' "This was just supposed to be a Contest!" the girl with the Chimecho wails.

Oodramer, Ariados, Taillow, and the two Coodinators' Pokemon take the field. Thanks to a combination of Poison typing and various modes of flight, only Oodramer is affected by the poisonous spikes over the floor—Kirlia avoids them by virtue of staying by Mark's feet, out of the fight for now.

Drifblim uses Minimize!
Drifblim's Evasion rises!

Nidorina uses Double Kick!
It's super effective!
Oodramer is hit for 12 damage!

Oodramer's Slime Body halves the damage!

Taillow uses Growl! ((Roll of Drifblim = 57))
Attack of all foes falls!

Budew uses Stun Spore! ((Roll = 5))

The blonde Coordinator is biting her nails nervously, watching her little Grass type, but the Nidorina is liberally coated in the yellow spores and her Budew escapes unharmed for now.

Ariados uses Nightshade!
Nidorina is hit for 25 damage!

Chimecho uses Confusion! ((Roll = 53))

((Obedience = 15))
Oodramer uses Bubblebeam! ((Roll = 90))
Nidorina is hit for 15 damage!

Oodramer takes 9 damage from Poison!

Kirlia looks frustrated, tugs at your pant leg, and points; on second glance you can see the wall socket within easy reach of the healing machine's plug...but the Taskmaster notices her gesture and throws out another Pokemon:

"Sandslash, smash that to pieces with Rollout!"

He should have a hell of a hard time hitting it if you are standing guard, since you're so wonderfully prepared. Ariados, finish that Nidorina with Shadow Step. Oodromere, hit the Sandshrew with Bubblebeam. Kirlia, stay out of battle, in fact stay behind me, and start using Double Team as much as you can." That should make her both ready to fight and give him and the girls a point to fall back to if things turned south. Damn it, he should have been doing that earlier!

((Quick Claw Roll = 38))

Taillow perches as directed and suddenly there are dozens of healing machines and dozens of plugs. The Taskmaster swears, but his Pokemon is in motion and it's too late to call for a different attack.

Ariados uses Shadow Sneak!
Nidorina is hit for 11 damage!
Nidorina faints!

Drifblim uses Stockpile!
Drifblim's Defense rises!
Drifblim's Special Defense rises!
Drifblim Stockpiled 2!

Sandslash uses Rollout! ((Roll = 82))

The Ground type crashes through a machine-copy into the wall, sending plaster flying. To add insult to injury, a new duplicate pops into place behind it.

Budew uses Mega Drain!
It's super effective!
Sandslash is hit for 13 damage!
((And Budew is at full HP already so no healing.))

Kirlia backs further behind you, only for her foot to land right on a poisoned spike. You can tell immediately, as along with a long fiery tirade in Pokespeak her Pokeball launches itself from its usual place at one of the healing machines—the latter of which vanishes, being a duplicate. ((It's a good thing she isn't strong enough to 'talk' to non-Psychics yet, or Mark would be getting a mindful. )) All of the many many duplicates of Taillow stare at the frail Psychic type with wide eyes.

Chimecho uses Confusion! ((Roll = 52))
Sandslash is hit for 11 damage!

((Obedience Roll = 34))
Oodramer uses Bubblebeam! ((Roll = 41))
It's super effective!
Sandslash is hit for 30 damage!

Oodramer takes 9 damage from Poison!
Kirlia takes 6 damage from Poison!
Kirlia faints!

The Taskmaster looks disdainful, recalling his unconscious Nidorina. "Now that we're finished with that little setback...Sandslash, Swift now!"

That would hurt, but the machine should still be standing... and if it was standing and still capable of healing... "Tailow, take Houndoom's pokeball and put it in the machine!" Unfortunately for Mark, Kirlia was now unconscious and without a pokeball... which meant that he couldn't heal her until long after the battle was over. Fortunately, her attempt to heal herself had given him a good idea, and he planned to use it. Also fortunately, it seemed that anything Tailow touched became a mirror image, which meant that even if the pokeball was placed in the right machine, he should be able to heal his pokemon without revealing its location.

"Alright, battle plans for everyone else! Ariados, hit Sandslash with Nightshade! Oodromere hit it with bubblebeam!" Those two should do more than enough damage to finish it. "Girls, focus your fire on his other pokemon. Try to confuse and paralyze it or break down its defenses."

((Very good. ))

Taillow zips from his perch to snatch the Pokeball from your hand, temporarily leaving the machine unguarded...not that it matters with the incoming Swift. Taillow zips back just as quickly with the ball (the 'dex informs you he's using Quick Attack) and drops it into the machine while in the background the balloon-like Drifblim shrinks in size.

Taillow then looks absolutely confused as to what to do next.

