Semi-spoiler:

Well I finished Berserk up to its current point. I don't like reading in small, unsatisfying doses so I'll probably forget about it and hopefully remember about it again a few years down the road, assuming I still have interest in this sort of thing.

The Retribution Arc was a disappointment compared to the Golden Arc. The main villain in it, that priest dude, was retarded and I never got engrossed in it, though it did contain some key plot elements for the future. The story resumed its glory with the Millennium Falcon Arc and into the Fantasia Arc. I'm glad they introduced spellcasters into the story because Gatts's ambitions seemed hopeless to the point that it was depressing to read, granted they still seem hopeless but at least his immediate conditions aren't so rough. It's a great story. My one significant criticism is that Griffith has become mellow to the point that it's lame. When I read something I like the antagonist to be just as interesting as the heroes of the story, but I'm mostly just interested in Gatts and his companions. The way Griffith just mellowly and dispassionately annihilates everything that tries to face him has lost its eerie effect and has become somewhat trite to read. I suppose the underlying theme throughout the story is the inevitability of destiny and Gatts's desperate denial of that, but I'd still prefer if Griffith took a backseat role in the story so that we can focus on a flesh and blood antagonist that has struggles of their own. There is no struggle with Griffith. As far as foes, Zodd is currently the only character that is fairly interesting, though he's lost some of his appeal also ever since he started riding ***** seat behind Griffith. Overall I'd give the manga a 9/10.

edit: On a sidenote, even with a missing eye, arm, and a billion scars, it's funny how the female characters all have the hots for Gatts , especially the little witch girl. Good thing Gatts doesn't succumb to the pedo-calling.

Yeah pretty much. I like the current team but the storyline has taken a larger scale now that Griffith is back in the game. I think it's a nice contrast seeing how he creates a hopelessly strong empire and earns the hearts of the people - while Guts has it easier lately it looks more impossible to deal with Griffith by the moment. I appreciate the larger picture but I'm pretty sure the story will soon focus on Guts' quest soon enough.

Am I the only one that thinks that "The worlds strongest Disciple Kenichi" has kinda taken a hard turn for the ecci since that akabanetou fight? I mean ok maybe the mangaka is going for it to get more votes I don't know but it gets really annoying... Every single chapter there are panty shots or someone atleast half naked sesh man. It is such a great manga. But dunno ever since the artstyle changed (everything to a lot rounder and the eyes got even bigger) I don't like it as much... pity since it really was a great manga.

I'm one of the people here who read manga and watch anime.
Anime since I was a kid though I was oblivious to that.
Manga since fall 2008.
Here's a list of what I've read since then and short notes of each:

Angel Sanctuary, shoujo
I looked long and hard for my first manga to read. This one caught my eye. The art is simply amazing. You oculd take most frames and hang them on your wall. The art style is traditional with beautiful women and pretty men but not disturbingly so. It's a love story about a teenage boy named Setsuna Mudou and his sister Sarah Mudou that gets a lot more complicated when angels and demons take sudden interest in them. Death, love, fight and betrayal, oh sweet, sweet betrayal.
So in short:
Angels, demons, forbidden love...What's not to like?
10/10

Magic Knight Rayearth, shoujo
My second manga. Simply because I had seen the anime and loved it. The art is really good, traditional style. The series can be broken into two parts. The first part's story is about three girls being teleported to a foreign land of fantasy and magic, Cephiro. There they learn that they are fated to become Magic Knights of the legends and save the world. It is mostly adventure and light comedy at times. The second part is after the come back to Cephiro another time to find it a ruined wasteland filled with monsters under attack from three neighbouring countries. It's a more character orientated and serious than the first part.
So in short:
Magic, Swords, Cool battles...Pretty good but see the anime first.
7/10

Black Lagoon, seinen
A friend suggested it to me. There is already a review by bixie about it. It has good art, rather realistic style. Story is light but rough and cruel at the same time. It doesn't take itself too seriously but it portrays some really cruel things and reflects on many problems of the world. It's about a japanese businessman who gets kidnapped and finds out his company is ready to dispose of him. He decides to turn coat and join his kidnappers living the life of a questionable transporter in a city filled with bad blood, Roanapur.
So in short:
Guns, explosions, violence...Any man in his right mind would love it, kids stay away.
9/10

