"Oh... w-well then I guess we're waiting for the same guy then!" Mark said, gesturing at the ranger with his prosthetic limb. "And, uh... if you met the nurse then I guess you know a l-little bit about this town. O-or at least what happened in the l-last few days. Um... so..." Picking up the cup of lemonade in his non-robotic limb, Mark would take a few sips and gesture for Jack to sit beside him. "Um. What's your name, and, uh, how is you day going?"

"I'm not really waiting for the ranger. Was just told to find him if I was to find anything...well, that would require his attention I guess. Haven't yet."

Jack took the offered seat with his juice, and drank a couple swallows.

"The name's Jack, and aside from the issues I had with that boat, it's been going alright. Saw a few pokemon I hadn't seen before earlier, and the elder seemed nice. How about you?"

"U-um..." Mark seemed taken aback at the question for a moment, and sat there thinking about it. Taking another sip of lemonade, Mark said, "W-well. It hasn't been really good in any way. B-but I have seen a few more pokemon despite t-the Bandra things, with the attack on the town and losing my arm and stuff... so it hasn't been all bad. Yet. D-don't really see things getting better soon." The boy said, before closing his eyes and sighing. Well that's... cheerful.

"You lost your arm in the attack? I thought you were born without it. Sorry to hear." Jack shifted around in his seat. "So you mentioned some Mina person? Is it just the two of you? Oh, and why are you waiting for the ranger?"

Mark would blink at the first part of Jack's response, before mumbling, "Um... No, not in t-that attack... Lost the arm the first time I was here. And... uh... I was going to meet up with Mina after talking with the ranger anyway, so I could introduce you two later."

"Sounds good. Does the ranger even know you're waiting for him? Here, let me help." Jack turns in the direction of the ranger. "Hey, Ranger! This guy here is looking to meet with you!" Jack shouts, pointing to Mark.

Mark and Jack:

The Ranger looks your way at Jack's call; he's sifting through the last of the receipts.

"I believe I'm done here anyway," he nods to the bartender and comes over.

"Yes, young man," the Ranger addresses Mark, "what is it you need?"

When Jack called over, Mark's face froze in the exhausted expression it had before as his head rotated to face the ranger. And then his eyes would slowly widen in horror as he realized that the ranger was coming over and he hadn't thought of what he was going to say! Grabbing his lemonade, the trainer would begin chugging it as he desperately wracked his brain for what to say. And then the ranger was there... and Mark was out of lemonade. With only half-formed words in his head, Mark would shout, "U-um, Hi!" And then, after a tense silence of maybe five seconds, his prosthetic limb would lift up and out in greeting, and he stammered out, "S-so, um, my n-name's Mark and... um... a f-friend and I sort of c-came up with a plan on how to stop p-pokemon smuggling in the town! ... O-or at least how to catch o-one of the distributors."

And in a barely audible tone, he added, "A-also, I might have an idea w-who stole from the bar..."

Mark and Jack:

Ranger Wain looks briefly puzzled. He speaks with a bit of a drawl. "You probably shouldn't be getting involved in that sort of work, Mark, it's very dangerous...wait..." He glances at Mark's arm, then looks back at his face. Something must click at that point, because he continues with, "Never mind, you're one of those trainers who were with the Starlight Squad aren't you? I'll be happy hear what you have to say. Is this your friend?" He motions to Jack. "We should probably not be talking here. But you should know there hasn't been a robbery here young man, I'm investigating a possible case of underage drinking...do you know something I don't?"

"Never mind, you're one of those trainers who were with the Starlight Squad aren't you? I'll be happy hear what you have to say. Is this your friend?"

Seeing that the ranger wasn't dismissing him out of hand, Mark seems to relax quite a bit. "N-no, this is Jack, and we just met... but s-since he mentioned t-that he talked to some of the elders, s-so I'm pretty sure he's trustworthy... Mina is the one that I'm w-working with." Mark says with a sigh.

"We should probably not be talking here. But you should know there hasn't been a robbery here young man, I'm investigating a possible case of underage drinking...do you know something I don't?"

"Oh! Well that's a lot better than I thought!" Mark says happily, before holding up a finger and saying, "So I r-recently battled a trainer whose friends looked v-varying states of inebriated. Seemed pretty u-underaged, if I remember r-right." And then, almost as if he was remembering that it was suggested, Mark would ask, "And.. um... w-where should we talk then?"

Mark and Jack:

((-1 Lemonade for Mark before I forget.))

"Were they...?" the Ranger rattles off a rough description of the three trainers Mark recalls battling earlier in the day. "But we should take this outside, or somewhere else less public." The Ranger motions for you to follow and starts to leave, drawing your attention to the fact that the tables are continuing to fill up and there's even a battle starting in the ring.

