Stacey follows Misty's lead. She thinks about which pokemon she'd like ready now most. Slugma, sadly, was not in the best of conditions. Grimer neither, but was still an option. The other two were in great form. She chose two of the three who would be alright, and got ready to use them.

Misty, Stacey, and Mina:

Misty leads the others down the two-track. Eventually the three trainers notice faint smoke above the tree line, clueing them in to the Grunts' proximatey. Cautious investigation allows them to spot the Bandra goons before the latter notice their presence--the goons don't seem to have learned from Misty's surprise assault, for none of the three are paying any more attention to their surroundings than they were when she went to rescue Kyle. Perhaps they assumed that Misty had only been interested in rescuing the boy, or perhaps they felt they were in no danger because the trainer that hit them earlier had been successfully chased off, but it makes little difference.

The Grunt Misty last saw chasing after the Tauros seems to have caught up with them, for they're off to the side, eyeing the smoldering cargo nervously and stamping occationally while the Grunt in question is preoccupied trying to soothe them. The Fearow that attacked Stacey is perched in a tree, watching with aloof disinterest while the other two Grunts sift through the wreckage. All three humans are griping to one another about meddling trainers and worthless brats they shouldn't have tried to take hostage while sorting through ruined boxes spilled across the ground. A small pile of 'salvaged' boxes is sitting on the two-track, and as the three watch, more items--including the occational charred Pokeball--are fished out of the mess, packed away into blackened cardboard boxes and added to the pile.

Brona let out Growlithe.

"I have a bad feeling about this," he muttered. "Besides the uncomfortable couch."

He patted the growlithe just behind its ears.

"Find out what makes that smell." he whispered.

Growlithe went off quietly.

Might she be a ghost? Brona thought.

Growlithe trots off through another door out of the sitting room, his nose in the air as he sniffs measuringly.

The old woman comes back in shortly after he vanishes, carrying a silver tea set. She sets it on the couch next to you, seeming oblivious to the possibility of crumbs or stains; on it is a pot of tea and a plate of sandwiches.

"Here you are, trainer," she says.

Further inside the house, your Growlithe lets out a whine and you hear him scratching at a door.

Brona rose and walked over to his Growlithe without saying a word to the old lady. Then patted his Growlithe on the neck again, whispering a few words to it.

"What's on the other side of this door?" Brona asked the woman, more like a demand than a question.

You go through the house and reach the door Growlithe is pawing at. The smell of decay gets stronger as you go, and it's obvious even without your Pokemon's keen nose that its source is behind the door.

"Nothing to worry yourself over trainer," the old woman's voice floats through the air, sounding reassuring. "Come and eat your sandwich."

She sounds unconcerned but the smell argues otherwise; you check the door handle and discover it's unlocked. Do you go in?

You push open the door and the smell becomes overpowering. It leads to a bedroom as neat and well-appointed as the rest of the house, with a queen-sized bed, a dresser and a single large window.

On the floor in front of the bed is the old woman.

She's been dead for at least a few days, her skull cracked open and her hair matted with dried blood. Flies buzz around the broken hole, and around the dull, lifeless eyes that stare unblinking at nothing. At the sight of her, you feel a sudden, very disorienting jolt.

For a split second the room changes. Glass shards now litter the floor; the window has been smashed, as has the mirror above the dresser. The curtains are gone, the comforter on the bed has been shredded, and a book that had been sitting on the dresser is now several dozen loose pages scattered across the room. There is--there was a Pokeball on the dresser, but judging by the decent-sized dent in the wood and the shattered fragments scattered over the top, someone took a hammer to it. If that were not enough evidence that no Pokemon did this, several sets of dirty but very human bootprints have disturbed the glass shards and soiled the floor.

A split second later the room is back to how it was when you first entered; bed neatly made, floor swept and completely ordinary except for the smell and the corpse on the floor.

