Stacey eyes the sandwich laying upon the ground. The simplicity of the whole thing was a little amusing, though it still had to be handled with care. She stepped closer, taking a seat on the ground, near the sandwich.

"Alright. Let's give everyone what they want, shall we?"

She reaches for the foiled sandwich, desiring to split all portions, among those involved, evenly.

((At grandparents'. Updates will probably be erratic until Monday.))

Stacey:

The wild Pokemon move as if to protest when you sit next to the sandwich, but are held at bay by your Rattata and the unspoken presence of the rest of your team.

"Alright. Let's give everyone what they want, shall we?"

They watch you curiously. You split the sandwich into thirds and the tear the tinfoil wrapping in half, then give a piece to each of the quarreling Pokemon.

The wild Pokemon look at you with something like disbelief and then scatter with their pieces. The Rattata disappear into the brush and the Murkrow take off into a nearby tree, cawing with glee over their prizes.

----------------

Brona:

The haze doesn’t lift as you go down, but nor does it seem to get any thicker. To your left, at the edge of visibility, you think you see a pair of eyes...

Gastly uses Hypnosis! ((Roll 91))

Your Pokedex beeps at you unexpectedly and for a moment you feel disoriented, but you succesfully shake the feeling off. The eyes fade away. Or perhaps they were never there in the first place?

Then off to your right you hear a shriek.

Misty is unsure what the little bug is trying to convey, but doesn't think it can be good.  "Kyle is in trouble?  Something is hurting the forest?" she turns the pokedex on and tries to scan the leaf.  "Can I pick you up and put you on my shoulder so you can lead me to where I need to go?  Would you be willing to travel with me from here on?"  Desperately trying to understand the little pokemon, she is just shooting in the dark.

"Kyle is in trouble?"

A rapid nod.

"Something is hurting the forest?"

Hesitation, then the Wiliter shakes its head uncertainly. Clearly it hasn't really considered that possibility. The leaf scans as an ordinary leaf.

"Can I pick you up and put you on my shoulder so you can lead me to where I need to go?  Would you be willing to travel with me from here on?"

The Wiliter nods and quickly climbs up to your shoulder, then gestures east--the direction the other Pokemon are fleeing away from.

Misty keeps one eye on the little pokemon for directions, and quickly makes her way to where it leads.  As she hurries toward her fate, she gets her pokeballs prepped to be easily pulled.  Her mind is screaming at her that this is suicide.  Heart pumping she pushes on, unwilling to leave this little pokemon and it's trainer to fend for themselves.

The forest is unimpressed and unyeilding as she tries to push her way through.  Treebranches, vines, bushes, and rocks try their best to block her path.  Having to be careful that a stray branch does not knock the little bug off of her shoulder, she is going slower then she normally would.

Your Growlithe spits fire into the surrounding haze, briefly burning away the fog before the embers die out. Most of them hit nothing but earth, but one connects. What looks like a small handpuppet takes the attack full force before being swallowed up by the haze.

Something else yanks at your hair before sailing off into the fog with a shrill giggle reminicent of the shriek you heard earlier--the brief glimpse you get of it looks like a floating bundle of dark rags. A scrabbling sound behind you suggests that there's at least one more out there...

Your Pokedex beeps again. ((Roll = 51))

"Well done, Rattata, but I'm wondering if something else is going on here. Come, let's explore some more."

Stacey looks around the immediate area for anything else unusual.

((Back!! ))

Misty:

The little caterpillar has to ask you to stop several times to question passing Pokemon. Whatever has spooked them is not serious enough that they completely ignore your presence, but several of them recognize the little Wiliter well enough to chatter directions before resuming their flight.

By the time you find the source of their agitation, you are battered and scratched from forcing your way through the underbrush.

A pair of Tauros are hitched up to a wagon, but it isn't moving. A couple Bandra Grunts are arguing next to one of the wheels—or what's left of it, as it's broken. A third is watching the sky some distance off, ignoring them.