Fortunately the Coordinator with the Chimecho comes to the rescue, having used the brief period of Taillow's absence to locate the real machine, she hits the button to activate it, mere seconds before the barrage of stars hits.

((Quick Claw Roll = 72))

Sandslash uses Swift!
Taillow is hit for 43 damage!
Budew is hit for 32 damage!
Oodramer is hit for 43 damage!

Oodramer faints!

The last ding is almost drowned out; the Coordinator cries as the attack knocks the machine away from her hands. Luckily the machine itself appears to only have sustained minor damage, and after a little patting around she's located the real one and throws you Houndoom's ball.

Budew uses Stun Spore! ((Roll = 29))
Drifblim was Paralyzed!
It may not be able to attack!

Due as much to luck in the confined quarters as skill, the Budew manages to coat the Bandra Drifblim in yellow powder.

Ariados uses Nightshade!
Sandslash is hit for 25 damage!

Chimecho uses Confusion! ((Roll = 57))

Mark caught the ball after a little stumble and sent out Houndoom, tossing her Lapras and Skarmory's pokeballs as well. "Get those guys healed up too! Tailow, please hang in there and try to intercept any attacks that attack that machine! Ariados, use Nightshade on Sandslash again! Girls, you keep attacking his Drifblim... and Houndoom, if you can act already then use howl on Drifblim as well." If he could force the Taskmaster to switch out his most buffed pokemon, then all of that buffing would go away. But it would still be paralyzed when it came back out.

The girl with the Chimecho catches both balls with the ease of a practiced trainer, frantically stuffs them into the device and runs it; the healing machine lets off a worrying spark but completes the cheerful ding-ding-ding-a-ling! as normal.

((Roll = 99))
((Roll = 95))

You send out Mina's Houndoom; the dog Pokemon winces a little as he lands on poisonous spikes, but otherwise seems eager to battle. Taillow meanwhile take a protective stance over the machine.

" and Houndoom, if you can act already then use howl on Drifblim as well."

((Not even going to try rolling for that...))

Mina's Houndoom gives you a look of utter confusion, as does the blonde with the Budew.

"What are you trying to do, Howl doesn't work that way!" she exclaims, wringing her hands.

Any more she may have said is interrupted as another swath of stars comes flying through the midst of the battle; Taillow valiantly throws himself between the oncoming attack and the healing machine.

Sandslash uses Swift!
Taillow intercepts the attack!
Taillow is hit for 38 damage!
Taillow faints!
Budew is hit for 27 damage!
Budew faints!
Chimecho is hit for 19 damage!

The blonde wails as her Pokemon is knocked flying and recalls the unconscious Grass type. Perhaps more worryingly, the many copies of the healing machine vanish from existence as Taillow is likewise taken out of the fight.

Ariados uses Nightshade!
Sandslash is hit for 25 damage!

Chimecho uses Confusion! ((Roll = 24))
Drifblim is hit for 6 damage!

((Paralysis Roll = 30))
Drifblim uses Baton Pass!

The Drifblim expands as it sends a spark of energy arching into the air and is recalled. A Machoke forms in its place, which is then struck by the spark and shrinks in size.

Meanwhile the Pokeballs of Lapras and Skarmory are thrown back to you. The girl with the Chimecho waves to get her friend's attention. "Sam, throw him here!" Still sniffling the blonde throws the Budew's ball over to her companion.

Houndoom takes 11 damage from Poison!

He recalled his courageous little tailow and gives his commands. "Skarmory, use Fury Attack on his Machoke. Ariados, use Shadow step and finish off his Sandslash. Lapras, use water pulse on his Machoke. Houndoom, sorry about earlier bud. Use ember on his Machoke please." To the other girl he calls over, "Confusion on that Machoke might be nice!"

The Taskmaster sends the Drifblim back out now that its buffs have been transferred and orders it to Stockpile again. You also hear the very worrying command of "Earthquake!" but Ariados is already on it.

With the machine no longer duplicated a hundred times over, the Coordinator has managed to fish Kirlia's Pokeball out from where it fell and recalled her ((remember Kirlia sent her Pokeball flying to give you your hint earlier)) and drops it in the machine. Mark caught the balls and thought for a moment. No, he should be able to handle the rest with the pokemon he had now. He held those two on reserve and gave out his commands. "Lapras, hit his Drifblim with Confuse ray. Ariados, use Shadow Step on his Machoke, Skarmory use swift on it as well." Those were two attacks that were assured a hit. "Tailow, use peck on Machoke and Oodromere, if Machoke is still standing hit it with Bubble Beam. Otherwise, target the Drifblim. Girls, if the Machoke is down before you get a chance to hit it, then you should focus fire on his Drifblim as well." He added, calling back over his shoulder. Coordinating this was getting to be a little mentally exhausting... and his throat was getting a bit raw. He might lose his voice soon, if things kept going at this rate.