Seeing the Fearow there, all on its own, was not a good sign, by any means. Her hand changes position. She grabs two pokeballs, and gets them ready instead of her initial choices. The actions Misty has taken worried her though. Perhaps there wouldn't be enough time now. She has to try, at the very least. She steps back, and readies herself for a fight. She gets ready to call out Slugma for another Yawn at the Fearow. That, and Grimer to, once more, attempt to disable it.

Misty, Stacey and Mina:

The Grunts burst out laughing at Misty's speech, and even the Fearow is cawing derisively. The trainer of the Sandslash sneers back:

"And what are you going to do, little girl? Run away again?" The other Grunts guffaw as he calls out his Sandslash. "You may have caught us with our pants down last time, brat, but this time we'll crush you--and your little friends too!"

The Grunts are so busy gloating over their assumed victory that Stacey's attack takes them by surprise.

Grimer uses Disable!
Attack failed!

Slugma uses Yawn!
Slugma’s Yawn made Fearow drowsy!

A gust of wind-blown sand washes over the Grunts before they can recover, and a second shortly after that.

(Mina takes the distraction to whisper to Stacey: "Stacey, he has to use an attack before you can Disable it! Nice try though.")

Pidgey uses Sand Attack!
Tauros’ (1) Accuracy falls!
Tauros’ (2) Accuracy falls!
Sandslash’s Accuracy falls!
Fearow's Keen Eye prevents Accuracy loss!

Sandshrew uses Sand Attack!
Tauros’ (1) Accuracy falls!
Tauros’ (2) Accuracy falls!
Sandslash’s Accuracy falls!
Fearow's Keen Eye prevents Accuracy loss!

"Hey, no fair! You're supposed to be the good guys!" the Grunt with the Tauros protests.

"Being good doesn't mean we have to be nice, especially to slime like you." Mina retorts cooly. Inwardly she was boiling, but hiding it reasonably well. I'll knock the snot out of you myself for insulting my friend you pea-brained waste of--!!

Brona:

The old woman is still standing over the tea set when you return.

"Happened, young trainer?" She blinks uncertainly.

Now that you know for sure something's up, you notice there are several things subtly 'off' about her. Her eyes don't look right, and after a second or two you realize they haven't adjusted at all to the change in light. Her movements are a bit too fluid, too quiet; she seems to flow when she walks with no arthritis or stiffness. And most tellingly of all, she doesn't seem to be breathing...

Your Growlithe growls and starts barking at her.

"Don't yap at me, pup; I haven't harmed him," she addresses your Growlithe sternly. As with her monologing earlier, she doesn't seem to realize you can hear her. "Help me with Junior and all will be well."

Growlithe replies with furious yapping, his fur standing straight up and his fangs bared.

"Very well then. I'll tell him."

The room blurs, and suddenly you are floating. There is a crash, the sound of glass breaking; walls pass by you as insubstantial as mist, and you arrive in the bedroom to see no fewer than six human men and women forcing their way in via the window. They are dressed in black and purple, a spiky letter 'B' emblazoned on their clothes, and one of them is carrying the heavy-looking hammer that smashed the window glass.

"Spread out and find it," the Grunt in the lead orders.

The old woman comes through the door, moving swiftly in spite of obviously-aching joints; you feel a surge of protective feelings well up at her arrival. She notices you, but the Grunts do not, and with a silent glance she orders you to remain hidden.

"What do you want?" the old woman demands in her papery voice. It is clear she wants to try to talk this out.

"Where is it?" the man in the lead demands.

"I don't know what you're talking about," the old woman replies. A few of the Grunts surround her, trying to intimidate her, including the one with the hammer.

"The Pokemon egg!" The Grunt leader yanks a wad of papers out of his pocket and waves them in her face. "We intercepted the receipt just the other day. One Pokemon egg, from one Breeder Spencer, delivered here. Hand it over or pay the price."

The woman is silent for what seems like a very long time.

"I'm sorry," she says slowly, "but I can't in good conscious give such a young impressionable creature over to the likes of you."

"Maybe we forgot to introduce ourselves," the lead Grunt snarls, getting right up into her face. "
We're Team Bandra! And we take what we like."

