Quote: In Poland, you have to learn everything, until the very end of high school.. unless you went to technical college, giving you extra vocational subjects.
Well, some people go to vo-tech while in high school - they can take off half of the day and only have 3 or so classes, either in the morning or in the afternoon, and spend the rest of the school day at the technical college.
Quote: 6 years of primary school afterwards, which is overloaded, but less than the rest of our education
Count yourself lucky. I hated how underloaded my elementary school was. I feel that every year except for this one and they year before were at least 75% wasted, schooling-wise.

Quote: Who knows? For you it may seem like rote, but some people enjoy that kind of stuff.
Doesn't change the fact it's rote memorization, even if you like it
Programming isn't about typing if that's what you imagined. It's about thinking and designing algorithms most of the time -- typing is just the finishing touch.
Oh and optimization (i.e make an algorithm more efficient or faster). I do assembly as a hobby. Well most stuff (including philosophy) is done as a hobby.
Another good thing about programming is that you can do it from your home ('extra' stuff if you will), or as a hobby... I doubt you can, for example own a big particle accelerator in your home to do particle physics as a hobby

Quote: Doesn't change the fact it's rote memorization, even if you like it
I'm sure that if you get deep enough into it, it won't be rote memorization any more. Those exceptions would start making sense.
But what do I know? I went to an American school.
And some people enjoy working with others, and leaving the house once in a while. Not people like us, of course.
Quote: I doubt you can, for example own a big particle accelerator in your home to do particle physics as a hobby
I do. If all I do is be a greedy capitalist stealing people's opportunities, I might as well redeem them for prizes such as particle accelerators.

In a perfect world, memorizing things by rote would be dead and forgotten.
We no longer need to, with libraries around every corner and teh Internet available in every house.
It's actually better to teach people how to search for the data - look how many ppl can't use stupid google.com properly!

Quote: So even a welder finishes high school? Cool.. in Poland you can go to vocational school right after junior high school
I guess that's why the local mechanic charged me an outrageous sum compared to those back home...
Mvass, you should be thankful for your branching system...
So P.E. is not mandatory? How come?
A nice thread, by the way.

Well, it varies from place to place (in some places, P.E. is required, but it's never a core subject), but here, in Oklahoma, students are required to take P.E. in elementary and middle school, but, later on, they are no longer required to do so. Many do Athletics, though, which is more intensive and focuses on one sport at a time - and this is also part of the school sports teams' practices. Others (like me), who don't take athletics, don't have any P.E. past middle school at all. It isn't missed, might I add.

Oh boy, another one.
That's the university I went to, also. If there is one thing to learn from a political science college, then it is to stay the hell away from politics.

Philosophy may be interesting (as long as you're not discussing it with HC's Revolutionary Communist Party ) but there is absolutely no job opportunities that a philosophy degree gives.

No piece of paper will give you a job on its own. It's the philosopher who finds himself the perfect job opportunity, not the degree that gives one

Like cleaning toilets?
Seriously, though, philosophy is a hobby, not a job. Unless you plan to teach philosophy as a professor, there's not much of a market for them. Compare them to engineers of various kinds, or programmers, or chemists, or biologists, etc. Or even economists and political scientists!

mvass is kinda right, but on the other hand, everything is better than studying something that does not interest you, even if it results in the best job in the universe. Seriously, all the boredom.. the pain

Why don't you try the college again? Some people in Poland try the equivalent of college even when they are in their 40s and 50s..

Because of capitalism. And then people wonder why culture and our "enlightened youth" are being decreasing exponentially
We won't have any Einstein or Socrates anytime soon if we keep on like that (stupid society).
Celf, you were born in a military base

Quote: Chemistry sucks but Biology sucks even more. Chemistry sucks because you have to learn by rote all kinds of 'exceptions' which make no sense, I wonder if there's even logic all there with all the exceptions for reactions etc... It seems like there are too many exceptions to the rule unlike in physics or math.
I disagree, of course. The reason it seems like there are more "exceptions to the rules" in chemistry/biology, is because the rules are more complicated. But if you're not up to the challenge, stick to physics.
@mvass
Don't do it. Become a professor I mean. If you want to know why, I can elaborate.
Well, at least know what you're getting into before you commit to that path.

Zoran Djindjic, the late prime minister of Serbia, was a doctor of philosophy. And he was probably one of the greatest prime ministers we ever had. Far better than all those who finished political science.
