A MMO doesn't mean it is played by a lot of players, it means that it is possible to be played by millions of players.

You see, what if WoW would lose 90% of its players? Would that change its genre? That's ridiculous, it will still be a MMORPG. Because, it can have millions of players in its virtual worlds, doesn't matter if this actually happens or not (because of popularity)

If a game is open to a very large group of people ("everybody group" falls into this category ) that could play at the same time on the game's servers then it's a MMO

MMO means Massively multiplayer online (game), right? Now, how could you consider NS to be an MMO game? You can play Nationstates by yourself. Just get your own region and there you go, it's pretty much single player if you want it to be. To me, a multiplayer game would be something like Diablo 2 or WoW or Runescape (ugh ). Multi means playing with more than one person. That is why I do not consider NS to be an MMO game. Happy now, Asheera?

Its ridiculous. All online games call them MMOs these days even though there arent a lot of people playing them.

In my opinion, a MMO should have atleast 5 million active subscribers.
Ah, so warcraft is the only MMO?
Nice job in expressing a thought-out opinion!

@William: No, your definition is too subjective and fails for many MMOs.

In your NS example, you can still receive telegrams from other players, or they could join your region (if they know the password). What if you stay in your own region? Do you think that makes it single-player? Then why do you even need to log in to the NS servers to play? Tell you why: because that's where your nation is stored, and not on your PC. That makes it most definitely a multiplayer online game. And, since everyone can join and interact at the same time, it makes it a massive multiplayer online game.

You know, you could just get your own house in Runes of Magic and stay there for an eternity. People can't get in if they don't know your password: does that make it not a MMO game?

yes, ash, but every nation in NS 1 is still an island, no matter how you change it...

And comparing an action-packed MMO with NS is not smart, since they differ like night and day. The only thing it has in common is that there are people who occasionally log in to play it.

Yes, but apparently people have problems with grinding and looting and such which are specific to a MMORPG. They don't have problems with any kind of MMO, since it seems some people enjoy NationStates.

So this should be clear: most of you people don't like MMORPGs, not any kind of MMOs (not to mention it was pretty clear: I mean, some of you brought the arguments with looting and such which in a MMORTS wouldn't be present, I think)

No, in a MMORTS you would have "big army" to get, "resources" or otherwise an empire of some sort (just speculating). In MMOFPS you would have probably, "upgrades", "drugs", "stuff", "implants" or "bigger gear" -- this **** is everywhere

But MMO means massive. Made 5 million is a bit much, since WoW is the only online game to have achieved that number (it has 12 million active subscribers atm, but the game is free in Asia), but atleat 500,000.

A game with 100,000 active accounts should just be an Online Game. Not a MMO - 100,000 is not much.

100,000 would classify as an MMO. How is 100,000 NOT massive?

What difference does it make for a game if it has a lot of players or not? Does it really matter if it's "massive" or not? You won't interact with all the players anyway. So I'm not sure I see the relevance of being massive (whatever that is) to this topic.

Actually... if you're well-grouped and organised, a flat two thousand all online at once would seem HUGE. Believe you me.

it depends, in runescape on the primary trade worlds it is actually possible to crash if your specs aren't good enough because nearly half the world is in one location

edit: This oddly reminds me of the challenge of getting completely drunk in that game and trying to kill just about anything

Yeah that's about people who act like jerks though, which are a problem only (or mostly) in PvP - and that's why I hate that one and prefer PvE.

Haven't met any jerks in RoM, perhaps there are but they wouldn't bother me anyway.

100 k is ****** MEGA HUGE!!!! Say ONE game where you can play one hundred THOUSAND people LAN. I know it's not the same, since the games has many servers, but if there's 1000 in a server it's a "small" server and I can't think of any game that you can play 1000 players LAN.