The hammer falls. There is the sick sound of snapping bone and then so does the woman, bleeding out over the floor until her breathing stops and she dies.

"Spread out and find it!" he commands.

You can't take it any more and attack. One of the Grunts is struck by your supernatural chill and collapses, unable to move. The other Grunts erupt into confusion.

"What was that?!!" "Where did it go?" "Did you see that?!?"

"Everyone outside!" the lead Grunt orders at last. Two of them grab their paralyzed compatriot and the humans tramp through the house onto the front yard. You chase them as they go, furious at what they have done.

Once outside, the Grunts pull out Pokeballs. Over half-a-dozen Rattata and a pair of Sandshrew materialize--all young and obviously inexperienced.

"Sandshrew, Scratch!" one Grunt commands.

The attack passes through you and does nothing.

"Idiot!" One of the other Grunts shoves the one who gave the command. "It's a Ghost type! They're immune to Normal attacks!"

There is a very awkward pause. Apparently none of the Grunts' Pokemon have any non-Normal moves.

"So...what should we do?"

"Catch it!" replies another Grunt with a grin. He throws a Pokeball at you.

There is light, and a tingling sensation--then the tingling disperses all at once along with the light, and the Grunt stares gaping at you. The Pokeball falls harmlessly to the ground.

"Wha--why didn't it work???" A few more Grunts try. None of them succeed, and instead of breaking, the Pokeballs refuse to even take you in in the first place.

"It must have a ball already," the Grunt's leader concludes. "Frank, Edwin, Heather--go inside and find--"

And then you make him topple over, asleep.

It is a rush of passing walls and empty rooms after that. You grab the egg and hide it in the woods, then return to harass the Grunts. An exhausting game of hide-and-seek follows, but eventually one of the Grunts shouts "I found it! I found the thing's Pokeball!" in a voice that echos through the entire house.

Forewarned, you return to the woods to hide and watch over the egg. Eventually the Grunts give up looking for you, and the sounds of looting start coming from the house as the Grunts grab everything they can carry and destroy most of what they can't.

It is sunset by the time they leave. You drift back to the abandoned building only to find it isn't abandoned just yet; the Grunt with the hammer is staring meditatively at your Pokeball, now sitting on the top of the bedroom dresser.

Abruptly he seems to make up his mind and shouts to the not-quite-empty house:

"I know you're here
somewhere Pokemon! And mark my words--we'll be back for you!"

The hammer falls again and your Pokeball shatters to pieces across the top of the dresser.

The vision is interrupted as the apparition mimicking the old woman suddenly shrieks in pain. The trio of Ghost-types that attacked you on the path have apparently followed you here.

Sableye uses Astonish! ((Roll = 14))

The apparition of the old woman is stunned by the attack and the room reverts. The furniture is now shredded and the fire vanishes with the drapes, leaving only the pale, haze-filtered sunlight to brighten the room. The tea set turns out to be a couple of cheap ceramic mugs and a large tupperware bowl (though amusingly there does seem to be tea in it). You can also read the vanished text your Pokedex was trying to tell you before, including the latest entry:

Gastly is hit for 30 damage!
Gastly flinches!

The gem-eyed Dark type snickers as the old woman dissolves into fog...fog with eyes and a circular black core. Behind you your Growlithe is being dragged backwards by the bundle of ghostly rags, until he snaps at it and it lets go with a shriek. Both it and the Sableye retreat to the door where the handpuppet is dragging the blanket-wrapped egg out the door, having used your borrowed flashback as a distraction to snatch it. The three of them manage to pick it off the ground and vanish out the door with it, all while making taunting noises. Even without understanding a word the tone is clear: 'Neener neener you can't catch us!' The Gastly chases after them with an angry bellow.

Misty, Stacey and Mina:

"Pidgey, Quick Attack that Fearow! Sandshrew, help Stripes, Sand Attack!" Mina calls.

Stacey successfully swaps Slugma for Rattata as the battle is joined.

Pidgey uses Quick Attack!
Fearow takes 9 damage!