Soul Eater, shonen
Azzie got me reading this. Art is mostly decent. Action comedy series. Regular shonen, characters are idiots, lots of stupid ideas, etc. The idea is that there is a school for people who can turn to weapons and their masters. They hunt down witches and people on the way of becoming evil demons.
So in short:
Teenagers, fights, bad humour...Has it's moments but there are better series out there.
6/10

Jisatsu Circle, seinen
Stumbled upon it by accident. Art is good. Style is a mix of realistic and bizarre, which works well for this. The story is about the life of a school girl who is going through hard times. It starts with a bunch of school girls jumping under a train. Not a series for kids. If you are under 20 serious thinking should be done before picking this up. Even still if you are easily shocked leave this one alone. It is a very good series but it's also something some people should never read.
So in short:
Dark, depressing, mysterious...Not for the faint of heart but if you think you can handle it you're in for one heck of a ride.
8/10

Neon Genesis Evangelion, josei
Everybody knows NGE. Even I did before touching anything animeish or mangaish. It's something everyone must read. If you get it or not is another story though. Art is good. Pretty much your everyday manga looks. Story is another thing though. At first it seems like your regular shonen with mechas and immature teenagers. But there is much more below the surface. It's a psychological mess. That's where the real value of this is. In all those obscure references and untold tensions. That's also why I categorise it as josei, definitely not shonen. You can read it when you are fifteen and enjoy but read it again when you've got even some sort of life experience and you'll be blown away.
So in short:
Mechas, conspiracies, psychological mess...A must read for everyone.
9/10

Neon Genesis Evangelion Gakuen Datenroku, shonen
Alternate universe supernatural school story that has nothing to do with NGE than the looks and names of the characters. Art is enjoyable with a nice touch of simplification to it. Story is that a normal guy gets dragged into a fight with angels wanting to destroy humanity and an organisation with superpowered people wanting to stop them. Your regular run of the mill shonen. Found it pretty enjoyable. Nothing spectacular.
So in short:
Teenagers, fights, supernatural...A good way to pass time.
6/10

Neon Genesis Evangelion Angelic Days, shoujo
An actual alternate universe NGE story. It has the same characters. But different storyline. Much lighter world. More everyday life. More emphasis on relationships. Art is decent, nothing spectacular. Shinji and Asuka are chilhood friends, Shinji is living with his parents, Rei and Kaworu are new students to the class. All in all, a happy, quite regular school life story with the EVA added to it. Liked it.
So in short:
Teenagers, relationships, everyday life...Rather enjoyable read.
7/10

Neon Genesis Evangelion Ikari Shinji Ikusei Keikaku, shonen
Another alternate universe NGE story. Has decent art. Some ups and downs at times. Story resembles the one in Angelic Days with a lot of similarities. Shinji and Asuka are childhood friends. Shinji is living with his parents. A lot of school drama. Rei is Shinji's distant relative who moves to their house. The take on all of that is a little more comical and the series is as close to shonen as any romantic comedy can be.
So in short:
Teenagers, conspiracies, everyday life...Light-hearted reading for NGE fans.
7/10

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, shonen
This series seems to border between seinen and shonen at times. The original novels and anime are directed to older audience but this one's taken down a notch on the thinking and more on the comedy. The spotlight is also changed from Kyon to Haruhi. Art is mostly decent. Story revolves around a high-school girl, Haruhi Suzumiya, who is not interested in anything normal. All she cares about is supernatural or something other odd. She is a very dedicated person to her goals. That creates an lot of comedic situations that the series is based on.
So in short:
Comedy, school life, Haruhi...Watch the anime instead. Only come back after if even then.
5/10

Elfen Lied, seinen
Now were talking! Thanks to some events I picked this one up. And boy was it a good choice. The art is good but it has a serious cute girl syndrome with huge eyes. Nothing disturbing and fits the series rather well. Story is about a high-school cousins, Kouta and Yuka, who take in a girl about their age who happens to have horns, an ability to kill people with invisible "hands", oh and she has a split personality. There's a big bad organisation after her. Leads to a lot of bloodsheath. The story manages to create a lot of moral dilemmas and builds up the sympathy for different persons masterfully. Very good telling. A word of warning. The series is a very graphic one with lots and lots of gore. If you're easily disturbed don't read. Dismemberment is a norm not an exception.
So in short:
Violence, tragedy, horror...In other words, everything you can hope for.
9/10

