I got only one word, just one word: Private servers
Actually that's two words.
Well: I did use to play Retail, to I got to level 70(this was before WotLK) and in the ned, I just found out I had nothing more to do in WoW.
The lore was good, but it did ruin so much of what I had loved and worked for in warcraft III.
When you reach top level and play it for awhile, you'll find the gameplay quite repetive.
I will not say that I don't like/hate WoW, no. I loved that year and a half I spent playing it, but in the end it got boring and expensive. Was gonna start again this christmas, but my computer is 80% full already, so I dropped the idea.
Btw, about the community thing of WoW, I got one word there too: Eve largest MMORPG you'll find mate.
I also, for some reason, loved warcraft III much more.
My conclusion: WoW was good, but it got a end.
Edit:
@Elvin, who said "Who cares about the lore when the play", I do. 51% of a game its it story.

That's just it isn't it? WoW is good (I'm talking about the story line, not the actual game) but wc3 was GREAT (WITH CAPS), WoW also, within a couple of years, managed to more or less destroy the story and damage the lore that took Blizzard 10 years (sumthin like that). WoW isn't good enough, following the normal Blizzard game "standards". All their other games have been GREAT (WITH CAPS) and always contributed to games of all kind and Blizzard have greatly alterd general gameplay of all games by creating GREAT games with new ideas. They allways made flawless game engines and the editors to wc3 and starcraft are among the easiest I've seen, but still it's one of the few where you can actually make whatever you want (I made an FPS map for wc3(it sucked, but it was possible)). There are a few reasons that WoW became a big game, none of them are that it's a good game. It's the first MMO that got enough money to become world famous before it was even released, there was a Blizzard logo on the package and the name containd Warcraft. WoW is (honestly) one of the worst RPG:s I've ever played (and I've played it, all right. I really wanted it to be good game, I looked everywhere for the great details Blizzard usually has in their game), but the MMO "idea" that they "figured out" all on their own (fell the irony) made it a new and fresh. It was connected to the internet (everthing on the internet is kool! and l33t ).
When I first played it I was so god damn exited, this seemed to be the best game in history! It had this brand new MMO idea, it was made by Blizzard, it followed the warcraft lore and story and it was an RPG. I thought it was a game made for me, I'm a big fan of new ideas, blizzard and RPGs! I played twenty minutes and cried, then I found a bug that could make me rich! I found a bug that made it possible to gain infinite gold in almost no effort. I cried some more. I fought this big thing and it kicked my ass, it lagged too much (yeah right, WoW work with 56k). I got a better internet, it still lagged a bit though (yeah right WoW works PERFECT with 0.24mb) and then I tried to get that big thing, I almost got him and ran of and healed of as quick as possible. Only to realise that the big thing was fully healed. I cried some more. I tried once more but it killed me in melee combat from 20 metres away! I cried.

People fail to say whats wrong with the lore, thats what annoys me.
Very likely they have never played the game and doesnt know anything about the in-game story progression.
Most people seem to think "OMG MAD! SEND THE RANDOM ADVENTRUES AND TREASURE HUNTERS TO KILL THEM, BECAUSE THEY ARE MAD!!!".
I understand with Illidan, since he was pretty much a good guy.
But Blizzard said sorry about Illidan and that it didnt turn out as they wanted.
Likely, Illidans death will be retconned since they said sorry for it. Im suspecting he trains Demon Hunters against Sargeras in the last expansion before WoW 2.