Fearow uses Fury Attack! ((Roll = 8, 22))

The straffing tactics the large Flying type employed against Stacey are repeated, and the Fearow hits whatever foes it can reach. ((Roll 76, 17))

Pidgey takes 20 damage!
Sandshrew takes 17 damage!

Then, in a repeat performance, it falls asleep in mid-air. The Grunt who had been watching the sky during Misty's rescue of Kyle--presumably the bird's trainer--looks sheepish as it glides to earth. Then the other Grunts' Pokemon attack.

Tauros (1) uses Rage! ((Roll = 24, 67))
Sandshrew takes 17 damage!

Tauros (2) uses Rage! ((Roll = 15, 45))
Rattata takes 18 damage!

Sandslash uses Defense Curl!
Sandslash's Defense rose!

The Sandslash's trainer seems to be going for the same tactic as he used against Misty.

Stripes uses Sand Attack!
Tauros’ (1) Accuracy falls!
Tauros’ (2) Accuracy falls!
Sandslash’s Accuracy falls!
Fearow's Keen Eye prevents Accuracy loss!

Sandshrew uses Sand Attack!
Tauros’ (1) Accuracy falls!
Tauros’ (2) Accuracy falls!
Sandslash’s Accuracy falls!
Fearow's Keen Eye prevents Accuracy loss!

Grimer uses Poison Gas! ((Roll = 83))
Attack missed!

Round results:

Stripes: 41/41
Slugma (recalled): 7/35
Grimer: 28/47
Pidgey: 9/51
Sandshrew: 5/39
Rattata: 18/36

Tauros 1: 80/80 (Accuracy down 4 levels)
Tauros 2: 80/80 (Accuracy down 4 levels)
Sandslash: 88/88 (Accuracy down 4 levels)
Fearow: 75/96 (Asleep)

----------------

Brona:

You and your Pokemon charge out the door, and before any of the Ghost types can react your Growlithe delivers a nasty Bite to the Shuppet's head. The strength behind the super-effective hit coupled with the Ghost type's previous injuries knocks it out instantly. ((In other words, I'm not going to roll it. Shuppet only had eight HP left! )) The surprise attack combined with Growlithe's speed is sufficient for him to Flame Wheel Sableye, but not before the bundle of rags pulls off a Spite.

Misdreavus uses Spite!
Growlithe's Bite was decreased by 4!

Growlithe uses Flame Wheel! ((Roll = 36))
Sableye takes 24 damage!

Gastly manages to Lick Sableye again for pitiful damage before the latter gets its say in the fight.

Gastly uses Lick! ((Roll = 10))
Sableye takes 5 damage!
Sableye is Paralyzed! It may not be able to attack!

((Roll = 32))
Sableye uses Scratch!
Growlithe is hit for 7 damage!

Growlithe: 49/58

Gastly: 6/36

Sableye: 9/44 (Paralyzed)
Misdreavus: 35/35

((YOU HAVE TO GIVE BEFORE YOU CAN RECEIVE! You still haven’t replied to the last update I gave you. But I’ll give you a nudge so you know where you are now.))

You finish your breakfast and meander out of the cafeteria, no particular destination in mind.

On a whim, you follow after a large knot of Grunts that seem to know where they’re going and end up in a large enclosure—it’s too big to really be considered a ‘room’—whose floor could easily hold a couple of Gyms.

Sure enough, on closer inspection it’s got the markings for at least three official arenas painted on the floor, and several Grunts are already training their Pokemon by sparring with one another. A couple Grunts with Mankey are practicing against the punching bags along one wall, and around the boxing ring in the nearby corner a small crowd has gathered. A man with a Chatot on his shoulder is watching from a wallside bench, along with a scattering of other curious onlookers.

Growlithe charges Sableye again. The gem-eyed Dark type bares its triangular teeth, its movements stiff from Paralysis.

Growlithe uses Flame Wheel! ((Roll = 85))

Sableye faints!

Gastly meanwhile is staring down Misdreavus, the last hostile Ghost type very nervous without its compatriots to back it up. Gastly’s eyes start to glow…