From the wagon's interior comes a loud sniffling. "Willie!" a young boy's voice sobs.

The Wiliter on your shoulder makes a strained, anxious sound; apparently that was Kyle.

"Shut up, kid," snaps one of the Grunts.

"Ah, ignore him; it's not like there's anyone out here to hear."

"Well we'd be rid of the brat already if someone knew how to drive--"

The Grunts continue arguing, the noise more than covering your approach. As you are still in the underbrush and the three of them are rather preoccupied, none of them notice you.

What do you do?

----------------

Brona:

Your eyes catch the screen before you start the scan, and for a split second you see the last thing the Pokedex picked up.

Gastly uses Hypnosis!

The rest of the text dissolves before your eyes.

The scan of the area behind you seems to be unaffected, however.

Pokemon: Sableye
Level: 15
 HP: 44
 Attack: 32
 Def: 32
 Sp. Attack: 29
 Sp. Def: 29
 Speed: 24

Shuppet uses Screech!

The last is accompanied by a very shrill unpleasant sound from the direction of the hand puppet. It seems oddly deadened in the fog, however, and Growlithe looks to be unaffected. The Sableye darts out of the haze and tries to attack your Pokemon (the Pokedex declares the move to be Fury Swipes) when the jewel-eyed Dark type suddenly reacts as though it has been deluged with ice water.

Gastly uses Lick! ((Roll = 97))
Sableye takes 6 damage!

A papery but quite outraged voice emerges from behind you a few seconds later.

"MISCREANTS! SAVAGES! BE GONE!"

What seems to be the source emerges from the haze; a frail-looking older woman with wispy hair and a frown on her face. She hardly seems to notice you as she sails past, her elderly fury being directed solely at your assailants. They retreat deeper into the haze at her approach, snickering and cackling, clearly taunting her.

She mutters something under her breath and you can barely make out "troublemakers...will be back..." before she turns to you. With an oddly hollow smile, she says, "Hello trainer. What brings you here?"

----------------

Stacey:

Wandering in the woods, you start to notice that everything has gone very quiet. A couple of Sandshrew dart past you, fleeing southwest.

Nothing else seems to be out of the ordinary, until you come across a bare path with very little vegetation. It is here that you find tracks:

Too small to belong to an adult, they meander around at first, as though their progenitor were looking for something. Then they become farther apart and it looks as though the owner tried to run for a few paces before they vanish abruptly, right in the middle of a patch of bare earth. Directly above is a stretch of branchless clear sky, and to either side of the last print are marks in the sandy soil from a pair of very great wings…

Misty absolutely hates the idea of sneaking around, but does not want to put the boy in danger if possible to avoid.

Sneaking as best she can to the door of the cell, she brings the little Wilter to the locking mechinism.  Whispering she asks "Think you can melt this door open?" She really doesn't want to try to sneak the key, so she prays this will work.

Misty:

You make your way silently around the wagon and in through the back. There is no door, it’s unbarred and completely open, as is the front—you can see the back of the third Grunt as he watches the sky through the cloth arch that makes up the wagon cover. All he’d have to do to spot you is turn around.

The interior of the wagon is dim and musty; except for an aisle down the center, most of the floor is covered with boxes.

You also see Kyle; he’s sitting in a makeshift cage near the back that looks like it was lashed together from mesh pen panels—the sort used by Breeders to contain very young Pokemon. His wrists are tied with thick rope, his clothes are dirty and torn up around the shoulders, but he seems largely unhurt. What passes for a door is held shut with a length of plastic-coated steel cable, held in place by an ordinary padlock.

You ask the boy’s Wiliter if it can melt the lock and the little bug looks doubtful. It crawls off you onto the face of the door and twists its body around so the pores on its back are facing the lock. Kyle looks up at the noise.

“Willie?” the little boy’s eyes are red and he’s obviously been crying. He looks from his Pokemon to you. “Who’re you?”