Karin, shoujo
Picked up a random book from a team mate's closet in the army. Turns out it wasn't a bad pick. Karin, or Chibi Vampire as it's called in some countries, is a story about a vampire girl who isn't your typical vampire, instead of drinking blood she produces it. She is also lacking most of the vampire characteristics, no problem with sunlight, no superhuman abilites, no sleeping during the day etc. She does have fangs for biting people and injecting them with blood though. This unique condition of hers of course has her family very concerned about her. She goes to school lke a normal girl and falls in love with a normal human. This brings even more problems. The series has a lot of comedy and drama but it's mainly a romance series. The characters are good and art is good so what it lacks in story it makes up in characters.
So in short:
Vampires, romance, comedy...A nice package that is bound to give something to everyone.
8/10

Ikki Tousen, seinen
Stumbled upon this in an half accident. Lucky accident I'd say. Ikki Tousen or Battle Vixen as it's called in some countries is a manga about a bunch of school waging war against each other. The students carry a thing called magatama on their ear. It holds the spirit of a long gone warrior. These students are martial artists fighting each other daily for whatever reason. They engage in fights, all kinds of political meddlings, affairs, treasons, in other words, everything a real war has. The series icludes a lot of ecchi but in the manga it's not that disturbing as it is in the anime. The art is really good. And I do mean really good. It isn't absolutely stunning but it's pretty damn neat. You almost forgive for all that ecchi when it's that well drawn, almost. The series starts off as pretty comedic action. It gets more serious as it progresses but it never loses that comedic side. The weight just moves from comedy to story progression.
So in short:
Fights, politics, half-naked chicks...All in all a very entertaining series.
9/10

School Days, seinen
School Days...School Days...I'm not sure what i should say about this one. It's another must for anyone. It's one of those series you'll either love or hate. You might be hitting your head against the wall every five minutes but it's worth it in the end. It's a story about high school kids. That's all I can say without spoiling it. If you ever decide to read it just don't read any spoilers or it's ruined. The art is rather good, big eyed characters style. There is just one problem. You can only enjoy school days first once. That means choosing either anime or manga first. And I believe choosing to watch the anime is a better choice than reading the manga. Manga does have a better span of events towards the ending but it lacks that something the anime gets across. Still, it's a good one.
So in short:
School days, school days, school days...Anime is probably a better choice for the first.
8/10

As you can see I've mostly read seinen and shoujo with a few shonen and josei to add.
I find shonen to be annoyingly immature or having what misty called bbb-syndrome too often. I don't really enjoy the usual art style in shonen either.
Usual Josei doesn't seem bad from what little I've read/seen but it just tends to be harder to scourge for interesting stories.
I've also read darker than black but it's just a short side track of the anime instead of a series so I didn't include it there.
Also I'm facing a dilemma with one series. It's an interesting situation to say at least...

I hope mvass is right, because according to wikipedia:

Quote:
The stories tend to be about everyday experiences of women living in Japan. Though there are some that cover high school, most cover the lives of adult women. The style also tends to be a more restrained, realistic version of shōjo manga, keeping some of the wispy features and getting rid of the very large sparkly eyes. There are exceptions in the style described above, but what defines josei is some degree of stylistic continuity of comics within this particular demographic (the same is true with different demographics that have different stylistic tendencies).

Well I'm no expert. But seinen tends to involve a lot more violence, death, nudity, sex and such. True there are those in evangelion but they are in a secondary part.

It's kinda hard to categorise as are some others up on my list. I'd say it would actually go into category of mature people in general but since there isn't one I put it where I felt like it most belonged. It doesn't fit the seinen category, it is too serious for shonen, not romantic enough to be shoujo, and has too much action to be josei. Delving deep into the characters is a josei trait. And I think delving deep into the characters is what really defines NGE.

But those are all my opinions. You are free to categorise each of them in any way you want. And I quess some are ready to change that Shinji raising project to shoujo and karin to shonen not to mention azz killing me for giving soul eater a six. so good night. not my problem.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha is seinen (even though it kind of looks shoujo at first glance) - and while it does have a bit of violence (though not on the level of something like Berserk), it doesn't have much of the others.