Mark:

Ariados uses Shadow Sneak! ((Roll = 78))

Ariados whizzes past the shrunken Machoke and Mark finds out that Shadow Sneak is not, in fact, an attack that can't miss.

Drifblim uses Ominous Wind!
Ariados is hit for 57 damage! ((XD))

Taillow uses Peck! ((Roll = 22))
Machoke is hit for 10 damage!
It's super effective! ((Looks like the 1-HP survival rate is high today!))

Skarmory uses Swift!
No effect!
Machoke is hit for 4 damage!

Budew uses Mega Drain! ((Roll = 100))
Attack missed!

The Budew starts jumping up and down, chattering furiously, and by the expressions on the other Pokemon those must be some impressive swear words!

Lapras uses Confuse Ray! ((Roll = 15))
Drifblim is confused!

Chimecho uses Confusion! ((Roll = 64))
Attack missed!

((Obedience Roll = 16))
Oodramer uses Bubblebeam! ((Roll = 18!))

The Machoke, already quite battered ((On its LAST BLASTED HITPOINT)) finally topples under the stream of bubbles.

Lapras takes 12 damage from Poison!
Oodramer takes 9 damage from Poison!

The Taskmaster is calling his Drifblim back over to his side.

((Toxic Spikes in effect.))

Lapras: 49/98 (Poisoned)
Ariados: 1/81
Corphish: 65/68 (recalled)
Kirlia: 50/53 (recalled)
Skarmory: 65/69
Houndoom: 0/88
Taillow: 46/50
Oodramer: 55/75 (Poisoned)

Chimecho: 64/83

Budew: 52/56

(Mist: 3 rounds remaining)
Drifblim: 157/169 (Defense up 2 levels, Special Defense up 2 levels, Evasion up 1 level, Attack down 1 level, Confused)
Nidorina: 0/104
Sandslash: 0/108
Machoke: 0/108

Mark fixed his eyes on the Drifblim and recalled Ariados. He tossed the spider pokemon's ball over to the female coordinator and told Tailow, "Intercept any attempt his pokemon makes to attack the machine." The small bird, being part normal type, would be immune to the ghost-type attack that was apparently Drifblim's strongest move ((I'm assuming, since this guy must be pretty desperate by now. XD)) "Everyone else, take this guy down. Lapras, hit it with Water Pulse. Skarmory, use Peck. Oodromere, use Bubblebeam." After a moment's hesitation, Mark sent out Corphish and Kirlia as well. "Corphish, use Bubblebeam on the Drifblim. Kirlia, use confusion on it as well." With all of these attacks going in its direction, and at least two of them having a type advantage, Drifblim should be going down rather quickly...

Mark:

((Healing Roll = 96))

((Quick Claw Roll = 19 – Of course it triggers now. ))

((Obedience Roll = 75))
Oodramer uses Bubblebeam! ((Roll = 63)) ((Roll = 62))
((Looks like that accuracy training is paying off!))
Drifblim is hit for 7 damage!

The Taskmaster has realized he's in a corner at the moment, figuratively speaking; he grabs two of the arm-like appendages on his Drifblim's body and orders it to attack the ceiling.

((Confusion Roll = 3))

The Drifblim gets a hold of itself sufficiently to unleash another Ominous Wind, and enough of the roof overhead comes down to punch a hole in it.

Taillow looks up from his protective perch over the machine, but otherwise doesn't move.

Skarmory uses Peck! ((Roll = 93))
Attack missed!

Budew uses Mega Drain! ((Roll = 98))
Attack missed!

Lapras uses Water Pulse! ((Roll = 20))
Drifblim is hit for 14 damage!

Kirlia uses Confusion! ((Roll = 71))
Drifblim is hit for 9 damage!

Chimecho uses Confusion! ((Roll = 5))
Drifblim is hit for 7 damage!

Corphish uses Bubblebeam! ((Roll = 96))
Attack missed!

Lapras takes 12 damage from Poison!
Oodramer takes 9 damage from Poison!
Kirlia takes 6 damage from Poison!
Corphish takes 8 damage from Poison!

The Drifblim is floating up, but very slowly—it looks like you might be able to get off one more round of attacks before the Taskmaster escapes.

((Toxic Spikes in effect.))

Mark watched as the Taskmaster started to float away and then was struck with an idea. "Everyone, repeat what you just did but Lapras, use Sing instead!" If his pokemon fell asleep, this Taskmaster wasn't going anywhere and he would have a nice little fall waiting for him.