The little Wiliter meanwhile seems to be concentrating very hard. Its natural heat is more than sufficient to make flames, but it can’t seem to manage the amount of control and power necessary to keep a steady stream of fire going. ((Translated into Common: it doesn’t know any Fire-type attacks.)) It tries anyway for its trainer’s sake, and gradually the metal heats and the stench of burning plastic fills the air, but it’s slow going.

The Bug-type has been feverishly trying to burn the lock away for almost a full minute when outside, one of the Grunts arguing suddenly breaks off. “—and if you had just—what’s that smell?”

There is a pause. Wiliter freezes in place, and Kyle goes very pale.

“Maybe the brat messed his pants.”

“Nuh-uh, it smells like…” You hear the Grunt sniff. “Like burning…”

The other Grunt seems to shrug. He sounds dismissive. “Meh, check it out then. And see if you can’t dig up a screwdriver while you’re at it.”

You hear footsteps approaching the back of the wagon.

((Now what? ))

Hoping that it is sufficiant she pulls the little bug away and whispers "GET BACK." as soon as the boy does she kicks the cell as hard as she can.  Hopefully the heat has loosened it enough.  If not she gets out her pokemon, because they are going to have to fight it out.

Kyle scoots away quickly as you kick. The lock gives, but the steel cable doesn’t; Kyle pales further and struggles to untie himself—

—and then the Grunt comes in. His eyes go wide.

INTRUDER! WE’VE GOT A LOOSE TRAINER IN OUR MIDST!”

You hear loud exclamations and swearing from the two Grunts outside, and rapid footsteps. The Grunt that discovered you throws out a Pokeball.

Bandra Grunt sent out Sandslash!

----------------

Stacey:

You make it to the top of the tree and look around again. To the north and east you once again spot something flying over the tree tops. It’s closer this time, and you can make out a spiky red crest in addition to the broad wings.

It also seems to have spotted you, as it is approaching with hostile speed.

"Oh dear."

Stacey climbed as quickly as she could back down the tree, and, near the end, jumped the rest of the way, nearly falling over. She looked toward the winged pokemon, then to rattata. Ranged was not a great option for the rat.

"Rattata, return!"

After recalling Rattata, she darted away from the trees. In case fire was to be needed, she didn't want trees to be around. She took out a pokeball, sending Slugma into the field.

"Slugma, we could use some smog, if you would please!"

Hoping to get a quick scan of the pokemon before the smog blocked vision, she took out her pokedex, and attempted to figure out what was coming at them.

((Last update for tonight. Tired.))

Misty:

Growlithe’s body is engulfed in fire as the pup attacks the steel cable with Flame Wheel. The cable, while strong enough to withstand the inexpert flames of the little Wiliter, was obviously intended to deter humans as it melts easily under the focused attack of the more powerful Fire type. Due to the close proximity of three humans and four Pokemon, however, and the enclosed space, the attack causes one of the nearby boxes to catch fire.

Meanwhile Hedge squares off against his evolved form in the cramped center aisle.

Sandslash uses Defense Curl!
Sandslash’s Defense rises!

Hedge uses Sand Attack!
Sandslash’s Accuracy falls!

Out of the corner of your eye, you notice the other Grunt from the argument slip behind you to the front of the wagon as the first round of battle begins. He hastily starts unhooking the two Tauros. The third Grunt is still looking to the sky, but now he’s swearing and muttering under his breath.

----------------

Stacey:

You make it to the ground just in time.

A winged shadow passes overhead as you call out Slugma. It’s maker is brown and rather disreputable-looking, with a red crest and a long, wicked-looking beak. The air is quickly filled with concealing smog, but you still manage a good reading of the approaching Pokemon. It yields the following data:

Pokemon: Fearow
Level: 33
 HP: 96
 Attack: 74
 Def: 58
 Sp. Attack: 55
 Sp. Def: 55
 Speed: 81

The broad-winged bird dives at you through the smog and attacks.