((Edit: ))

The Ranger leads you outside and away from any major traffic flows. Once you seem to be more-or-less in private, he turns to Mark. "So what was this plan of yours?"

"... Yup! T-that's what they l-looked like... almost uncannily s-so... Um... nice to meet you J-Jack! I'll come back w-when I'm done talking with the r-ranger!" Mark would say, before following the ranger out of the bar and to what was likely a scenic spot.

Despite no one really being around, he would still glance about a bit before pulling out his wallet and the card. "W-well, the boys you w-were talking about earlier were talking about pokemon they b-bought and sold t-to a guy. And t-they were... you know... a-arrogant about it and stuff. So they wagered t-their contact's number on the battle, and... er... h-here you go." He would say, holding out the phone number to the ranger with his prosthetic limb, somewhat stiffly.

"S-since I'm pretty sure the guy t-that's supplying them with their pokemon a-and... er... probably fake I.D.'s too talked to me when I c-came into town and tried to s-sell me something, I'm pretty s-sure he would recognize my voice i-if I called him. S-sort of hard to mistake my s-speech impedim-ment. You know? S-so the plan was for me to s-set up a meeting and then bust h-him in the act?" Mark said, realizing just how silly the idea might sound as he said it, and wincing at the notion. There was.. no way the ranger could really think this was a good idea, was there?

Mark would blink and ask, "W-wait, what? You think t-this is a good idea?" After letting that process in his head, the trainer would say, "... Cool. Um, is there a time that would w-work best for you as far as taking the guy in? I mean, if you already h-had plans then I w-wouldn't want to interrupt..." Mark said, getting his speach impediment slightly under control, seemingly having become at least a little more comfortable around this new authority figure. "Um... anything you had more question a-about?"

Mark:

Ranger Wain smiles, presumably at the thought that his social life might be impeded by stopping criminals.

"You might want to try this plan of yours after dark—keeps them what might get pulled into trouble otherwise out of it," he says in his drawl. "Don't want any civvies getting pulled in unsuspecting. And lots of your general low-lives like to be out and around after dark—thinks it makes them sneaky, being the only ones on the street with no witnesses. Your phone number there might not be a general low-life, but I'd wager their contacts are, and they'll be expecting it." The Ranger hmph's. "Tell you what. You tell that phone number to meet you at 10PM. I'll come around at 10:30 to round them up—10:15 if I hear fighting. You and your friend think you can manage that? And where were you planning on making this meeting?"

"A-and I was thinking behind the bar? A-as you said... low life... k-keeping to the edges of civilization... You know. Lurky, sneaky stuff." Mark would say, nodding once at the end of it. "So then... s-see you at 10:15?" There is no optimism for a peaceful resolution here.

"All right." Ranger Wain scribbles something else off on his notepad, then rips it off and hands it to you; it appears to be a phone number. "You or your friend let me know if you need anything else. And try not to go skulking in over your heads, you understand?" Shortly thereafter the Ranger takes his leave of you and departs.

((Now what do you do? ))

Mina:

Mina meanwhile scanned the local news sites, and tried Googling various combinations of 'Ceris' 'Helnith' 'Pokemon theft' and anything she thought might narrow relevant results down to the last month or so. Most of the reports she found weren't local—Team Galactic causing chaos up in Sinnoh, Pokemon poachers in some Hoenn swamps, and a single, minor story in the international news about ships disappearing off the coast of Helnith that was interesting but not what she was looking for.

(Mina reflected that it was a little scary how much death and destruction was occurring in this region without the rest of the world seeming to notice much.)

But after a while, she finally found something useful: it was a site that looked like someone had put together in their spare time—functional but not terribly fancy, it was mostly a news page with a forum. And there was the local news she was looking for:

'Shadow of Bandra cast over upcoming Contest in Landsedge' 'strange Pokemon menacing Skybreak City' 'Attack in Tidepath: number of people missing continues to climb' 'Trainer Hill administration refuse to close in face of Bandra threat' 'Pokemon illnesses out of Shatterhigh Mountains on the rise' 'Strange Howls Heard in Hillsbreak'

...and so on and so on. In the forums she finally struck gold; there were a number of threads about stolen Pokemon (and Pokemon killed, and relatives missing or killed...) but here she could cross-reference more easily, so she compiled a list of the Pokemon species gone missing in the area in the previous few weeks.

She called it quits after about a half-dozen and took a break to water her Berries while she mulled over the results.

Mark would bid the ranger farewell, seeming to be quite content with himself as he makes his way towards the bar to pick up Jack again. Humming a liitle tune (somewhat poorly, perhaps a portent of doom for a certain night in the near future), the young man would walk back into the bar with his back straight and head held high, and then begin looking about for Jack.
